I remember when HAWX 2 was close to the best thing we had in the air combat arcade sector. Back then, their main rival was Ace Combat Assault Horizon and it was possibly the worst thing to happen to the genre. Sure, in retrospect HAWX 2 is pretty poor, even worse than HAWX probably, but it had more aircraft and the game has a unique feel to it

Yeah! This was the first aviation game I ever owned aside from X-planes, and this really gave the bug for aviation, especially Oil City, the Tomcat mission, the F-35 mission and the AC-130 escort mission (I never played COD so this mission just melted my young brain) And I still love the soundtrack.

@@guts-141 does it though? Out of all the arcade flight games today, including the Ace Combat games and Project Wingman, I'd still rather play HAWX (1, which I went out of my way to find a physical copy recently for the nostalgia trip).... mostly because it's not a fucking z-list anime plot (story never interested me in these games, I skip to get to the flyng), more grounded in real world settings and planes, and the assistance off mode, despite what this guy says FOR HIM, is actually really fun to use, I used it constantly in air-to-air engagements for the sheer manoeuvrability it offers. I used to get manoeuvre kills in multiplayer pulling hard g's and stalling 20 feet above the ground before recovering, which was only possible in assistance off. He finds it nauseating, I don't, and it's the defining unique feature that sets the game apart from the rest of it's genre, with their canned animation backflips.... fuck that, I have full control over my plane at all time in HAWX and every manoeuvre is down to player skill.

I remember one of the things that bugged me about Hawx 2 is that it takes place after hawx 1 (obviously) but hawx one is in the year like 2025 (which make it look over the top futuristic that it's totally not gonna be) but you had the look that everything was a bit more advanced than it is now. Then you got hawx 2 and despite taking place in 2030 in a hyper advanced alternate reality it looks like it takes place in modern day. Even as a 14 year old it was jarring to me. Also I thought it was funny how it's called hawx when in more than half of the missions you don't even play as hawx.

Topic not related, but the plot involved in the game is the same as in Ghost Recon: Future Solder and Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars…but the Future Solder one took longer to develop, so small details (Character Names and locations for example) got changed, and it *shows.* As for Shadow Wars, it’s apparently in a transition period-the two Russian Presidential candidates have the same name and design but the General is completely different (Older man, receding hair, no mustache), and there’s an additional conspirator in an Older Russian who wants to have his Noble Titles returned, and doesn’t like the Ultranationalist’s War Crimes.
For the record, in Future Solder, the political head of the coup gets run over by a train following HQ saying “not to lay a hand on him.” Or something like that.

I played this and the original Hawx on my 360 years and years ago. Still have my copies of them. They're pretty decent games for what they are, but Ace Combat just did better. And this is coming from a kid who played Hawx long before I even heard of Ace Combat's existence as a franchise. Hawx did what it set out to do, be a fun plane combat came. Though, I prefer the first Hawx over the sequel for a couple reasons. 1. The general feel. Gameplay felt a lot more crisp when flying in the original vs this game, the planes felt a little more fun to fly for me. 2. The plane selection. Hawx 1's plane selection was literally "do whatever you want, just don't run out of ammo." You could fly the YF 12A Blackbird for every mission if you wanted for crying out loud. In Hawx 2, it felt like you were only allowed to fly 3 planes throughout the entire game. The carrier mission was especially picky about it, since you could only use carrier based aircraft for the mission. I get what the devs were going for, but it gets mind meltingly boring if only 3 aircraft are viable throughout the campaign.
This isn't to say Hawx 2 was a terrible game, far from it, the devs were clearly trying to make a good Hawx sequel, but it just didn't quite make it looking back on it. I don't know what development was like for the game, but they did their best for what was released. Also, side note, the aileron rolling in Hawx in general is actually barrel rolling. Seriously, start rolling when you hold Y to focus on a target, you don't invert your plane like how you actually do irl, your plane slides sideways in a circle to an upside down position. Ace Combat 7's planes actually aileron roll when you do it, and when I see it in Hawx, it just makes me do a double take.

    • @ThunderousFolf
      @ThunderousFolf  3 года назад

That's how I feel regarding the two games as well. I also vastly prefer the original HAWX, especially since the first game feels really smooth in comparison to the rough nature of HAWX 2. For the planes, it was interesting for me. With HAWX 2 introducing custom loadouts, it allowed for more freedom for the planes, but said plane selection depending on the mission was limited, especially with the carrier missions. Plus with the reduced amount of planes altogether, there wasn't really an incentive to pick anything other than the higher tier planes. For naval aircraft, if there were more of them, I feel like the problem would've been fixed.
I've noticed that too, yeah! More of an barrel roll than an aileron roll

    • @SA80TAGE
      @SA80TAGE 2 месяца назад

I have to correct you on one part, some missions did limit choice, as they want you to use specific weaponry which some aircraft never had. I remember at least 1 requiring freefall bombs early on that locks you out of planes that don't have.

Hey there OP. I am from the future as well. Just finished to play HAWX 2.
Yeah this game is not good.
But for me, my opinion is a tad different.
    I liked
    - the slower paced planes. At first anyway. For once I could use the chaingun to down these guys
    - the resupply, like being "free" to land and rearm, and regain health
    - the visuals, a bit more polished for the planes, and interior. Also more 3D buildings on the map
    I hated:
    - the fake difficulty, with time limits, low ammo (I play on expert) with too many tangos, these shit "defend" missions 5 fucking times in a row at the end of the game. COME ON
    - Not enough ammo but you can resupply... contradiction? yes and no, cuz most mission you cannot resupply without losing valuable time and then these guys you have to "defend" freaking die
    - "defend" missions with shit AI, like "LFG guys, lets headbutt this headquarter head on without waiting for air support... hey we are suddenly getting our asses ripped apart WHERE IS HUNTER". Fuck you. Wait. Don't move. Wait for me.
    - Shit AI allies, yeah they barely help
    - Shit loadout, you cannot chose the plane, cannot chose weapons. It's forced per mission
    - Cannot give orders. Just once in a mission where it's almost fucking scripted
    - Cannot turn on night vision when I want. Even in the mission where it's "allowed", you are allowed to turn it on once but not later. Dude it's still dark can't see shit, I need NV. And I need it then for other mission as well goddamnit
    - Cheating enemies which do sharp ass impossible turns without stalling. Also infinite flares apparently for these guys
    - Fake difficulty, again. I want to shoot these ground targets with regular J missiles. Dude we are the best fighter in the world, and I'm using HSM from the 90s, WTF, give me newer tech. And give me more than 6 ground missiles, there are 20 targets. Fuck you.
    - Did I mention that I can't resupply because these tiny tanks cannot stop moving forward to their imminent death? "HUNTER WHAT THE HELL YOU DOIN IM DYING HERE". Me with no ammo and only chaingun: "¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
    - Switching weapon is slooooooooooow. The UI is not responsive.
    - Bad russians. Bad middle east. Good americans. OK england. Oh, lets blow up South Africa for... no reason? Why not!
    - The cutscenes are lower quality than the ingame rendering. Nice. They rendered the scenes on a potato.
    - The uplay DRM. Oh. My. God. And I wondered why this game was not on Steam. Well it was... before being removed when uplay dieded. Not even did they patch their shit game so it can keep running on Steam. No, they simply removed their game! Wow. Business decision right there

The review is amazing. But i have one minor gripe, while hawx 2 may not be the best in terms of story, its gameplay was pretty solid for me. I loved the gameplay because of the off mode, if you brake while turning you can do some pretty cool stuffm the ai was pretty challenging for me too, but one thing hawx did amazingly was the progression and the ostn the progression was addictive, it was really cool to finally reach rank 50 and get all the cool late game planes (i was a bit sad because no superplane). Take my word for it, the progression is good. The ost too. It adds british music for the british campaign (if you beat the level fast enough it plays the british grenadiers. I was shocked) and the final level. Oh the final level, it felt a bit repetitive but it gave me chills down my spine everytime i play it, just listen to the song "last stand" and tell me thats not good, you cant. Good review but i think hawx 2 is better than you said

I found HAWX 1 much better than Hawx 2 for that reason. Altough progression sucked, at least HAWX was convincibly put in the Clancyverse (with the first mission actually you playing air support for a mission in Ghost Recon where you really called in air support from the ground) and the visuals and gameplay were nicer and smoother.

@@ThunderousFolf i know im 4 months late but from your reviews of the first and second games id say that the wii version is so much better, not because the gameplay is better its just more ridiculous (missiles can only hit you from a head on if you turn around they fly past you then pull a 180 to try to head on you again) but because it has an ace combat style plot with a satellite laser shooting super weapon that can be remotely controlled by a person in a single seat fighter jet. A story thats actually kind of interesting with a rogue mercenary turned hero type of deal. And uh well a lot of ridiculously funny gameplay mechanics like the missile evasion thing, the ability to shoot your gun anywhere on screen using your curser, autopilot is your really bad at flying, the ability to shoot enemy missiles down with you gun, and last but not least 4 player coop where player 1 flys and has his own gun and missiles and players 2 through 4 also have their own gun and missiles that can all be shot ... In 4 different directions simultaneously. Like i said ridiculous. But hey i think not taking the game seriously in gameplay makes up for the serious but more ridiculous story.

@@ThunderousFolf there's an uploaded playlist of the missions on youtube now (i think the first playlist that shows up has the second and third last missions swapped but otherwise it's fine). gameplay-wise it's more arcade-y than even AC but having played it I think the game works well to make that aspect more an advantage than a negative. Story-wise, it has farrrr more personality than the "main" HAWX games, though the smaller budget for the wii version is noticeable- most missions aren't as long or memorable as the usual in AC, the story moves faster than it should in some parts and drags in others, though I think that budget restriction turned into a positive with the way the between missions cutscenes are delivered through art drawings. But either way, the story is more operatic in the AC sense, and has a lot more personality than the main HAWX 2 version, and the fact I remember it now so many years later has to count for something :P

It feels like they tried to take some elements from Ace Combat with this one, which is theoretically a good idea... but they completely sucked at it.

This was a pretty good game in my opinion it was awesome the planes choices were sick asf but I agree not best but I enjoyed because.the truth is that this shits happening right now in donbass around kiev and Kharkiev
Which is pretty much all of Ukraine
This. like i said war is only just around the corner and this stuff could actually happen think about it the game my not be good but Tom Clancy is all about real stuff .its could be a real thing theas days
was not the best but I enjoyed it
Because games like this train people for the real thing just without aisstance
Anyway great vid keep it up cheers

I remember a time when i wanted to play this but never had the chance. Then i got distracted by the holy trinity in PS2 ... and forget it's existence at all.
And speak volumes that people prefer to subject themselves to Assault Horizont than this one. Even if Project Ace literally went the same route with that one and didn't end well.

hawx 2 and assault horizon are both torture. if you want a game that actually manages to compete with ace combat and is on pc, play hawx 1 if you haven't. it's a shame that the survival mode in hawx 2 wasn't present in hawx 1 since the latter's combat is extremely satisfying and isn't slow paced like former

@@guardiadecivil6777 Actually i did play it Hawx 1, was the entire reason why i wanted to play the 2nd game. But then forgot it's existence once i bought a PS2 by myself to play the Holy Trinity of Ace Combat in PS2 and didn't regret it at all. I play AH but leave it TWICE. Then i learn the game sucked even more harder than AH, so i didn't subject myself to playing it at all.
Now day if i wanted to play something diferent than AC, i had Project Wingman for it.

H.a.w.x 1 & 2 on PC? Ubisoft never repaired bugs where it repaired on console version (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3). I know because... I have versions PC.
H.a.w.x 1? Permanent black monitor and fight with Ctrl+Alt+Del & L. Alt+Tab or logout account on Windows/reset computer.
H.a.w.x 2? Problem with file *.tmp of game if I end sometimes Action in game and Ctrl+Alt+Del & L. Alt+Tab.
PS. I already skip empty servers in the last year's of support.
I am sorry of my English.
EDIT. Tom Clancy's was a writer who believed strongly in the USA. Hence the plot strongly propaganda for USA and "silent" hero-patriots.

it's more like COD 4. russian ultranationalist, russians that works with the west to defeat said ultranationalist that has nukes, british people and of course, AC-130 missions (although somehow, COD 4's one AC 130 mission is more superior)
