How I stopped gaming: 1) I made the decision- making the decision is the first step of every process 2) I looged off my social/gaming media (aka discord, skype, etc...)- The thing that always stopped me from quiting gaming was my friends asking my to play with them... however, from my experience I can tell you that real friend will remain your friends even when you're not playing, you'll recognize whos a real one and who isn't as you quit (talking about real life friends that know where they can reach you) 3) I found new hobbies- This one is SO important. For me it was joining a youth group and learning to play the guitar, for you it can be whatever you've always wanted to do (if you can't think of other hobbies search it up on google, google knows everything) 4) I met new people- Talk to people, make new friends, go out. We homeschool/unschool our kids, my oldest daughter plays video games for her school work she has her own yt channel and loves everything video games. She also reads, draws, helps with her younger siblings and plays outside everyday even though I dont force her to get off. When you have restrictions on things like TV or videogames kids cling to it because they get limited time with it and they want to play as much as possible because they only get some much time with it. My 11 yr old is proof that when you have no limits on screens, they arent so fanatical about it.
The big difference between TV and radio as compared to video games, is that the they are not interactive and are therefore less taxing on the brain's reward circuitry.
I would say I had an addiction. I am not entirely sure if it was, I always looked at it as an escape from my current reality to be poor in a former soviet republic. I did not have any particular issues but I regret investing so much time being involved with this industry. Time I could have spent learning a language for an example or simply going out walking outside. If you are not making money from gaming it is a waste of time if you are 18 or older. Now, I work in a different country and my reality is different so I no longer need the desire to play.
Honestly, it's a waste of time for people below 18... I remember I used to play video games non stop until I was 13 and decided to pick up easy programming. Now I only spend like 30 minutes - 1 hour on video games everyday. I used to doubt "Video games cause violence" but now that sentiment might prove to be true. Video games alone might not cause violence itself, but it can make an already violent person a lot more violent, and there has been some studies theorizing it causes ADHD, depression, etc. Of course it's not 100% a fact yet, but I can see in the near future it being one.
I'm 22 and I think I might be an addict but then again i might not be. I've gone through a stretch of continuous long sessions of gaming after I lost my job nearly month ago or longer. I wake up brush, eat than play games from dusk to dawn with hardly any breaks in between. I stay seated for hours at a time.
Well, i hope you've gotten yourself up out of your slump already, but just in case you haven't, here are a couple of ways you can help both control yourself and apply more focused effort towards getting a new job or just turning a fresh page in life all together; Set yourself a threshold task for tomorrow, something you want to get something done about, and try your best to already be putting your mind towards it as you wake up and have breakfast, don't allow yourself to start playing before you've at the very least done what you set out to do, but to make it something you can reinforce positively as quickly as possible without failing and 'falling in', make it relatively easy to achieve, something like just touching up your resumé and application letters, doing some searching and reading on how you can improve those, or putting in a timed hour of research into lines of study you might want to go to school for. Do this style for a week or so, get comfortable with putting off the start of your gaming-days and inserting more practical things as well, like some cleaning, a morning walk outside, simple workouts, things you can get done in an hour or two. This helps you establish more comfort with taking concerted and mindful control over your time, and as soon as you're comfortable enough you should start gaming on a timer - when you've done your morning business and you're set to play something, all happy that you at least got something done today before starting, just set a timer for one hour and decide before you start playing what you want to spend your break on; again try to stick with stuff that will help you get on with your life, or just gets you moving around away from your battlestation of choice, set your break activity to something you can do in 15-30 minutes, and as you return to playing more set yourself a new timer and a new activity for your next break, and try to keep varying what you aim to do. The more times you manage to succeed in replacing time you would have otherwise come to consider as 'wasted' or 'lost' on gaming 'too much' with time spent doing things you consider as paving your way to success, the better you'll get at it, and don't ever let anybody online or offline tell you that you can't have your breaks, you decide to create them, they exist solely for your benefit, and everyone else playing games be they friend or foe has to either learn to control just their own lives or just live with the frustration of being rejected from controlling yours! Again, i hope you got goin' with something on your own already since your comment is 4 months old by now, but if you didn't, I really hope you'll take the 15 minutes it takes to read and at least consider heeding my advice, and GL to ya' regardless of your choices :)
4 hours a day! That's nothing. I woke up, got on the video game, grabbed food and eat while playing and continued playing until I went to sleep. Games are designed to be addictive so they take money.
Most of the conversations about addiction and the negative sides of video games are always about World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and similar games. It’s very annoying that people don’t do talks about great games outside of these games that cause people to curl up in a dark room for 10+ hours and take their life away. There are endless more games to talk about that aren’t these nerdy PC games.
bottom line, is all games in general. it doesn't matter if is pacman or megaman or whatever game if is online or not is just hat if you are stuck playing for hours then you know is a problem and dealing with them. i used to play quake live for 4 hours a day before and some times i used to finish and them jump from an online game to another that was offline. it was very bad for a while i noticed i was tired during the day and wasn't peforming at my best with things. so i cut down those hours to 1 or 2 a day. it took a few days to get used to but it works. another thing is you should consider gaming as watching tv and being on the phone watching videos as the same thing because is all screen time. is good to minimized the total to at least 2 to 3 hours a day.
It’s annoying that people point out games that are addictive and target a large audience? Should they abandon their own experiences? Maybe you should make a Ted talk on the non nerdy Pc gamers huh?
What happen after i quit, i got married, got good stable job, able to take care of my ageing parent, going to the gym got ripped n buff, financially stable, honed my mechanical skills, etc.... go figure.

Games are extremely dangerous. They slowly grind a promising life into dust. Specific people are more vulnerable than others. Low self esteem, ADHD, no role models, enabling environments. A life with a lack of structure. Missing parents.
i think a lot of smart people get lost in games because its kind of a continuous puzzle and constant brain stimulation which not so many activities in the real world can offer. and for me gaming allows me to do things which are impossible in the real world or highly expensive/dangerous. i.e swordfighting, shooting, street racing, fantasy adventure, theres so much. these are things i want to experience and only games allow me that, the real world is a disappointment sometimes.
Lmao, there are so many activities irl that can stimulate your brain, math and science? You can do things like that irl, you just need to put some courage, time and effort. You enjoy gaming more because there is no consequences you receive from those virtual mistakes.
One of the major problems people run into when playing for extended amount of time is the reward. Video games provide short term reward, whereas accomplishing a goal in the real world takes a very long time depending on the goal you set up. People whom fall to addiction don't think about their future, they want to have something right here and now, they don't have patience and willpower to pursue their goals for decades, if it takes them that much.
> Video games provide short term reward, whereas accomplishing a goal in the real world takes a very long time depending on the goal you set up. they don't. It can actually be a healthy past time/activity, and give people a more satisfying and enriching experience than any other artistic medium could hope to achieve. That does of course, totally depend on the quality of the video game that one chooses to play. you would know this if you weren't so closed minded and gave some of them a chance.

Yes, yes it does. My life ended on December 25th 1999, the date I unwrapped my green game boy colour with Pokémon Blue. That was the worst present I have ever received and would spark a lifelong gaming addiction. The speaker in this talk touched on a very key point in his presentation, in that parents taking games away until the weekend or until school work is finished doesn’t benefit the kid in the slightest; this tactic actually has an adverse effect and makes the kid crave games more!!!! This “tactic” was employed on me as a kid and by middle school my brain was absolutely fried. I wish more than anything that I never had a single gaming console in my adolescence...had that have happened my dream of becoming a professional football player might have came into fruition but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.
"parents taking games away until the weekend or until school work is finished doesn’t benefit the kid in the slightest; this tactic actually has an adverse effect and makes the kid crave games more!!!!" Yeah, I agree with this. Locking stuff you like to play with away until you do a certain task is harmful in the long run. There has to be another solution.
Bias and trivial! If a kid plays for 4+ hours daily and you do not see a problem with that at all, then you might have a problem yourself. How do you expect the video game industry to act ‘responsibly’ by designing their video games to be less addictive when their only goal is to profit. And what is best way to profit from video games other than designing them to be addictive?!
not the games are the ones that ruin people's lives, but people themselves. It is your choice if you play a game for 1 or 2 hours, or if you do it for 8+ h a day. People like to blame others for their problems, but you are the one who is choosing in the end. It is just like the knife métaphore where you can use a knife to prepare a good meal or to murder someone. Is about your choice and how you use that tool, not about the tool.

On the other hand, I know several people that can't hold down a job, or have no motivation to get one, because of their gaming addiction. I know only one thing for people who hate gaming.the only thing they want,is their child to be something very good (DOCTOR,BUSINESSMAN,etc) but they dont think that gaming makes them happy, dont tell your child to not play but tell him to control it.
I’m married to a man who gets home from work and plays video games until morning and on his days off he’s on the game nearly 24 hours. 90 percent of that he’s on the mic talking. I only want an hour of time out of the week that’s it and he acts like that’s to much time to give or I gotta get on the game or sit with him on the game to get time. It’s sad and btw I do get on the game with him but we don’t talk because he’s always on the mic.
Using exception as an example shows what is the rule… most kids playing videogames all day are not being called to go to Korea. Most kids are using videogames as refuge from reality, so they dont have to deal with teenage life, which is a hard time in our lives. But we need to go through as we learn a lot in this period. They will have to go through life without social skills, wont have motivation to learn a instrument, read a book or learn a language. Meanwhile other kids might be out there riding bicycles, playing footy, building tree houses… as everything in life it need moderation. I would say they should allow video game as much time they do other things. Too much of anything is not a good sign.

7:55 and even if you become a professional gamer (which takes more factors than just gift),that success is short-lived, You are forced to retire at an earlier age or the game just dies and suddenly you are facing a crisis. Some pro gamers made it somehow after retirement with streaming, smart investment or had a job related to esports/video games..but this is not usually the case .
My Opinions: It depends. If you can control your gaming habits or set a time table. You should be good. Some can just do well in life despite gaming a lot. I dunno how they do it though. Most of the time, it’s the persons own fault for discovering the game they later become addicted to. I’m not afraid to admit it. For me. Learning when to quit in general has enabled me to control my gaming habits
Life isn't about opportunity costs, you're going to die sooner or later, if you like to play games, and you can support yourself, there is no reason not to play

i sometimes play 6 or more hours a day, and love video games. my stepdad calls me a video game addict, but the thing is i still hang out with my friends and get straight a`s. how do i get him to change his view on gaming?
24 -8 hours sleep = 16 - 6 hours for game = 10 - 4 hours for other things like traveling, waiting, eating, day dreaming etc, you are left with 6 hours for schooling. 6 hours is not enough for studying and doing home work even for middle school student. You do not have time to wake up and go to school let alone getting A’s. So you are lying. Period.
to the above guy, 24-6 hours for sleep because I can't get more than that without using drugs no matter what I do=18-6 hours for gaming=12-8 hours for travel, waiting, day dreaming, exploring=4 hours for school because at least in the US the standards for education can easily be met in this time in middle school, or high school if you find that sort of thing easy, this worked for me for years in late ms/most of hs.
I tried to get my husband to see this video but he got mad. He will play for over 8 hours a day when he does work and all hours off the day unless I pull him off. I'm sure in doing something gw wrong but I dont know how to make him happier than his games
Come up with something fun to do together. What game he plays has a huge impact on why he’s on it. Non video game players don’t understand how to get them to stop once they’ve started, but if you understand the game it’s not as hard because 99% are goal oriented. The key is slowly, really really slowly, to show them you can get just as much satisfaction from the real world as the game. Also talk about it in advanced and set a time, remind him gently beforehand with like a text because it’s easy to loose track of time. The important point is he doesn’t have to give up gaming, people just need to move to a healthy level for your relationship. Unfortunately most partners that don’t play don’t understand, don’t make any effort, and spend any equally unhealthy amount of time on things like social media while making the man feel bad for doing something that makes him feel accomplished. Find a middle ground
@@Invictus1293 it's only call of duty he plays. We used to go bowling everyweek but not anymore. I may be the problem but he will keep playing even when I'm angry he has played all night. Its 1am here and he has been playing since 7am yeaterday...
I used to be an extremely avid competitive player, in strategy, world of Warcraft, and FPS when I was in high school. I played wow through most of college and my early career and was successful but I wasn’t happy with life, the game was a competitive escape. Being introverted (people often mistake for social anxiety when it’s not) only made want to play more. The gym was my way out, I became an avid runner, I started lifting a little nothing huge, and I lost a lot of weight and gained energy back to go out. The whole time I enjoyed it because I listened to my favorite music or an ebook about something nerdy I liked (40k). Everyone is different but easing into physical fitness instills that same desire for accomplishments gaming gives, I’d recommend that just make sure you make concrete plans and capitalize on the mental game, David Goggins, Les Brown, Tony Robbins, and others are really good motivational speakers for improving in life
I’d find out with an MBTI what personality type you both are, that will tell you more about him and how his thought process works. Communication like with any relationship is where the change starts, he also needs to be willing to talk. If communication isn’t good, see a therapist to mediate
I think they are partly responsible for ruining a real life. I like to play video games because as in most games they are relatively easy to pick up, the learning curve is intense and within 30 hours you can be very good at something you initially sucked at in the beginning. Life, is not like that. Many skills in life require many months at the very least to master and some skills can take years. Case in point, if I wish to become a helicopter pilot I need to train for years and spend a lot of money. Whereas if i invest 100 hours into a helicopter simulator game, I’m now pretty good. For me, video games offer an instant reward and I can feel validated. Life, offers slow rewards and seeking validation requires far too much time and effort. It’s the reason I fail in life more. Video games have moulded gamers to seek immediate reward which unfortunately does not transfer to real life. Not to mention as well that video games often offer a unique view into our deepest imaginations. Where as life, real life, is boring in comparison. That said I’m still going to play video games even if I believe them to have a negative skew on my real life.
Tip to anyone who cant stop gaming (cant force himself to take break), find new hobby, srsly it will let u take breaks from gaming so u can do something else

Almost all of the current game developers take advantage of this addictive gaming behaviour. They intentionally take advantage of mentally weak and unaware people on purpose and yet get away with it. In my opinion, these shady business practises which are actively supporting the development of an addiction should be taken into responsibility by the government. Only stronger legal rulings can help prevent people from getting lost in their lives due to their excessive gaming behaviour/addiction.
Honestly. If you're looking to be in a relationship with a woman or to get married. Either cut down on video gaming or get rid of it. It's honestly one of the number 1 problems that ends a lot of marriages and relationships. Guy comes home from working a 9-12 hour shift. Ignores girlfriend / wife, gets on PS4. Plays for 6 hours every night / day or longer. Wonders why their relationship went down the toilet. I hear about it all of the time.

I guess but that logic it is also ok to sell heropin to kids. After all the can say no. USE YOUR BRAINS OR SHUT UP!
Never cried so hard in my life.Mirror story of mine.
He delivered his talk in a way that everyone can understand no matter you have a degree or not and it was amazing. And his English is really good too!
You're an addict.
GronTheMighty so glad I found this comment. Don't mind if I take your advice there :3
Go right ahead, your life, I bet, is worth livin' too :D
GronTheMight you should make a life hacker blog or wikihow or something
answer to the question is: yes. actually, any addiction can and will destroy people's lives.
not every time
Addiction can come with anything, shopping, drugs, and even gaming like in this. But it all matters on if you do a little at a time.
4 hours a day! That's nothing. I woke up, got on the video game, grabbed food and eat while playing and continued playing until I went to sleep.
Games are designed to be addictive so they take money.
thats rough. from morning to night. i can relate to a period in my life doing this. it makes your life fly away.
😂😂😂😂
true that
Most of the conversations about addiction and the negative sides of video games are always about World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and similar games.
Polytopia is the best game .
It’s annoying that people point out games that are addictive and target a large audience? Should they abandon their own experiences? Maybe you should make a Ted talk on the non nerdy Pc gamers huh?
What happen after i quit, i got married, got good stable job, able to take care of my ageing parent, going to the gym got ripped n buff, financially stable, honed my mechanical skills, etc.... go figure.
When did you quit?

The last paragraft hits me hard
Sometimes, in 'real life', other people, mess with you. Do you hear me? They mess with you, your goals, your business, etc. It's not all about individual effort and having a goal.
> People whom fall to addiction don't think about their future,
LOL You know jack all about addiciton.
@rabbitcreative Actually, what the OP said makes a lot of sense. Your opinion differs and that’s fine, but it doesn’t make you right with your view; just different.
I play 6 hours a day games like lol and cod modernwarfare and then 1 hours on anime and 2 hours on Netflix and then 1 hour on yt 6.5 gb data I use daily and 7 hours constant studies and now I cleared neet exam so everything is good if you are doing what you love in balance then its going to be a lovely life like my

Videos games are addictive, no one likes losing so when we start we are bad and we lose so we start grinding and the addiction starts from there.
they don't. It can actually be a healthy past time/activity, and give people a more satisfying and enriching experience than any other artistic medium could hope to achieve. That does of course, totally depend on the quality of the video game that one chooses to play. you would know this if you weren't so closed minded and gave some of them a chance.
ironically, i am playing league of legends while watching this video.
Jazzy Tan world of tanks
ironically, i found a beautiful girl while watching this video.
Jazzy tan do you really play league ??
Or arxidia
I used to play aram as a break.. until i get leona every day..
I think the question we should ask ourselves is that why is the society that we have created so damn boring that people rather play video games.
Sanzu River Society isn’t so boring its that science has allowed us to manipulate the world to our will so that we can create more fun things than in the world. With science we can improve anything like weapons, information networks, entertainment, and transportation you name it.
It ruined my grades made me irritating and etc so YES IT CAN RUIN LIVES

Its you , or its games’ fault?
Lord Tachanka Himself Damn son.
"parents taking games away until the weekend or until school work is finished doesn’t benefit the kid in the slightest; this tactic actually has an adverse effect and makes the kid crave games more!!!!"
Yeah, I agree with this.
Locking stuff you like to play with away until you do a certain task is harmful in the long run. There has to be another solution.
Good information. Succesfully🎉
Interesting talk. Thanks for sharing!
omg you got 3k subs
Yes yes yes....
It ruined me.
not the games are the ones that ruin people's lives, but people themselves.
I mean people can't take responsibility for their actions like they think games ruined their lives while in reality they played bcs they enjoyed playing in games but why people don't want admit that?

Has anyone ever lost their job or their spouse because they just wanted to listen to radio? Probably not... On the other hand, I know several people that can't hold down a job, or have no motivation to get one, because of their gaming addiction. Excessive gaming is also increasingly cited as the cause of divorces.
It’s sad and btw I do get on the game with him but we don’t talk because he’s always on the mic.
and hows that working out for you now?
I am now on vegan diet forever and i plan on quitting video games yes FOR THE BETTER AND WILL CONCENTRATE ON MY HEALTH AND BUSINESS FROM NOW ON :)
May you succeed
You are focusing on your health? Vegan diet? Thats not healthy
@@suiker1421 What are you talking about ? Of course a vegan diet is healthy. If you dont know what you're doing then sure its not. But meat has tons of negative effects on health.
What to take away from this is video games don't ruin your life. YOU ruin your life stop blaming it on other things and take responsibility.
Treat it the same way people have to treat everything they can control inter lives, treat gaming with moderation.
Answer me this question how long is to long I play 3-5 hours is that to much?
My Opinions:
It depends.
Screen time in apple’s setting helps a lot
The opportunity cost of video games is greater than this guy leads on.
Life isn't about opportunity costs, you're going to die sooner or later, if you like to play games, and you can support yourself, there is no reason not to play
I know that a lot of people here are being controlled by games and they need to quit yes i know that it does almost control your life but if your love for gaming is strong follow that passion and you might become a wealthy man/woman i dont mind for people who want to quit but I know that some people here have a talent to really, purely enjoy gaming
I would love to see a follow up after the lootbox bubble burst
Yeah I’m an addict, I play from 1pm to about 4am. Help
thats about right. you are and is great you recognize it now you know that you are unhappy about something, where to look at.
If you are planning your days around gaming instead of planning gaming around your days, then that's without a doubt, an addiction.

Knut Ennio Pelagalli start make money out of it. Your dad will be super proud!
lol same here. My mom is so proud! Then again, I haven't played video games in two days. I don't game a lot. I spend all my time on RUclips lol
Some Guy exactly
Does video games ruin your life, short awnser no. Does addiction ruin life, short awenser yes

I been playing video games for like 30 years now , i play video games because i don't believe in relationships anymore and when i am playing i don't have to think about being alone, nobody wants a relationship with a poor gamer, women want money and i refuse to get money to get women

Advitiay Anand in my opinion. His answer is yes and no. Or it depends.
I'm the one who addicted to online game at the age of 18 while everyone else in that year was trying their best for college and I totally reget it. I waste 2 years of my life for nothing and I tried to attend for private college not the public college in VietNam. So the conclusion of this issue is" have a good parenting" to help you get out of the room .

Cody exactly what I’m going through. My boyfriend spends 6-7 hours per DAY after a 7-3 workday and on the weekends about 14 hours. From the time he gets up to getting ready to go to bed. I’ve had numerous talks explain it’s not healthy and he should find more balance but we have been together for 7 years and he isn’t trying to improve it will be the deal breaker. Love can only go so far. And you can see how he isn’t trying to better himself because gaming makes up the absolute core of his life

Couldn't it be more quiet?
I really think video games is an excuse to escape a traumatized life, and to not handle real life problems. I did this at the age of 11-14. Gaming is like a drug, and you need to get to the stage where you find your real life too interesting to have time to play video games.
Its a shiddy world full of shiddy people and video games are a great way to escape it.
