I was wondering if you could do a review on the gable end of the house as there is no overhang from the roof, just dripedge. Hello Shannon, I love your videos they always have great info. I am getting ready to reside my home. It already has foam board insulation underneath siding. Would it be ok to reuse the existing foam board insulation?
Here's on for you (and any other builders). I want to 100mm EWI my house with a render finish on the ground floor and vertical hanging wall tiles on the first floor. How on earth can I hang literally tons of vertical tiles upstairs securely? Any advice appreciated
if anyone can answer: will placing this foam insulation, the additional water barrier and then sealing the whole insulation/water barrier now make a moisture trap? a moisture trap that will not let the wall breathe and thus create moisture damage and a mold problem?
You could install form top down if you wanted. extruding items in the way can be cut out so you can get the foam on around them and then spray foam the holes /gaps tight with low expansion sprayfoam in a can. If you have more questions please use my forum. www.house-improvements.com/forums/
About the house wrap and insulation - what about the moisture that comes out of house with the air, doesn't it get stuck between the wrap and the insulation?
Don't you have to have a vertical rainscreen strapping on top of the foam board (1x2 treated) to prevent the condensation between the siding and the foam board? If so, you would have to build up the window trim even farther out.
Taping the house wrap to the bottom window trim is probably a bad idea. If there is a leak around the trim, it will funnel water right to the sheathing. But then that's probably the best you can do without taking the windows and redoing the sill pan.
Awesome video. Thank you. I notice that your soffit is in place before you apply the foam. Is it ok to put the foam on first and then install your F channel and Sofitel over the foam?
So, if you're going to cut out for the window extension, why not do that when you're putting up the foam insulation? Why cut twice? Doesn't that also risk cutting your air seal? Thanks.
If I'm adding 2 new windows on a new wall that isn't sided yet, would you recommend adding the foam board prior to installing the windows like you said in video? And installing wood like a picture frame to match the depth of the 1 inch foam board? Or would you recommend just installing windows on the sheathing and then adding the foam board on top and going from there
In the case of new windows you would picture frame the opening like you said with wood the same thickness as the foam and then install the window and foam gets installed against the picture frame.
Love your videos. I have rewatched this three times and I still don’t understand what you did at the corner. Why cannot you nail all the way through to the corner studs with your siding fasteners? I just can’t visualize why addition OSB and 2-by is necessary. 😅
The thickness of the added styrofoam (2" in this case) moves the corner piece of siding to far away from the original corner wood of the house to actually hit it with nails. The system I use gives you some plywood to fasten to again. Wider corners that what I have may reach without doing what I did , but in my area wider corners are not available.
@@HouseImprovements I am adding 1" foam, do you think that corner will still be an issue for my build when adding the battens and LP Smartside siding panels?
That meter pan is an odd detail - and it appears to be newer than the house? Whatever siding goes on, I think that install needs redoing just because they will have a surface mount box halfway embedded. Get 15 years down the road and it needs replacement or upgrade, no guarantee of anything going right without tearing up that wall [again]. I find Spax washers do a decent job of preventing fastener pull-through on xps style foam.
Meter is maybe 20 yrs old. Not worth pulling it to extend the panel feed wire IMO. Really common to work with what is there , you have a good point however I could have left some extra room for future changes to it. Its a 200amp service so not likely it will need upgrading however.
Will the 2 inch foam stick out past the windows/doors? If so won't that mean the J will be out past too? I thought you said on another video to not let the J stick out past the windows?
What about the soffit j-channel ? Would you screw the soffit channel over top the foam ? Or would you have to put a strip of wood for the j-channel then run your foam just to the bottom of the wood strip ? No one seems to know this in my area. Please help
Hello Shannon, thanks for your excellent videos! Where do you find shiplap style foam board here in the US? So far, all I see is square edge. Thank you.
is exterior insulation vital? Building a house in NC, mild temps, should I do the exterior or just stick with 2' by 4' studs and fiberglass insulation in the gaps?
great video, good explanations, what is on the inside of these walls, and are you insulating for heat? or cold? or both? I am in Central Ontario Canada, winter runs about 4- 6 months some years.
@@HouseImprovements Oh yeah, I have seen the weather you guys get. Something Else I was asking is what is on the inside of the house? in the wall cavity.
I see that on top you are going up to the soffit. Would it be better to remove the soffit/j channel and place styrofoam all the way up? Also what are your thoughts about digging about a foot or more around the foundation and installing the foam down bellow grade? Thanks
I had the same question. You now have a vapor barrier inside behind you gyp, on the warm side, and with the xps, you have added another vapor barrier. Kind of possible to "trap" any vapor moving from warm to cold. There is - I have heard - a rule of thumb about what % of you R value can be outside the housewrap, vs on the warm side. I'm doing the same as done here, so need to figure it out. Roxul is vapor permeable, so isn't an issue I don't think.
This is why it is not a good idea to use XPS foam (like the one used in this video) on the exterior side of the house. Instead you should be using EPS styrofoam. Because eps foam will not trap vapor.
For the tyvex/Typar what size roll did you use? 10 ft x 100 ft roll? Thank you, I need to do this to my house. I assume the next step is to add wood strips, then thi siding...
Does it have to be Ridgid? I was going to see what comes in a roll. We are doing a shed I also bought house wrap and siding. Please tell me the name of any products that you could recommend We are in Florida moisture is a big deal here never really cold tho
Awesome video! Thanks so much. I was wondering if you would recommend combining the foam board with rockwool? I want at least 3 inches of outside insulation so was think the comfortboard 80 and 1 1/2 foam board
I would not combine the two. You also need to be careful about how much exterior insulation you add depending on your existing interior insulation and your climate. You should consult a local engineer or good contractor for their advise on this.
Hi Shannon. I have a question. I'm working on a 80's single wide mobile home what would you recommend for exterior insulation I put on? Thank you. Love all that you do!
Because the roofs on most mobile home is have seen dent over hang the walls adding foam is not very easy to do because you are increasing the width go the home wider than the roof . If you have roof over hang than consider that IMO if you add less than 1" you are wasting money.
thanks for the reply. so, basically are you saying it's better to have no over hang? Right now it has none but, going do the roof. what do you think overhang or not? I was thinking about 2" insulation board of some type.@@HouseImprovements
Hi Shannon, I'm learning alot from your videos. I'm preparing for vinyl siding applied to existing wood siding, would you be adding furring strips to your foam insulated walls for nailing "new" siding to or do you apply siding directly to foam and use longer nail to insure vinyl is nailed to wood?
Great video Shannon. Waiting for warmer temperatures to start my siding project. Material is in yard. Haven't yet ordered the XPS foam board but, I'm considering using FOAMULAR 250 3 inch R-15 insulation Sheathing under 10 inch staggered shake vinyl siding for a NY zone 4 climate. Any thoughts?
can i use cedar singles on top of that insulation? would i have to use straping on top of the insulation or would i be able to shingle right on top ??? starting my cedar shingles next week. im in mass and this its a great idea for a little extra insulation.
If your rigid is 1" or less thick I would say you could go right over it but if its thicker I would be inclined to either sheeting over the wall first and then installing house wrap and shingles or strapping the wall with 1x4s. We could discuss this more on the forum if you need more info.www.house-improvements.com/forums/
how can we hire you! :) wish the local contractors here were as diligent -- shiplap style rigid foam, wow! nobody has ever mentioned this option to us for air sealing.
I'm a contractor and don't trust nailing the vinyl siding though the 2" styro. I decided to strap on top of the rigid. Have you ever installed vinyl siding that way?
Sir, do you have any videos on building a ground level deck? Great videos by the way. Having a hard time finding anything on how to prep for the build.
If it is tongue and groove Pink Board, installed vertically, should we still use tape? AND, should the pink board be installed Vertically or Horizontally? Anyone? Thank you.
how do you install the siding then? Use 3 inch nails then? Does it not defeat the purpose of thermal bridging then to put a million nails in through the foam? No rain screen or furring strips?
Typically yes, longer nails or I would use screws for vinyl siding. I would not strap the rigid prior to vinyl siding, as you could get air behind it thus rattling the siding.
@@ducebigalow8834 odd. Never heard of rattling siding. Where has this happened? Several builders do recommend @NateM's idea of furring strips. The air gap also acts as a water runoff if there's a water barrier there for anything the siding doesn't stop (like backed up gutters, melting ice dams, etc.)
Hi Shannon, curious why the wrap isn't taped at the top of the wall where it meets the soffit? Ditto the foam board? Going to be residing my 100+ year old house next summer, as well as wrapping and foam boarding it. No one ever seems to explain what to do with that top edge...
Hello It's really great work, however I couldn't understand how you did the corners. Did you bent the styrofoam, the nail it and added the half inch wood on top of it. Thank you
The corners I installed a strip of 1-1/2" foam up each side of the corners then I covered that with a strip of 1/2" plywood . Then i butted 2" foam to those and filled in the rest of the wall surface. The 1/2" plywood on the corners makes applying nails easier for trims and corners.
Hi Shannon, I have a question, Im putting up LP osb panel siding and removing old masonite. The walls have foil covered 5/8" insulation board nailed to the studs that are insulated with fiberglass batts. Of course the interior walls have a plastic barrier finished with sheetrock. Does the plastic barrier on the interior serve as an adequate vapor barrier with the foil covered insulation board? I have already finished one wall on the house and put house wrap over the insulation board. was that wrong or even okay but unnecessary ? Im getting ready to start on another wall and considering replacing the 5/8" insulation board with the 2" that you used in this video. Thanks

@@HouseImprovements - doesn't the bottom 2x6 ledger board you used create a thermal bridge? Wouldn't it be better to use a type of metal edging at the bottom and then use the foam? Does this type of bottom metal edging exist?
Nice project
Thank you for so many minute details that make such a big difference in doing this right! I was wondering if you could do a review on the gable end of the house as there is no overhang from the roof, just dripedge. I guess what i'm asking is how to extend dripedge over the styrofoam and vinyl siding? Thanks
Ah yes that is a problem if you are adding foam when you have no gable overhangs. If you come to the forum we can discuss this situation in depth better. www.house-improvements.com/forums/
Hello Shannon, I love your videos they always have great info. I am getting ready to reside my home. It already has foam board insulation underneath siding. Would it be ok to reuse the existing foam board insulation?
How could I insulate exterior block walls here in Tampa, FL? I am wanting to put the insulation material/products on the outside of the home.
Come to our forum with your question we can help you from there.www.house-improvements.com/forums/
@@HouseImprovements I only have a Gmail account and I cannot register.
Beautiful work my friend!
Would like to see how to address existing exterior faucets. Installed boards from the bottom up rather than top down. Is it easier? Thank you Shannon.
There is very little here because we have a vapour barrier on the interior.
Don't you have to have a vertical rainscreen strapping on top of the foam board (1x2 treated) to prevent the condensation between the siding and the foam board? If so, you would have to build up the window trim even farther out.
Some places need a rain screen some dont. If you need it then yes you need to be wider with your trim
After the house is wrapped do you need the foam before putting the siding?
You dont need to add foam, its only if you want to add insulation value.
Great detail! Thanks! What kind of tape do you use on the vapor barrier?
Taping the house wrap to the bottom window trim is probably a bad idea. If there is a leak around the trim, it will funnel water right to the sheathing. But then that's probably the best you can do without taking the windows and redoing the sill pan.
Awesome video. Thank you. I notice that your soffit is in place before you apply the foam. Is it ok to put the foam on first and then install your F channel and Sofitel over the foam?
it is , on thicker foam it just means longer screws
@@HouseImprovements - I was wondering the same thing as Richard. I see that you answered his question. Can one stucco over the foam?
So, if you're going to cut out for the window extension, why not do that when you're putting up the foam insulation? Why cut twice? Doesn't that also risk cutting your air seal? Thanks.
you could do that.
Is it possible to change soffit after adding foam to the exterior wall? Also what's the best way to install foam around existing deck?
I wish you were here in our area
Will the 2 inch foam stick out past the windows/doors? If so won't that mean the J will be out past too? I thought you said on another video to not let the J stick out past the windows?
again I asked to soon bad habit
What about the soffit j-channel ? Would you screw the soffit channel over top the foam ? Or would you have to put a strip of wood for the j-channel then run your foam just to the bottom of the wood strip ? No one seems to know this in my area. Please help
Hello Shannon, thanks for your excellent videos! Where do you find shiplap style foam board here in the US? So far, all I see is square edge. Thank you.
I'm in Canada so I'm not sure . Its readily available all over here.
@@HouseImprovements
Thanks for replying. I did some more research and it looks like they call it tongue and groove also.
is exterior insulation vital? Building a house in NC, mild temps, should I do the exterior or just stick with 2' by 4' studs and fiberglass insulation in the gaps?
It will help keep the heat out better as well but for your area it is not likely as critical to use it.
great video, good explanations, what is on the inside of these walls, and are you insulating for heat? or cold? or both?
I am in Central Ontario Canada, winter runs about 4- 6 months some years.
Both! I'm in Saskatchewan so cold is our main reason to insulate.
@@HouseImprovements Oh yeah, I have seen the weather you guys get. Something Else I was asking is what is on the inside of the house? in the wall cavity.
Hi Shannon, I love watching your videos you have all the details step x step. Just wonder if you can do a Hardie plank video...
Don't have one coming up right away but that is on our wish list
He’s definitely the best! Very detailed videos!
I've seen furring strips used on top of the foam. Would you expect that much moisture to creep in and need to dry out?
In some regions that is required.
Would you suggest using spray foam in the corners to help adhere the foam most at risk of being blown off?
You can but you can also throw in a few extra fasteners.
I see that on top you are going up to the soffit. Would it be better to remove the soffit/j channel and place styrofoam all the way up? Also what are your thoughts about digging about a foot or more around the foundation and installing the foam down bellow grade? Thanks
Both of those are great options if you can.
What do I do if I have a bare block wall?
Is any chance mold can appear between foam board and home wrap? As I see there is no gap for venting. What do you think?
There are EPS styrofoam sheets that has channels on the back side which helps air movement and ventilation. Durock has Puccs Styroams as an example.
Can you do this In a cylinder block house? Cause my house has no insulation on it
Is house wrap necessary if the foam is going to be sealed?
For the tyvex/Typar what size roll did you use? 10 ft x 100 ft roll? Thank you, I need to do this to my house. I assume the next step is to add wood strips, then thi siding...
Would installing Styrofoam on the outside block foundation of my manufactured home be a good idea to control heat loss in winter?
Most are insulated inside.
So what trim was used around the window?
The painted trim is made by "Smart Trim" and the PVC trims are pretty common at most big box stores and lumber yards.
Hi! I want to know if styrofome is recomended for a house made of wood? And to put styrofome on the inside as well?
nice explanation I am planning on doing this I was wandering do you recommend open or closed cell
Rigid foam panels are all closed cell. Spray foam can be purchased as open or closed .
@@HouseImprovements ok thanks
can the same be material and technique be applied on block or brick?
Does it have to be Ridgid? I was going to see what comes in a roll. We are doing a shed
I also bought house wrap and siding.
Please tell me the name of any products that you could recommend
We are in Florida moisture is a big deal here never really cold tho
For Florida you should check your local codes for specific types of adding insulation , You have unique climate variables compared to my area.
@@HouseImprovements yes I know most videos are geared to up north conditions we got humidity moldoldew and rain damage here to consider.
@@HouseImprovements Will do! Thanks for the response. I really appreciate it
I install directly over the foam . In this case I have 2" foam and Im using 3" nails.
:) wish the local contractors here were as diligent -- shiplap style rigid foam, wow! nobody has ever mentioned this option to us for air sealing.
i have an older home with aluminum siding i want to remove aluminum add 2in foam do i need house wrap under the foam
You should have it either under or over the foam, it should be installed
Excellent stuff
I'm a contractor and don't trust nailing the vinyl siding though the 2" styro. I decided to strap on top of the rigid. Have you ever installed vinyl siding that way?
I have not but you can. IMO it is really not needed but it won't hurt anything.
Sir, do you have any videos on building a ground level deck? Great videos by the way. Having a hard time finding anything on how to prep for the build.
If it is tongue and groove Pink Board, installed vertically, should we still use tape? AND, should the pink board be installed Vertically or Horizontally? Anyone?
Thank you.
Im wondering too, i say no tape and grooves vertical on studs
how do you install the siding then?
These tapes dont stay stuck to wood so its a waste of time .
Hello
It's really great work, however I couldn't understand how you did the corners.
@@HouseImprovements
Thank you
do you tape the seam where the 2” butts against your clever corner assembly? if so, do you tape the osb to the 2”?
I do not.
Muchas gracias ❤
Thanks
Yes , the interior poly is the vapour barrier, it is always placed on what would be the the warm side of the wall during winter months.
@@HouseImprovements THANKS SHANNON. I am assuming the house wrap over the existing insulation board would be redundant. Correct? Thank you again, Ive learned a lot watching your videos and the boost in self confidence is invaluable.
This is going to sound gay or something but your channel and approach is very warming and easy to listen to for burgeoning tradesmen like myself.
I like the work you do. Underneath the foams if it is bricks, instead of plywoods, what types of fastener would you consider to use? and how long of the fasteners is good? Thanks
I'm not sure you should add this over brick. We can discuss it more if you omit the forum www.house-improvements.com/forums/
