    What a comeback this game made. Its evidence that this game was clearly pushed out before it was finished. This might be worth picking up now.

      If you just want to explore there's a sandbox mode where you don't need to bother with grinding.

    Summary:
    This review took a lot of grit and determination as the early grind is pretty horrible and from watching a certain other reviewers video I can see clearly that they did not bother and just spouted a whole load of bullshit and guess work at what the game is like without even trying many of the new features, this saddens me a lot as people are going to miss out on a good game.
    First of all it's clearly not for everyone, space survival is a genre that requires imagination, patience and a huge amount of time but the rewards are great immersion, coop experiences and vast exploration.
    Some of the deluded comments on this video are hilarious, they are from people who have clearly not even bothered playing the game for more than 6 or 7 hours. They say it's all about mining and grinding when it's clearly not about any of that once you start massing your fleet. This is one of the main changes to the game, you become the top dog, the fleet owner, you employ others to work for you, send ships out on missions to earn big bucks while you explore with your friends and even assault other freighters and ships. Hardly mining and grinding.
    You also decide if you want a huge land base on a planet you like or to just stay in space, mobile and exploring the galaxy, or do both. All the things mentioned here were simply not in the game back in 2016. The 2016 game was just mining and grinding for fuel while you fly around a pointless world doing nothing. Look at these patch notes for the three huge updates that have happened since 2016 (Pathfinder, Altas and Next) nomanssky.gamepedia.com/Patch_notes it's basically a totally different game now and I for one am shocked at how much it's changed.
    I have huge plans for my game, firstly financial through my freighter missions then expansion of my fleet and then exploration, this will probably take 40+ hours. The fact that am doing this in coop is great and adds a whole new avenue to the game.
    Did Sean Murray lie to us in 2015 and 2016 ofc he did but he has redeemed himself now by turning the game into what it is today by working his arse off for 2 years to make up for his terrible mistake. Should we still call for his head? ofc not, why should we, he is redeemed in my book, will I trust him again, possibly, but that trust must now be earned, I want to see at least two more games released that actually live up to the "words of the developer" then I may start trusting him again.

    • @Tieyme
      @Tieyme 6 лет назад +1

      You should have read the words. The Next release notes say you can 'prey on others to survive,' As far as I can tell that's a complete lie. I fought to the death by arrangement. I won, but the guy that died got to return to his grave and get all his backpack inventory back. I got nothing except less health due to the fight.
      You try to 'prey on others to survive,' Mack. See what you think about Hello Game's words then.

      Honestly you really need to stop trying to catch the devs out and just play the damn game, there are loads of videos of people raiding other players bases, I just watched a guy loot 2.5 million from another players base. Google some no mans sky pvp and you will see what it's all about.

      Tieyme play survival mode, death is final, end off start again. Also try and get the achievement getting to the center of the galaxy in survival, now that's a challenge

    • @simonmurphy6320
      @simonmurphy6320 6 лет назад +17

      Fair play to re-review mack. I read an article that Murray got caught up in the hype himself at that start and regrets it all. He also said that without launching when they did they were done as they had run out of money and although this is not an excuse I can understand taking on a project that gets out of control and the vision he had for this game. I'm so happy they have been able to continue to make Next and he said they will be continuing to produce content and updates on a regular basis going forward. Credit where credit is due if this was an EA studio it would have been forgotten about 2 years ago..

I am honestly waiting to see what comes of Star Citizen, it might not be bad it might not be good, but the drama will be entertaining!

      Not really, quarterly patches to the alpha are showing very steady progress now. Unless you are actually involved in the alpha then it's silly to comment. Performance has also improved a lot, all the evidence is quite reassuring. Luckily some people are willing to take risks with their money to make great games happen, all of you kids shouting and screaming online without actually having any direct insight on the SC dev process are just, well, typical examples of ignorant people being loud online without having any real insight to offer, nothing new there. If you are only ever willing to back small-medium scale projects where no real risk or innovation is involved, with a focus on a quick release (AAA industry) well you all deserve publishers like EA basically.

      I spent $35, less than the release price of the game. I'm happy to support the project with my money, because it couldn't exist otherwise. So keep on getting your panties in a twist instead of using logic and reason, it's entertaining and sad at the same time - Some people just thrive off of online drama and hysteria, such as yourselves.

      Being the greatest in something that shouldn't be a thing is still not a good thing. Games should have to do comebacks at all. They robbed a lot of people of their money with false promises, that years down the line turned into a half way decent game. Not really something i'd wanna be known for. And after all the delays and f*ck ups they still ask a tripple A value price for it. Ya can't throw 2 scoops of sugar on a pile of shit and call it sweet.

    Here's something you gotta remember. About 90% of the way through development, Hello Games Studio was flooded! They had said that it had effected some of their progress, yet they didn't delay the game. Or, weren't allowed to? They had a contract with SONY, and were funded by them for the release of their game on that specific date. Perhaps SONY forced Hello Games' hand and didn't want to see a delay, and made them release what they had. And what they had was MAYBE less then they had before the flood. Anyone else agree? Coulda been false hype and lies. Or it could have been a good company being punished for something they had no control over..

    • @CC42_
      @CC42_ 6 лет назад

      MrRATpHace Sony's hands were dirty insofar as they were heavily tied to the game and HAD to have known it would not live up to its promises. They marketed it heavily so they created that hype morsoe than Sean Murray. They also had to have been involved in deciding it's $60 price tag. I'm sure your right and they made sure it was "forced out the doors when it really needed lot's more time.

    One of the best things they did to this game was turning the red crystals into compressed carbon (instead of the only launcher fuel) and creating frequently-spawning dihydrogen fuel for the launch thrusters.
    One of the worst feelings when the game first came out was trying to decide when to land your ship on a planet because relaunching it was like losing a leg. Especially in survival mode.
    But now the fuel sources are so much more reasonable to make and you can’t get stranded on planets anymore. That is also nice.

    No Mans Sky, as of today Sept 2022... is amazing. Its come a long long way, even in just the couple years I have been playing.
    Its one if my favorite games, I have over 1600 hours.
    Its a very niche game, its like black liquorice... you either love it or hate it.
    Its not really like anything else. And a lot of people don't know how to handle not being pushed along and forced in any particular direction, not having a solid definition of what "sucess" is or dealing with the multitude of ways there are to be sucessful. No ticking clock, no pursuing enemies, no restrictions on advancement or travel... a lot of gamers dont know wtf to do without being told.
    And there are so many items to find, craft and upgrade and so many systems to make money and nanites and so many things to spend them on and so many roles you can choose for yourself...
    There is always something to do. I really got into building, its the best building in gaming. Especially once you learn the advanced techniques/glitch building.
    I agree though, there is a bit of redundancy when it comes to assets. Theres a ton of different plants, animals, buildings, planet styles etc... but you do see the same stuff all the time. And there are no inhabited planets really... settlements and the odd NPC station but no cities or hostile populations beyond sentinel-heavy planets. Thats really all I can complain about.

    Hey Mack,
    You are an absolute champion. I was 10 yrs old when I got ELITE on the BBC. Was an Xmas present from my mother , a complete surprise. Best Xmas I ever had as a kid. I absolutely loved that game. I backed the Kick Starter for ELITE Dangerous. I was in awe when I saw David was remaking it. After installing it the joy I felt as a kid came back. It was awesome. But like you I was extremely disappointed by the fact there were no thargoids. I'm not sure if you have played Elite Dangerous recently but I'd love to see you re-review it like you have done for No Man's Sky. I watched your first review of no mans sky and once I could finally stop myself from laughing so hard I decided not to buy it based on your review. Then I saw this review and I was like holy shit I have to have it! I am over 50 hours in to it now and am loving it. If only Elite had this much content when you land on a planet instead of the single outpost on a derelict planet with not a single f!%@$n thargoid in site! (DING!) I do have to use an Xbox controller on my PC to fly though. Flying with the mouse is impossible. If I could merge the two games I'd have the ultimate game. We could call it No Man's ELITE!! (DING!)

    The number one thing that I think people need to understand about NMS is that no matter what, it is a survival game, which is a fact that isnt going to change. That's a big, popular genre, but it's not for everyone. That genre always has the same sort of gameplay loop and NMS is no exception: Gather resources so you can survive, so you can gather more resources, to survive more, and maybe get some improvements and machines, to get resources better and have more options, to survive more..... you get the idea. Survival games are always quite repetitive and tend to have ALOT of "resource grind", but holy heck do you have alot of freedom and there are always about a bazillion things to do despite the repetition. It might sound silly, but I always compare NMS to Dont Starve, as it really is the same gameplay loop and alot of the same concepts. Though this has a MUCH higher emphasis on exploration and it's quite a bit less brutal than Dont Starve is (unless you play on the harder of the two modes... then it gets cruel). If you like survival games, you're gonna freaking love this, and the exploration elements are going to just improve the formula even more. But if you dont like them, this one likely wont change your mind on that genre. So all of that should be kept in mind before deciding to buy or not.
    Ya know what this game also reminds me of... Starflight. Ooooooold space game from way back when. It's like a super-modern version of that. I adored that game, so this has been fantastic to me. I am absolutely loving this and it's been fascinating to watch this make such an astonishing comeback... heck, even most of my friends are playing this. Despite most of them declaring it to be horrible early on.

  • @SultanOfAwesomeness

    Damn dude, I might actually have to pick this up now. How expansive is the multiplayer though? Is there a limit to how many people can get into one co-op game? Is there an overall multiplayer like they were talking about two years ago, with hundreds of people on one server, but the universe is so vast that you'll hardly bump into anyone else?

    • @malfunction51
      @malfunction51 6 лет назад +2

      4 player co-op...drop in drop out..if another player not in your party of 4 turns up they appear as a glowing orb..u can see the orb and know it's another player but can't interact..your party of 4 friends all have proper character models (space suits) with full interaction like trading items, gesturing + more etc.. and can change your race to any of the other races in the game with full customisation on any space station for free...sorry it's long explanation.. it's hard to cram all the crazy new stuff it's a totally different game.

    • @wylie2835
      @wylie2835 6 лет назад +1

      There was never talk about hundereds of people being on server. MP was always going to P2P within a system and limtied to just a few players at one time. This was put into the game 1 year ago with 1.3. Next is an expansion onto that system.

    • @wylie2835
      @wylie2835 6 лет назад

      And there are no plans to expand co-op to 16 players. Thats a lie. People are still No Mans Skying i see. The game currently supports up to 16 players in an instance. But only 4 can drop in, the rest have to be on location through thier saves. There aren't plans to increase the amount of co-op players.

    • @SultanOfAwesomeness
      @SultanOfAwesomeness 6 лет назад

      Wylie28 What? If you look at the original interviews with Murray, he actually states that yes, the original goal was to have thousands of people on a server at once. However, he also said that since the universe they were creating was so large, the possibilities of actually running into anyone were very very small.

    • @wylie2835
      @wylie2835 6 лет назад

      He never said that. The original plan for multi was exactly what we got in 1.3. I have a feeling you have no idea what the difference between an instance and a server is. Servers do host 10s of 1000s of people. But an instance will not contain more than 16. Very standard for video games. Clientside hardware cannot handle that many networked objects in a game.

    People need to remember that this game was created and developed by a very, very small team. It's not a triple A title with hundreds or more people working on it. The game isn't for everyone too: it is about (for me at least) relaxation and enjoying views, not what some people thought like huge MMO space battles, etc.

    A hell of a lot of these "new" features Mack goes on about were all there in the original release, as far as I can tell. I don't think Mack took a long enough look at the original game, I'm not saying it hasn't improved in many ways, just not as many as Mack says.

      Yeah but a lot of those mechanics that were already there has gotten more interesting by giving the game better progression and sense of purpose. Sure, you could find a ship at release but if you didn't even wanna keep playing, it didn't feel as rewarding.

    • @Keldor314

      I think the best way of looking at it is that NMS was originally released in an alpha state. Much of framework for the game was more or less there, but not finished, not balanced, not tied together into a coherent whole. The three big exceptions would be base building, land vehicles, and multiplayer, each of which are completely new systems requiring a lot of new code.
      A good example of what I mean by the basic framework existing all the way from the original version would be the crafting system. All the functional bits were there from the beginning - you could craft upgrades, and you could craft items. The problem was that the items you could craft were mostly useless (other than warp drive fuel anyway), and you just got the upgrade recipes from random loot. Now there's a real crafting tree of sorts, and resource distribution makes more sense, and you buy blueprints from merchants. Really, it barely added anything at all, it just had some assembly (and balancing) required!
      It's like one of those plastic models, comparing it from when you just open the box to the finished, assembled model. The state of the model looks completely different! But the real work was done way earlier, by the guy who meticulously modeled every little piece and the other guy who got the molds in the factory fabricated and...
      Now there are still components of NMS that need some love. Mack already mentioned the buildings, which would definitely benefit from some nice procedural generation. Mind you, procedurally generating buildings and having floor layouts make sense and having the details work harmoniously is easier said than done! There have been some interesting reasearch papers written about this in recent years, mostly in the context of generating cityscapes, and with a decent bit of deep learning mixed in, but there is still a lot to discover. Another improvement could be in animal spawning rules. Proper herds, sensible predator/prey balance, that sort of thing.
      The bottom line in any case is that the pieces of NMS are no longer scattered around on the table, but are beginning to really fit together into a whole.

    Star Citizen:
    - Massive hype kickstarter generating millions of funds.
    - Online shop generating hundreds of millions over the course of 6 years.
    - 6 years later, all we have is some meh betas for a couple of modes and an all-ships complete pack that costs $100k (only available to people who have already spent $1k+).
    - 6 years later, still waiting for the complete game I was promised when I preordered. Maybe in 60 more years SC will be a complete product.
    No man's Sky:
    - Started with hype but flopped hard.
    - Source of "No Man's Lie" memes for 2 years.
    - Despite heavily limited funds (flopped release, refunds, and barely anyone bought it since release), 2 years later the product we were promised is pretty much here.
    - Actually worth buying now, and has more content than star citizen.
    I'm fucking done. NMS was the only game I had even less faith in than SC, now it's completely turned around and I'm having a blast with it.

      All survival games are repetitive and generic, in fact most games are period. How many times have you looted the same house in 7 Days to Die or Minecraft? What do you want 18 trillion hand crafted planets? Some people won't be satisfied until Hello Games create a real virtual galaxy, Sean Murray may have made some outlandish claims in the past, I don't recall being God was one of them. If you don't actually know what's in the new version your opinion is anything but humble and entirely worthless.

    • @MU.200
      @MU.200 6 лет назад +7

      I disliked the inital version and this one doesn't make it any better. Why would I build a base if there's no enemy, why would I upgrade my ship if there's nothing waiting for me? The campaign might be 30 hours but 30 hours of nothing special. Don't argue with Minecraft, Fortnite etc. You play Fortnite because it's competetive. You play Minecraft because it had insanely creative and diverse multiplayer modes and single player mods. This game in comparison is like Minecraft early alpha. This game should be about exploring and there just isn't anything to explore after you've played for a couple of hours.

      iPhones are made in Chinese sweatshops. Out of principle, we shouldn't buy them, yet here we are.

      Woupsme thats not a redeeming point tho. Ofc the updates should be free. Look at the damn price tag of this game. If the updates would've cost stuff that would've been the scummy way to go for the devs. Free updates shouldnt be a "redeeming point". They should be the standard.

      lol what principle is that... was you a fan of hitler and world war 2? no... so are you gonna pass on the opportunity to drive or buy a Porsche because it german?
      think about what you are saying mate, your chopping off your nose to spite your face, you should buy a game for you, not skip it to make a point nobody is going to see, hello games wont be sitting there saying ''shiiiiit, nextplanetgaming isn't buying our game'' and nobody else is either, the only one that misses out is you. buy something you want because you like it otherwise you miss all the best things in life and nobody cares, I hate apple, but if they make something amazing that I want ill buy it I don't give a shit if I hate them and their practices or not lol

    Hi Mack, Does Green Man Gaming have a platform that you have to play their games through (like steam), or is it a pure game download (as if you had bought CD/DVD)?

    Another huuuge thing is that they've continually updated the planets and terrain generation. It's outstanding now, with near Earth like scale. Mountains, oceans, continents etc.
    Really really loving the new planets, and I'm a day one player who has been through all the updates over the last 2 years.

    All the buildings look the same, but I just assumed they were just like modular pods that a race would send down. But in that case I would expect every race to have their own modular pods. I'm not sure if different races have different buildings or not.

    I didn't play the old NMS much, maybe 15-20 minutes, before I dropped it like a hot potato. But I came back now to check things out and oh goodness ... so immersive! It's absoultely great.

    I purchased right before Next. I was dumbfounded at how bad the tutorial was, I died my first 5 starts, then Next hit and something clicked. I'm almost through the tutorial and loving it. Thanks for the updated WAB. I agree completely.

    Hi Mack, this is nothing special but i just wanted to say that i've been watching your videos for at least 2-3years now. I've been also enjoying videos on your 2nd channel "Mackscorner" - i hope you didnt abandon it. :) Anyways, before i found you on youtube i was always a huge fan of TB (since ~2008) and after he passed away i have to say you have the best review videos here on this platform by far - at least for my taste and i am a bit older gamer (i started gaming in 1990/91).
    Thank you & keep up the good work!

      What's the name of the keyboard you're using that confuses accute accents with apostrophes? It seems like half the Internet is using them. Thanks.

    Quick question, you said you had a fleet? Are you able to say, recruit NPCs to fly ships for you?
