  • “A sculpture is always admired even if limbs are missing, whereas a handicapped human being arouses feelings of uncertainness and shame.”
Lorenza Böttner, named Ernst Lorenz Böttner at birth, was born in 1959 into a family of German origin in Punta Arenas (Chile).
After a crucial accident she had at a young age, both of Böttner’s arms had to be amputated below the shoulder and Böttner had to undertake a series of plastic surgeries. Böttner grew up being considered “disabled” but s/he resisted and refused prosthetic arms. S/he chose instead to transform her situation, learning to paint with her feet and mouth and developing an impassioned interest for different types of dance and performances. Bottner’s body became a political arena to question stereotypes and assumptions regarding beauty conventions, disability and gender.
