    Some window manufacturers (Vinylguard in Canada) have a extended brick mould that allows for up to 2" insulation. This sets the actual thermal glass into the wall and not on the exterior of the wall. They also have optional jamb extensions for the inside allowing it to be flush with drywall.

    I just finished a job like this yesterday lol . I took off this guys siding and installed thorax and foam then replaced the siding ..so I was watching this utube video , not this one but another , and this guy says you don’t need to install tyvek or thorax lol , homeowners beware of contractors who claim you don’t need house wrap . It is almost more important than the siding itself

      I dont know much about wrapping. But do people put this stuff over top the older built homes ie bungalows that have those stucco? how would you layer it for old houses with stucco on the exterior? in example do people put paper down--> wooden frame---> styrfoam insulation---> plastic siding? I'm a total noob any ALL OF THIS STUFF. Looking to learn more before getting a friend to do this in the near future on my dads house. maybe in 2-3 years from now. I also live in Alberta Canada so it can go down to Negative -40 degree C which is -104 F

    • @Carpenters_Canvas
      @Carpenters_Canvas 3 года назад +2

      @@jeffd3147 if your going to go over stucco you need to put wooden cleats on the building kinda like studs on the side of the house that you can then mail the siding to , obviously there is a lot of other things you need to do in preparation . That’s only if you don’t want to just rip off the stucco

    You are one of my favorite channels to follow for home improvement projects. I'm actually running into the similar situation, i have 1" rigid foam and building up 1" buck around the opening where we can install window (nailing fin) on the top it looks like perfect solution, this way the foam will be flush with the fin. The only question is when reviewing the code and installation instructions it says: "Embedment must be a minimum of 1 1/4" into the structural framing" So is the 1" buck counts as the "framing" since technically it is 'outside' of the wall framing? My window depth is 3.25" that leaves 2.25 before the fin minus the sheeting 0.75" which leaves 1.5" embedded into the frame (2x4) If we build the buck 1" out, that will technically leave the window only 0.5" inside the frame (2x4)

    I talked to Owens Corning. You can make the window Frame and treat the rigid foam as a second sheathing and then places the window flashing on top of the rigid foam. much better, much cleaner looking, and less susceptible to leaks.

    If the windows were built out to match the insulation, the wrap should be installed on the installation.

    Taping the house wrap to the bottom window trim is probably a bad idea. If there is a leak around the trim, it will funnel water right to the sheathing. But then that's probably the best you can do without taking the windows and redoing the sill pan.

      @bcoldwell1 3 года назад

      I had the same question. You now have a vapor barrier inside behind you gyp, on the warm side, and with the xps, you have added another vapor barrier. Kind of possible to "trap" any vapor moving from warm to cold.
      There is - I have heard - a rule of thumb about what % of you R value can be outside the housewrap, vs on the warm side.
      I'm doing the same as done here, so need to figure it out. Roxul is vapor permeable, so isn't an issue I don't think.

    • @Faruk651
      @Faruk651 3 года назад +1

      This is why it is not a good idea to use XPS foam (like the one used in this video) on the exterior side of the house. Instead you should be using EPS styrofoam. Because eps foam will not trap vapor.

    • @Faruk651
      @Faruk651 3 года назад

    • @ducebigalow8834
      @ducebigalow8834 6 лет назад +1

      Typically yes, longer nails or I would use screws for vinyl siding. I would not strap the rigid prior to vinyl siding, as you could get air behind it thus rattling the siding.

      @@ducebigalow8834 odd. Never heard of rattling siding. Where has this happened?
      Several builders do recommend @NateM's idea of furring strips. The air gap also acts as a water runoff if there's a water barrier there for anything the siding doesn't stop (like backed up gutters, melting ice dams, etc.)

    Shouldn't all the wood used at the bottom of the house and the electrical unit be treated wood?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  6 лет назад +1

      No not really, it is not in contact with the ground and really should not get wet often and if it does should easily dry out. If you use treated wood then be sure your nails/screws are ok to use with treated lumber and you would have to use copper or some kind of vinyl at the electrical service because metal or aluminum should not be in contact with PT wood. You could use metal or aluminum if you used a membrane or maybe even house wrap between the PT and metal.

    Hi Shannon, I have a question, Im putting up LP osb panel siding and removing old masonite. The walls have foil covered 5/8" insulation board nailed to the studs that are insulated with fiberglass batts. Of course the interior walls have a plastic barrier finished with sheetrock. Does the plastic barrier on the interior serve as an adequate vapor barrier with the foil covered insulation board? I have already finished one wall on the house and put house wrap over the insulation board. was that wrong or even okay but unnecessary ? Im getting ready to start on another wall and considering replacing the 5/8" insulation board with the 2" that you used in this video. Thanks

    You are not afraid of putting Typar over OSB and foam over? Have you seen what happens to OSB or any other sheathing after 10 years if you do this? In my opinion, you are trapping moisture that will condense on the outside side of the sheathing, between the sheathing and Typar. The wall is covered with the foam and moisture doesn't have a place to go, which will rotten the OSB. This method probably should work in the warm climate, but will destroy the sheathing in the cold climate. Great advice on the corners using 1.5'' foam and 1/2'' OSB to make it flush.

    looks good but, it seems you have skipped the top 6" or so of the wall, above the soffit. Judging by the ship lapped for sheathing, the roof rafters are likely birds mouthed, so that your soffit as down on the wall. That is a pretty large strip of the entire house to ignore. the Rigid should run up to the roof sheathing under the soffit (minus the vent space for the attic). What did you do for this, or is this house different than my assumption

    • @HouseImprovements
