Why Personality Matters || Tom Clancy's HAWX Review

- For my first official video back aside from my comeback video, I wanted to take a more in-depth look into Tom Clancy's HAWX, which is considered by many to be average and a poor man's version of an Ace Combat title. I wanted to figure out why it was deemed as average compared to other flying games, and in the pursuit of figuring out that answer, I think I found a major reason as to why that's the case.
If you liked this video and the idea of more in-depth/analytical looks at video games sounds like something you want to see more of, feel free to hit the like button and subscribe! Have a great day! :D

I liked HAWX. Sure, it was no Ace Combat or Project Wingman, but I don't have very high standards for these sorts of games. If it's new, interesting, and fun... then I'll enjoy it. For the same reason why I didn't mind playing Assault Horizon for a while.
The warthog mission is straight up in AC7 so even they think it's a good game.
I really expected this video to have way more views than what it does i really enjoy the effort u put into both Hawx videos :)
Thanks! Glad to hear you liked both of them!

Huh, so the OFF mode functions the same as Project Wingman's AoA Limiter, only with a weird detached camera?
It's honestly a shame Ubisoft left HAWX after two games. The gameplay genuinely looks interesting, but the complete lack of personality really kills it.
Honestly I like HAWX, despite the cliche story and a broken campaing progression.
And also, in my opinion this more "realistic" story mode is what makes the game great in my opinion, superweapons and crazy aces from AC are great, however is good to play something more "groundfooted", this makes it really looks different from other air combat games, it's a shame how ubisoft forgot this franchise, it would be good to see more games of this genre nowadays.
Great video dude!
The algorithm needs to give you more attention I swear
A company doing something for short term high profits rather than being sensible and thinking long term ain't recent, it's a tale as old as time
Right? "Tomorrow's losses are another CEO's Problem but I want my Bonus and I want it now, Baby!" - DeWinter, probably.
Good review. I really think the assistance mode off can be explored and developed a lot more in this game since i feel restricted when flying with assistance on like how you can't stall and can't turn fast enough, well that's my two cents on how HAWX can be a champion on gameplay aspect against Ace Combat.
11:24 Adding to that point: it’s the Clancyverse-there’s always an American aligned Spec Ops unit (excluding Rainbow, which ended up being disbanded at that point due to events in the Vegas duality) out there.
I've never forgotten "Nose down, throttle up" from the tutorial and repeat it to myself whenever I stall in any game.
I actually loved OFF mode and would use time it with the soundtrack crescendos. Never got sick while using it, so that seems to be based on the gamer themselves.
I never had a problem with OFF mode, I actually used it a lot. Once you get used to the view and controls, it's actually quite fun.
Way more easier to shot the berkuts down in off mode.
Right? Even gun-kills were not too hard to achieve once you've figured it out.
I use it mostly to get into position to line up my shot.
I liked hawx. I think I was one of the only people to hit max in only a day or 2 after starting multiplayer.
There was a highly exploitable xp mechanic in the form of "multi-kills" each kill would give you a certain amount of kill xp(lets say 1) + 1x spree xp. But the spree XP was exponential. So after 2 kills you'd get 2*2, then 3*4 then 4*8 etc. Oh and it didn't just give you 4*8 once no, it would give you the 4*8 xp and then the next time it would give you the 5*16xp on top of it. By the time you score your 8th kill you'd get well over 4million xp, then 8m then 16m etc. It was just broken. The premise behind this super well thought out formula was that you wouldn't be able to keep up the spree for long as you'd run out of missiles and die eventually.
Except.... when you went into a free for all game with a friend, and bullied all the other players out of it and your friend was willing to just hit the respawn button over and over whilst you flew vertical loops and if you time it right, could machinegun strafe your opponent everytime they spawned. It was... a mechanic.
At first said friend wasn't intentionally dying, he just, couldnt live for more than a few seconds each spawn due to my very well timed loop :P
Yea, in only 3 games like that I maxed out my level and got to fly around in an Su-47 berkut for a few more days before I put the game down... forever.
Anyway, fun vid.
Good video, I loved HAWX when I was young, a friend of mine and myself pooled our money to buy it on PC and we traded the game back and forth to play it.
I'll say it now, it's disappointing to see how little play the 'Assistance Off' mode gets in the review and with people in general. I LOVED that mode, as it felt so different and so much more like when you have a toy plane in your hands and fly it around, and I've always wanted to have it in another game (that isn't HAWX or HAWX 2) because it's genuinely my preferred way to fly still to this day.
I never heard of other people getting sick from playing that way, but then again I A) do have an iron stomach, and B) never really heard of anyone else who played the game. Still, idk it might be more of a you problem if you also get sick from VR or something.
You know, this game's story could have been a lot more interesting if it stuck with the free agent mercenary angle rather than immediately putting you back in the role of fighting for the US for the sole reason that your character is meant to be some sort of American patriot.
The whole point of a mercenary is that you're loyal to the highest bidder. Why would you immediately turn on Artemis if the USAF are the people that fired you and Artemis is currently paying your bills?
Because they're evil? Who's to say that? They're a business. At that point in the story the most evil thing they'd done is, well, switch customers to the highest bidder. Exactly what a PMC would be expected to do.
They could have at least stuck you doing more missions for Artemis, helping bring the US to its knees with your unparalleled dogfighting skills, until the US made you a high ball offer to switch sides to turn the tide of the war in their favour.
THAT could have been the story of a decent Ace Combat or Project Wingman game.
Instead it's just another cliche America Fuck Yeah patriotic wankfest, but starring an evil corporation instead of the Russians as the bad guys.
Hot damn this is interesting! If a plot like this would have been what HAWX was about, it would have been easily more memorable and action packed, agreed! I feel like it would also fit well into the whole aspect of the USAF disbanding the squadron at the beginning of the game. Perhaps the disbandment could've affected Crenshaw and his wingmen, causing them to gain a new perspective of seeing their higher ups as people who just call upon others to do their work and then toss them aside once they're done. In comparison, Artemis has treated them better during the years they've been with the company, and maybe that could be the reason why they stick with Artemis for that time being in the theoretical plot here? Like they may still think Artemis is making the wrong call by switching sides, but they may as well stay for the better pay/benefits and the satisfaction of getting some payback.
Looking back at this video now, while I still think it's a little silly that Artemis decided to switch sides and attack the US of all nations here, given how companies (especially PMCs) operate, it's less silly to me now than it was when I first made this video. Plus, looking at the whole picture, it was only going to be a matter of time until something like this happened in this world of PMCs being allowed to have their own vast militaries.
(Sorry for how late this response is by the way lol)
Well, that's just Tom Clancy's plot for ya...
Very well put!
There's possibly an argument to be made that AC:Assault Horizon fell ultimately into the same trap, forced into the shape of a Patriotic American Political Disaster Thriller and enclosed by this near-claustrophobic need to pay reverence to the USAF and American symbols, where less mediocre titles gave themselves space to have fun with their setting and mood?
Either way, there was room here for a story much more about the PMCs the setting took its time to propose. Not just letting the protagonists stay with Artemis, but potentially showing the things a smaller PMC needs to do to pay the bills. Perhaps even as an Artemis subcontractor riding their coattails, until a better offer from the US comes along. Playing from the perspective of PW's Master Goose squadron more or less.
I honestly didn't mind HAWX, the heelturn in the story while stupid would be used to better effect in a future game called Call of Duty Advanced Warfare. Spoilers ahead of this point: In the campaign you play as Michel and you're friends with Will in the Marines who is the son of Jeremy Irons, the CEO and Founder of ATLAS, a PMC that answers to no country and has the best in technology. After a mission with your buddy goes south with them being killed and you being disabled from having your arm cut off at the elbow, you are honorably discharged, only for Irons to approach you with an offer: "Get an advanced prostatic arm, and join ATLAS, I know Will would of wanted you to." At first you and ATLAS are the good guys, helping to put a stop to an arms conflict in Baghdad making it safe for tourism, but hunt down a psychopathic terrorist known as HADES. At one point it turns out that Irons knew of the terrorist groups attacking the nuclear power plants around the country but didn't say anything cause he viewed it as a chance to not only bring in more revenue for ATLAS but to be able to get more influence on a global scale. In the mission Armada, Irons has his forces attack the US fleet by dropping the bridge ontop of the aircraft carrier USS Barack Obama, afterwards you get a aftermission cutscene where Irons address the United Nations. "I have come here address these rumors head on. Are we developing a WMD? We are not, because we've already made one." Irons declares war on the world and now you and your teammates who had exposed Irons only to be recused by SENTINAL a spec ops unit of the United States have to engage the madman who wants to unleash the bioweapon known as MANTICORE on the globe
I was about 16 when it came out, I'd played a few ww2 fliers and some older AC's, this scratched an itch, it didn't really capture the speed of other fliers I found. It was ok and a passable game. It wasn't bad, nor was it overly good.
I played a lot of HAWX back in the day, because for me it was the alt option for Ace Combat when i couldn't access it in my country to the PS2 trilogy. It was so much than i end up buying a PS2 in the middle of the PS3 era, just to play the PS2 Holy Trinity, and by that point i played Hawx dozens of times already. Let alone playing AC6. And hardware for emulation wasn't a thing either due compatibility and hardware limitation at the time.
But the switch was like night and day.
It's funny considering Proyect Wingman actually manage to do what HAWX didn't.
I like how the satellite pictures from the Brazil missions actually show Venezuela
My biggest problem with HAWX was that I couldn't stay with Artemis.
Dude you HAVE to try Project Wingman
I already have! Got it the day it launched lol. AMAZING game, especially given the fact it was made by basically three people (One for the actual creation of the game, one for the soundtrack, and one for the writing, if my memory serves me right?)
I was a kid when i first played this game. It was my first arcade fighter game. I fell in love. I thought the Plot twist was great and to this day I feel like other games don't stack up. I even tried Ace Combat 7, but the whole anime confusing plot just took me out all of it. Anyway, Nice review and valid points!
one fun thing about hawx was how easy it was to play 4 player co-op. with 1 single pc copy you could install the game on 4 separate machines and play hawx over LAN (just eject the disc once the game starts). so in that regard hawx was good............another great thing about HAWX was it's eextremely low system requirments.......I ran hawx on a ati x300 64mb graphics card. thats right, 64mb of VRAM
amazing video homie, hope to see more reviews like this one

Turns out HAWX's story is a great metaphor for how capitalism kills itself and is unsustainable.
IMO while AC as a whole is the better series, it could learn from HAWX.
HAWX 2 had amazing replayability, there just was so much to do in that game. Between the challenges, replaying the campaign in "realistic" mode, coop campaign, coop challenges, survival mode with coop, and pretty solid pvp. The way hawx handled weapons was very cool, allowing you to customize everything. The only things you were forced to bring were the plane's cannon and flares. And it also had some cool weapon ideas with the manual guided anti-ship missiles and the precision bombs. OFF mode was great and i used it a lot during my time with HAWX, it was basically PSMs before it was cool. One last thing, PiP. That feature i still miss in ace combat to this day. That little camera that's on the upper left corner and tracks enemy missiles. That was soooo useful.
Yeah the story sucked, that's true, it was very cliche, but the game was very fun nonetheless.
I used Assustance Off mode religiously, i think it was a great addition.
hold up, why does this man have under 300k subs? who said that was okay?
A video about Project Wingman would also be nice, it's a great game!
I've got that on my to-do list! Hopefully I can get around to making that video sooner rather than later. I've already played it, and I absolutely love it! Just gotta get a more powerful PC so that it can handle recording on top of running the game lol
14:48 a company sacrificing long term benefit for short term profits!!?!?!??!?!?! WHAT?!!?!??!?!? UNHEARD OF
17:57 lol, please keep making these
okay but in all seriousness the US does job order completion contracts with PMC and other military contracts, meaning, you get paid for the job you originally promised, not the work you end up doing. this is terrible for the US as they pay people do a job, and even if they dont do the whole job they still get paid the total amount. If anything this would be a plus for Artemis as they get to do less work, put less assets at risk, and rake in more profit (which would definitely help their earnings report and stock price)
Back then I thought assistance off mode was SLAPPIN and I do still think it's cool looking.
7:03 Ofc The most cliché story beginning in the world
Pretty much XD
This game had a lot of hype when it came out. Was a pretty cool game too. Only arcade flight game for PC if I remember. What killed it was draconian always on DRM (even for single player). Ironically, I bought a fresh DVD copy a couple years ago, and it had no DRM anymore. Absolutely none. Just install and play, no disc checks or online check at all. If only it had been so since the beginning....
I also think, that the UI / HUD of HAWX is more toy-like, whereas ace combats HUD looks more believable and consistent when compared to actual HUDs, briefing screens and debrief graphics.
The funny thing is that I initially thought that things such as the gun lead indicator and the bomb aiming circle were added in by the devs to make gameplay easier. You can imagine my surprise when I found out that they were real features on military aircraft
So: Two years and one minor de-orangeification of Project Wingman later, and it's definitely around the same level as Ace Combat.
The warthong mission is straight up in AC7. The sea war against a big sub is tastes like that mission from HAWX when you needed to destroy the big ship .
The mission design HAWX is what made it so boring. The reason the assist off mode seems so superflous is because its tailored made for dog fighting. It's basically Project Wingman's AOA limiter but every single mission in the game is just some variation of ground attack and escort. Not a single mission devoted to a massive furball or any enemy aces to fight.
And making the game take place in the real world just causes massive dissonance with the gameplay itself where you blow up more planes, tanks and ships than the entire world's armies combined yet nobody seems to take notice. In Ace Combat when you do this, we can suspend our disbelief since it can maybe be explained that fictional universe's planet is much more abundant in mineral resources and has much better manufacturing tech in order to churn out all that military equipment, lose it all and then churn out more without batting an eye.
Other Tom Clancy games of that era still have their own unique personality while retaining realism. People love Splinter Cell is partly due to the main character's personality. Ghost Recon Advance Warfighter (which takes place during the first mission of HAWX) has personality from reactions of diplomats and news reports. Rainbow Six Vegas basically use the city as its personality. Tom Clancy games either has the protagonist has great personality or the villain. Your character is a blank slate and the DeWinter is bland. Even without the superweapons and enemy chatters of the Ace series, a more megalomaniacal villain would go a long way.
HAWX's personality was based off of the assistance off mode, a mode heavily marketed but hated by players. If they added in aces and advance drones that forces you to use the assistance off mode with open comm chatter taunting you, then it will work. How about enemy AWACs jamming your equipment and force you to fly in assistance off mode as you try to find it? More varying mission parameter/scenario would help too.
The alleyway must be mitchel’s pet or somthing, following him around and stuff
Good things to have alternate universe like Strangereal in AC or post calamity world in PW is you can be detached from real world problems and politics, but can still referencing real world stuff to your created world. You will barely see US and USSR/Russia shaking hands due to their difference in ideology, while Osea and Yuktobania dont have that. You can consider ISAF as Usea's NATO, while Erusea as mix of France and eastern europe for some reason. While referencing it only, you can write your own stories starting with it and wont have any problems attached to real world down the line.
While using real world, you are extremely tied to reality to make it real. Any mistakes can cause major controversy, like saying Russia created Highway of Death in CODMW 2019, while in real world its created by US. Most combat games cant be detached from US exceptionalism or superiority or them being good guys, while millions or billions of people consider US as villain in recent years, like it or not.
Of course, the down side of creating this world is that its difficult to gain new audience since they cant feel attached to your new world. Thats why ACX2 and ACAH (ACCOD :v) exists, albeit ACX2 did better job on trying to detach themselves from real world politics as much as possible.
I remember this back on the Wii
0:52 OBJECTION, Project Wingman exists.
13:11 This might be late but, You're flying the F-15C which was the only single seating F-15 and surprisingly it was equiped with a tailhook cause the designers intentionally wanted the F-15 to be a carrier base aircraft to remove the F-14 but it didn't of course do to mainly the failure was when needed to catapult launch it.
They tried to develop a naval f-15, yes but that's not the reason it has a tailhook. The tailhook is there for emergencies landing on a land-based runway
@@whybndsu don't forget the emergency barrier

the only thing HAWX has going for me is that there's a foxbat in there somewhere at some point

I don't think it's that fair to compare 2010's HAWX against 2020's Ace Combat 7.
( Mostly because AC7 is overrated to hell. )
Instead, compare bland against something equally unfair: Hawx vs 90's Air ( Ace ) Combat 1.
However the result will be the same, Ace Combat is better in personality.
The problem isn't the characterization or the the lack of personality, the problem is story.
HAWX is essentially a game where Nationalism and Patriotisms beats pure Capitalism, at least if I understand the story right from this review. I've yet to really sit down and play this game but everything I see speaks to the Tom Clancy's ideological political view of US can do no wrong. Your wingman stating he didn't sign up to fight his own country well, what _did_ he sign up for then? He's a Merc, he has no saying in the matter.
Great video ^^
god it took me forever to find this video
A big part of what I like about Ace Combat is the fact that it takes place in its own fictional world with its own countries.
As a non-American it gets really tiring how pretty much every military game is jam packed with the same American uber-patriotism.
Having a fictional world can do wonders in the long run for any game's universe. I agree, Ace Combat being set in a fictional world allows it to have fun with its world and break away from the clichés and tropes found in games that take place in the real world. In Strangereal, it's perfectly plausible to have giant railgun networks, aerial carriers, etc, and I LOVE that.
I don't blame you there. Seeing the 500th story of "'Merica, freedom!" can get tiring after seeing it so many times.
So, you think that the HAWX is an "average" game just because there is no place for a cheap fanservice in it, which Ace Combat is full of? Just because of it? To be honest, I really liked the serious tone that the game set. And this seriousness was lacking in both Ace Combat and PW. I just can't really follow what's going on in those games. A war with a private military corporation seems to be a much more realistic scenario than a war with "rebellious" drones or a crazy ace destroying entire cities. Probably, HAWX is not accepted for what it is, because people put the personality of the game first, but not the game itself. And it's upsetting. Have you noticed what missions were in HAWX? Almost every one of them contained a unique and unexpected element that increased interest in what was happening. For example, in one of the missions (Operation Backfire), a failure suddenly occurs on your fighter, because of which you cannot launch missiles and are forced to protect retreating helicopters with a machine gun. Or a mission (Operation Backhand) with a high-precision air defense system, in the area of which you need to activate ERS in order to go along a special route, within which the air defense will not be able to hit you. Do you understand what I'm trying to say? Look at the year of HAWX release. And then look at what the game offered the player. A huge selection of available aircraft (!licensed aircraft!), each of which has its own features, and some of which are not in any other game, unique and diverse missions, interesting multiplayer, one of the most advanced physical models in arcade flight simulators. And a co-op. Co-op for four people in an arcade flight simulator with a storyline. How many arcade flight simulators have offered all of this? It is unlikely that you will remember at least one game with the same content. The main problem of HAWX is that the game did not receive proper attention to itself and this story ended on HAWX 2, which has only a small part of what was in the original HAWX. And Ace Combat was lucky to get on the conveyor. How many innovations did Ace Combat 7 bring to the world of the gaming industry? With this alignment, I would call AC7 the "average" game, not HAWX. Think about it. I'm not trying to reproach you for your point of view, I just don't understand why HAWX, with all its advantages, has moved into the category of "second class" in the world of arcade flight simulators. It's just not fair.
Not reading all that, happy for you though
You knock it outta the park. Those who said that HAWX was meh because it isn't Ace Combat are only 1/4 correct.
And Project Wingman took all the things that made AC great & ran with it. It's got superweapons, wingmen with personality, good OST & an original super plane that practically the CFA-44 Nosferatu with slight design changes & a different load out. And it's just as badass.
and sometimes frame rate drops lol
Hey you forgot about the Air Force delta storm series which are very much like ace combat series and just as difficult , I love all aviation games also , but didn’t play hawx , I love Tom Clancy games and I passed in this series cause I thought it looked a bit cheesy , but I think I will prob give them a try , if I can find a old cheap copy for my xbox360
Late to the party but if you ever want to try a game with an abundance (possibly even too much) personality you should track down Airforce Delta Strike on the PS2
Great review, instant sub
You can just get the PC version and download a 100% save game play with any plane.
Am I really the only one who found “assistance off” mode fun?
This game is just Air Force Ghost Recon and that's why I loved it
Good review ! 👍
i like hawx it was my first arcade aircraft game on pc but when i got my hands on ace combat 7 and heard how the characters simp for trigger hmmm i likey
You explained what a bland game is better than how Escapist/Second Wind explained
I have a problem and it is that my missiles fire without me launching them and it is very stressful for me. Do you have any advice to fix this problem in my game? I play the PC version
As much as I think HAWX is an alright game, there is one small detail that kinda breaks my enjoyment of it. And thats the plane liveries. There's barely any livery customization. In Ace Combat, you can pick different liveries based on the ones the enemies use and some aces. And each aircraft had their own unique livery, each air force had their own roundel and tail markings (something even Assault Horizon got right). In HAWX, you get none of that. No very special liveries, no enemy liveries, no tail markings and no roundels. Which makes the aircraft look bland.
If anything, the game is an interesting set up for the premise / pseudo-prequel of Endwar.
The plot is basically advanced warfare.
I was Max rank and only use assistant off mode

You want a bad game try Jane's Advance Strike Fighters
I watched some gameplay of it. It looks like the game has potential, but the overall execution it seems was fumbled.
Yeah that's cool, But you should do Blazing Angels 2
Rio is the best level in the game because it feels like an Ace Combat level. There's a massive battle going on across all fronts, the atmosphere's pretty good, and there's even an ace squadron that shows up for you to face off with, who are legitimately fun to fight.
They are the only enemy ace squadron in the game.
My GOD this game's plot was fucking dumb. Even Joint Assault had a better idea, and that relied on the villain sparking a war to sell fucking insurance policies.
You never mentioned over g fighter that was a great aerial combat game
Also i think one of HAWX's biggest flaws is the final mission is probably one of the worst final missions ever. You fly through a really easy trench run with an invisible wall above you for about 3 minutes then you blow up a single building... wow riveting... riveting gameplay ubisoft
AC7 have a mission like that so it came a full circle. 😂😂
I would've preferred OFF mode if it didn't have such a stupid camera angle and if only it was just behind the aircraft like in third person but with all of the HUD elements turned off.
Calling Assistance Off Mode something that doesn’t leave much of an impression is kinda off.
I’ve not had a game give that experience in the Flight Sim genre.
I think it’s just a personal thing, it not sitting well with you.
Not trying to throw shade here, just commenting, because I never knew anyone that DIDNT use it- and I have played LOT of HAWX (both of em) over the years.
i have hawx on my ps3 and it really good
The plot of the novel HAWX had a more logical reason for the PMC turning on the US.
I remember noticing there was a novel on HAWX, but I didn't check it out too much. Is it an overall good read? (Good to know the reasoning is more logical lol)
And because of this comment being unanswered, I’m going to read it, so I’ll edit once I find it.
Honestly I liked assistance off mode and played a lot of the campaign levels with it "Intentionally" and didn't experience the nausea you guys keep talking about.
Or who knows maybe my 9 year old brain was to captured by the feature
It's weird that the cover aircraft for hawx is a rafale when you're playing as americans in hawx but you know. whatever
I picked it up for 5 bucks and like it.
Do not ever say that because an arcade flight simulator takes place in reality doesn't mean it can't always be bad.

I'm hoping to be able to make a review on that in the near future! I just have to find a way to record it without the footage being choppy and laggy since my PC isn't a gaming one at heart lol

@@DpNemo Surprisingly enough I found PW a good degree more enjoyable compared to AC7. I cant really put a finger on it, but between the pretty decent story, the fun characters, the ending battle against Crimson 1, and best waifu Prez, I think PW really put itself up there with Ace Combat. That isnt to say that it was objectively better or worse than AC7, only that I personally found the experience more pleasant in comparison. You're making a mistake...
Artemis did not switch side for immediate revenue, but in preparation for it's attack on the US. They needed one ally on the continent (las Trinidades). And they took the opportunity to crush a US naval battle group in the process !
It was a strategic decision, not a business one !
(Now you could argue that it was a strategic mistake, because their early betrayal would put the US on higher alert, reducing the element of surprise)
Ace Combat > HAWX
HAWX flight control is best for pc rather ace combat is great for controller not for pc
