So after 11 years of podcasting being mainstream, a video that explains this plainly with all the silent details is finally offered up. Fantastic. Thank you!
Tobias McGriff I guess someone had to do it :-)
From one audio engineer to another, that was one of the most user friendly explanations of this process I have ever heard. Great job!!
Ha ha...you definitely have me in the audio engineer department!
@@solohour definitely bro. Super great explanation
Except the single side out mono black from the headphone Jack mistake, he should’ve plugged the red into channel 3 and panned channels 2 and 3 left and right so the h6 receives audio from the computer on both sides. Panning out his voice to the h6 was a bad move. Apart from that it was great 6 out of 10.
Just watched this and was thinking the same thing. He explained this the best!
After months of watching videos on how to set up a mixing board for podcasting, FINALLY you provide a concise and informative tutorial which actually does what it is meant to do. No pretentious crap and now self gloating. Thank you!!
4 minutes in and you already explain better than any other video/article I could find. Perfect.
I think that was by virtue of the fact that I've had to explain it a million times. :) Thanks.
This is the BEST video I have watched for podcast beginners. So very informative, Thank YOU SO MUCH ! you have no idea how helpful this is.
The easiest to understand video explaining this after 8 HOURS of trying to understand an audio setup for livestream podcast.
Thank you!
I cannot tell you how many videos I've watched, how many websites I've visited, how many subreddits I've trawled, looking for an explanation of how to set this gear up. Thank you, finally!
THIS IS THE BEST EXPLAINATION EVER. SINCE I STARTED SEARCHING FOR HOW MIXERS WORK. THIS HAS GIVEN ME A CLEAR IDEA SO THANKS
I wish I could like this video a hundred times! Best explanation I’ve ever seen of a mixer and how to use it. I learned more about the mixer I’ve been using for two years in the first 5 minutes of your video... thank you!!
You're quite welcome!
Great content! Thanks so much for going over everything in depth. Luckily I have some super minor sound engineer experience but this really broke it down and provided context.
Lowvie You are very welcome sir!
Hi Michael, Just wanted to say a huge thank-you! I have just purchased the Q802USB - the little brother to yours, and this video was the perfect answer to all my questions. Thanks heaps! I've subscribed, as I figured I'm going to need more of your guidance...! Cheers from Brisbane Australia!
Mike, I have to thank you again for this video, I have kept it in my playlist and rewatch every so often when dismantling and re-setting up my podcast tech. Thank you and best of luck in 2021.
Your Breakdown was So awesome. Saved me a lot of time, money & headaches...Thanks!
You're welcome Andre!
Michael, this was EXCELLENT! You answered so many questions I've had that I couldn't find answers for. I'm going to do some practicing. I hope you do the other video you mentioned, transferring the files for DAW editing. - John 'Ask The Dog Guy' Wade 🐾 P.S. I've subscribed and thumbs up.
Dude, I cannot tell you how informative this was for me. I actually returned a mixer I just received, got one comparable to the one in your vid, and got all the trinkets to emulate the set up you demo'd. So thorough, I can't wait for my equpiment to arrive. Thanks Bro!! Big Help !!!
Seriously, thank you. I've been fighting sound for two years with a Yeti. Background noise, crickets farting in the next county, motorcycles and house noise... the banes of Livestreams and Podcasts! No more!!
Just picked up a mixer today. I am not looking back.
This was the most in depth look at sound set-up that I have found. Straight forward, easy to understand and implement.
I'll be sharing this with other content creators, when they ask about sound.
#lifesaver
You run a solid channel buddy keep it up 👊
Much appreciated!
I learned more in the last 30 minutes than I have in the last frustrating months about pro audio equipment and recording.
That's great man. I appreciate the kind words.
Michael. I just now started my subscription of your channel. I want to thank you for sharing how to practically use an audio-mixer. Your mental presence and honest enthuisasm in the subject captures my interest.
Fantastic vid! I've watched so many on YT - yours is the absolute best! Very thorough - Thank U
Awesome vid. Your mic was clipping like crazy when you got excited there but hey, the content was good!
True story!
Great video! answers all the questions I had on how to set this up.
question, if you have three local guests it looks like this mixer could plug all three in. how do we ensure everyone can hear themselves and each other?
thanks in advance!
Thanks! Yes, you could definitely have all three in a room at the same time. The best way to do what you're asking is to have a headphone amplifier that plugs into the headphone out of the Zoom recorder, or the mixer. Something like this one: solohour.com/headphoneamp
I just found this video and I am so appreciative of you for making it. I’ve had my podcast for over 2 years and I’ve been trying to understand how to use a mixer with no luck. This is extremely user friends and informative. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this. I've watched dozens of videos about mix-minus and set up for podcasting. This one was the most helpful. I've been using a mixer for my podcast for several years now...I wish I had this video when I was first trying to figure things out.
Fantastic explanation! Thanks. To connect iMic out to mixer in, why not just use 1/4" TS to 3.5 mm TRS Mono? Why use stereo breakout cable and then have that extra 1/4" to mess with? Thanks in advance!
I was thinking the same. Just to keep the lines clean, no loose ends.
Is there a more budget friendly recorder I can use
fernando esparza look for a Zoom H4N on Craigslist. It should be less than $100.
@@solohour how do you connect the mixer to the recorder does it reeally need attenuators?
Absolutely brilliant explanation, thank you!
Phenomenal. After searching thinking I had to new gear like a condenser mic and interface. This was perfect and clearly delivered. Already have zoom, dynamic mics and a mixer!!!
Can you give me a thumbs up and a subscribe if you liked this? I’ve got a small channel that I’d like to grow and you’d be doing me a HUGE favor! THANKS!! What’s the next thing you’d like to know about podcasting?
The Solopreneur Hour Podcast with Michael O'Neal you mentioned in this video about making a separate video regarding the next steps: Taking the recorded SD card into post production.
Did you already address that in another vid? If not, that would be a great thing to see broken down.
What camera did you film this vid on please.
Great quality. Thanks!!
I bought the Mackie mix12, irig2 (phone calls), Rode Reporter Mic omnidirectional also will be upgrading to Audio Technica BPHS1 (Lewis Howes) for consistent sound direct studio sound.
@@reissrobinson I think I used my Canon M50 for this one.
I have a question, so my podcast I use four mics and the irig2 to send the sound to my iphone to record video to upload on youtube. But I wanted to play music from my laptop to the mixer, do I use the hosa cable to connect to the griffin imic and connect the headphone in on the irig2?
buddy, of course I thumbed up and subscribed the first time I watched this.. anyway, I did the pan thing you suggested to get separated tracks out of my Zoom H6, one for my voice out of the mic and another track for the media I'm playing or discussion of a person on Skype. But, when editing I noticed that during silent times on one track I hear the other track playing at a low db. I would imagine that's because using a pan to all left for one track and all right to the other leaks or leaves a bit of my mic on the media track. Is that normal, or should the pan way you suggested give true separation? The good news is I mix the tracks back together with software but what if I wanted the complete separate tracks? Is this just a mixer norm?
thank you for providing applicable info that was clear and to the point and covered all of the bases from start to finish... finally.
I have been looking for a solid explanation of all this mixer/software business throughout RUclips for days. This was by far the best I've found. Thank you for breaking it all down.
YOu're very welcome Heidi! More videos to come! Would love a sub!
Dude you are the best! I have this mixer for a live setup with click tracks and an apogee interface. You have seriously helped me with my routing questions and how to talk to the band through the mixer during performances. Thanks!!!!
Subscribed and notified!
I don't podcast (yet at least) but use my podcast set up to do GoToMeeting consulting calls with clients every day using a Mackie 1402 VLZ4 mixer, Behringer Multicom Pro-XL compressor/limiter gate, Behringer Powerplay Pro-XL headphone amplifier, Heil PR40 and Rode NTG3 (when I don't want the mic to be seen and am okay with some ambient noise), iRig 2 (to bring in phone calls) and Roland R-05 audio recorder.
I've seen and paid for a lot of tutorials on how to get that all set up and this is THE BEST tutorial I've seen yet. Really cool to watch a tutorial from someone who actually podcasts (really really well).
The tip I learned from your video was to use the panning functionality of the mixer to split the tracks (it was something I had wanted to do for a while!). So thanks a bunch and love the channel so far :D
NIce setup!
Wow, you explained everything with so much clearity! This was amazing for me as a beginner! Thank you!
I've worked with most of this equipment on and off for many years and learned more about it all from you in 30 minutes than I ever knew. BRAVO and Thanks
Leonardo Artist thanks for the kind words Leonardo! Would love a subscriber to the podcast if you have a moment. solohour.com/itunes
This is by far the best mixer tutorial I've ever found! Thank you so much. Extremely helpful!
Excellent video. I learned a lot in from your very clear instructions. I also like the pacing of the presentation, not to slow but also not rushed. Excellent tutorial on how and what to use for a podcast. A great video all the way around. Thank you!
This was super helpful and a great refresher, absolutely gave me some of the new knowledge I was missing. I have over 15 years in Audio/Video and getting deeper into pro-sumer/pro hardware has me feeling like a kid again! Like....Add
This video is fantastic. I know absolutely nothing about audio. Like, 30 years of my life, never been musical or touched audio, but needed a nice mic and mixer setup for a project. This answered pretty much everything i needed to know, explained what everything was, how to use it, and got me up and running with all my equipment i previously knew nothing about. Thanks!
That is awesome! Thanks man!
Oh my lord this video just helped me understand the entire process. My friend and I were on the verge of tears today trying to figure out this podcast set up and now we finally can do it.
As a now retired technical writer, regularly I bemoan the average person and their inability to communicate a complex technical scenario to a lay audience.
CONGRATULATIONS! You took, what for me, is a complex technical scenario, and communicated it most effectively. Well done. Your elocution, your knowledge, your presentation - all point to you, as an expert. I enjoy learning from experts.
Fantastic video! I've learned so much! Thanks!
I've referred to this show many times and am building my setup. The concise information is greatly appreciated.
You explained things SO simply and clearly. If someone ever needed a "tell me like I'm a child", you did it perfectly.
This video is absolutely the BEST! Answered all my questions.
The lesson taught me a lot. I believe now I know what a mixer does and can operate one. I have also learnt the difference between condenser and dynamic microphones and their applications. Thank you.
Great information. Thank you for making this so clear.
Super informative video, it’s such a hard thing to explain, especially the aux send but you done a great job. I’m a newbie and glad I found this helpful video. Thank you for taking the time.
First time to watch your RUclips and within 5 minutes I subscribed because of your knowledge and clean explanation. Your breakdown is amazing and I understand much more easier than before. Thank you so very much 🙏
You are such a good teacher. That was an excellent tutorial. Thank-you
I spent a few days looking for EXACTLY this breakdown. Thank you for doing this, it is extremely helpful!

I have learned a lot of this own my own in the past which causes me to appreciate your style! Great info, great technique!!! Thanks you have taken the nervousness of my venture into Podcasting!
Great job explaining the mixer Michael. You made my purchasing a whole easier. I think I know what to look for in the mixer I need to purchase. Great video presentation.
Hey Michael, Well done! Great job explaining the process. Two thumbs up for you mate.
now i totally get the 'mix minus' concept.

Just venturing down this podcast rabbit hole....this tutorial was invaluable! THANK YOU!

Ray Renati Glad I could help!
Michael, this was so clear! Thanks. I watched all the mix-minus youtube videos I could find. You had the best! Very precise and clear. Thanks. I will certainly watch your other videos and listen to your podcast! Thank you Michael! Much appreciated!

From one fellow drummer to another... WELL DONE! Probably one of the more comprehensive and well-explained videos on podcasting set up I've seen yet. And I've seen several. Great job Mike!!!!
Right on man! Keep on rocking!
Excellent presentation of not only the gear but also how everything in your setup works together. Very thorough and much appreciated! Made it super simple to grasp, especially as a newbie.
You're quite welcome! Would appreciate a subscribe if you don't mind! Scratching my way to 1000! :) A lot more podcast content coming!
Thanks, Mike! I’ve been a cameraman all my life, but I am an “audio-tard” when it comes to this stuff! I needed to understand how to use my board, in a podcast workflow, and you did a great job of breaking it down comprehensively. I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share.
Well, I could use some of your camera chops, for sure! Thanks for watching! Would love a subscribe to the podcast! solohour.com/itunes (or wherever else you listen to podcasts)
Wow such a great teacher. I love your teaching.
So blessed to learn and understand clearly. I had everything but didn't know how to connect
Thank u very much. This is just a great video. It is complete. Very wel explained. There is no beter, you have talent!
You explained a mix minus better than anyone else and saved me so much money by doing so. Bro I love you
This is an excellent and detailed tutorial. The best one can find. Thank you Michael!
Great video, thanks for this, big help. Our podcasts were taking too long to edit in post because we don’t have a mixer in our setup. Our mics were going straight into our recorder and everything else was added later in post which created a huge job each time. We’ll definitely be investing in a mixer ASAP, really like the one you have actually, might go for that.
I learnt lots with you video. thanks for your hard work!
Michael, this video was awesome. You explain everything in an easy to understand format.
Thumbs up to a great explanation video!!
Excellent tutorial!!!! Thank you!
Awesome explanation! Been around audio and media for many years... the term “mix minus” was new to me. You explained it very well.
That's awesome bro. You are a pro teacher. Thanks!
It's absolutely the best set of advice about how to set up the podcast equipment. I used your advice and all works perfectly.
Thanks Marek!
Wonderful tutorial, thank you sir.
Great Video Man, very useful!
Great advice, thanks for your time to share your knowledge.
I am very happy to watch this awesome masterpiece video.I am a trained free Lance journalist and anytime am out for interview, I face lots of problems pertaining to my audio recordings accutrument and it's so tedious finding the right way to record audio without loosing them. I was trying to buy a different audio recording set-up but for you, I have learnt a lot from you so I change my mind. Your tutorials are very simple and detail. Thanks
Your mix minus explanation was the best I've ever heard. Thank you!
Thanks Greg! It's a little complicated, so I'm glad it was clear.
You are a great teacher, Michael. You clarify things that can sound very complicated. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Wow, this was such a great video. You explained everything so well for the total novice like me to understand. I may be re-visiting this exact video several times to get all the detailed equipment recommendations and level suggestions. Thanks for creating the video -- it was super useful in 2020!
I actually have it saved, and when my equipment comes in, I will be setting up according to this. PODCAST STATUS: MASTER! lol
This breakdown was SO helpful. I was recording podcasts into my computer without headphones and one of my shows turned out so stat-icky and couldn't use it, so I knew it was time to have a mixer. Thanks for the breakdown and keeping it simple- it saved me a lot of time
Happy to help Julia! Would appreciate a sub if you haven't already! More great podcast vids to come!
clear and concise presentation...thanks so much... it was definitely time well spent watching and listening to you.
This is very generous of you to share the knowledge Michael .... appreciated :-)

One of the best explanation I’ve ever heard. Thank you
Quite welcome! Thanks for watching! Would love a subscribe to the podcast! solohour.com/itunes (or wherever else you listen to podcasts)
Dude fantastic video. I've been doing online radio for many years, but never dabbled in the Podcast realms. I did a quick search on "How to" and I came across your video. You explain things so well. I smashed that Subscribed and on my way to purchasing a Zoom H6 and iMic. I'll check out your other instructional videos soon. Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Really great job explaining this, sometimes, confusing technology. Definitely a thumbs up!
Great Demonstration, Thanks
This is like I went to class 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 this set up is a classic set up. Sure tech is improving, but radio has been great and perfected.
finally after an hour i found what I'm looking for! This is awesome and thank youu
19:54 Got the name of the thing I need! :D
Btw thanks for the help, I saw another vid using an Aux output but or something but I didn't have it, didn't know I could also use my FX output for that same exact thing.
Very useful.
Been watching several videos and this is the best one on RUclips. Well done Mike. Thanks!
Thanks Mark! Preeshed!
excelente , thank you for shared such valuable info.
Awesome video u r incredible at this stuff.
