@@itaz6276Almost every farm is worth more than that. But it's not cash in the bank of the farmer. It's in machinery, buildings, the land. 500 acres sounds a lot but it's about the smallest a farm can be to make even 50 or 60 grand profit. Supermarkets pay a pittance and foreign imports of food that can be grown here means british farmers get even less. To pay the bill while still making literally any money ( most of which goes back into the farm ) means most farmers will have to sell productive food producing farm land that will then be taken out of food production, because no one will be able to make money on it.
Just the equipment and fertiliser and fuel costs alone take over a million to pay for. Then the land ,then the house, then any livestock , buildings ....it all adds up to far more than 3 million in value.
They literally cannot afford to pay that tax bill and still have a viable business, not even over 10 years of paying.

There is a piece of farm land opposite where I live, I got a copy of the deeds as it is leased and the lease is up next year and I was looking to get into small scale farming, that land in 2005 was already valued at £1M, way before the likes of Dyson and his ilk started buying up land as a tax dodge.

The people who the Government should be going after…are themselves and their buddies….this is just pocket change compared to the hidden assets out there thanks to clever tax avoidance, and they know that.

Farmers play a crucial role in keeping this country on track, and they deserve recognition and support for the work they do. Regardless of their financial standing, we should be rewarding farmers for their contributions towards making the UK more self-sufficient and ensuring a steady supply of locally-grown food. Farming is physically demanding and requires immense dedication, regardless of weather or season. Most of us would find it hard to do what they do every day, and many would agree that a farmer’s wealth shouldn't matter - it’s about supporting the people who provide for us.
Additionally, for those who acquire farmland with no intention of using it for agriculture, the government could introduce policies to ensure land remains for farming and doesn't become a vehicle for tax avoidance. We need solutions that keep farmers motivated and committed, ensuring the high-quality British products we value are available in stores. Let’s support our farmers so that protests and disruptions don’t become a necessity - it's in everyone's best interest to see them thrive..... the exception is the Labour Party!

As someone who is a tax specialist for over 2 decades I can categorically say ur simplistic analysis is far from the truth
That fact of that matter is all the tax reliefs in this country mean the low income average Jo pays a high effective tax rate then the rich in this country who defer to other forms of income such as dividends, capital gains etc etc
This is also the reason why clarkson was boasting a few years ago about how he bought farm land to avoid inheritance tax
Let’s be honest - the inheritance tax change means a millionaire farmer will only pay 20% tax on his estate over 1.5million (so there’s an exemption 1.5million)
Average Jo will pay 40% tax on an estate over 500k!!!

Kevin Maguire 16:25 the loaded people that have been buying land are not farmers, yes prices have skyrocketed but now the small family farm is being valued at much much higher prices yet the small farmer has no where near the income to pay this extortionate inheritance tax on vastly over valued land and assets

Shut up Kevin. Protect the farmers who produce our food. IHT is fabulously unfair. Just look at land prices & house prices.

Always remember, a tax is when the government thinks it can spend your money better than you can yourself!
What is the government going to do with that money that beats eating?

Nobody mentions farms also get naturally degraded by having more than 1 child, devorce, suicide? there’s a lot of other factors that are shutting farms down.

Every farmer complaining about inheritance tax should declare what his farm is worth publicly and how much millions he’s trying to save by avoiding tax
Also show what the tax would be if he was taxed like everyone else is on inheritance tax without the 50% relief and higher exemption thresholds on farms

@ why They are business like others If they hand over to the next generation and live 7 years they have nothing to pay Iv seen to many older farmers holding the business back frustrating their children who work with little or no pay with no input into the business They inherit the farm in their 50’ and have lost their mojo The most successful farmers I know have taken over the farm in their 20’s sometimes due to unfortunate circumstances but drive the business forward !!!!
