I really hate posting comments....BUT for this topic....I HAVE to!!
The Ministry of Transportation has a motorcycle riders handbook. There is a small paragraph which touches on, "lane splitting and filtering." The opinion of the MTO is clearly stated that, lane splitting and lane filtering are not safe practises and should not be attempted. This opinion was obviously stated by those who have never rode a motorcycle a day in their lives and the statement that it is an unsafe practise was backed up by an in depth study, conducted by an independent and unbiased party....NOT!
So, basically the MTO is saying, "we have no experience riding motorcycles, we have no authority in creating laws under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and we have no proof that lane splitting/filtering is unsafe.....BUT we just don't like the idea, so therefore, no one should do it. Welcome to fucking Canada!!
The reason the MTO says it is unsafe and should not be done is because they can not say it is illegal. There is, to my knowledge, NO statute under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act that SPECIFICALLY deems "lane splitting" or "lane filtering" to be an illegal maneuver. This is why, if caught doing it, the police will charge you with a completely different offence...."stunt driving," "dangerous driving"...of the six riders in Ontario that have actually fought these completely bogus charges, all six riders had the charges thrown out and dropped in court.
There has been an independent, undias study done.....the ONLY one that I know of.... The University of Berkeley in Southern California.
"While inching along congested roadways, California drivers will often see motorcyclists zip by, eking out a path in the narrow space between two lanes of cars. This practice of passing other vehicles traveling in the same direction by sharing their lane is called lane-splitting, and a new report by UC Berkeley transportation researchers finds that no matter what some angry drivers might think, it does not necessarily pose a greater risk for injury.
An analysis conducted by researchers from UC Berkeley’s Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) found that lane-splitting is relatively safe if done in traffic moving at 50 mph or less, and if motorcyclists do not exceed the speed of other vehicles by more than 15 mph."
This paragraph is just a small portion of the finds and goes into greater detail if read in its entirety. The problem with logic and fact....they eliminate all forms of argument, no one can argue with logic or fact.
In Canada, we have an idiot who has been selected as the, "Minister of Public Health and Safety." This idiots main priority as such, is to show due diligence in keeping Canadians SAFE! Last year in Canada, over 200 motorcycle riders lost their lives because of "distracted driving." Over a dozen of those were sitting behind vehicles at red lights when they were crushed to death by drivers approaching the light and looking down at their cell phones. If ONE person dies, that is ONE person too many! Enforcing stricter laws for distracted driving is not going to eliminate cell phone use with driving, therefore riders are going to continue to die. Removing riders from the equation, allowing them to protect themselves by going to the front of the line, will minimize, if not completely eliminate riders from being injured or killed in this manner. "DUE DILIGENCE!!" What the hell is the Minister of Public Health and Safety waiting for, more riders to die???
The FIRST rule of riding a motorcycle is.........SAFETY!!! If you attend any course, this is the first thing you are taught.....it starts with proper gear and then continues from there. Everything you learn, everything you are taught, every maneuver, every action....it is ALL done to make you safer as a rider! Our government, in all their infinite wisdom even implemented the "graduated licensing program" for motorcycles. Their reason for this was to give riders a chance to obtain more experience before they were given the full riens. We all know the REAL reason...."money grab!" Nonetheless, they still claim it was done for, SAFETY. My question is, if there are things that we as riders can do to improve our safety while riding, why is the government putting up obstacles to prevent that from happening????
I have been driving and riding for over thirty years.....I ALWAYS filter and ALWAYS will!! In the event that I feel I am safer by lane splitting, I will and I do....I will also continue to do so. If the government won't look out for my best interest by officially legalizing lane splitting and lane filtering, then I will look out for my best interest by doing whatever keeps me safer!!!!

100% agree with you about educating the public first. Yes, there are certainly reckless bikers who don't quite use the best judgement and take unnecessary risks, but I feel that the most dangerous aspects of filtering is public attitude. Where the public knows it's safer and more efficient in traffic for everyone (not just the bikers), there seems to be a more symbiotic relationship between all motorists. Here in Quebec, people are hyper-aggressive and take it as a personal insult if you get ahead of them. Using your turn signal is not taken as communicating your next move, it's seen as a challenge to someone else's dominance of their lane and an affront to their driving skill. When I tell people here that I ride a motorcycle, quite often the first remark is "Do you drive between the cars at stop lights? I hate it when bikes do that!" Not realizing that that biker who goes to the front of the line just made that traffic light more efficient (and would smoke any car anyways, so it's not like they'd slow anyone down off the line). So yeah, long story short, make it legal, but invest in driver re-education. Cheers mate.

Lane splitting and lane filtering actually has NOTHING to do with saving people time. It is about being safer as a rider. It is a proven fact that if done properly, splitting and filtering increases a riders safety. Honestly, I could care less about saving three tenths of a second and twenty feet for the car behind me, I would rather not become a hood ornament sitting at a red light, or get run off the road because some idiot makes a lane change illegally while on their cell phone.

I like parking my bike in the driveway after being out for a ride and going in the house to see my children and wife.....the best way for me to be able to do that is to, ride safe EVERY time I am out. Lane splitting and lane filtering keeps me safer.......that's why I do it and will continue to!!! I also carry a firearm on me most days. Too many Canadians die every year counting on the government to protect them. I am my own keeper!! If some day I have to answer in court for using my handgun to protect my life or answer in court for being charged for lane splitting/filtering.....then I guess I will deal with that if the day ever comes BUT at least I will be ALIVE to do so!!!!

i have been driving motorcycle since early 80 and i for safety sake and for my own safety, i def would not recommand line splitting or filtering specially the way drivers are selfishing driving. Plus if you add all the distraction that a driver has, gps, radio, phone (not legal in canada) etc and the none paying attention would put a motorcycle on the loosing side. Plus while driving a car, you can notice the car moving sideway within their painted lines within their lanes. Filtering and lane splitting def not for me...

From the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website

And why is always squids on crotch rockets I have to deal with in downtown Toronto while riding a bicycle in the curb lane. It's dangerous enough as it is with car doors, pedestrians walking in between cars, cars not signalling & during the pandemic with curbside cafes taking up much of the lane now we have to deal with idiot squids racing up the curb lane behind us.

Maybe you feel this way because not enough riders die every year being crushed between vehicles sitting at red lights in Canada, and for some reason you think MORE should die, before something is actually done about it?
How about, you have absolutely no fact based, logical argument that could support a reason, other than YOU just don't like the idea of someone getting in front of you at a red light because you're just SO important and entitled.....
I even bet, you're the kind of self entitled asshole who drives around with a cell phone in your hand AND STILL swears that you are such a good driver doing so, YOU could NEVER cause an accident.

@@mrdirtdart2239 It isn't proven to increase rider safety, many rider accidents are caused by the rider getting cut off by someone doing a lane change. For driving to be safe for everyone, there must be rules that apply to all that share the road. Whether a bike or a car, you are a motored vehicle on the road. You follow the rules which include staying appropriately in your lane and switching lanes in an appropriate manner (signal light -> mirror check -> shoulder check -> smooth and controlled lane change). If you are worried about someone coming up from behind while stopped in traffic, you do what all drivers should do. Keep room between yourself and the vehicle in front. As cars pull up behind you and stop, you can slowly close the gap in front. In the event the person behind you doesn't look like they are going to stop, you take an escape route just as cars are expected to do. I would say that squeezing between lanes of traffic as an escape path in the event of an emergency should be the only acceptable time to do it. This is an escape path that isn't even available to cars most times as the gap is often too small for a car to fit which should make up for the lack of a safety cage that the body of a car offers but bikes lack.

"A study commissioned by the California Highway Patrol was conducted by the University of California at Berkeley between June 2012 and August 2013. 7836 motorcycle crashes were closely examined, and 1163 of them occurred while the rider was lane splitting. Riders who were lane splitting at the time of their crash, were less likely to be injured than those who weren’t. The reason for this could be that the lane splitting accidents happened at speeds between 1 to 30 mph. There were 45% less head injuries, 21% less neck injuries, 32% less torso injuries, 12% less arm or leg injuries and 55% less fatalities. The data shows the safest way to lane split is to ride at speeds of less than 30 mph, and less than 10 mph above the speed of the surrounding traffic. When these conditions are not followed, the injury rate in all categories rises. The report also shows that lane splitters were less likely to get rear-ended by another vehicle, but more likely to rear-end another vehicle."

As a motor vehicle, you should be in the lane as a car would. Worried about someone coming up behind you? Keep room in front of you and have an escape route. The exact same safe driving practice taught to drivers. You calling them "entitled" is projection. You display entitlement with your comment that motorcyclist should be able to just cut in front of everyone else. Let's put it this way, if I'm at a light and I'm at the front of the line waiting for the light to turn green to go straight and someone pulls up next to me on their motorcycle in my lane with the intent to go straight, sorry but I was there first and it's my right of way. Yes, but once people get experience riding/driving, acceleration is done by feel. That is, the amount of G-force felt on the body. People are all different when it comes to this. So you get some young guy in a decked out "lawn mower" who thinks he added 100 more hp by installing a new air intake and exhaust, who will likely want to feel more acceleration than the old guy on a cruiser even though the cruiser would leave the young guy's 20 year old Mitsubishi in the dust.
