I live in Cali. I don’t see cars moving to make room. Instead, I see quite a few try to chase me and race or tailgate. Even on Sunday, a guy in a Honda started speeding behind me. At the next stop sign I let him go. He proceeded to short stop and speed another couple miles till he pulled into his gated neighborhood. I figured it’s better to let an angry person run ahead of me. Next time I don’t think I’ll do that. I just wasn’t in the mood to be chased by a crazy person.

Same here in São Paulo / Brazil. Drivers here are pretty used to motorcycles all around them all the time and it works very well. The city even separates an entire section of the lanes where the first cars would be in the traffic lights just as "motorcycle space", and cars have to effecticely leave that all space to the bikes so they can park in front as they wait for the lights to go green.

There's already envy because bikers are enjoying the ride while commuters are on the stressful unpaid portion at the start and end of their work day. How much more resentment and animosity will result when motorcycles are allowed to ignore the lanes and cut to the front of the line? Cars will intentionally stop too close to each other for a bike to pass between and the first time a motorcycle clips a car's mirror there will be an altercation leading to gunfire or vehicular homicide.

Californian here: It's so normalized that easily 40-50% of drivers will edge over to give you extra room when you filter or split in slow traffic, at least in the Bay Area. I live in a big, dense city, riding wouldn't be nearly as worth it without splitting.
On the environmental factor, filtering IS better for the environment compared to the alternative of sitting in traffic. The time saved on idling and overall trip time saves gas. Motos have worse emissions than cars, so we should want to minimize wasted run-time.

    • @planets9102

@@planets9102 I think motorcycles are dirtier engines but I think its mostly carbureted air cooled engines, like in Harleys. Emission has to do more with motorcycles releasing more unburnt fuel compared to cars, but I think liquid cooled, fuel injected motorcycles are. a bit cleaner, though, they still lack all the sensors you have in cars, so they are still not as clean.
They do still burn less fuel but less fuel are less emissions are two different things.

I think it is illegal to keep a motorcycle from lane splitting or especially filtering in California.
But yes here in Texas the legitimate points would definitely be 1. Ease of traffic for trucks and autos
      2. Using less space in lanes of slow moving or stopped traffic
      3. Safety for motorcycle riders
      4. Use of shoulder, emergency vehicle or bicycle lanes or HOV lanes in slow or stopped traffic
      5. Due to phone uses and text messaging and inattention and distracted driving of autos and trucks, it is safer for the motorcyclist to filter or lane split.
      6. Rear ending a motorcycle by cars or trucks can be serious or even deadly for a motorcyclist taking up the space sitting in or occupying a slow moving lane that can be used by much heavier vehicles.

In South Africa both splitting and filtering is allowed. It's one of the reasons I prefer riding a bike - the ability to get through traffic. I adjust my speed to the speed of traffic so that I'm not going faster than about 20km/h in respect of traffic speed. And I only do it when traffic is slowed down. No high speed splitting - that's way too dangerous.

I think here in the UK our roads are small compared to US and get very congested. Stopping motorcycles being able to filter would only compound the issue.
Also about bikes getting ahead. Here in UK we are used to it and it is not an issue but the amount of videos I've seen where US drivers just get really annoyed when a bike get in front.

I watch you because you're not only informative, but because you understand Austin traffic. Even with 5 years of motorcycle experience, I would still consider myself a beginner, because there's always so much more I can learn since I am a casual rider. I don't do track days, I don't go out on group rides anymore, never tried stunting, and really liked my starter bike, a standard 2006 Suzuki GS500F. It wasn't too much, but not too little. I had to sell her due to the pandemic and money being tight as a luxury I couldn't keep up with, that's neither here nor there.
What I'm trying to say is, I think you're 100% correct about filtering, and as someone who has had to sit in traffic at the exact spot on 183 where you began your video in the 110 degree heat, it's awful. Especially if let's say you get to the front of a protected Left Turn Light, and the sensor never activates. It sucks. I would get behind trying to change that legislation here in Austin on a small scale, like a test city, and then try to present that evidence to Texas DPS, and the State Legislature. Splitting, especially at speed, I'm leery of, possibly due to my own inexperience, and lack of trust in Texas drivers. I would love it if more was taught about motorcycles in Drivers Ed, might save just one extra person a year, and that's worth it.

@@WingfanSportsyour thinking about it in a what's in it for me deal. It's about keeping the flow of traffic moving. The quicker you can get excess vehicles off the road in heavy traffic the better. Why should a motorcycle just sit in traffic when they clearly can maneuver around others because they are smaller. This maneuverability is what saves cyclists lives. Filtering also has the affect of making people aware that there's a motorcycle on the road with them. The less interaction with large non-manueverable vehicles a cyclist needs to deal with the better. MC's have less traction than cars, no cage, no A/C, have to deal with distracted drivers, left hand turners. Yeah, lane filtering is far safer and more beneficial for everyone involved.

I was pretty happy when Arizona enacted a lane filtering law. The heat, for one, can be brutal even when at speed, the lack of exhaust I have to breath is another big factor for me.
I ride with music going, typically, but not when filtering. If someone says something I will typically educate them and just tell them something simple like "it's legal, it's safer for riders, and it reduces traffic. Look it up."
At first I noticed people giving me weird looks and some getting irritated, but after several months of the new law people started to calm down a bit. Yep, there's those a-holes that are gonna get mad about every little thing but I think most people, once they understand it AND see it being done responsibly and respectfully are OK with it.
Big key is to be responsible and respectful, don't squeeze where you barely fit, don't yell at people, and if traffic starts moving before you get to the front then merge back into traffic (actually part of the rule in Arizona).

In Australia we can lane filter after we have pasted our provisional license (open class license). After that you can lane filter when traffic is stopped or only progressing at a certain speed. I don't remember what the actual speed is but let's say under 20mph after which you have to pick a lane and sit with traffic. Side note. While on previsionary license you can only ride a bike under 660cc and at a certain power to wight ratio. So the CBR650R is learner approved the CBR600RR isn't for example. Designed to ease the inner squid into responsible riding. Love your work guys been watching for years riding for a bit over a month. The inner squid is real but I've tamed it
