Quick Tip: Custom Guns - Pretty vs Performance? Or Both?

  • Master pistolsmith Bobby Tyler of Tyler Gun Works in Friona, Texas, sits down with Brownells Gun Tech™ Steve Ostrem to map out his views on what makes a great custom firearm. If a gun is good-looking but doesn't shoot well, says Bobby, what's the point? With his custom revolvers, he starts by tuning the action - and that doesn't mean just smoothing up the hammer and the trigger alone. There's a lot going on inside the frame. All the parts involved have to work together like a Swiss watch. It's a matter of "timing". Those parts have to move in a certain order, and just like that Swiss watch, a revolver can be fast, slow or on time. Chambers need to be perfectly aligned with the forcing cone. The bolt has to slide perfectly into the leads in the cylinder, just as the hammer reaches its lockup. And the trigger? Bobby tells us his views on what constitutes a "good" single action trigger.
    With the action tuned, Bobby and crew move on to an "accuracy package": cylinder gap, barrel crown, forcing cone recess cut to 11 degrees, further refinement of chamber / forcing cone alignment, and uniform sizing of the chamber throats. Anything that makes the gun easier for you to shoot is going to improve YOUR performance in hitting targets accurately, so matching the grip frame to the shooter's hand to make the gun easy to handle is critical. The choice of grip panels is both an aesthetic decision and a practical one: different shooters like different degrees of texturing. The shape of the hammer spur determines how easy it is for the shooter to cock the gun. Size, shape, and configuration of sights has a huge effect on how well a shooter can acquire the target.
    If the gun shoots like a house afire, shouldn't its looks reflect how well it shoots? Polish out the machining marks, mark it appropriately, and give it a really nice finish. What about engraving? You don't need to cover every square centimeter of a gun with filigree. Partial engraving can give any firearm a very unique look. Even engraving can be practical: it's great for camouflaging nicks and scratches on a "working" gun!

    I have flat out enjoyed all the videos y’all have done with Mr. Tyler. His guns are so wonderful and I hope to have one for myself one day. Thanks for having him on a few different videos.

    I expected Tyler Gun Works to ask me all these questions, I mean in detail like this vid...what Freedom Arms front blade height, color, design, etc. But they didn't. And I really wanted high figure wood, but they wanted to put on Stag,which is nice but they are not fitted well as I expected. I wanted octagon bbl, seemed to be too much trouble at that time. I received no information shipped with the revolver with information on the Bowen rear sight or Freedom Arms front sight or information on the specs of the revolver before-and-after machine work. Which I thought I would get for some reason I don't know. It was my first "Custom" and wanted to do it right the first time, I don't feel that it was.
    It a super nice revolver and accurate but I just wasn't real happy with the whole experience. I will probably send it to someone else to finish.

      Every time I did talk to Mr Tyler he was in a giant hurry. Conversation was very limited and rushed.
      Couldn't see any reason to call him again after receiving my revolver. Nice guy but I wanted someone more interested in my project, in a shop, and not in such a rush getting in a vehicle needing to get somewhere else.
      My Ruger is very nice, just not the "Custom" fit and finish I wanted.
      I feel I shouldn't need to send it back to have this done. My wallet was wide open at the beginning of the project.
      Thanks

      Thanks for your comment. A Smith,,,Should ,,, communicate fully and accommodate a customer's wishes. A Smith here in town did me wrong as I asked for a dovetail cut into the barrel and my patridge installed, but he soldered on a ramp which screwed the bluing up and then flat blacked the barrel. NO Effin good.

    Well, now I’m torn on a graduation gift for myself. Either a customer 357 revolver or a beretta silver pigeon.
    Both would get used a lot, for hunting and general shooting.

    Question, if you can’t get to his shop in Texas how can you get that custom gun to fit your hand?

  • @turningpoint6643
    @turningpoint6643 2 года назад +1

    Full custom guns are great to see, direct drop in replacement parts that let the gun perform and shoot better are as well. But Brownells is known as both a gun parts supplier and the proper tools to do actual gunsmithing work. No it wouldn't be to Bob Tyler's or his company's advantage to do so, but how about showing exactly how to do that cylinder timing and action work. Anyone with enough money can order up a full custom gun, teaching people how it's properly done would be a whole lot more informative and increase your sales on the parts and custom tooling to do so. After all isn't that what Brownells is in business for?

    Is there a reason that basically all the custom revolvers we've seen on this series have been single action? Is there a reason to customize a single action over a double action?

    • @leerethamel3204
      @leerethamel3204 2 года назад

      i would guess its just whoever brought the guns like single actions, they can do all sorts of double actions for customs...

      A custom single action revolver is more traditional that a DA.

    I suspect that, as with metal handled knives, hand cut engraving on the frontstrap and backstrap of a handgun would aid grip.

      Ok kids, put that engraved Bearcat on a table and lay a Korth next to it. See which one gets picked up first and how many oohs and ahhs you hear. These guns are works of art. A Korth is an expensive tool. It’s all about what makes you happy in the end.
