One day after a big rain...we got some water in the basement...my gun safe is down there. All the water was gone when I got home so I thought it was minimal. Turned out it was six inches. It got into my safe. The only lasting damage was to my Colt Diamondback .22 6". It sat in a wet holster for two days. Mostly OK but has some damage to the barrel and cylinder. I think I need to contact Tyler's Gun Works

Fully refinishing a firearm for use makes sense. For a collector, the less that's done the better the value. Abuse and being mechanically unsafe is generally unacceptable to many put old guns under glass. Customary use and wear is expected. Rareness and condition are keys to valuation.

@@alexjoseph8363 well im no bubba and have never bubba'd anything. Im a machinist and heavy equipment mechanic with a degree in diesel technology. Respectfully, my only point is in regards to refinishing and restoring. That is who sets the standard? I believe it to be the owner of said firearm. They aluded to it near the end of the video that anything with real historical value should not be altered. I agree. But for most of us that is not even an issue. Smart is in the eye of the beholder ( hopfully not BEER holder). Sorry this is somewhat lengthy but its just my opinion that nobody should be shamed for rebluing their favorite old firearm.

A question to you gentlemen about an antique gun with no finish left, but rusty and worn. I just bought an 1858 Starr army revolver with no patina, just a worn unpleasing, slightly pitted mess. Is there any way to gently polish it, getting a uniform bright metal look, but apply a finish (not bluing) that mimics the shiny slightly rust-colored patina many old vintage firearms have for looks and protection? At the very least, shiny but protected anyway. I have always admired guns that have that old shiny brownish finish when there is no bluing left.

Alex joseph Thanks for all the advice and links so you don't think it has more value in its current patina? From what my grandfather has told me he carried this through the Korean War but it has no military markings designating it an issued firearm though I did look up and find some officers which he was would be given rarely a colt 1911 in Super.38 instead of the traditional chambered colts idk if it's true with what he told me but cool story either way maybe he was one of those officers that did get it. And for the rust I did get it taken care of it was mostly the groves in the backstrap/plunger piece can't remember it's name and was in the serations on the slide they no longer rust though I always keep preserving oil on it very lightly brushed on

A lot of people are posting on here that they need to see how to. No they don't . Restoration is an art, and you can look at someone all you want and still don't know what you are doing. I'd have it appraised first. Learn what it is. Simpson's in Galesburg, IL is one of the top experts in lugers. They don't do restorations or sell parts but lugers are their area of expertise. Learn what you have then decide what you want to do. Don't sink a small fortune in a cheap parts gun or cheap resto into high dollar rare gun unless thats what you want to do. Educate your self first and the last thing you do in the process is get the work done.

Whether it's antique guns, classic cars or vintage bicycles, leaving things original is always best. Don't...touch it with abrasives. Using a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water will remove all rust without damaging paint or bluing. Wash off acid with water. A completely redone, like new restoration completely destroys the value of anything to me. Patina is priceless, taking 50 to 100 years to build up. Please don't erase that! You are ruining the thing!

@@billbrasky527 I sent a very expensive rare gun for light rust fix inside near the chamber and a few deep Knicks on the outside. Communication was next to non existing unlike you spoke with his wife which could only give the answer "I don't know" to every question. He was backed up which I understand at all places but the day I was told it was shipped back it was still "curing". Upon arrival the gun was put in a far to big box with no protection padding nothing. It was free to slide around and given how shippers are that's a no go. The gun had been tossed around so much not only was there new deep scratch and indentations everything(down to bare metal, almost puncture like) but it actually busted out of the box so bad I didn't have to open it, I just pulled it out the hole. I made several contacts to the shipping company used & there was a not that the pick up driver sent as he didn't want held liable for damage claims as he picked up the box that way and even took pictures. I was already fuming but figured outside could just be camo coated worst case. Then when I checked out "the work" it was basically a rattle can blotchy mess that could literally be finger wiped off. The gun no joke came back 3 times worse then when it shipped. I took it to a local Cera coating guy who was stunned and call him to see what the deal was with the coating type & job. Once he finally got on the phone he admitted he had no clue how to fix it so he just spot sprayed the Walmart camo rattle can claiming he was over worked wasn't get paid enough, didn't do that kind of work and that "he knows a stupid gun owner who would never know the or see difference after a few hundred" rounds" the gun was delayed roller so hopefully you can see why I tried to send it to a professional. When I called him out in posts a day showing his "quality" of work he & or employees harassed every post them claimed I never sent it to them. It became the most expensive and unprofessional thing I've yet to ever experience in the 2a community.
the same local guy fixed all of Tylers work and it's still solid after 6 years almost 10k rounds and looks like factory. Even the manufacturer was consulted over this and we're shocked at Tylers work and how well the local guys turned out they've even put recommendation on their website. He also qouted a price range & charged 3 times his qoute being well aware of the job so it's not like he saw it and got unexpected repairs.
Sorry I quick typed this and still to this day gets me a bit heated. If you have further questions or details please feel free to let me know. My review may still be on his Google with pictures before, after him & final from local repairs
