Wow! So Profound, Your Reaction And Anaylysis Is So Spot On ❤❤❤
You were not ready for this!!!!!
SOLID reaction and analysis. I'm 67, and THIS cover ALWAYS hit me deeply and brings the tears. ❤❤❤
It can't be said enough. Simon and Garfunkel gave us a warning, Disturbed gave us a response to the warning being ignored
But you can't reconcile with people who think men can birth to baby's and that words are the same as violence. And if you bring any of that up to them then trans people will be harmed.
I completely agree. 👍
Very well said! And we only have ourselves to blame.
@Fred Fronkle I feel this is also reflected in The Rolling Stones "Sympathy for the Devil", Lucifer saying you ( people ) blame me for these atrocities , but man himself is to blame .
I came here to say this very same thing.
So good I love Simon and Garfunkel but I like this version better
Daughters jaw drops...Mom just looks over and starts nodding. Yeah, that's how I feel when I introduce someone to this masterpiece.
Also, to my knowledge, this is the only version of the song that Paul Simon gave the stamp of approval and personally congratulated Disturbed on their powerful performance on Conan.
I can't remember it right now, but some comment on the song I read was "the Simon & Garfunkel version was the warning, the Distrubed version is the angry realization and powerful last effort to get the message across". all while being beautifully arranged and performed.
I'm a 56 year old guy and I cry every time I hear this. Not necessarily sad tears but it's such an emotional song and angelic voice it's just so moving.
Me 2
@@bopoulsen4030 kinda makes me feel good too like it washes away stress yet not feeling sad. A very well performed song will and should play with your emotions and a positive feel good one is great.
I'm in my forties and I've heard it dozens of times and everytime I tear up near the end
@@Dudeamis17 a perfectly performed song or even just an instrumental should move us to tears and we should never be ashamed. I can't help tearing up and I just don't care anymore that I do.
But I truly love that last Sounnnnnnnnnd he just hangs it out there for over 4 seconds on studio version and over 5 seconds in the live version. Pure perfect vocal control and the sudden use of actual silence straight after it is beautiful.
I agree...I am 55 and my heart pounds every time I hear this and I am a big Disturbed fan
Thanks to S & G for writing and recording this classic over 50 years ago, allowing Disturbed, Pentatonix and others to re-interpret the meaning.......a warning against an increasingly detached, unfeeling, cold society.......maybe more relevant today than in the 1960's.......
Greetings Mom and Daughter, You hit the nail on the head, with your synopsis.
The original version for me, is a gentle warning of Not hearing and not speaking anything of context or related to anyone except yourself, and to open your eyes and really pay attention to the world around you. Then, Disturbed’s version, is in reaction to the Original not being heeded after 50 plus years. This version starts out, for me internally screaming into the Void, in response to the lack of anything changing after mankind is still in the same rut and wearing blinders. David’s Awesome song-craft, gradually intensifies with each chorus, really trying to wake the listener up, shake them up and feel what he is feeling with him! The steps up in volume and intensity continue to try to break down your own brick walls by getting in your face. To describe his voice’s tonal impact, it starts as Velvet, then becomes like Sandpaper, then migrates to full “Sponge Ruiner’ [e.g. think, washing a Cheese grater with a sponge] mode!
Then finally he softens seeing the light turn on in your eyes, hoping almost knowing you’ll continue to enlighten others.
A rare case when the cover surpasses the original .a real masterpiece!
It's like David reached out and touched your soul. Amazing!
I agree with your mother. I never paid attention to the song back in the 60's. This version and David's voice gives me chills and I forget to breathe each time I hear it. Wow
The genius of Disturbed's rendition is matched by the genius of Paul Simon's Lyrics: "Silence like a cancer grows." WOW!
I like the fact Paul Simon reached out to Dave to say how his cover was great also love the respect Dave showed back saying the pair was great song writers respect on both party’s.
The guy was a trained cantor in his youth. Absolute master of his craft. Great reaction guys!
I love how mom is enjoying the song and the daughter looks like she’s about ready to cry! Outstanding!
Please say I’m not the only one who was SURPRISED that mum knew of this version AND NOT being a disturbed fan, and the DAUGHTER is the one who is the one who is getting baptised in this beautiful ensemble - love it :)
totally agree, mum not daughter knowing surprised me too, great reaction!
I actually was surprised and it made for a far better reaction in my opinion because she had this bias expectation of a theme for the song and i understand why, heavy metal, she repeated albums that were obviously harsher than this is so to be totally surprised by this emotional rendition must have knocked her socks off
its all over social media, along with the actual vid, conans show, there's like 20 reaction vids of it, why wouldn't the mother know
Old, like I am, or young, this song hits everyone in heart and soul!!!😊
Most covers of songs don't impress me all that much...but this...this takes an already great song and takes it to the next level that you didn't even know existed.
You should check out Disturb's other covers. Tears for Fears: Shout and Phil Collins /Genesis: Land of Confusion. Both are great.
Wayne try out 1 version of this song, i really love its from a program called "beste zangers" its just known singers singing music for 1 other. it is henk poort sound of silence, he sang it for floor jansen
Speaking of Covers...... I LUV the Johny Cash cover of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt"
Paul Simon has told Disturbed that he sees it is their song. He has it in his online playlist.
LOVE the Line The Neon God they made How True
The live on Conan is stunning. And David was sick when he sang there and still pulled it off. Really powerful. 💜
A friend sent me a message that night to tune in...OMG I am so glad I did...I was floored.
Hearing it live in concert will give you chills.
The live Conan show was exceptional, and makes you be in awe of the power, and talent that he has.
David in concert? When I saw it live, he saved Sound of Silence for the closing song, and it was such a capstone for the concert. Worth the 75 dollar/person tickets.
Yes, that was a great performance
Agreed, much better than the engineered studio version.
One of my favorite songs ever and I still get emotional listening to it. I think you're analysis is 100% on. Simon and Garfunkel were giving a gentle warning, and Disturbed is angry and yelling at us to wake up because it's really happening.
Great reaction!
I cried the first time I saw this. Totally blown away.
As a woman just 4 months from my 80 th birthday, I am telling the daughter not to sell the mother short. This band has the power and talent to reach into your gut and heart and make you experience primal reactions, taking you from despair to anger to pain and joy. All four young men have amazing talent and their ethos as a group and respect for each other creates these masterpieces.
Not many people realized he had such a beautiful voice until this song...when you could actually hear his voice...lol...as most of their songs are so aggressive. Draiman...one of the best male vocalists on the planet. When he sings....you know who it is. He can go from angelic head voice to rasp/distortion on a dime and back....not easy to do. Also did you notice he can put vibrato on the rasp too? VERY difficult to do. You both had a great take on it.
Every time David goes into the vocal fry with his voice near the end I get the chills, his version of this song is just so good.
I'll agree to disagree but still, can appreciate your opinion. I don't think he (or they) holds a candle to the beauty of Simon and Garfunkel's version, and I guess that means a LOT of people will be coming after me pretty soon. Kind of feels though, like I just stuck my hand in a hornets' nest. However, what I see in the comments (here) is a WAVE of people who must have heard this version first, which I think explains why they like this one so much over the original.
@@StevesFunhouse I've got quite a bit of "age" on me and I've heard both versions. I feel like this version moves me in a way the original did not. This version seems to draw out an Emotional Response in most people who sit and listen closely. 🎶
@@SAGE_Dust Well, I did sit and listen, and I guess this man and group are just not my cup of tea. I really don't like this version or this singer's voice, and I don't think he conveys the thought feeling, emotions or provoking delivery that S&G did.
Now, I have to say, I am not as fond of the "acoustic only" or "in the park" versions of the S&G version as I am of the remixed one from the 2nd album (with the amped guitar and drums), but I think all 3 version are better than this one. I realize this is just my opinion, and that doesn't carry any weight with anyone else, but everybody's got one, it's mine, and I own it 😊😎.
@@StevesFunhouse Nice thing about music... it moves ppl differently 😊 either version that ppl prefer it doesn't take from away from Fantastically Written Song 🕯
@@SAGE_Dust Now, there, you have me in total agreement. Nice that 2 people can meet and "talk" about things without becoming "negative" ... it IS a great song 👍😎
Just to let you know David draiman is one of the most prolific voices in music today. He was a trained Cantor and his range is astounding. Very emotional.
he trained to be a cantor, he never actually became one
I was knocked flat on my ass when I heard this the first time. S&G's classic sounded like choirboys singing. Disturbed's version gave the song what no one knew it was missing: emotion. BG's reaction at the beginning is typical for this song. Stunned, following by the eyebrows moving to the top of the forehead. Love it!
4:48 Well David Draiman was trained as an open opera singer.
That’s the best analogy for the communication disconnection…a crack in humanity. Really nice perception.
Daughter has nailed it 100%. Well done - superb reaction!
Thank you!!
Many heavy metal singers that sound rough have extraordinary vocal control and power hidden beneath that isn't always apparent. This is one of those cases.
When a face says a thousand words .....
The waves of emotion across her face ...... 😍
Simon and Garfunkle made you listen to the words. Disturbed made you feel them.
Paul Simon wrote many classic tunes in his lifetime, this is one. Disturbed stayed true to the lyrics and created a loving tribute. I love it.
Great cover reaction. To me Simon and Garfunkel were telling us to get our shit together or the future won’t be pretty and David’s version is saying oh well the shit has now hit the fan!!!!! Just saying. So says Austin Tx!!!! 😍😍😍🍸😎
the imagery of the people on one bank with the music and the musicians on the other finally getting together as the boat crosses the divide is breathtaking to me.
The lyrics of this song are profound...and so true in today's world....
The first time I heard this cover, I was stunned.
The second time I heard it I wept.
As a 62 year old classically trained violinist, I love this cover, but then I also own several Disturbed CD's. I would let mom listed to a few others - might surprise you.
Someone once said, "Music is what emotion sounds like", well, here you are, an emotional symphony.
Daughter i loved watching you while you listened to this powerful version.
Your so beautiful too ⚘️
Your comparison between the warning and the anger at letting it happen, is almost exactly the comparison I have been using for years.
He is vocally trained has probably 1 off the best voices ever
S n G was a warning and disturbed was anger at the warning not being heeded. Totally agree 👍🏻
One of Disturbed's songs I think you both would love is "Reason To Fight". It's on the order of this, not like their regular stuff. It carries a powerful theme, though, and I think you'd both love it.
Even though they are a metal band, their messages in their songs are commentaries on modern society, and the things that are causing issues today. Their messages are good.
What a meaningful song. Thanks for sharing this video. Awesome voice and video. I cried through this song ❤
Disturbed has really pulled this off and turned this song into their own. Even Paul Simon said he was impressed with it and even put it up on his social media and contacted them to give high praise.
If you want to hear another decent cover by Disturbed, first listen to Land Of Confusion by Genesis before listening to their version.
Yes!
1965 the song had an underlying belief in "if we only reason together" to today's "rage against the totalitarianism".
I remember first time hearing it I had the same reaction. Was absolutely stunned and stupified)) Knowing Disturbed I'd never realized though that David could sing like this... ❤
And I`m crying again and again every time I see and listen to this video. I didn`t get the meaning of the lyrics before this video, his way of singig. It hits me hard every time because now I get it, I understand in the deep of my soul what this is all about. Ann from Norway
Intro mom to their upbeat side with “The light” video. Rocks but continues to show what this band is about.
Oh dear god this voice is so beautiful to this song .. And his messages got to you - coz this is what Disturbed want you to hear " OMG i try not to cry every time i listen to this version but i cant ! I am simply not strong anough to fight it ... WoW WoW WoW I love it ♥♥♥
Best analysis of what this song means. I'm a speech pathologist, and I play this song for my high school students as a message to look up from their devices and notice the other people around them.
Actually, Paul Simon said the same thing about about Disturbed's rendition. He said their song was the warning and Disturbed's was the anger at the warning being ignored. Furthermore, this is the only cover of their song that he has endorsed.
The daughters reaction is absolutely priceless!!!!
People who don't have a strong reaction to this song worry me.
I was watching the daughters face and i believe if there had have been 1 more verse she would have been lost in emotion and brought to teara. He is a very powerful singer and if you dont experience emotion when he sings then you need to check your pulse.
Good reaction, Mom and Daughter. I am 78 and I was so taken with the video the first time I heard it in July 2023. What a marvelous cover. That man's voice goes right to your heart and mind. Beautiful and when he is talking to you right up in your face, you are just gripped with the drama that is unfolding before you. Great job.
S&G were quietly singing their message to a time exhausted by war and death. Disturbed is singing for the new children that are traumatized siblings screaming in their pain at each other.
Its virtually a battle cry for those of us who are trying to wake up the electronic technological zombies and get the world to be like it used to be in the olden days when people actually physically listened and communicated . I remember in the 60's and 70's people still actually communicated in person unlike today's internet based social media.
So many people don’t mention the happy ending. I see it too. With all the powerful anger in this version, I love that it ends on a note of hope. If we listen to the warning and do the work, voices will begin to share those unvoiced songs.
Simon & Garfunkel sung the warning, Disturbed the anger and the version from Pentatonix gives hope. You should hear that one too.
Epic is the word you’re looking for. I’ve seen and heard this and the live version dozens of times, and I still get chills when he gets to the line “and the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made.” I love watching reaction videos because I get to relive, through you, my experience when I first heard this cover.
I agree. Same with the watching every Johnny Cash - Hurt reaction. I'm suspious of anyone who does not tear up during that video.
I couldn't have said it better!
nearly every first time reaction to this i've seen has got a deep emotional response from the viewer
Paul Simon actually spoke about it and said he enjoys their version a lot and doesn’t have any complaints about it. I bet that means a lot to Disturbed to hear that.
💯 agree, ladies. They are yelling at us, in the same way Rage is: we didn't learn how to be better to each other back in the day, and we deserve to be yelled at now.
I am emotionless so I am told, but this song rips all emotion out of me to the point I am all chocked up its a brilliant masterpiece f**$%& masterpiece.....breath taking
Loved the daughter's expressions and thoughts.
Your mum has a beautiful smile! And love her reaction to a classic Simon and Garfunkel song
I am 68 and raised Heavy Metal Bands with three sons. My daughters were into other bands and I just love anything except jazz. This thrilled me to my bones. Loved it.
One of the most powerful covers (songs) I've ever heard. His voice starts out like a gentle rain with dark looming clouds on the horizon. The volume builds like an oncoming storm until it crescendos at hurricane force. Then, when the storm's fury is spent, his voice eases back to a gentle mist with just a hint of the sun peeking through at the end. Great reaction by the way!
Since daughter hasnt seen it before ive been watching her entire reaction. You can honestly see the emotional build-up of "oh wow" to "i feel this" so clearly. The eyes opening. Then the lip pull to control the face, the little gulp then the tight lip close when he meets the neon lights. I knew she had to stop before she did XD and with good reason too. Can easily bring you to tears if you arent prepared
100% my take on the daughter also. I swear she was about to burst into tears. It hit her good. She went to that place.......
It's appropriate that this song came out now. When written, it was ahead of it's time. It was almost a prophesy of what was to come. Pay attention.
Best way I EVER heard it put.
Simon and Garfunkels version was a warning of how this could end up without heeding their warning.
Disturbeds is a wakeup call and a angry yell that the warning was not listened to.
Disturbed is one of the best bands 😊
this song has momentum that is just as important as the music and lyrics, and should be viewed and listened to uninterrupted, IMO.
This cover shows how different a song can be with the the right talented artist performing it. This is one of my most favorite covers I have ever heard. And the video portrays the message so well.
Well said lady's. You've hit the nail right on his head. You understand the meaning of the song/message.
The first time I heard this song I was lounging on the couch with my earpods in just listening to Pandora on shuffle. I was more asleep than awake. Then this song came on. Imagine me in stages going from sleepy, to sitting up, to by the end of the song just standing in the middle ofbthe room with my mouth on the floor. Still gives me chills each time I hear it.
I've watched soooo many reaction videos for this video. The daughter looked like she was going to tear up a little. That's how I feel listening to this version and watching other people's reactions to it. I love this band and David has such an awesome voice.
Paul Simon personally contacted the lead singer David to endorse this cover. It's often said the original the older generation warning us and this version is the current generation, angry that the warnings were not followed. A masterpiece
Another good one from Disturbed is Hold on to memories.
One of the best reactions to this song. Very insightful. Take a bow!!!! 🙂
Technically it's a powerful rendition but Disturbed's version is...disturbed. I felt the heaviness of the lyrics and this just gave me that feeling of hopelessness. The end where he sounded defiant and urging people to march. Stirring but lacked something to uplift the listener. Sometimes as Andy Williams described S&G " You can't help but be mesmerized by just their voices and a guitar. " While I get some people will get a different experience and love this version. Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence just gives me a sense of hope at the end.
Simon and Garfunkel's version was an observation and Disturbs is a warning.
I wish I could have shared this with my dad. The night before the Vietnam War draft, he told me about going to a midnight meeting at the church at the center of his college campus. All the lights were turned off except the candles, they played this song on the pipe organ, and everyone sang since it was new enough to still be on pop charts. So many more than "10,000 people" went down into silence in the next few years, after that night, and this is the best musical approximation I've heard of the rage we should still feel about that.
I'm glad you get to share this across generations. You're very lucky.
Your near instant engagement, shock and surprise at the first verse suggests to me that the second half may be interesting.
You hear this version, you FEEL the live version.
Listen to Disturbeds 'the light' & 'hold on to memories',
Both are beautiful. They do a huge amount for those who have mental ill health and addiction problems. ❤️💙💜
Disturbed has lyrics in their songs that often have a social message.
I always love an original song, and Simon and Garfunkel were amazing at The Sound of Silence, but this version is phenomenal, to really appreciate how good this version is, you have to listen to the original, then this version straight after it.
The analogy is spot on. Everyone should hear this version. Goes directly to your soul.
I've not seen any of your reactions and seeing the daughter trying to hold in her emotions...wow. And very astute observations by the daughter. I'm going to check a few more of your reviews. Thanks much.
Fantastic analysis. I agree one million times.
Breathe. I hold my breath when I see not Hear. Try playing the Am to a Cmaj around a 9th in just Chords. No Lead. BEAUTIFUL!!!
you have to hear the live version , the best vocal ive ever heard , previously it was Joe Cocker with " with a little help from my friends " at Woodstock 1969 . Im 60 and a music geek from the UK
Simon applauds this version.
This has been my favorite song(this version) for years. My mom loved it too when she was alive. I love the memory of running into the kitchen the 1st time I heard it so she could too. We both feel in love with it. Seeing a mother and daughter reacting to it just brings it back even more.
