Still my favorite cover song ever. Paul Simon had called David Draman and told him this was his song now. Basically David and Disturbed captured the tone and power of the lyrics better than anyone.
How is it that I read this rumor about every good cover? Prince supposedly said that to Sinéad O'Connor, Trent Reznor said that about Johnny Cash, Paul Simon said that about David... Until I see that said by the actual person, I am not willing to believe that line.
Lol, yall don't have to agree or think it's a lie, Paul actually wrote a post about it, and the subsequent email regarding the live performance is verified. You can look it up yourself with a Google search rather than be a couple of catty b1txhes, and while both versions are great, the disturbed rendition does capture the mood of the song better. All my opinion though
@@LongandWeirdName My understanding was that after Simon saw it performed live on (was it Conan?) he sent an email with like one line of praise. So, close, but not quite. 😂
As far as the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement Halls, you have to remember this is written in the mid-1960s but I've always taken it to mean that it's a scathing indictment of people who will recite the Bible and the words of the prophets from the Old Testament, yet all you have to do is look around you on the subway walls and in the tenement halls to see how people are really treating each other in real life. It's a real eye-opener. I love this version of it; it's incredible.
Enjoyed your reactions, so I subscribed. I’m a 74 year old grandma who discovered this cover and the band in 2020! I’m now a huge fan of the band. David Draiman’s voice is one of a kind, even his heavy metal voice! In his youth he was trained Jewish Cantor, as his father and grandfather before him. His brother is an opera singer. Follow music from the 60s through the 2000s. Looked through your list of past reactions of the music I love. I actually still have my vinyl of Simon and Garfunkel’s 1st album with this on it, 1964.
Tomorrow 8/9 Wednesday marks 2 years since my moms passing just a few weeks short of her 70th birthday. She loved Simon and Garfunkel and so do I as she introduced me to the music of her generation at a young age. I was blessed to have been able to take her to see Simon and Garfunkel live in concert back in the early 2000’s. She loved all music and very much loved this particular cover. Honestly my mom was more up to date with music than myself. So nice to see people from all ages react and really appreciate all kinds of music. God bless 🙏🏻
The original is good but this cover is so much more powerful. Simon and Garfinkle were worried about tv seperating people. David Dramin and Disturbed are saying look what technology has done and will continue to do if we do not start connecting on a personal level with each other and society.
@@bencracknellCA haha, love it. I recommended that song to my doctors surgery as the song they should play when you are on hold. They did not make the change and this disappoints me. 😩😂
Me personally , I'm 62 years old so I remember when Simon & Garfunkel came out with this song, and it was definitely a statement song a protest song if you will for it's time , that was beautifully written for the time that it was written in because it's basically 50 years later that Disturbed bring the song back to the 4front of today's modern living and does it in such a way that he honored the song on the first couple of verses (I feel like)but after that each verse got more and more intense vocally and by the last verse the vocal was so intense it was so it was almost like he was saying wake the hell up people it's still going on today , so that's just my thought from me living through both times of this song The words fit in both eras One more thing Simon and Garfunkel gave high praises to Disturbed version and interpretation of their song so that's it PEACE OUT ✌🏾 Great reaction Shon 👍🏼💯
My husband and I lived and loved this song in the 60s. You have to have done that to understand the meaning of what Disturbed is bringing in this rendition. I do tremenously!!!❤
I read a comment somewhere that S&G’s song was a “prophetic warning” and this version was another generation being sad and angry that nobody listened. ❤
The first was a warning. This was like an angel coming down in wrath to reiterate a warning that went unheard. The word of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls. He's talking about graffiti. The youth are the prophets. They are the ones who will determine the future. And we're relegating them to express themselves with paint cans because we don't give them any other voice. Like you said, it's a deep song.
I've never been into metal, but after Disturbed did the best cover of this song I've ever heard. I actually listen to their music. I saw someone comment that Paul Simon, the writer, said this song now belonged to Disturbed, what an honor. I saw the same thing. My mom, who was more in the Simon and Garfunkel era even agreed that this version was a masterpiece ❤ Loved it, loved your reaction.
When I first heard this rendition of this song by Disturbed, goose bumps all over me. It changed the whole tenure of this song & I fell in love with the frontman's voice. It opened up a whole new genre of music for me. You have to check out , "The Light, Down with the Sickness, Indestructible, Stricken," and so many more by them‼
I remember when this song was big in the 60s. Didn't really "get" it. Tried to like it but, never got there. Disturbed makes you feel it! I still get chills every time!
I got to see Disturbed and hear this live, his amazing voice sounds the exact same in person and was awesome to see. The crowd was all silent the whole song...
Paul Simon, the original singer, said this was the best rendition he ever heard. Listen to him live on Conan. Sounds just as great and he had the flu and high fever and had to sit while singing. Still pulled it off perfect. He looks big and bad on this video, but he is a sweet looking man on tv without all the video lighting.
I've always seen this song was a metaphor. The silence is today's society...how nobody talks anymore. We talk, but it's all through electronics. We never have human interactions. "and they pray to the neon gods they made". I think you got the nail on the head.
This is one of the best covers ever of Simon and Garfunkel's song. It has become my favourite version of this song. Now to hear more of Disturbed try listening to Get Down with the Sickness
I have been waiting patiently for you to get to this somewhere in your journey. I first heard this in 2015 at the age of 53 and became an instant fan of Disturbed. I am now 61 and love watching people's reactions to this version of the song. Simon Garfunkel couldn't have said it any better when he told David Draiman that this song belongs to him now. David's voice resonates with you and draws you in. I see something different in this video everytime I watch and listen to it. You've only just started your reaction, and I can't wait to hear what you think about it. 💜😊
This song was to show how ppl were focusing on electronics instead of human interaction in the 70's and the fact that it's only gotten progressively worse is a testament to how accurate this song is.
For the record, this song is very atypical of what Disturbed usually does. Which is what makes it that much more amazing. Before this song, nobody even knew Draiman could actually sing!!
Believe it or not most metal rock lead singers have amazing voices they’re just more talented in using rasp and grit that heightens their style of music
This dude is great, after watching this go watch his review on audio slave like a stone. Dude has pure unbiased love of just music. Great to watch his passion towards talent and its message. We need people like this in todays recent broken culture/society.
This song has been used in so many memes but this cover of it brings out the lyrics to show how deep and beautiful it really is. The tone, the music, his voice, this is how it should have been done the first time.
This is my favorite version of this song!! I heard the Simon & Garfunkel version growing up, but Disturbed put the emotion into it!! I don't care for heavy metal, which is the genre they normally do, and my son had been trying to get me to listen to them for over a decade. I still don't listen to any of their other music, but I LOVE their version of THIS song!!!
Many thanks to Simon & Garfunkel, they have a huge catalogue of work and have influenced MANY current artists.....thanks to them for writing and recording this classic first over 50 years ago, warning us to not turn our backs on the world and it's willingness to embrace "SILENCE"........they made it possible for Disturbed, Pentatonix and others to re-interpret this great piece of music......also, mad props to the video makers....so moving.......
I really respect this man. Not only is he an amazing talent but a good human. He is a professionally trained Cantor. Comes from a long line of Cantors. Out of respect to his grandfather he is not tattooed and removes piercings when he goes home. From what I understand he, nor any in Disturbed do drugs and are all good family men. This song hit me so hard. I was crying because it was the path my son had to take on that deadly night he was killed by a Drunk Driver. Every single one means everything to me. I absolutely love the from-the-heart reaction I found here in this video. After seeing the original Disturbed video with which I was totally enthralled, I have watched few reactions, but this one is so genuine, I just love it!
I grew up on this song, (as sung by Simon & Garfunkel). I loved the words, but their voices were so...passive that I felt as if they'd somehow done their own song a disservice. This was a powerful song that no one really "heard" (sure they heard the words, but never really put the mesg together). This song is all about communication. The neon light is the bloob tube (TV). It's technology. (also later mentioned: they bowed and prayed to the neon god they made...again, technology). Even back in the 70's, they saw how it was already starting to interfere in true communication. But also the loss of people's ability to have deep and meaningful conversations. Talking without speaking (empty words), people hearing without listening.... How many times have you had someone repeat themseves because you weren't actually listening to them? People having thoughts and feelings they need to express but don't. (writing music their voices never share). "My words like silent raindrops fell, and echoed in the wells of silence." S&G were trying to give a warning to a generation that was already ignoring their words. This song was MADE for David. This is his song. He gave it the passion and anger that it needed all along.
Since I found your channel, I have been binge-watching your reactions. I appreciate your personality, sincerity, and your open-minded perspective. I can tell you get truly excited to explore new music. Subscribed (of course). Stay awesome.
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls" Tenements are essentially public housing, section 8 apartments, etc. This is my fav line, and this is what I think it means: The graffiti from people living the struggle, people living on the streets, those messages are the wisdom we should be looking for. We pretend like the average person can't be the wise one who sees what's coming, but they are more likely to be dropping bars cuz they livin' life. We should be listening to each other, connecting with each other instead of waiting for the next Talking Head or Cult of Personality to tell us what to think and do.
There has been four songs in my life and I’m 52, that brought goose bumps to my skin and when I first herd. This version I was like wow I got goose pimples.
His voice is AMAZING!! I never get tired of hearing him. For another mesmerizing voice of Beth Hart performing "Am I the one?", Live at the Paradiso. You'll be glad you did.
People who show their words through art and deliver their messages of their truths can be considered Prophets, who are we to judge 😊 that being said, These Prophets are Graffiti Artists 😉 See where I went with that 😊 I'm really enjoying your reaction. Thanks
Binge watching your videos, love watching you discover new music. I was a all heavy metal lover in my teens. Now I love a little of everything except opera. That messes with my migraines but I can still appreciate the talent it takes to sing it.
You are correct. Simon actually wrote this song, which with all his songs he wrote in his bathroom with no lights and the water running. However; he and Garfunkel disagreed on its meaning. Garfunkel said that the song was a time in future when we would no longer communicate the same. Talking without speaking (texting), people hearing without listening (face in phone basically in a trance not really hearing what others were saying), and the neon lights the information highway that we are addicted to, is our neon g-d we made. Very deep song
I think “the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls” means (to me) that often times marginalized people have a wisdom that we need to hear. They may tag it on a subway or project wall, but their words are important too. I may be way off but that’s what I needed to hear and I got the message.
Shout out to you as you are the person I have seen pick up on the fact that he said, "And the words ON the prophets are written on the subway wall..." It should be, "the words OF the prophets are written on the subway wall." You were inadvertently spot on; it doesn't make sense. I have just discovered you today and subscribed. Love and Godspeed from England.
Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like an emotional rollercoaster ride, slowly bringing us to the top, then quickly crashing to the bottom.....Great reaction!!! Please consider to also reacting to the a Capella group called Pentatonix's version, which is somewhere in the middle 😊 (love all 3 versions)
Boomer here. I listened to the original Simon & Garfunkle version back in the 1960s. I love the original’s music - you must listen to it. But, Disturbed’s version is better than the original, imo. He nailed it. Back in the 1960’s, neon signs were the advertising for so many things. The signs were not easy to make and used different gases to make different colors. They were basically glass tubes bent into shapes and writing, filled with a gas (neon is obviously one) and had electrodes added to cause the gas to fluoresce. (Light up) The meaning of neon signs in this song is about materialism. People are valuing possessions over their fellow humans. He wants to wake them up! Show them that life is about far more. You absolutely need to check out Simon and Garfunkel. They had great songs. I suspect you will really enjoy their “Cecelia.” They were just messing around with percussion and it became the background for Cecelia. I love everything S&G did.
Since you asked about the neon lights, when this song was written if you walked a city street and night you were under a canopy neon lit signs for various restaurants, hotels etc. they often flickered and buzzed on and off. The lines “I turned my collar to cold and damp, when my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light” is an incredible illusion of a lonely person walking the city street at night in the silence of the City noise. Later he referenced these as “the neon gods they made”. And “the sign said the words of the prophets are written on the subway wall - and tenement halls” is simple and deep. Literally it means that the messages everyday people scribble on the walls with graffiti or just vandalism are messages from a higher source, and to me means you would find that the everyday common person has insightful beautiful things to say- if we would take the time to listen.
My FAVORITE version!!!!!! Took me years to finally admit I like it better than the original. It makes me think of right vs left, good vs evil and how there are people trying to wake people up to real life... I listen to it all the time!
I loved your reaction!! The sing is so deep for sure. I appreciated your insight to people having instruments in across the river you got people with music meaning it could be especially today, people not paying attention to each other. It could very well be instead of having an instrument in your hand you got your cell phone or a tablet or a laptop not communicating with other people, music connects people!
knowing this band, and this man (growing up listening to them) your reaction to it is FIRE. this is a cover, as you know, and is the best i have ever heard him sing, thus far. he is a heavy metal man, and all the albums are heary af, but, kudos to the react! (first time watcher, hopefully future sub!)
The journey from musicians and instruments on one side and the silent people digging up the sheet music until finally, they join together This is powerful as was the original created and performed by Simon and Garfunkel. Think of the singer as a person walking through a crowded city street. The official lyrics "The words of the prophets ARE written on the subway walls" just a tiny mistake in this version
Don't worry about what it means to us, or even the writer, or the singer. It means to you what it means to you, and that will change the older you get. Enjoy.
"the words of the prophet are written on the subway walls." In my interpretation its kinda similar to what you were saying about how people don't communicate with each other to the point to where words that you need to hear or need to read are easily ignored like graffiti on a subway wall, because you pass it by and even if you take a moment to read it, you dismiss them just as quickly. Imagine going down into a bus station doing your normal commute, and you see a billboard saying "care for each other." I imagine a lot of people would shrug it off and go about their day. but really if more people heeded that advice it would lead to a better world. This song is one of my personal favorites. this rendition was what introduced me to it but it does have a pretty profound message that a lot of people need to really hear AND LISTEN.
I couldn't really see the video at aii, however, it was a pleasure to see how you re ally appreciated this masterpiece of a song, and David 's instrument of a voice.

Still gives me goosebumps
Beyond powerful. I never thought anyone could do this better than Simon and Garfunkel. But even Paul Simon said it’s now David’s. I’m 60 and I agree.
I saw this performed at one of their shows.... it was absolutely amazing!! The whole arena was silent.
People talking without speaking = Texting.
Simon and Garfunkle's version was phrophetory
Since I found your channel, I have been binge-watching your reactions. I appreciate your personality, sincerity, and your open-minded perspective. I can tell you get truly excited to explore new music. Subscribed (of course). Stay awesome.
This is probably the best reaction to this cover I’ve ever seen.
Simon and Garfunkel...Disturbed does song justice.
The singer is David Draiman and he is a trained Cantor. The song was originally by Simon and Garfunkel in 1965.
"Sound of Silence"...Is about grieving a loved one. When you are in silence, the grief is so LOUD!!!
I love your reactions❤…. Your doing awesome
David is awesome!
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls"
Tenements are essentially public housing, section 8 apartments, etc.
This is my fav line, and this is what I think it means:
The graffiti from people living the struggle, people living on the streets, those messages are the wisdom we should be looking for.
David is extremely nice and humble. He loves to help kids.
His voice is AMAZING!! I never get tired of hearing him. For another mesmerizing voice of Beth Hart performing "Am I the one?", Live at the Paradiso. You'll be glad you did.
People who show their words through art and deliver their messages of their truths can be considered Prophets, who are we to judge 😊 that being said, These Prophets are Graffiti Artists 😉
See where I went with that 😊 I'm really enjoying your reaction. Thanks
Binge watching your videos, love watching you discover new music. I was a all heavy metal lover in my teens. Now I love a little of everything except opera. That messes with my migraines but I can still appreciate the talent it takes to sing it.
I love the comment 'This is a legit performance' It truly was
Best version of this song!
Love your reaction! This rendition gives me chills and his voice is so captivating!! ❤
A great reaction to a GREAT performance Shon.
I think “the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls” means (to me) that often times marginalized people have a wisdom that we need to hear. They may tag it on a subway or project wall, but their words are important too.
I may be way off but that’s what I needed to hear and I got the message.
My favorite cover of this of this song.. his voice is phenomenal in this. Listen to it often..
(Light up)
The meaning of neon signs in this song is about materialism.
The lines “I turned my collar to cold and damp, when my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light” is an incredible illusion of a lonely person walking the city street at night in the silence of the
City noise.
Is a 50 year old male that looks like Duck Dynasty. I love your reaction and interpretation of this song.
My FAVORITE version!!!!!! Took me years to finally admit I like it better than the original. It makes me think of right vs left, good vs evil and how there are people trying to wake people up to real life... I listen to it all the time!
Great cover song! Absolutely amazing. Totally revived Simon & Garfunkel's song, too.
I've seen at least 1,398,220 reactions to this and yours is top 5. You did very well.
Crazy town. Song Butterfly. Banger
TIME-LESS,ETERNAL LIKE HUMAN NATURE AND EMOTIONS,(&THE "BLUES" ,OF A MILLION DIFFERENT FLAVORS😮😮
Dude you did an awesome job trying to figure out this song. I've been listening to this song for 50 plus years and I'm still learning.
Just FYI Disturbed is from Chi town, as am I! Great reaction to this one. It's my go to cover of this song. No other will do.
I love your reaction. Amazing isn't it how affects a person. Chills.
Don't worry about what it means to us, or even the writer, or the singer. It means to you what it means to you, and that will change the older you get. Enjoy.
When song writers and musicians are seperated...it becomes a sound of silence...come together and you have music
"the words of the prophet are written on the subway walls."
In my interpretation its kinda similar to what you were saying about how people don't communicate with each other to the point to where words that you need to hear or need to read are easily ignored like graffiti on a subway wall, because you pass it by and even if you take a moment to read it, you dismiss them just as quickly.
