  • When her father took his own live, Shanna slipped into a dark place. Struggling to find her way back, she played video games all day, ‘not dealing with the situation’.
But gaming slowly turned things around when she started sharing her gaming sessions with others. Her fan base kept growing; today she is one of the most trending and successful shoutcasters of the Netherlands.
Some people - of a certain generation - might think that gaming is an antisocial event, is T O T A L L Y wrong. For Shannanina gaming was her way out of her depression at the age of 19, in the aftermath of her father’s suicide. She spent two months in bed gaming, ordering in pizza and basically just ‘being’. She was following a streamer [red. someone who has a webcam operating on him/her while gaming] and thought: ‘I can do that’. At first it gave her a reason to wear something else than pyjama’s and put on some make-up. For some time she was only the lonely on the webcam, but one day she spotted her first follower. And then six and then …. the hundred thousands she has now. Her singing during gaming became one of her unique characteristics, at the point where followers now have requests for certain songs. And donate money for her performance as a gamer/singer. On Twitch - a gaming platform - she is hot. She is the hottest female streamer in the Netherlands.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Quite mind blowing seeing a person who is still recovering from something that has utterly deprived their will to live and has driven them into a constant downwards spiral with only their personal demons to talk to; and seeing them recover to the point of having enough courage to talk infront of such a large audience.
This is the first time I've heard of you and seeing you struggle on stage against your own anxieties and presumptions really hits home.

I very much relate to this, after listening to her story here Shanna is even more of an inspiration to me than I think she know's.
To stand up on a stage in a room full of people and tell 'how it is' like this is huge, love this woman, she is amazing :)

Overall, this topic is very unique. As Twitch is getting more and more popular, I think societies need to know more about the ever changing landscape of this. Your personal story is awesome. I think this should be a topic explored more in TEDx talks for years to come. I am saying this from the perspective of a 2 timer on this stage and a curator of a TEDx event right now.

Great motivational talk for addicted gamers to continue ruining their lives and brain function based on the testimony of a person who´s experience is luckily exceptional and opposite to reality. Thinking gaming can change your life is like thinking winning the lottery will fix your economic problems.

@@xsan9an30 Dear Xsan9an, I´m not questioning the reality of her story at all, like I don´t question the fact that 0.10% of smokers suffer little to no damage to their lungs after years of smoking (which doesn't encourage me to pick the habit). My issue is that young people that see a title "How Gaming Changed My Life" could easily assume that it could happen to them and end up worse than where they started.
Most people fighting depression must first confront their inner demons and come to terms with their pain, face to face with themselves, not facing a tv screen (a clear evasion) while handling a joystick (I´m from the 80s), and finding support from solid friendships that have been forged by time, love and affinity and not by likes and cheering comments. Don´t get me wrong, I´m deeply happy gaming helped this girl get over her depression, but she´s probably a very very smart girl with a great spirit, way above average from what I could tell, and that is most probably what really made the difference.
In general terms, gaming is not a problem, just like drinking is not a problem if you have a couple drinks in good company once in a while, but it becomes a problem when you over do it and when you see this generation of young people increasingly becoming junkies of their screens you definitely have to be careful what message you send out. Exceptions are a very very small part of reality, not reality, so why would anyone give exceptions a big stage and not mention the vast reality that opposes it. Cheers.
