I swear looking out for other bikers is the majority of what life savers are for, bikes teleport in!! As for filtering, it is the god mode of riding, rolling past long queues of stopped traffic. But I find if I'm not trying to get anywhere in a hurry, which is mostly the case if I'm on the bike, then I'm happy to join a small queue. Always being at the front, always overtaking everything in sight, that's a lot of work man. I'm usually out there to enjoy the ride!
Passed my test in October. Been riding my own bike since November. Not much as I’d like with the cold weather but finally had my proper filtering session yesterday and it honestly is an amazing feeling. I’d say about 2-3 miles of dual carriageway was going 5mph at most mostly stationary. Zipping through that traffic is honestly like a God mode. But I did have a few people move closer to the white line to prevent me getting past, still did get past but still. If you’re comfortable do it. But like this video explains. Be extra careful and don’t get too cocky or too comfortable. Anything can happen. Be safe :)
Had to filter a lot on the M8 this morning between Glasgow and Edinburgh, your advice is spot on and, I need to remember Rule 160 as you still get people who get pissed that you are filtering past them! Keep up the great channel! 🏍
Thank you for the video. I am back on a bike after too many years, from riding in Norfolk in the 70's to the busy South Wales valleys has been an experience! This video has given me more confidence with filtering, something I am still quite nervous about. Thanks again.
Great video, thanks. I passed my Mod 2 in July and initially didn't want to filter as I wasn't confident enough. I went out with a couple of friends who have a lot more experience than me and watched what they did, and now I find myself actually enjoying filtering. I approach the filtering in pretty much the way you describe in this video and if the traffic is moving at anything more than 20mph on any road I usually don't bother. You're dead right though, the only way you get more confidence with filtering is to filter!
I use many modes of transport, including a motorbike. I always think of filtering as moving between lanes of traffic going in the same direction. Once you move to the opposite side of the road, that's an overtake and I don't think incoming traffic is obliged to give you priority or assume you're going to force them across. I've seen lots of videos of people getting irate when riding on the wrong side of the road because they think they're filtering. They're not; the oncoming traffic is moving faster and they're overtaking stationary vehicles in their lane. The overtaking rules apply there and not filtering. I'm enjoying your videos btw and I find your voice quite relaxing to listen to
👏👏👏. Your vids just keep getting better and better mate. You have taken me from cbt to full licence . Now my journey has begun you are helping me develop as a safe happy rider. Cheers bro 👍
Filtering on a dual carriageway I got caught up by a pair of big bikes, maybe Harleys, I let them pass me when I could and then followed them. Them being a bit noisier everyone just moved apart, made it so much easier.
Great video. Best bit of advice I can give is of you don't feel confident don't do it. I passed my full licence about 5 months ago and I'm just not getting happy with my filtering. I started off with red lights, and small streets where the main speed is in the 5-10mph range and slowly worked up to being a more confident rider at higher speeds. And thank-you for pointing out the bell ends that filter at 50mph. Give us a bad name for sure and it's just not necessary
It never ceases to amaze me that car /van drivers don’t know what the broken white line down the middle of the road. It’s like drivers are ignorant of the rules of the road. If it’s a straight road and the opposite lane is clear, and it’s safe to do so (so not in the middle of town, near a school etc etc) then there is nothing wrong for one car to safely over take the car infront as long as it’s done in a safe manner (I.e mirror signal manoeuvre and then same again to pull back into the lane).
Awesome ! I am planning a return to riding after 20+ years and of all the vids I’ve watched this the most insightful and helpful I’ve seen. Although I have a full licence I have decided to take a CBT to get some up to date experience but I think vids like this should supplement any training, your experience is invaluable. Thank you.
To be honest, I think an advanced riding course would be more suitable for you. The CBT is the absolute basics of riding which, if you were already a rider, you won't have forgotten
1:40 - This should be publicised. When I used to ride the number of times car drivers deliberately blocked me off. Could have been 'He's getting somewhere while I'm stuck here in traffic, I'll soon see to that'. But at least some of the time it was because they thought filtering is illegal and they are 'doing their bit'. Though I had drivers who would move over to let me through. He mentions this at 13:47. 5:32 - Exactly what I used to do. That way I had more of a chance to react if anything happened. 13:17 - I always used to wear a hi-vis vest and a white helmet. As he says, it gives you more chance to be seen. Overall this video should be required viewing for any rider thinking of filtering.
I love filtering now. I am happy to go during rush hour just for the joy of passing queued cars. It feels like your going a million miles an hour yet only 10mph more than the cars
Thank you so much for your explanation and tips they were very helpful even though I have a full car licences. I failed my first theory test and theirs some tips which will help me on the next test. 🙏👍🏿. PS an old mod trying to rekindle his youth.
Thanks for doing this. V useful as I was not taught it for Mod 2 which I passed in May. When filtering between two opposing lanes we should look out for other motorcycles filtering coming towards us. Have been trying to 'push' myself to filter and always good to have a gap in mind to nip in to. Overtaking also not taught - perhaps a vlog on that, or have I missed it?
i have watched all your videos and i have to say thank you i have learnt allot i am going in for my CTB on the 9th of nov never been on a bike or drove a car time to have some fun at 46 years old lol
Appreciate that mate. Have fun on your CBT. It's a great course and you'll learn so much just from one day. If there's anything you're stuck in or have any questions about, feel free to get in touch. 🤜🤛
Some nice points 👍. I, being a rider of bikes and driver of cars would like to point out 1 or 2 items. On a single carriage way ( back road, town, 1 Lane going 1 way and 1 going the opposite) that isn't filtering, that's overtaking. Filtering is threading between traffic moving in the same direction. The lane hoppers your talking about are little different from us bikers filtering (trying to gain any little advantage). I personally think filtering is good. The police wi tell you that filtering is legal as long as you don't have to speed to do it. Not going higher than to 5-10 mph faster than the traffic your filtering past is safer for us the rider. How many bikers use indicators when filtering? Lastly filtering is legal but other road users do NOT have to leave you space. It is not a legal requirement for them to do so. The law is on the bikers side if other road users "close the door " on you. Filtering (passing) at chevrons is fine as long as it has a broken white lines. It is illegal for all road users to cross a solid white line. 1 little tip. The faster you filtering the less likely other road users will spot you. Your risk, not their fault. Happy safe riding.
One of the funniest things I’ve seen involved filtering. I was travelling between two lines of traffic on a one way street. Car on the outside Lane sees me coming and moves left (traffic still stationary). It was a blatant act on the drivers part. The amusing part is that a Police bike was following me! He promptly dismounted and “had a word” with the driver, who promptly returned to his lane when the traffic moved forward. I howled I’ll be honest.
Some very good advice. The bus lanes, are confusing, MAG are trying to get full access, apparently in Scotland its quite low compared to England. But keeping bikers safe is very important. When i am in four wheels i trying to give room for filtering. I do think motorways need a motorcycle lane for safety.
I'm glad your foot is a lot better now. Thanks again for a very informative vlog. Down here in the East Midlands I've come across a lot of cars that when they see you trying to filter in stationary traffic, they will deliberately move to block you from getting past. It is so annoying at times. I've watched other people on bikes deliberately smash their wing mirrors off if they do it to them lol 😆 hopefully they'll learn in future not to do that again. Just out of interest, does it stipulate that you should stay behind the first car at traffic lights? When I'm out with my partner he goes to the front, even if it means he's over the line a bit. He's probably doing it so he's not stuck behind anything though.
It's something the highway code states. Rule 191 I think, but every rider has their own way of filtering. I've also seen a few wing mirrors go flying 😂.
Cheers man .Sure. I've actually got some Mod 1 videos coming up soon, which includes the U turn. It would be on my 650 but it's exactly the same on most bikes. 🤜🤛
Cheers, David. How are you enjoying riding so far? Empty car parks or similar are great for things like practicing throttle control. What I used to do was to have the bike running but in neutral, and just practice slowly turning the throttle. Try and get to so many revs and hold it for a few seconds then slowly ease it back off. Do this to 1000 rpm then 2000 and so on up to about 4k rpm. Then do the exact same thing but in first gear, just creep along holding it about 1000 rpm. You'll quickly build up muscle memory. It's also worth checking how much free play there is when turning the throttle. There should be around 2-3 mm of free play before the throttle engages. If there's too much free play it might make it harder for throttle control and may need adjusted. 🤜🤛
@@MotoEcosse cheers man, I will definitely give this a go. I think I've been using the wrist too much. Quite jerky. Absolutely loving riding and can't wait to get out there! Dont have a bike at the moment so only practice I get is my lessons. However, I have been practicing with a rolling pin from the kitchen 😂 what advice could you give on techniques when rolling the throttle ?
Slow and steady is definitely the best way to use the throttle. Make sure your grip is loose. The tighter you grip the harder it will be to make smooth motions. Practicing at home is a great idea if you can. Especially getting used to loosely gripping it.
Bought myself a suzuki 750 srad (first bike) filter with it no problem, you have to be confident to filter I think and be able to adapt and react fast.
The only time filtering annoys me is when at some lights or a junction and they stop on the side I'm indicating so now one of us has to go faster then the other
Great video thanks!, Newbie rider here. If I ride my bike to work there is a single carriageway (two lanes) but a solid white line heading to some traffic lights that go onto a roundabout, invariably the traffic is stationary on my side during the morning rush hour, My question is can I cross that white line if all the cars are stationary/moving very slow on my side and there is nothing coming the other way?.
@@MotoEcosse Thanks for the reply and info mate, damn it's like half mile of stationary traffic, with practically nothing on the other side of the line. 😒.
Great video and really helpful. I watched your video the other day on cornering which was great as I'm learning to ride. I passed my CBT just over a month ago and now have a CBF 125 2009 model which I love. I'm looking to take my full licence next year. I'm struggling with the speed side at the moment as having that confidence to hit 50mph and I'm not sure why? Any advice on this?
Cheers, David. Speed is something that comes with time as you build confidence. Getting 50mph out of a 125 always feels like you need to try and max it out to get it there. I'd spend a lot of your riding time, if you can, on dual carriageways. You don't have to try and match the speed of other traffic, but instead get used to constantly traveling at say 40mph. Then 45 and son. If you feel uncomfortable at the higher speed drop back down. Time and experience and of course, doing it safely. What kind of speeds do you feels comfortable at just now?
@@MotoEcosse at the moment 40 to 43 seems to be a limit then I back.off especially if I'm on a 40 road that has a bend. I'm seem to focus on the bend so much that my speed drops to 30 or 35 which I was told in my CBT can be dangerous.
Just what I was looking for. I thought I read somewhere not to filter past the lead car. Is there a reason for this, and any exceptions to this rule? Many thanks
Well the main reason is because if you did go infront of the lead car there's a good chance you end up with your bike over the white line which is a big no no. If there is a big enough gap then it's the riders call. This is only a suggestion in the highway code and not an official rule but it's always best to be courteous while out in the road. 🤜🤛
@@MotoEcosse Yea thanks. I just built up the confidence to do some filtering and I did filter past the lead car. I assumed that I would beat them on acceleration so therefore have clean air ahead which would make me feel more safe and comfortable. I'm glad you made this video because I was unaware I was in the wrong. My instructor won't teach filtering and says it won't be expected on my test. That's on December 6th 🤞
@@booshallmighty Yeah a lot of schools don't teach it for some reason. I personally think they should. It doesn't have to be in depth but even just the basics. The one thing I will say is only start filtering when you're absolutely confident on the bike, then build from there. There's no rush to start filtering either. All the best for the 6th mate. 🤜🤛
@@MotoEcosse Thanks mate, I did ask my instructor on my first day and he said the they (can't remember who), don't like filtering taught to anyone without a licence and I would have to do advanced training when I passed my test. He said filtering will not be taught or expected on my test. I don't think this is right, it's a bit like not being taught on motorways but you can just crack on when you get your licence.
It depends on the school. Some schools will teach it and if the opportunity is there on the mod 2 then yes, while others stay away from it. Not all examiners will follow on a motorbike so this pretty much eliminates filtering on test day. We were taught how to filter safely but were told it wouldn't be needed on test day.
Mahilig din ako mag solo ride minsan idol. Positive mind. Positive vibes. Positive life. 🤜🤛 Appreciated with your effort in making video! 🤜🤛 Wish to see your process of being an elite youtube 🤜🤛A53
Bike comes up to junction on the right with car in front of him. Car flashes us to come out from the junction because of the density of the traffic and stops to allow us to turn right. Bike undertakes the car on the left (two way traffic)and we cut out in front of the car and bike is this classified as filtering as the bike nearly came into us from the kerb edge near side.. This to me shouldn't be allowed and probably causes many accidents across the country. Especially cyclists. This is traffic stopped for courteous reason. Should he have stayed behind the car that was being courteous until he had turned right.
I stopped at the 25th minute. Why make a video about doing something and NOT show what it is you are talking about? Have clips of you in different situations. "This is when you should/can." or can't/shouldn't. The diagrams are fine, but I want to see what it looks like when I'm out there.
You'd be surprised how many riders aren't actually taught to filter while learning to ride, it's only once they've passed their test the slowly figure it out for themselves, it's part of the learning process when you've passed your test. Getting comfortable and confident on the bike is going to help a lot more than watching someone filter, but if you feel you need to actually see some filtering then there are lots more videos out there for you. 👍
Now I see a different, and way better response. Before it was just "if you want to see it go do it". I'm just starting out and wanted to know when I should/shouldn't, and what kind of things to watch out for.
@@jamesjellema7072 mmm that's odd. RUclips being RUclips I guess. When it comes to should/shouldn't you need to really think about the width of the gap, if you think you can easily get your bike through then go for it, if you're unsure then hold back. When you do first start filtering, go for gaps that are massive. This is mainly to get you used to passing through traffic. The more you do it, the more it becomes second nature. If there's ever any doubt when it comes to anything related to riding, don't do it until you know it's safe. There will always be another chance to filter, overtake or whatever you plan to do.
I like your videos but you use far too many words. If you were more succinct, your videos would have much more impact and be more watchable. You could have said this video in about 6 or 7 minutes. Otherwise great stuff.

16:22 I avoid filtering on traffic light zig zags. There’s too great a chance of unseen pedestrians crossing through the traffic.
Can you cross a white line (no crossing over, over taking) if you are filtering a stand still traffic or
Yes, as long as the line isn't solid or if you will impede oncoming traffic.
Aw shit I'm just along the road from you in Alloa lol good vid man
Thank you 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Question, I'm I'm filtering through traffic and someone Opens there door and I hit it who is a fault? But The the goes from split to bold??..

I don't think this is right, it's a bit like not being taught on motorways but you can just crack on when you get your licence.
is filtering a requirement for mod 2? and do you have to filter?
It depends on the school. Some schools will teach it and if the opportunity is there on the mod 2 then yes, while others stay away from it. Not all examiners will follow on a motorbike so this pretty much eliminates filtering on test day. We were taught how to filter safely but were told it wouldn't be needed on test day.
Yass Stirling!

Filtered all the time when on sports bikes👍now on a cruiser, don't bother as much👍just sit there reving like a madman🤣
🤣🤣
Are you allowed to filter at the kerbside of vehicles?
I wouldn't advise it, no.
I was always told 20mph or below is filtering above this it is an overtake but do not over take the lead vehicle on zig zag crossings
Yep or traffic lights and crossings. 🤜🤛
Can you filter with a quadbike because wont the gaps sometimes be too small to fit through
I personally wouldn't.
I wouldn't class that as filtering, no. Filtering is when you move through slow or stationary traffic but only when it's safe to do so.
U guys shod definitely filter I won’t u out the way and gone u know
13m in and not a filter in sight....dude, be succinct pls, we are all short on time
You wouldn't complain if it was 13 minutes in a class room that might just save your life one day!
Just go do it eh? Great advice, thanks!
@@jamesjellema7072 that's not what I said but you do whatever you think is best for you.
