  • BRITISH RAILWAYS IN THE 1980's
RUGBY STATION on 25th May 1988
Continuing with my archive of video recording between the years of 1986 to 2001 this clip is of Rugby taken on 25/05/1988. At a time where a class 87 could be witnessed on a Freightliner...The frequency of passing loco hauled express trains near the end of the video... I hope the video takes you back to this period with fond memories. Feel free to comment, good or bad, all comments are read and greatly appreciated, but it is not always possible to answer each individually. Sit back and enjoy this latest production remembering all those now long gone Locomotive classes and other types of traction. Many thanks for all subscriptions and all of those viewers who have kindly shown an interest in my material.

One of the best liveries to have ever existed. I don't think there was any Loco that never suited the Intercity livery. Nice to see an early example of the INTERCITY Swallow livery without rap round black cab surrounds. Did love the earlier version of the Swallow livery.

What a wonderful video, thanks for sharing. I worked in Rugby (buses) about a decade later and how different this all looked. In some clips you can see between the buildings of the GEC factory and see nothing but fields. 10 years later a very different view.
As a point of interest, I know exactly where I was on this day. It was my Dad's birthday and we'd gone to Calais for the day. The reason I mention this is that back then it was all very fashionable to moan about British trains and the media et al assuming all SNCF trains were akin to the TGV; they weren't. We went a few stops on SNCF on carriages that still had an outside 'balcony' at the end and likely were many decades old. Compare and contrast to BR of the day and I'd take ours any day.

very good memories. The only buildings to survive to this day are the postal sorting office and the main station building itself. Everything else has changed beyond recognition.

Look at all those electrically hauled freight trains! 😂 Thankfully we've moved on from that now to SO much more efficient diesel haulage under the wires all the way 😅

    That’s some serious acceleration at 9.40 from that 85. 10 mk2s . That’s about 400 tons.

We used to work 1S07 from Carlisle to Mossend (Inverness sleepers) with an 85 with 17 on back in the late 1970s to 1982 when I left Perth....The 85 had little trouble up Beattock and then rattled down the other side, they were a bit of a rough ride though....how I wish we could go back in time......Many thanks for watching Arthur and best wishes...Mark
