    I never bothered to learn how to type properly, so I have been doing a weird hunt and peck variation for literally decades. Back in early september I started learning how to touch type, and keybr tells me my speed then was around 11 wpm (forcing myself to use the correct fingers and not look at the keyboard was brutal!!), and now I am up to 47 wpm which I am feeling pretty solid about. The challenge I have now is that, while I am getting faster doing various lessons and speed tests, everything goes to crap when I start doing some typing off the top of my head in a RUclips comment or something like that. I'm going to stick with it though and am looking forward to some monkeytype action. I am getting a little bored with keybr and 10fastfingers. This video came right on time!

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78  3 года назад +12

      So glad to hear the video found you at a good time! Haha. I totally hear you on the brutality... trying to remap your fingers to the "proper" format takes a while but as you keep practicing the speed naturally builds over time. In terms of the "off the top of the head" thing, that's a really good observation! I hadn't thought of them as different, at least not in-depth. This sort of brings to mind the concept of "type in words" that I sort of touched on in this video.
      Perhaps if, when taking a test on something like monkeytype (or anything that uses actual words), try focusing on typing out the words instead of each individual letter (i.e. "interest" instead of "i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t"). Maybe as you bridge this gap then typing as you think/speak in your head will improve and even out with the tests? Food for thought I suppose! Super fascinating comment haha. Thanks for stopping by and so glad you got some value from the video 🔥

      @michael_harren 3 года назад +1

      @@markbacon78 oh yeah! I should have commented on the word thing, this made me realize another parallel between touch typing and playing the piano. I am a pianist/teacher and a really good sight reader which has a lot to do with some of the things you talked about in this video as they relate to typing. Instead of reading individual notes on sheet music, I have learned to also recognize patterns - distances between notes, and also chord shapes so that speaks to your suggestion to read words instead of letters. Also, when reading music I learned to read a measure or two ahead of what I am currently playing so I know what’s next. I see that slowly sneaking into my typing too. I’m glad I’m in that habit, and also in the habit of using all of my fingers at the piano. I think that saved me some time with coordination, especially with pinky and ring finger.
      Anyway, I love your videos. It has been really fun to see other folks’ process too.

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78  3 года назад +1

      Oh that’s awesome! I played the piano for about 9 years before heading to school. I’ve wanted to draw on that parallel before but hadn’t heard of it elsewhere so it’s good to corroborate haha. And hey- maybe it helps the other way around! 🔥

    • @markbacon78

      I think if you want to switch layouts, go for it! You can always bring touch typing with you, it'll just be the similar process of learning how to do it in the first place. Honestly I've always just used bluetooth keyboards 'til they break. I made a video about a mechanical keyboard but all in all I just always say "equipment doesn't matter" for just about anything haha. If it's uncomfortable though, definitely change! I think it's more or less about form than it is about the keyboard. I'm just looking for practicality and functionality, but there's always room for personal preference!

    Any suggested sites/tutorials for help after an injury permanently reduces use of one hand? I'm a secretary, so this is a huge issue! My right pinky and ring finger are almost useless and I've gotten used to pecking & peeking. :)

    • @markbacon78
      @markbacon78  3 года назад +2

      The first site that comes to mind would be keybr and, in terms of what works, find something that's comfortable! KeyBR has the "proper" finger mappings (what finger hits what key) so I would take a look at that and see what can cover what (e.g. using middle finger or left pointer to cover what the right pointer would type).
      Once you find what's comfortable for you, practice practice practice! It might be slower than pecking when it comes to getting used to it, but I'm sure you'll get used to it quickly. All in all, find what works best for you- I hope it all goes well!

    i am a beginner at typing, i have watched a lot of RUclipsrs making videos on how to type faster but no one have actually told it from the perspective of a beginner. like i am at 15 -19 wpm i cannot find anything who can help me learn that how much time it will take me to go from 15 wpm to 40 wpm, how many days i should give to reach my goal? everyone is talking about going from 100wpm to 150 wpm or 180wpm, bt nobody talks about beginners. i saw you replying to comments so i m hoping for an answer from you. also its been more than a month that i started typing practice everyday. i was at 8wpm on my frst day, and on 35th day i took it till 19wpm. i m applying all the tips i learnt, to sit properly, proper position of screen, use of 10 fingers, focusing on accuracy, still i dont knw why i m that slow

      I actually just recorded a whole video on how to type as a beginner so that's great timing. That should be up in a few days, but all in all keep up the practice. It's hard to get into things, especially as we're new to them, so continue your practicing. If you're using websites that aren't goal oriented, I would check out some websites that can give you lessons and milestones (typing club, typing academy, etc.)
      All in all, 8wpm to 19wpm is a great jump! Keep in mind that's progress and improving is a long game. Keep it up 🔥

      slow down a bit to focus on accuracy. I know that sometimes my finger will dip too far "down" before it gets all the way across, i.e. on the way to the 'L ' I hit 'K'. Identify the problem, practice it out is the short answer I'd recommend.

      My hands move all the time. I use to do the correct method when learning in middle school with a keyboard cover. But I was still slow. My hands move anytime I try to stay in correct path unless I’m looking at the keyboard and that’s cause my index fingers be reaching and crossing over one another for the long to reach letters which moves my end fingers from the original position. I have no Raytheon sometimes my right hand takes over the most keyboard not staying in a particular position. Or they both go back and forth but never stay in uniform. And I go faster that way with less mistakes. But because my hands do this and I work with computers where keyboards are all diffrent in diffrent format I always mess up unless I read a part and then look down or I know what ima type and still look down at my keyboard.

      "blinds" as in people who are blind?
      Websites are inherently a visual thing, so I'm unsure about any that are primarily sound based. However, I know of hardware that is much more optimized for those who know how to type with braille and that's probably better...? Any website could work, technically, if you have a friend who can read off the feedback. There are two buttons on the F and J keys (QWERTY) that can be used as a guide.
