They said because Mia was supposed to be very clumsy, they thought it would be a perfect fit and yes, she did actually fall on those bleachers for real. Also when she accidently lit the mans sleeve on fire, it was supposed to go out after putting it into the ice bucket but it didn't, so that was also a blooper they kept in :)
oh man, the books are so good. like, completely the opposite direction of the movies and yet disney managed to capture the energy really well. Mia's dad is alive in the books and rendered sterile by testicular cancer treatments, so she does have an established relationship with her royal side of the family at the start and her father is in her life, but her grandmother is awful. Like, chainsmoking, 30's pencil eyebrows, has a shaky overbred toy poodle named after a US WWII general, throws constant shade at Mia's mom, etc. Mia's dad bribes Mia into taking princess lessons by donating $100 a day to Greenpeace. it's a really interesting study of stylistic choices informing character too. late in the series, Mia is diagnosed with depression and goes to therapy and they kinda re-examine the events of the books thru the lens of how depression operates. her highs and lows are a lot more purposeful than they appear, even with the extreme pressure of a royal appointment. that one hadn't been released at the time of making the movie. i'm not sure it would have changed much because 2001 was not an era that understood mental health wealth. and the books do take place in NYC! lol i have no idea why disney changed it to SF
If I'm remembering correctly, the director Garry Marshall changed it to San Francisco because he grew up there. If you have the DVD, there's a commentary by the director on it. I must of watched the commentary track at least a dozen of times.
@@jazflanagan8693 i hope you do! from what I remember, it was a really fun series that also had some stuff to say. the books were more political, mia had a larger friend base who were good characters in their own right, and the story grows up as the books progress. it even goes deeper into lana's character.
Fun fact: in the scene where Mia reads the letter from her father, the man writing the letter by the water is actually Anne Hathaway's dad in real life, same thing in the photo.
"Because that's what every single teenager wants. Someone to analyze them up and down and point out all their physical flaws." And this is why you get Mary Poppins to deliver it. It will suddenly seem totally reasonable and will raise your self-esteem, somehow. 🤔
29:12 I went to middle school with that girl, the year I moved to San Francisco. She didn’t really get to enjoy the fact that she got a speaking role in the movie; she’s Hector (Joe) Elizondo’s niece, so of course all the petty teenagers in school just gave her a hard time about “getting things handed to her” by her famous relative. We were almost friends-I and several others tried to get closer, to form genuine friendships-but I think she was too afraid of people taking advantage. Juliet, wherever you are, I hope things got better for you.
The director for this movie created such a good atmosphere for the cast and crew especially since they were working with young people. They had birthday parties and fun activities on set so everyone could bond. Also, Whitney Houston produced both movies. Another fun fact: the actor that plays Michael comes from Hollywood royalty, he is a member of the Coppola family.
I'm loving how the adults in this movie are cool. No ones forcing her to do things, they actually talk to her about stuff and give her a choice. Plus the addition of the teachers helping getting her away from the media. It's just nice to see a movie where everyone doesnt completely suck and doesnt care about the main characters feelings.
My only complaint is that so many "makeovers" in movies take a lovely curly-haired girl and turn her into a lovely straight-haired girl, why can't curly hair get more love?! It just needs more conditioner, it's not a character flaw!
30:19 thats actually a common thing among royals to do. If a guest or the royal themselves embarrasses themselves, do the thing too to take the attention off of them. There's a story that Queen Elizabeth had a dinner with African leaders, and when they were brought lemon water to dip their fingers, they thought it was for drinking, and did so. The queen then proceeded to do the same thing too.
Ohhhh! I knew it was familiar! I saw princess diaries before I saw pretty woman and when I saw that scene in PW, I was like, “hey! That’s just like PD!” This is good to know lol my feelings were on the money.

"Hey teach, how you doing? Are you married? You wanna be married?" sorry but that was smooth hahhahaha And with this movie I realize my love for Julie Andrews
15:43 Random thought here: From my experience, whenever a guy went "Hey __ likes you!" I never took it serious because it seemed like they were just saying that to embarrass their friend so it didn't seem genuine. Like it was a joke to make fun of him and sometimes it strangely felt they were also making fun of me. Kinda as if part of the joke was "haha let's see if she believes it". That was my experience since it would happen with guys I didn't really know and sometimes it was just a joke. If your friend actually liked me, have him say it himself don't yell it at me as I'm walking to class or something. That was my rambling Ted Talk, thank you. Btw, nice videos buds :)
Same here, but since I was a fat kid at school I thought they were saying this to mock me instead, pretending a friend was interested in me so that I would believe it and then they'd laugh etc. Which did happen a couple of times, so bc of that, I just rejected every single time someone said "hey, my friend ___ likes you", because I immediately assumed it was a joke on me and I couldn't show signs of weakness or it'd be worse. This led me to even nowadays as an adult, always believe people are mocking me when they show signs of romantic interest. So I immediately reject even now, idk why, I just have a hard time believing someone would do it seriously.
@@heyitsmira17 thankfully, this didn’t happen to me, but, I am the same way in regards to feelings directed at me, especially as someone who was also one of the fat kids growing up. My first thought isn’t like, “oh my god, they like me!” More like, “……..why…?” And that’s assuming I believe them lol I never like them back anyway, but even if I did, I don’t think I’d accept it, because, my low self esteem just thinks that they don’t actually like me or if they do, it won’t last long. But yes. I know what you mean. I can never truly comprehend why someone would like me, physical looks aside. It just confuses me lol
I think though it's because of the change. She's a character that's being bullied. It's an obvious change that now can be used to further the bullying by making you feel ashamed that you tried something different. Like you aren't good enough to look better/change style. Unfortunately that is a real thing :/
I went to a catholic school with uniforms. All the kids knew how to get around the dress code without breaking the dress code. The girls and guys would roll the bottom of our shirts to make them looked tucked in, girls rolled up their skirts to make them short but not too short, and socks were ankle height but just BARELY. Rebels lol
ok but as much as i love this movie, looking back on it, i really hate the makeover scene / theme that teens especially are exposed to. being shown that you aren't 'beautiful' because of your frizzy hair or thick eyebrows is such a damaging thing for a younger audience.
that’s what i’m saying! and she’s only 15, so people at that age are at their peak. hate to sound like i’m milking this, but what makes a person so beautiful is they have a genuine approach to them like concerning for others that they care about. and if they’re lucky enough to be equally blessed with good looks, then that’s just a bonus. but overall, their good natured quality over shines everything else. period.
Anne and Julie were MADE for this movie like I can’t even imagine any one else. Also about the cucumbers they really don’t do anything however the coolness can help with eye bags/puffiness, it also just feels good lol
Thanks for standing up for curly hair. It always annoyed me that he got shocked that the brush broke off. You're supposed to only brush it when it's wet. And, yeah, I feel they balance Lily's personality a lot more in the movies than in the books and she's a lot more likable. In the books she was horrid.
@@seeing8spots Yup. She went too far in one of the books that I honestly hoped Mia broke off her friendship with her completely. But they probably did make up.

The movie has some deleted scenes between Michael and Mia that set up a romantic connection, and I get why they cut the scenes but I wished they stayed in because it would’ve solidified the connection before the whole Josh at the beach thing. Great reaction, as always!
Yes, the books do explore them more and it's lovely. I am hoping if a sequel is ever made, Chris Pine character is ditched and Mia ends reuniting with Michael, and it's something that will also make sense book wise actually.
i had really bad anxiety today and once i got the notif that my fav commentary channel reacted to my comfort movie, my mood was immediately lifted. thank you for this.

Oh my God, I was thinking he looks like someone but couldn't place who, and now with this information I've realized that I was thinking about Jason Schwartzman; who's also a hidden Coppola.
Lilys Brother is actually the singer of the Band Rooney and since I know this, I've always "When did your heart go missing" stuck in my head when I watch that movie.
the thing with these types of Disney movies is that when you are surprised at how well written the plot or characters are it's because most of the times they're based on books. this is one of those cases.
I will never forget. When I was in 4th grade (long ago) we had an officious, awful teacher. One sweet girl in the class jumped up out of her desk and started heading to the door (the bathrooms were accessed out in the hall) and the teacher stopped her and demanded she come ask for permission to go. She was in front of the teachers desk and she said, "May I please ..." and that was as far as she got before she spewed across the teachers desk and all over the teacher. I'm sure it was mightily embarrassing for her to have thrown up in front of the class, be we all cheered in that moment, and she was hailed a hero as that is what we thought the teacher had coming to her and exactly what she deserved.
As someone with severe anxiety and depression for over a decade, public speaking does not always get better over time and can absolutely get worse over time if forced.
I loved this movie as a teenager. I related to Anne Hathaway's character A LOT and you guys made really great points that I don't think I fully noticed back in the day, but still weirdly remembered; every character had their flaws, but was self-aware and corrected it or was told it in a straight-forward manner, every character was either multi-faceted or simply really funny, and every character seemed like a normal person that you would meet in real life and not like an over-the-top, flashy personality. I need to rewatch this again. Great reaction!
Fun Fact: Robert Schwartzman's character, Michael, her love interest in this movie is actually a musician on a band that has been pretty popular called "ROONEY". Their first album got pretty famous after doing an episode on the Series The O.C.
Little fun fact: The woman who plays Charlotte is Kathleen Marshall, Garry Marshall's daughter and the guy who plays the paparazzi guy who says "we're waiting for you" is Scott Marshall, Garry's son who is also a director. Garry was always known for including his family in his projects. Also 28:28 was not scripted. Anne actually did slip and fall on her butt and it was kept in.
I remember I read the entire book series and when the movie came out finding it charming but very different from the books so I was 50/50 on it. Looking back though it was a GREAT movie and the main theme of forging your own path is still very present. fun fact though: in the books Mia's father is very much alive, he just had cancer and can't have any kids bc of it, so Mia is his only biological child and therefore the only possible heir.
Stef's reaction to "italian" Paolo is just wonderful :D I actually did that balloon painting thing as an art project in school, except we put darts on a remote control helicopter and flew those to pop the balloons - it was fun and very messy

You guys should react to Peter Pan (2003)! it's such a buried treasure, and imo the best Peter Pan adaptation with Hook coming in at a close second. It's also live-action and a lot more mature than you'd expect from a kids story, the acting is superb and the effects are great. I've always wanted a male's perspective on what they thought of the movie bc I always believed it was beautifully made and really made you believe in the relationship between peter and wendy, but I never knew if that was just bc as a female I could relate to wendy and her feelings, and that I had a massive crush on Peter lmao.
Ooooh, yes! That version of Peter Pan has been my comfort movie since it came out. I've had to replace the DVD twice since I wore the old ones out haha! As a kid I had a giant crush on Jeremy Sumpter, the actor who played Peter. His leaf suit was cool as heck too! As an adult, I am vastly impressed by Jason Isaacs - what a menacing performance! The way they created a live action Tinker Bell was really neat, as well. I bet our pals the Movie Buds would like it, but I know their list is already loooooooooong. But who knows, maybe we'll luck out! Wow okay I wrote a lot 🤔 Thanks for bringing this movie up!! I haven't seen it in awhile, now I think I'll watch it again.
I remember watching this movie and liking it. Enough to watch it a few more times. But it's the insight that you guys have about characters, plot progressions, and character development and motivations that make me realize WHY I like the movie a lot. That's what I like about your commentaries. They're never judgmental, never pretentious. You approach these movies as film fans, not critics which makes it enjoyable for me to watch and appreciate fully. Keep up the good work and looking forward to more of your reactions. Cheers!
That thing about uniforms is so true. My middle school in NY had to wear uniforms (bc it was charter which is like a mix between public and private- its free but you have to take entrance exams to get in usually) and it was so obvious that the kids like me who were poor had like two uniforms that i had to cycle through not to mention the school decided to change the uniform design the next year so everyone had to buy new ones. my single mom could not afford one shirt for $50 let alone a weeks worth for two children especially when we had a closet full of perfectly fine clothing. Oh and the overpriced gym uniforms too. It was a breeding ground for bullying and utter embarrassment.

I haven’t seen LOTR in awhile! What was the Aragorn and helmet scene? 😳
@@SusanaCanales1 When Aragorn kicks a helmet and yells because the actor actually broke his foot on it
@@EmmaThw no way! Jeez! And he kept acting anyway?
Tbh all she needed was a good curly hair routine
I always loved how supportive were the people in this movie, the prime minister and his wife, Joe, the assistant. It was so refreshing to watch it as a kid
Okay, now you have to watch the sequel. It's even better, and it has Chris Pine.
By “better” you mean “easier to make fun of”, right?
Planning on it 😊 - Sam
Neat, while it's mediocre compared to the original, I really hope that they review it!
@@SessVlogs Pretty much lol. I actually enjoy it more, though
Love both
"there's no I in team but there is in piss off" 😂😂😂 I need to use that cause thats too fucking good!
Literally GOLD
The Joe and Clarisse plot line is my favorite part of these movies
They're the cutest
My ONLY favourite plot line 😅
Fun fact: Anne Hathaway fell from her chair when she was doing the audition for Princess Diaries and that's how she got the part.
Wow, I've never read the books so I didn't know they were SO different. Now I actually want to read them.
@@jazflanagan8693 i hope you do! from what I remember, it was a really fun series that also had some stuff to say. the books were more political, mia had a larger friend base who were good characters in their own right, and the story grows up as the books progress. it even goes deeper into lana's character.
@@TiffanyVenus no, i only watched the movie a couple of times with my cousin back when it came out.
@@jazflanagan8693 They're a lot of fun! ☺️
i mean if Julie andrews came to me as a teenage and told me i was a princess and gave me a makeup - i wouldnt hesitate
When I found out Whitney Houston produced this movie I understood why it was so well made even more.
My only complaint is that so many "makeovers" in movies take a lovely curly-haired girl and turn her into a lovely straight-haired girl, why can't curly hair get more love?! It just needs more conditioner, it's not a character flaw!
I think it was just the style for the 2000s but I agree. Give the curls some love.
And the glasses! As if glasses make you less of a person
I kinda love that, thanks for sharing this fact.
I love the “It happens all the time line,” it’s a call out to a scene from Pretty Woman, which is another Garry Marshall film
It's the same actor as well 😄 (I wondered and googled it haha)
And it’s used again in princess Diaries Royal Engagement and Gary Marshall used the same actor all 3 times.
Ohhhh! I knew it was familiar! I saw princess diaries before I saw pretty woman and when I saw that scene in PW, I was like, “hey! That’s just like PD!” This is good to know lol my feelings were on the money.
@@hleebeg lol! Nice! I thought so too, when I watched pretty woman for the 3rd time and paid more attention to that scene.
I always hated even the face of that "cool guy"... he's so sleazy. He really SOLD it the best. Hated his guts since the first time saw the movie :D
P.S.: this movie is absolutely fantastic! Thanks for reacting and bringing back so many great memories ^_^
Same with the main mean girl, hated her guts but that's her selling it good!
@@JazMegan I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to look past the fact that it was Mandy Moore (hard to look past that if you’ve watched her in her main roles first) but she’s so good at acting the mean girl that I completely forgot it was her lol
That's Erik Von Detten. He was very popular around the late 90s early 00s. Fun fact, he doesn't act anymore!
I like the fact that you guys aren't dismissive of "girly media" or whatever that means

Thank you, it's a story revolving around different themes doesn't mean men can't enjoy it
Fun fact, one of the cats who played Fat Louie was Anne Hathaway’s very own cat.
Of course princess diaries is top tier when Gary Marshall and Whitney Houston are at the helm. This was my entire childhood I had two vhs of this cause I watched the first one so much it got messed up.
Hahahaha same, i had the vhs because i watched it all the time 😂❤️
This is one of the first DVDs I ever watched
I rewinded the "he's not pierced, tattooed..." part so many times to see the look on their faces. 😂

And with this movie I realize my love for Julie Andrews
Gosh the amount of "oohs and ahhs" when a curly haired person has straight hair is hilarious. 😅
I think though it's because of the change. She's a character that's being bullied. It's an obvious change that now can be used to further the bullying by making you feel ashamed that you tried something different. Like you aren't good enough to look better/change style. Unfortunately that is a real thing :/
I always quote the "not you I don't even know you!" And no one ever gets it lmao
That is my favorite quote from the movie 😂
I say this too often 😂 you're right, no one ever gets the reference lol
I went to a catholic school with uniforms. All the kids knew how to get around the dress code without breaking the dress code.
The girls and guys would roll the bottom of our shirts to make them looked tucked in, girls rolled up their skirts to make them short but not too short, and socks were ankle height but just BARELY. Rebels lol

ok but as much as i love this movie, looking back on it, i really hate the makeover scene / theme that teens especially are exposed to. being shown that you aren't 'beautiful' because of your frizzy hair or thick eyebrows is such a damaging thing for a younger audience.
that’s what i’m saying! and she’s only 15, so people at that age are at their peak. hate to sound like i’m milking this, but what makes a person so beautiful is they have a genuine approach to them like concerning for others that they care about. and if they’re lucky enough to be equally blessed with good looks, then that’s just a bonus. but overall, their good natured quality over shines everything else. period.
Especially since she actually does look beautiful with frizzy hair and thick eyebrows.
Yeah and the whole "you can't be pretty if you wear glasses" trope pisses me off because I wear glasses 💀
Honestly with that frizzy hair all she needed was curls serum to really bring them out and they would have look gorgeous.
It's the only setback, but it's also understandable... Especially for those times and it being a Disney movie.
Anne and Julie were MADE for this movie like I can’t even imagine any one else. Also about the cucumbers they really don’t do anything however the coolness can help with eye bags/puffiness, it also just feels good lol
I still quote "thank you for being here today" with the hand motion, even 20 years later. lol

She's truly horrid in the books. It really put me off her character and the books in general lily is so bad..

Just more proof that she's an amazing actress.
Joe is by far the BEST character in this movie :D
Also, I have to say I really love how most of the adults actually are trying to help Mia out, protect her, back her up, etc. I don't see a lot of teen movies doing that.

A little trivia: the guy that plays Michael is the cousin of Nicolas Cage.
This is one of my main comfort movies. It speaks to me at every stage of life in a totally different way.

I hear you Jenna, it’s such a great film! I honestly forgot how good it is 😋 - Sam
the thing with these types of Disney movies is that when you are surprised at how well written the plot or characters are it's because most of the times they're based on books. this is one of those cases.
The writer neighbor is honestly my favorite character in the whole movie.
Sandra Oh is lowkey the MVP of this movie.
Thank you, I fully agree 👏🏼👏🏼

The queen saying "Blaze on up!" when she's driving with her in the mustang, has become a family saying for much the same situation.
Is so refreshing watching you guys like this movie, I wish more guys have your kind mentality cuz they still stuck with mindset of 14 year old
Yaaaaaaas, you made my morning again. This movie is one of my favorites!
Yes I love this movie and the sequel, Chris Pine is dreamy and all, but Raven is were it's at.
I would say Michael is more oof a George Harrison than a Ringo
Little fun fact:
The woman who plays Charlotte is Kathleen Marshall, Garry Marshall's daughter and the guy who plays the paparazzi guy who says "we're waiting for you" is Scott Marshall, Garry's son who is also a director.
Actually Mia has a younger sister in a spinoff book series.

I recommend reacting to the move ‘Stardust’ it’s a movie that i think has that same fantasy vibe as ‘The Princess Bride’, but the cast is stacked and the plot is really good, I completely forgot it existed until a few months ago and I think it would be a fun one for you guys to react too.
Plus the score for that movie is amazing!
6:30 I legit cannot stop laughing, the look on your face was priceless 'The moment is now!'
How have I never noticed that my mum has the exact same tea set as queen Julie Andrews in this movie 😅
