Hey, Mel. Texted my 18 year old at university this video and he actually replied, ‘Good video’! Since he is no longer home, I try to share anything that might spark a conversation in order to keep our connection. It is a bit of a hit or miss. So thank you and Oakley, for letting moms know how a young man’s mind ticks. Your insight has been very helpful!!
I'm only 20 minutes in but just had to stop and say what a joy it is to listen to Oakley and to the two of you interacting. I've followed you for a few years now Mel, and it's crazy how much he's grown. He has the best energy about him, a beautiful smile and very kind eyes. But more than that, he has a beautiful deep heart. And a great sense of humor :) You sure raised him well, and your connection and the respect he has for you is evidence of that. I grew up with an extremely emotionally avoidant father, and it's affected the way I see men. I'm 32 now, but struggle to trust that the deep, enriching relationship I crave for is possible since anyone who's ever heard that has told me to let it go, men aren't good communicators, do it with your girlfiends, etc... Oakley is proof that there are men out there who've been raised to know who they are, what they want, how to connect effectively, how to be kind, empathetic, deep and loving and how to listen and engage. It may seem trivial to some who had it, but this is very moving to me. I love how articulate he is and how much you respect his perspectives and thoughts. You've raised a real one Mel. Good for you. You are an inspiration as it's evident that you don't just talk the talk, you also walk the walk, and that's what makes me trust you. Thank you for being so wonderful and sharing your beautiful family with the world. Some of us really need it.
I'm here to second that! Oakster, I heard about your journey back from the Power of You days. Cheers to you, and the whole Robbins family. Thank-you for your honesty and openness! Your courage encourages and inspires. Please keep on being you! =0)
@@bethmiller6827 Thanks Beth. I've been in therapy for 17 years, and I'm also a therapist myself, so it's not the anger as much as the complex trauma I'm dealing with which is hard. But I agree, therapy is great :) And seeing healthy parent children relationships is extremely healing. Gives me a lot of hope.
As a mom of a "first year," this was so helpful. Thank you both! Oakley is a very wise young man. Mel & Chris.... you have raised him well. Congratulations
What a brilliant idea to make this with your son. A wonderful young man, and so great for other young people to hear his wise answers from his own, honest experiences. Lovely to see the relationship of mutual respect that you both have together too.
This is my absolute favorite Mel robbins episode ever! I have a 16yo son (my youngest of my three boys, so you’d think I’d know what I’m doing by now… but) and he’s currently just goin through it. I am trying to figure out a way to get him to listen to this episode with me. He reminds me a lot of your son- awesome and smart and funny as all get out. Keep your fingers crossed he’ll listen with me and tell me how he likes to be communicated with. 🙏🏼
As a 15 years old person ,Mel Robbins 's videos make me love psycology more and understanding people better Thanks a billion Mel Robbins and this video was amazing ❤
Oakley is absolutely amazing and probably the most intelligent 18 year old adult man I've ever listened to! He has an amazing future ahead of him and I'm absolutely sure it is because of the great upbringing Mel and Chris provided him with!!
Man, your son is on his way to being an excellent communicator. I’d love to give you all the credit for it, Mel, and I’m sure you and your husband are beyond proud of all of your children. But this interview? I’m 62… Don’t even have children of my own and yet I listened all the way through because I am always working on communicating clearly, concisely, and connecting. Thank you so much for featuring him! I hope his head swells with pride when he reads all these comments :-)
Oakley you have no idea how much you've helped me today, this video is a sign from God believe me. Robbin you have raised an amazing honest boy good job. I have a son around your age and I continue to ask when he's quite what's wrong what's wrong he hates that now I get it. Sending you love and happiness.🙂🤗
14:34 This is a great point that many people don't realize...that when others are trying to hurt us, they're acting from a place of hurt. If even 10% of us understood this and had empathy, the world would be so much kinder. He's very mature to understand this. It's not to say that we allow the hurt to happen (because we all need boundaries) but it's good wisdom for understanding the person trying to hurt us is in a lot of pain without probably knowing it. Mindfulness has helped me over the years to get a grasp on this, but I still absorb negativity at times. I'm currently going through a nice mindfulness meditation book called 30 Days to Reduce Anxiety by Harper Daniels which has been helpful, keeping me on track to be more mindful of my self and not take things personally. I was so impressed by this young man's maturity.
This was amazing! I have a 14 year old boy and I am a single mom. I miss my little boy so much but this helped SO much getting Oakley’s perspective. He is such a great kid. Thank you, cannot wait for the other episodes with him.
What a handsome, level-headed young man. I would like to have met him when I was 18. 😊 I enjoy your videos, Mel. Oak is great! I watch a lot of true crime & documentaries. I recently caught up with all the Ruby Franke abuse of her children, videoed online! Instead of making Oakley uncomfortable, you both chatted comfortably. Smiling, laughing, offering compliments. Contrast that with Ruby, absolutely no respect for her children or their basic rights. She used her religion to backup her irratic, cruel punishments. Humiliating them publicly. So grateful you show an opposite direction!! We need more laws to protect children from monsters like Ruby. Thank you & Oak!!
Omg!! Every question is my son!! Thank you, thank you!! I will watch it again with him for him to see he’s not the only one going through this, and all the different ways to solve these issues. And your son so mature, down to earth…I’d say your JOB is done Mel!! Be proud!! 💁♀️ going back to finish watching
What an incredible son you have! He WILL succeed in life. Maybe I'll ask my daughter's HS counselor if they could start a mentorship program. You've done a fantastic job, momma!
I will be sharing this episode with my daughter, who just entered middle school and has already experienced so much hurt in her friend relationships. THANK YOU MEL AND OAKLEY
You must be so proud of him! He is so mature and kind and thoughtful. It is obvious he took this very seriously and really gave a lot of thought into each answer. This young man is going places!
I love Oakland and I love his eye contact throught conversing throughout the whole episode. He comes across genuine and authentic. Dad and mom's son 👏🎉❤🎉❤
What an amazing wise boy with an amazing self awareness, and how lucky he is to be born in such an amazing family and mom who gave him the foundations, ground and safe place to be himself and to develope according to his true self. I wish I had this knowledge when my son was that age.
Mel, Mel, Mel - I love you even more than I ever thought I could. To meet your son and hear his point of view is remarkable. What a beautiful contribution to society Oakley brings to society. I have faith again.
Holy smokes Oakley! You are one insightful, wise, clever and adorable dude. I can’t wait to hear about where the road to success leads you via your mom’s incredible podcast.
To anyone who has been a victim of bullying / hate / violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred, I've wasted half my life feeling it. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: 'maybe if I wasn't different, if I was 'normal' I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something to pray upon. I've always had kinda androgynous look, which was a fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games :)Remember; There's never anything wrong with you.
Oh, Mel!!! Love this so much! Probably my top 5 favorite episode from your show, so far! What an amazing human being your son is!!! Oakley, thank you! Enjoy your senior year and good luck in your life, always! You rock!!!
Mel and Oakley I LOVE this episode!! Thank you for being open and being honest about real situations. I agree with so many of the comments. I also had a girl then a boy( Dyslexia diagnosed in 2nd grade). We live 45 minutes outside of Boston. This young man is so self-aware that it's no wonder he was asked to be a mentor for the first yearers.😄 Oakley is proof that men don't have to be closed up to be masculine. He's only going to age like a fine wine. What a amazing soul. Thank you for helping Mom out with her work stuff.
Love this ❤ Oakley seems like such an amazing, mature young man. Great job Mel and Mr. Mel. You guys raised a great young man. Thanks for your insight Oakley.
Thanks Mel Robbins, l truly loved this conversation. I have a 19 years old son and I felt so identified with you guys. I am a big fan of you Mel and I actually listen to your podcast in a daily basis ❤. Cheers from Ecuador 😊

This video is amazing. I really needed to hear this. I have 16-year-old twins (boy and girl), and often, I am not sure how I can support them. Thank-you ❤❤
The shark tank comment! Hahahaha. Omg dying over here. Seriously though, Mel what an amazing young man you have raised. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Oakley! Hope your senior year is a blast!
Oakley, if you ever want to explore west coast Vancouver Island, BC you’ve got a friend/host/local guide. I think we’d be good friends! I’m out of university now and your advice was exactly what I needed in highschool/first year university but it also rang true at this point in life.
Wow Thank you!! This was extremely helpful. Feel better knowing that if my 19 yr old son doesn’t speak to me for a few days it’s ok! and also with guiding youngest who is 1st year and is having challenges around making friends . Thank you both can’t wait for another episode
This is an amazing video (Podcast), Mel. I have gone through the "raising" of Oakley with you (since he was 13) and watched all the videos you have shared with him being a part. What an amazing job you and Chris have done with Oakley. I have two grandsons the age of your daughters and a granddaughter who is also a Senior. My daughter is your age and she also follows you. I look forward to seeing Oakley in the future and a Part 2. podcast. The best to you and Chris. xo 🌻
Oakley you are such an inspiration! I am definitely stealing the concept of being here and now. I'm also a senior and I have a question: how do you deal with the stress before your final exams and the pressure to achieve your dreams?
WOW!!!!! Just started listening. Yes! I needed this information!!!!! I am at the young age of 59 soon. My so is age 23. You both definately provided the insight I have been searching for.
I loved this episode! I mean I love EVERY SINGLE ONE but I love the interaction between you and your son! I found the part about dyslexia very fascinating. My dear friend Kelly is the founder of Skool•ed and this is her specialty! I’m telling her to take a listen!
Damn it Mel, just when I think I can't love you more, you drop this episode. I am crying, I am smiling but most of all I am feeling so grateful for the gifts your family continues to share with us. I have a teenage son & daughter and this was incredible. This....will take home in my soul. Oakley, thank you for not only helping us parents but inspiring teens to keep going. No one is alone. So much love for your family Mel, thank you❤
Lol all my life I stuttered a bit, now a days I have to tell you in order for you to notice, but I always point it out, and told ppl I didn’t care I wasn’t ashamed. That stopped anyone from making fun of me. Plus I have a morbid sense of humor
What a great young man. So articulate and engaging. The world will be a better place with him in it.
I think this is the most mature 18 year old I have ever heard😅🫶🏻 such great advice Oakley! Thank u Mel for setting a great example of parenting❤️
It can be done. Good parenting

A few therapy sessions could help you forgive your father and understand why you have trouble with relationships.
Please, try.
@@bethmiller6827 Thanks Beth. I've been in therapy for 17 years, and I'm also a therapist myself, so it's not the anger as much as the complex trauma I'm dealing with which is hard. But I agree, therapy is great :)
