Ahh, 4:3, the beloved format of amateur cinematographers for decades - simply because anything else was so damned expensive. I was reminded of the engineering involved in the line's building when I saw the embankment after leaving Appleby. How many cart loads of earth were required to build that, just one of many. It was also a good reminder of the conditions which prevailed at times during the construction

Have you read Terry Coleman's The Railway Navvies? A seminal book on the life of those exceptional workers and their families.

Very restful and beautiful snowy scene. I travelled this by steam in 1961, main line Glasgow St Enoch to St Pancras

Wonderful video. At first i was wondering why the quality was lower than many other train vids, but realized this is a much older video. It was great to see how things used to be and how some things have stayed the same!

15:51 I like the snow view from the cab of the 158

As I said in pt.2 - the snow just makes this timeless! When the sun hits the snow its beautiful. A classic British route that is still on my bucket list. Check the pheasant bottom left at 17:23 and then the Extreme Sport one at 17:54! 🐦
Thats some incline 19:50 coming into and out of Lazonby & Kirkoswald! 1:03:20 some seriously windswept track at Garsdale, and then track gone at Dent 1:08:20! Absolutely brilliant! GO little Sprinter!

Anyone noticed the ice that fell down the tunnel air shaft in Bleamoor Tunnel? It’s quite common for that to happen and a train got derailed in Summit Tunnel near Rochdale when it hit a load of snow that fell onto the track from an air shaft.

Wonderful views and scenery. There were a few bits which confused me but if it is a while ago that would explain them. Thanks for posting, a historical record of this line in the winter.

Brilliant and not just because of the snow and scenery,, but as a regular user of the line I did not realise just how twisty it was - there are no straights of any real significance. A super video. Thank you.

Saw a Railscene video cab ride of the S&C from Carlisle to Skipton in 1986 but they didn't show the whole route as of here. Lazonby Station used to have a water column on the down side but the inspector said it was "merely a monument". That cab ride too was in the snow and they called Blea Moor Bleak Moor saying the wind there is very lazy and just goes right through you. Dent Station had just lost it's signal box as the stairs were close to collapsing and BR didn't want to renew them so they demolished the box altogether.
In those days Hellifield Station hadn't been preserved like it is now and the inspector said "listed building well as far as I'm concerned it will just stand there until it falls down". How wrong he was. In those days the premier loco of the line was 46229 Duchess of Hamilton or class 40 D200.
47:52 is the site of the now closed and demolished Crosby Garrett Station and the viaduct beyond cuts right through the village.

Also much of the forestry between Rise Hill and Dent was cleared in 2017 /18 as I recall. It looks quite different now.

I'm guessing this is filmed late 2012/early 2013 due to GWR Wooton Hall still being at Appleby? Nice winters ride down the S&C. Thanks for sharing.

Is no more? Yes it is. Ribblehead viaduct still very much exists. Repairs have been done to the stonework recently.

Why did the signal have a board behind the arm?

    • @saundsox
      @saundsox 10 месяцев назад +1

To enable the driver to see it more clearly. Without the board the signal may seem to merge into the background.

What type of camera was this filmed on? Initially I thought it was an old VHS video until I saw the class 700 departing the station ahead of the 158.
