My buddy, that i showed the game a few weeks back, actually went completely crazy and learned ALL words from all languages already. Had to supply him with a few warp cells through that, but i didnt mind. :) I loved how dedicated he was to his goal, and now he can understand every alien perfectly.. kinda insane. Just sad, that steam doesnt have an Achievement for learning all words.

I spent days searching for an earth like paradise planet with rings like Saturn. I cannot express the joy I felt when I found it. I built a replica of my own home, planted giant trees to create my own, private forest, and have spent countless hours exploring that one system. Each planet had something different to offer. I built different farms for even the most basic supplies. I scanned every fauna, I’ve activated countless waypoints, I even found a settlement on my planet that was effectively lake side. That lake had a little island where I built a cabin. I’ve spent hours exploring the nearby systems as well. If you expand the galaxy map you’ll see I’ve established bases, created farms and fully explored them. And that’s all just one pocket in one galaxy.
And then there’s the community. NMS Coordinate exchange is a treasure trove of cool shit. Locations for cool ships, multi-tools or animals to adopt as pets. It’s endless. Sometimes I just wander around other players’ base builds to get ideas or marvel at their creativity.
Anyone playing NMS for an “end goal” is missing the point. Sometimes I play the game just to sit on a planet and take in the sights and sounds. I have a base on a mountainous planet with glowing purple fields and dinosaurs. My cabin sits perched on a cliff so high that jumping off of it takes a good 20-30 seconds to hit the bottom. It’s awesome.

the problem with No Man's Sky is that you arent really exploring the galaxy you are just visiting the same planet over and over with a different filter applied. You cant fly through a solar system for example like you can do in Elite Dangerous and fly past moons and gas giants and around the sun. It very much feels like an artifice

Multi biome worlds would be very cool, I don't know how taxing that would be on the hardware but maybe it will come. But this would be just another fantastic thing for something which is already fantastic. Ultimately you'd always go into orbit to travel between biomes and that is functionally almost identical to travelling to new planets.

The problem is that the whole game is build like a factory from day 1. The main game loop is based on collecting resources, the game is a survival after all, so can't really enjoy something that was not built that way.
Try to find the difference between NMS worlds and something like Mass Effect worlds, or even the most recent Starfield worlds: they are alive, even if barren. You travel with a companion, you have something to do that is not just scan plants and rocks and collect resources and walk around. That is what NMS miss most of the time.
It was built as exploration game but as game where you go to planet X, scan stuff for money; collect stuff for money and to get to the next place where you scan stuff for money and collect stuff for money, so you can upgrade things to go farther to get more scans of things for money... And you survive in the meantime. It is the very core loop of the game that is against itself. If NMS was designed to be an exploration game, you would not be alone; you would walk around your ship; and when building your capital ship interior, it would not look like every single piece has a functionality to make money or produce something... You are in fact making factories on land or in space.
And nothing wrong with that; this is what NMS is: solitary exploration and survival. If that is what you like, it is a great game, but if you want a real exploration game, you are stuck with stuff like Mass Effect, where you can't pilot a ship nor get all the awesome things you get in NMS

Many people wouldn't have issues with optimizing their journey if inventory space wasn't an issue. The main driver towards optimization is the fact that you keep running out of space, your ship keeps running out of space and it's incredibly frustrating. Most people (me included) just want to upgrade the inventory slots of everything, and then they feel like they can finally start enjoying the game.

I love your video! I've got over 3000 hours in the game and have done all the things you listed at the end. Here are some other things to do:
    Find your own squid ship.
Read all the lore cycles found in the game: for example, the abandoned base lore, and the lore loop found at boundary failures on exotic worlds.
Learn all words of all languages in game (including the Atlas language).
Complete the Atlas path after learning all the Atlas words so that you can read all the Atlas lore as you do the Atlas path. (I did this on my first save, since I prioritized learning all languages when I started playing.)
Find all identifiable rocks, animals, and plants in a system, including unique rocks and plants in underwater caves, etc....
Warp! to the Galactic Hub and make a base in one of the Hub systems. Join other civilizations.
Warp to one of the corners of one of the galaxies. (Each galaxy is shaped kind of like a pizza box and has eight corners!)
Warp along an entire edge of a galaxy.
Play in permadeath at max difficulty. (Ultimately this gets to be as easy as normal, after you learn the game.)
    Min/max your suit/a ship/freighter/multitool.
Find planets with ultra-rare combinations of geographical features.
    Find greater mushroom beetles.
    Find killer care bears!
Learn to make music with the bytebeat.
Learn how to wire control circuits of various kinds.
Learn how to glitch build with bases.
Find a station with a first spawn exotic ship for scrapping.
Find a station with two first spawn exotic ships!
Find a max size S-class capital freighter.

Excellent tips all around. Here’s one more:
Start a new save often. I restart a lot. Give yourself a challenge like you can’t do X or Y for money this run. I tend to do the same strategies a lot, so when I take those off the table it makes me be more creative. I’ve found that hauling trade goods is way easier and more lucrative than I thought it was, and it grows your money really fast since you make more and you can buy more with each trip. 👍🏻

Now you have to find some other ways and it makes you strategize. Or you can only leave the first system once you’ve made 10 million units. Whatever ideas you want to make for challenges. Also, Beeblebum has some great challenges like the Fugitive Challenge, which can be a lot of fun. Modify the rules a bit if it gets too tedious and just make it fun. 👍🏻

Best part is you don't have to take the first one you save. You can keep jumping and triggering them until you find one you want and then take that as your first free freighter ;)

On the reddit or YT theres a ton of people who will share their perfect paradise planet and that attracts a lot of players. Feels cool to load up the game and physically see changes to the area around you. although I would recommend keeping important storage in your freighter, never know when a glitch that allows players to steal your loot or destroy your base parts might pop up.

My advice: Play Extreme Permadeath. I just finished my run to the center of the galaxy. And … man. What an experience. It wasn’t always a nail-biting thing, in fact, I found more peace eventually, because I decided to really savor the game more. I made up my mind that, if I failed my Permadeath run, that was it. I was never attempting it again. It was truly a one-and done. So, what happened was I actually spent time making exo-craft, and leveling up my hazard protection so I could survive anywhere. I established a settlement town because I had never done it before, and I knew I’d be taking a long break from NMS after the permaD run. I ended up getting the Platinum trophy, and became an outlaw, and just… flirted with death for fun. I came within a single hit of a deleted save more than a few dozen times, and every time I did I felt more alive. Eventually, I did what we all have to do… just buckle down and make the few hundred jumps to the center. I also took the Atlas Path so I could get the Black-Hole vision … and it was just… I don’t know how to put it… I guess it’s now my most favorite Save file in the game. I go to my other files, and though they’re fun, and relaxing. They’re not the triumph my PermaDeath save is. Now Omega Expedition is out… I’m playing again… and I can even use my Permadeath Save as the starting point. How awesome is that?

Some really good points here, but I still think that NMS's biggest problem is the extremely boring campaign, especially the start which is bound to turn away many new players due to it forcing you to put in at least two hours of useless garbage such as building a base on a butt - ugly planet and talking to random uninteresting NPCs.
Also the space combat system needs a MAJOR update, all you do is hold down the S key and fire. The spaceship controls also need a rework as they are frustrating at best.
I still have around 70 hours on steam and did enjoy the game the ways talked about here though, just think the game is less fun and streamlined than it could be.

As a new player to the game, I must say. For the price tag (especially under $30 when I picked it up on sale), it is INCREDIBLE. I can't lie and say I was ever knowledgeable on No Man's Sky. I am a pretty extreme gamer (someone who has over 400 steam games and historically would rack 30-60 hours a week gaming, only being lowered due to working more now), though the ONLY thing I knew about No Man's Sky was simply a "you go from world to world". I never knew how complex or intricate it was, spawning on a newly generated world, being able to claim it and having 18^18th worth of world combinations and mostly all being unique (or forced unique?). Though taking in account what you said, I think the game lacks content to keep the person engaged... Here is personally what I would like to see added to the game.
    1. More animal life, have a feeling of a full ecosystem. Animals eating each other/grass, different aged animals to show generations. Animals more aggressive towards you
    2. More things to explore on the world
    3. More random events (both in atmosphere/on ground and in space. More than just fugitive and warp in pirate attacks. Some random timed/small missions while out and about or just events happening to add into the chaotic nature that would be space exploration
    4. More races, 3 races is cool but it isn't varied at all
    5. More world types, add primary, secondary, tertiary , quaternary, and quinary attributes to a world, multibiome and more ways to explore it.
    6. Faction creation, faction wars, realistically be able to become pirates in a choose how you wanna play adventure. You stated to treat the game like D&D and roleplay as a traveler but I feel like for that to exist, you shouldn't be locked in one category of play where it doesn't have to go out of bounds of the game wants. Example: Sure you can attack a random fleet and commit acts of piracy, but all it does is "lower reputation" which you can over time regain and never assimilate to the idea of being a full blown pirate etc.
    7. More ways to co-op or PVP in normal mode
    8. better AI combat (especially ship combat)
    9. Introduce rarer elements for high end sales and end goals/upgrades to promote more exploration
I think introducing some (if not all) of these would bring a LOT of the player base back to life. Though I know that A. it will take a LOT of time to implement and B. A good bit of player base would never see a lot of these changes mainly because the world generation I stated mostly can only be added to new worlds (sure animal life, more things to explore and elements can be added to any world but the entire world type change can only be added to previously not discovered worlds)

I only have a week in the game... I started the adrift expedition after two days... On my fist day I found a crashed solar sail ship ( class B ) rewards upgraded it to a class A... I adore it!
I have no interested in being a billionaire or running a farm or mining operation. From what I can see right now, I most enjoy finding and repairing ships, selling or scrapping them. Its a nice stream of income, you get to explore and have that mobile mechanic/salvage lifestyle.
I am not that interested in a fancy base. Just a functional place to store and refine stuff. However, I am interested in building an underwater base. There are so many fun things to do in NMS, I love it!

I got back into it after I found out that they had VR. It’s totally different and better in VR. You actually have to hold onto the controls and use them, even driving the buggy. Lifting the hatch to get out your ship or mech. To see everything larger than life is surreal. After I learned the controls I can’t go back to the old way I was playing. And I tried a new approach instead of paying for everything how can I get free stuff? Which led to a whole bunch of adventures. You can actually get a free freighter. I just did a mission where I got tons of free underwater stuff like plans for the nautilus, the underwater helmet , underwater building tubes, hatches, and a scanner that lets me find sunken ships, freighters, buildings. The mission is called into the deep. Then I went salvaging with the nautilus and started pulling off parts that I want to keep and scrapping the rest. There is even a mission to get a free exotic ship with solar sails. And I actually started the settlement and started investigating why they were attacking all the time. Got a free drone outta that which then led me to a downed alien fighter ship. I’m getting more fun outta playing like a space hobo. Go to a system, land, use your buggy ride all over scanning knowledge stones. You can even find pods that have free suit upgrades when you repair them. Unearth ruins, find downed ships to salvage instead of buying them. There is all kinds of classes. Repairing them all the way sends you further out finding materials and even more adventures. Try to actually hack those signals at abandoned bases, save before trying the terminal. That’s how I got the into the deep mission. Before you know it you’ll have a long to do list of secondary missions. The hidden gem for me was finding out that they had full support VR. That just knocked it out the park for me.

Is exactly that is the way of thinking about this game. My 50 cents for new players is: Start doing primary missions, to engage more about the history and what the game talks about and as plus you'll got a lot of things for free: maps, updates, plants, etc.
For the rest, just enjoy. I've played 50 hours and counting.

I think the problem is that planets and not blocky design like in minecraft make generating unique planets with unique terrain and places is very hard. Some huge companys like rockstar could make no mans sky into perfection. Sorry for bad english if its bad.

I never played through any of the new story updates. Whenever I have played, I always just wandered from planet to planet discovering and naming things I come across. I’ve been hunting sentinel ships and trying to find an S class freighter. Sometimes I’ll put on a movie, empty my ship with the most storage and just farm asteroids the entire movie. Then I have tons of fuel for the pulse drive and lots of gold, silver and platinum to sell. If I really want to get profit, I combine the silver and gold into platinum in the refiner. Another tip try to get at least 3 "illegal" upgrades for your scanner, you'll be able to explore and make a good amount of money at the same time. Connected to the scanner and on a supercharged slot the "Illegal Analysis Visor Upgrade", can boost scanning rewards over 13,000% each and can have up to three of them. While the exact payout various between the specific scans of course, it's not uncommon for me to get 600k (can be around 300k) for an animal scan (about 80k for minerals, and about 100k for plants) though in my case I cheated and have all my multitool slots super charged, but still even at half of that, that's still good money for simply exploring.

The most important thing is to find your own way to enjoy the game. I even played for 75 hours before I knew about the existence of the space anomaly space station, that means it took me 75 hours to encounter other players and to unlock more ..(now i played 100hrs)
I believe the essence of the game is interaction. A simple Q + Space movement to dash forward is enough for me to enjoy it~~~
I'm having a conversation with the terrain, moving based on its highs and lows~~~
It might sound silly, but I'm really happy to do sport like that!
Continuously organizing chaotic materials can bring a great sense of accomplishment. In games like No Man's Sky, I suspect that 30% of my time is spent organizing the chaotic materials...
