  • A video based solely in Lancashire where ex L&Y lines criss-crossed the county, bounded by MANCHESTER in the east. LIVERPOOL in the west and SOUTH¬PORT and PRESTON in the north.
Covering all main lines it follows steam traction from 1964 to 1968 over mainly the L&Y routes but some ex LNWR lines are also included, in this generally clockwise tour around Lancashire.
From MANCHESTER VICTORIA the LNWR route to ECCLES and PATRICROFT is taken where unique footage of "LION" is seen. On the coalfields of WALKDEN for a North Staffs tank engine, scenes at WIGAN Waligate and EARLSTOWN to St.HELENS and DITTON JUNCTION. A journey by push-pull service via WARRINGTON precedes arrival at LIVERPOOL. Speke Junction and Edge Hill sheds are visited.
Through the nvirons of Liverpool to BOOTLE and SOUTH¬PORT. 1964 scenes with steam on the CROSSENS and HESKETH BANK line.
The other route to PRESTON from Exchange to BURSCOUGH for memories of the last Black 5 passenger trains in 1967 and 1968. Finally the WIGAN to LIVERPOOL route with 2-6-4 tanks close this nostalgic look at steam around Lancashire.
This tape has authentic sound tracking and an informative but not intrusive commentary.

Wow! great to see film of Ditton Junction, Speke shed and Bank Quay. Never seen footage from there before, my old stamping grounds. Use to spend all day on Ditton station. My brother's mate was a fireman at Speke and used to take me around on Sundays when it was quiet and I spent time on the footplate, magic memories

I was born 1961 and just remember steal locomotives passing our back garden on the Liverpool to Southport line. Wandered alongside the Lakeside mini railway in Southport today as it happens.

It's good to see/hear engines being worked as they were.

In the 1950-'s I lived almost next to Old Roan station. The morning (9:00 am) train from Exchange to Glasgow was routinely double headed, often by a Black Five and a Clan class BR standard. Always remember hearing those chime whistles... The evening train back to Exchange, was usually headed by a Scot or a "Jub". HLI (Highland Light Infantry) was a regular. Happy days!

Beecham done a lot of damage, there used to be stations everywhere, and now they say to many cars on the road , our railways were once great

I think you mean Beeching. But, he only closed uneconomic lines and duplicate lines in a very ordered manner. Unfortunately lines with 5 passengers a day, when the railways were losing 100 million a year, can't be kept open just for the titillation of a few railway enthusiasts.

It's pronounced Phonetically /locally :Burrs Co easy as that. Also in another video the same guy murdered the Chequerbent incline branch near Farnworth /Walkden , that locally was said simply "Chew bent" 😉

@@texbankuk These videos are probably produced by people living far away from Lancashire and haven't a clue how places are pronounced. I live near Glasgow. I'd love to hear what they make of Milngavie.
