When Simon and Garfunkel did this song, it was a favorite of mine because it was so soft and meaningful. My cousin sent the link to me for this song about 6 months ago and like you, I wasn't sure what I was going to hear and luckily I didn't know that David was a hard rock voice which I don't listen to much too but my gosh, when I heard his version of this song I was blown away. To me, comparison between the S&G's original and Disturbed's version is this: S&G told us the story and gave us the warning. The words were just as powerful back then. In my opinion over the years, people just disregarded what they told us. Now the voice of Disturbed comes on the scene and he's sharing the same message but in a much stronger voice and a frustrated voice saying to us, "Aren't you listening??" Original is my favorite just because I grew up with it. Disturb's is a favorite because it is so powerful. Thanks for your reaction, Jayy!!!! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Take care, sweetie. Peace.
    The words:
    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one dare
    Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
    And echoed
    In the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls"
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence

Companies over People, letting the incredible truths of the meaning of the words of clarity, of how we should treat each other, over taken by "Stuff" as Carlin put it. Paul Simon was so impressed, he wrote to Draiman and congratulated him, and endorsed it on his social media, which he rarely, if ever, does.

A lot of musicians with classical training choose to play metal. There's a reason for that - quite a lot of technical metal music plays with classical approaches in a freely inventive way.
Mr Draiman is an accomplished vocalist who chooses to sing metal - the whole second half of "The Sound of Silence" is sung in that metal style. It's emotionally delicate yet powerful.
Some people seem very dismissive of metal, probably out of ignorance. It's a shame as there are many, many genres of metal and there's something to please almost everybody.
Here's a couple of starter suggestions, something lots of people will find acceptable, nothing too wild: "Awakening" by Unleash the Archers (so-called "Power Metal"), "Ghost Love Score" by Nightwish (official live), (genre: Symphonic Metal). Greetings from the UK!

Warning about what? Do you know? I grew up in the 60’s & 70’s. It’s not a warning like everyone says. They think it had to do with electronics, it didn’t. Think back to my generation. The Vietnam War was going on then. There was so much controversy about the war. Don’t know, about the war, look it up. A lot of soldiers were hated to be in the war. They didn’t have a choice, most were drafted. Think about it. Sound of silence, being quite especially at night so enemies don’t locate exactly where you are. Cobble stones, walkways in small towns. Neon light split the night, bombs bursting in the air. 10,000 people, coming face to face, front lines facing the enemies. Words on subway walls, the hippie generation was here, they wrote “Make love, not war”. Don’t believe me, there’s another video out there, same song, that show pictures of the soldiers at war. Besides, Simon stated it many, many years ago on a talk show. Please look up the history of this war, It was horrific. People spit on our soldiers when returning instead of thanking them for defending our country. It would be a great history lesson for you & millions of others.

It was performed as a soft & respectful song by Simon & his lifelong friend Art Garfunkel. I heard Disturb's version quite by accident & I was disturbed to say the least. Then I realized that this song is as relevant today as it was on the day it was released!!! So, I went back to listen to it again with a new attitude & I find it even more relevant with Disturb's attitude & in your face performance. Also loved watching you experience it for the first time...makes you think doesn't it!!!

This by far is the best version of this song, no other version even comes close to hitting that emotional nerve, David Draiman has the most beautiful voice of any artist I've heard.

When Simon and Garfunkel sang us this song, it was an urban tale of loneliness. It was about a young man, a gentle man, barely out of his childhood, learning hard truths about a cold world. Same theme as the Boxer, or at least the same backdrop, same loneliness, same search for some greater truth, something to reassure. And always in a city. In THE city.
When David Draiman sings this song, it is a conversation with the underworld, about dark forces and mysticism. It is the growl of a fallen man pushing back against even greater evil, or perhaps coming to terms with it. And despite some of the words (neon lights and street lamps), one gets the feeling it takes place at a crossroads in the middle of nowhere...the kind of place one makes a deal with a demon.
When S&G talk about visions being planted in their brains, one has an image of ethereal thoughts, an emerging awareness. When Draiman mentions a vision being planted in his brain, the evocation is much more literal, physical, painful, actual.
S&G's Silence is loneliness they endure. David's Silence is a cloak he hides within.
    S&G's 10,000 are fellow city-dwellers. David's 10,000 are the damned.
Both versions of this song are incredibly powerful. But they are oh so incredibly different.
    ...
Jayy, your face is so evocative. Your expressions speak in paragraphs.

I'm new to your channel. I've watched a few of your reactions, and each one has been better, than the one before. You have become one of my favorite reactors, because I love the honesty, and realness you're giving with your videos. There's so many songs that you need to completely watch the entire video, lyrics, and actual musicality of the song. This song is one of them. It speaks volumes, and I think if it doesn't touch something inside your soul, you might not be human, or soulless. Great job!! Keep it up!!

I remember seeing them open for Korn in the Tacoma Dome. Dave was telling the audience they didn’t need to smoke weed to have a good time, because it seemed the Tacoma Dome was hotboxed. The when Jonathan Davis and Korn came out, JD said “I hear what you’re saying. But I say f*** that s***! Light it up!”
Amazing concert, with two great bands. Didn’t realize at the time, how big they’d both become.

Simon and Garfunkle's Original was a warning of things to come. Disturb's version is a wake up call for people that didn't understand the warning, and laments at the state society is in, and hopes to awaken them.

I cried and was blown away. Simon and Garfunkel first did this song many many years ago but Disturbed’s cover of the song brings out su much emotion. I love that the part he says “And the people bowed and prayed to the neon God they made” how you can feel the anger and frustration at the fact that people are taking a person and treating him/her as a higher power. Such an emotional version

This is actually a song by Simon and Garfunkle. It was release in the latter part of the 2960's during a time in this country when our soldiers were fighting a loosing war in Viet Nam, and also during a time where race riots went on in major cities across the U.S.
    The lyrics ,
    " people tlking without speaking"
Was a reference to how the government wanted protestors to go away.
The other lyric to follow right after that was,
" people hearing without listening", being a reference to the younger protestors knew the truth, but tried to quiet the people by not speaking to them in public, sort of turning a blind eye.
This sing though 56 years later, still holds true today..

As an "older fellow", I was very familiar with this song from when Simon & Garfunkel originally released it. I was also familiar with Disturbed's usual music (this AIN'T it!), so when I hard that they were covering this song, my first reaction to the news was "Wait, WHAT!?" Then I heard it, and it blew me away! The original song sounded like literally choirboys were singing it in church, so this cover blew my hat off! This is one of two instances where (my opinion) the cover outdid the original. This cover gave the song something it lacked before: testicles. And yes, David Drayman's voice was epic!
