  • For more information visit risinger.blogspot.com. When you make the efficiency leap to exterior rigid foam there are some details you need to get right. One vital detail is proper waterproofing details. In this video I'll show you how to choose which house wrap to use with rigid exterior foam. I'll also put this assembly to the test to show how it drains! Matt Risinger - Risinger Homes Austin, TX

    These are plastic battens nails to studs. The siding nails to studs too through the foam & battens. I use the exact same setup for cement board siding as you see in this video. Best, Matt

      Hi Matt love the video and have a question. When the nails used for the battens and for the siding puncture the dupont cloth does that create a risk for leaking through the nails?

    @Bill Hegerich: my recommendation would be Tyvek Drainwrap. This is a permeable product that will allow some drying to the outside. More importantly it will allow drainage between the foam and your sheathing. I don't use or recommend felt paper for walls. Best. Matt

    Great question, not sure I showed that on my video. I've been meaning to put a longer blog post on this install on my blog with multiple pictures. I'll have that up next week for you. risinger.blogspot.com Briefly, the Drainwrap goes first, then 1" Dow foam, then the starter coarse of rain screen is a horizontal 2" strip of corrugated plastic with the air channels running vertically. That's wrapped with a "U" shaped piece of bug screen. This allow free exit of water & air flow. Matt R

    What part of the US are you? The NorthEast is probably the furthest ahead on trained contractors for this method. If you're not doing the work for a few years there is likely a guy in your town who is just now learning the methods and will be ready for you when it's time. Fine Homebuilding has been a great advocate of advancing this technique so lots more contractors will be jumping on board with these details. Ask around, or call your local HBA, they might know someone. Matt Risinger

    Matt - Curious if you've used the Tyvek Fluid Applied WRB system and what your thoughts are on it. I've used Prosoco and like it, but am looking a other systems instead of mixing Prosoco with a different product line. In particular, we've got a project that is going to have inset windows and doors that I'd rather have a fluid applied system for instead of layering a SAM product or sheet good with. Would greatly appreciate any thoughts you have. Thanks

    Nice video - helps alot. One question - get that the wrap under the foam has ridges that act as drain channel. The space between the top/outer layer of foam and the wood siding is not aerated and does not have its own layer of housewrap. So any water that gets in there could catch wood pockets and form mold. Odd that building codes don't catch that.

    • @williamwchuang
      @williamwchuang 7 месяцев назад

      For wood siding you need to put lapping to create a rain screen. Vinyl siding is considered water permeable so it can dry to the outside.

    Is there another house wrap under that for air barrier?
    Is the bottom of this house wrap not taped then?
    The only way I see this working is if there is a house wrap under it as well to allow it to breath while still sealing air.
    Also, I tried to find thus product is it only available in Canada? Is looks like an amazing product.

    Thanks Matt for the great video. If there is a tyvek drain layer behind the foam, how is the foam held against the wall? Don’t see how glue would work and I can’t see any fasteners. It’s not held by the battens because the wall in second scene doesn’t have any battens. Thanks for any info someone might have.

  • @Tman317
    @Tman317 11 лет назад

    Are those battens on the top of the rigid foam made out of wood? PVC? I assume they are nailed or screwed to the studs behind the foam to give something for the siding to nail to.
    I'm planning on using cement-board siding...should I perform the same setup on the walls as you have done here?

  • @TrailTrackers
    @TrailTrackers 5 лет назад +1

    @Matt Risinger : I saw a Tyvek vs ZipR commercial at the beginning of this video. So I watched the entire thing. Tyvek hired 2 crews with experience in each system and had a house done 1/2 & 1/2 using both systems. Then I went to the Tyvek site and watched another video they made where they sprayed water on the side of each installed product. But if you look closely they taped the bottom of the window on the ZipR install. Then they made a big deal of how it leaked. Very bad form for Tyvek. Naughty, naughty Tyvek.
    Have you seen this Matt? I know this is an old video but I'd like your opinion on what they did. I'd also like your opinion of each product and hopefully a solid recommendation for my new custom home I'm building in northern Utah.

      I’ve seen that video. It’s pretty one-sided. Both are good systems if installed correctly. I like Zip because of the terrific air sealing it provides. Use my Zip 2.0 method to install and you’ll build a very good house.

    Hey, Matt-- I was curious as to why the drain wrap was installed behind the rigid foam. Wouldn't it make more sense to install it in front of the foam?

    • @buildshow
      @buildshow  9 лет назад +1

      Both methods are acceptable, but my preference is to install foam on top of the drainwrap. I think it makes the window install more straightforward. If you install the foam first then you typically need to add a 1x buck to the outside of your windows. In this video I'm explaining my preferred method...

    • @Macmonkey1000
      @Macmonkey1000 9 лет назад +1

      Matt Risinger Air being able to move behind your insulation makes no sense at all in my opinion, kinda defeats the object of thermal insulation.

    • @HughStearns
      @HughStearns 9 лет назад

      It does seem that by creating redundancy in your rain screen that you have likely compromised the air seal. I worry about creating good air seal with house wrap rain screen as the same effect that allows water to move through prevents a good seal with the tape at the edges. Why were you not content with letting the foam board serve as your moisture barrier? Thanks for providing such a great resource.

  • @sportscarclinic

    Matt, how it the siding going to dry to the rear when it's back primed? Seems to defeat the idea behind creating an air gap in order to "allow the siding to dry", as you mention.

    • @andrewccolwell
      @andrewccolwell 7 лет назад

      sportscarclinic I think if the primer is acrylic, then it is permeable and since it is open on the back side (because of the rain screen) it can air out well.

    • @andrewccolwell
