Carlisle Station on 11th March 1989
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 this clip is of Carlisle taken on 11/03/1989. I caught the night sleeper from Bristol for this visit, a weekend of WCML diversions over the great Settle and Carlisle route. The clip is bountiful of class 47s and 31s awaiting for their next turn of duty. This again was a wonderful bright sunny day with a little cold wind, hence the shakiness at times added with the shaking from the cold temperatures too. (That's my excuse) I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.
So many happy memories here, just wish I had appreciated how lucky I was at the time. Now, looking back on it all, it's hard to believe it ever happened! How lucky are we all to have youtube! Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to share this with us all.

The days of WCML diversions were just perfect times to go out for some haulage over the S and C and branching off at Hellifield to Blackburn, great memories, great video. Thank you.
You're most welcome David....my best wishes to you....Mark
What a great video, such a great variety too!!. Lovely to see 31430 Sister Dora and her spirited departure. She is still plying her trade to this day on the Spa valley railway in Tunbridge Wells, my local heritage railway ive had haulage plenty of times and she's still as claggy. Locos of the 80s had such class , nowadays the motive power on offer hasnt . No clag, No class.

An amazing amount of loco traffic in those days. A brilliant video from Carlisle. Very enjoyable viewing. 👍👍

Another outstanding film. Loved seeing all the proper traction back then and so much variety. I wished I was alive back then so I could have experienced that myself! I can just about remember seeing Intercity Swallow liveried 86s, 87s, 90s and HSTs plying their trade up and down the WCML before they became Virgin Trains.

That was excellent. That really brought memories back. Spent plenty time in my youth in Carlisle. Overnighters were extremely good nights. Then bashing the rest of the next day till tiredness eventually kicked in. Thank you for sharing.

The fans on the electrics were my favourite part of the West Coast as a youth. I only encountered them really going to London which was exciting in itself. Then as a student I was going to and from Liverpool via Crewe and they became familiar. This video brings back many happy memories. Thank you.
Great piece of history and very enjoyable viewing. You have my sub 👍

Can’t beat the 80’s and 90’s for me. The thrashes when leaving the station and the variety of trains compared to todays bog standard fare🤔🙄🤷♂️

I was there that day with my mate Dave Green and we had 47117 to Hellifield during the afternoon.
We probably crossed paths....and Many thanks for your comment and for watching...best wishes...Mark
Most enjoyable.
That was one of the last occasions 37501 passed through Carlisle in its BSC livery. In July it went to Doncaster for overhaul and repaint into Railfreight Metals livery, retaining its Teesside Steelmaster name. Also, 47436 is seen again, which is on my layout!

Not much has changed with the track layout since then, the station looks a lot cleaner now but the amount and variety of traction there is brilliant. I miss those days, now everything is the same apart from a bit of freight passing
You're very welcome...many thanks for watching and for the comment...best wishes....Mark
Excellent video, such a variety of traction and rolling stock back then. I find it rather boring these days.

They must have split the Lowland sleeper at Carlisle back then rather than at Carstairs Junction as now. When I first did a Scottish sleeper ,the Highland one,in,I think 1994,it had either an 86 or 87 on it from Euston and a 37 on it at Inverness if I remember rightly.I can't remember where it was split but guessing due to the consist Edinburgh as now.
Back in 1989, Glasgow and Edinburgh beds were operated as standalone trains, not portions.

47436 with three air con coaches + BG setting off from the bay platform at4:40must have been a Leeds train
Yes i believe it was Andrei....Many thanks as always....Mark
Had it not been for the 1975 Bog Junction goods line pileup there'd be no freight through Citadel. For some reason that section was abandoned.
Many thanks for the info.....best wishes and many thanks...Mark
Was it not in 1984 Duncan?
Caldew Jn to Rome St Jn was closed some point in the 80s.
Without BR where would global warming be ? 50033 is the star of clagg in this era, lives on with new rings nowadays I believe.

many many thanks Dave as always....Mark
Those damn idiot microscopic numbers that Intercity had the idea of using around that time ...
A Tyne & Wear Class 143 5:45? 😐
Not too bad as on the 47/8s ...many thanks as always Andrei....Mark
Happy days but they didn’t believe in washing the locomotives much back then did they. Got to be honest trains today are boring compared to back then but they do look more professional in their appearance from a cleanliness point of view.
Prefer the weathered look so much more.....they seem too clinical nowadays....Many thanks and sincere wishes....Mark
@@spompey Yeah I know what you mean the weathered worn look does give the trains from the BR era much more character and creates a certain nostalgia, however keeping trains clean does give a more professional appearance which is vital when you’re trying to attract customers and tempt them away from other forms of transport. BR was actually quite an innovative state run company but their outward presentation didn’t do them any favours tbh. 🤔Edit…..I recently visited the NYMR and their pristine and clean well presented BR era diesel locomotives looked fantastic 🙂
@@Wishful-Thinking Indeed after all it is a business and has to be attractive.....Many thanks as always .....Mark
