This movie was such a delight! Was so fun watching a coming of age film centred on such a down to earth and quirky character who becomes a princess. Enjoy :)

That fall on the bleachers is just Anne Hathaway falling 😅 it wasn't scripted, she just slipped and carried on. Apparently one of the reasons she was cast was because she is naturally a bit of a clutz and fell off her chair during the audition 😅

In the books Mia's father is still alive. The producers said to Meg Cabot, the author of the books, that they want to kill the dad off and give the grandmother a bigger role, because they had a really great actress in mind. Sends such an unfortunate message to young girls. But hey, that's what it was like growing up in the 90s. I can attest, there was a very narrow window of what was considered cool or stylish and individuality wasn't as appreciated as it is thankfully becoming nowadays.

the second one is extremely good, many even feel it's much better than the first, so i definitely recommend watching it too!
(tangent about lily under the cut lol)
yeah, definitely agree about lily. i do think it comes from a place of youth and insecurity + jealousy, so i'm not surprised she acted the way she did. her personality type is obviously the kind that has strong views about society and rights, etc, and is as much of an outcast as mia. so from her perspective, one day her bff's rich relative shows up and all of a sudden mia's entire look changes, she's become trendy, and even her mannerisms are changing (due to the princess training), and she's not being open/honest with her anymore and obviously has some kind of secret. from lily's pov, it's probably like a nightmare, her best friend is basically becoming representative of the thing she hates. hence the belief that she "sold out" because now she has money thanks to her grandma and can do whatever she wants. obviously, none of that excuses lily's behavior, but i feel like it makes her more understandable. we as the audience can see all that mia's going through, but lily can't. i do think the comment about mia's dad dying and it being "what like two months" is pretty harsh, but again, mia never knew her dad, wasn't close to him, and so from the pov of someone who probably never had a family member die, it would seem weird to still be upset months later about someone dying who was for all intents and purposes a stranger. and as someone whose own dad died about a year and a half ago, people just...don't know how to talk to you. they say the weirdest things, obviously unintentionally, but still. if they haven't experienced it themselves they just _don't_ get it. i just assume it's that plus being very young that makes it so incomprehensible to lily.
i think she didn't get enough of a redemption in this movie to equal how awful she was to mia, but there just wasn't enough time, and their friendship isn't the focus of the movie. i think there would have been some really nice messages to be had if there had been more of a focus on friendship though. this could have easily been a tv series (especially considering it's an adaption of a book series), and had it been i think lily would have gotten much better character development. same goes for lily's brother--the love interes--but again, romantic love isn't the focus of the movie, it's about her relationship with her grandma and personal growth. it's a bit of a shame the side characters with potential didn't get so much attention, but it is what it is, and i still love the movie regardless! enjoyed your reaction and commentary as always :)

FunFacts, aside from the things mentioned in previous comments:
    1. Anne mentioned once or twice in an interview that Julie Andrews happens to be a blood relative.
    2. Mia's father was played by Anne Hathaway's real father.
    3. Anne got the role just by falling on a chair.😅
    4. The premise of the story is quite similar to a real life royalty(more like a prince's daughter). A 14-year-old American girl discovered that she's a daughter of Prince Albert of Monaco. Though unlike the movie, she's illegitimate but still attends family engagements in Monaco.
    5. Anne Hathaway shared the same birthday with the only Oscar-winner turned royalty, Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly known as Grace Kelly. She's the mother of Prince Albert. Princess Grace died in less than 2 months before her birthday, the same year of Anne's birth.
    6. You will see actors and scenes similar with another famous Gary Marshall movie, Pretty Woman.

I love this film so much, it has such great scenes and is so iconic, I don't know how many people notice this on first watch, but I love when Julie Andrews character Queen Clarice makes a jab at the Baron and Baroness being Barron meaning that they can't have kids and it's funny because She said that without princess Mia Govier would cease to exist as they know it and Violator adding that she hopes they will stay Barron is just that next level of hilariously cruel humour that adds so much more debts to her as a character into the entire film which adds to the iconic Ness of it and is something that people don't really notice until secondary watch or on Woods, which changes the whole perspective of the film and well this is a cruel joke it also just fits perfectly with her character and like I said it's easy to miss it and just play off the whole Barron Baroness thing, but if you really pay attention it just makes more worldbuilding, there are so many scenes like that in both this film and the sequel that just add to this world and despite their only being to films it really feels so built out and I don't know if that's partially to do with the fact that there are also books, butknow the films don't really follow the books so who knows, but either way these are such iconic and amazing films and Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway adjust so good in these roles.

I’m so glad you’re enjoyed this! I never really read the book but this was my first Anne Hathaway movie and yeah I’m a big fan! Fun fact: When Anne Hathaway went to audition for the role, she literally fell out of the chair during the audition and right there is when the director knew that she was their Princess Mia of Genovia. Also I love Julie Andrews! I think my favorite part has always been where Mia and her Clarisse have a day out, and she is educated on the meaning of shut up in the teenage language. Joe is certainly the MVP; the moment when Mia fell on the bleachers, Héctor Elizondo was genuinely concerned as that moment was not scripted. I really recommend you watch the sequel as it’s not only funny, but as charming and empowering. Other Anne Hathaway films I recommend are Les Misérables, The Devil Wears Prada, Ella Enchanted, Get Smart, The Hustle, Rohan Dhal The Witches (2020), and Ocean 8. For more Julie Andrews I must recommend Eloise at the Plaza, Eloise at Christmas, and Tooth Fairy. For Héctor Elizondo, I recommend Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, Tortilla Soup, Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, and The Lego Batman Movie. If you’re also looking for a good romcom with royalty I highly recommend Red, White and Royal Blue. I also recommend the series Young Royals.

About Lilly: I know it's like popular now to hate her and say she's a bad friend but I don't get that at all. Yeah she was a jerk in the car because of Mia's make-over but as soon as she told her the truth she apologised AND stood up for her at school. Plus, she kept her secret and didn't try to take advantage of her. If anything, Mia was a bad friend. She promised Lilly she would be on her show but she was a no-show (to be with a boy she liked who was a jerk even before he kissed her) AND didn't even let her know about it which made Lilly look like an idiot on live TV. Yet, when Mia apologised she immediately forgave her. Lilly literally had one bad moment and she was a 'bad friend' but for 95% of the movie she was a good and supportive friend.
Also, cats lay on EVERYTHING, especially paper 😂
Anyways, this movie was literally my childhood. So many fun facts about it:
It is based on a book of the same name by Meg Cabot. There are some huge differences though, like Queen Clarisse is not nice at all and her & Mia don't have a good relationship (she is also the one who outs Mia as a princess to the press). Mia lives in New York instead of San Francisco, her dad is alive in but has cancer and Mia & Michael don't get together until much later. However, the second movie just erases the rest of the books and takes a whole different direction. At first I was really pissed about that but the movie is so good (not as good as this one but still good) and it's got Chris Pine!
If you haven't seen them, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music are a must! And fun fact: Miss Andrews also voiced Queen Lillian, Fiona's mother, in Shrek 2-4.
Also, other Anne Hathaway movies I recommend are The Devil Wears Prada (with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt), Ella Enchanted, Valentine's Day (with an ensemble cast), Alice In Wonderland (with Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman etc.), Les Misérables (also an ensemble cast) and The Intern (with Robert DeNiro).
Michael is played by Robert Schwartzman who's real life band, Rooney, appears as the character's band. He is related to the Coppola family and Nicolas Cage. He wanted to change his last name in the credits to Cage in honor of his cousin but the movie's promotional material had already been finalised.
Lana is played by Mandy Moore who voiced Rapunzel in Tangled and has starred in movies such as A Walk To Remember (which I recommend), Saved! (with Heather Matarazzo, Jena Malone and Macaulay Culkin), Chasing Liberty (with Mark Harmon), Because I Said So (with Diane Keaton), License to Wed (with Robin Williams and John Krasinski) and 47 Meters Down (with Claire Holt) as well as NBC's hit series This Is Us. She is also a singer.
Lilly is played by Heather Matarazzo. Along with Saved! she has been in Scream 3 and 5 for instance. She once revealed she was scheduled to attend a meeting on the 15th floor of the World Trade Center on 9/11 shortly after the attacks occurred but she overslept.
Joe is played by Héctor Elizondo who has been in pretty much every movie Garry Marshall has directed - including Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve. He has also been on shows such as Chicago Hope and Last Man Standing.
Charlotte is played by Kathleen Marshall, director Garry Marshall's daughter IRL. His twin granddaughters also appear as the little girls who ask Mia for autographs and Garry himself, along with his wife and sister, has a cameo as a guest at the ball.
Paolo is played by Larry Miller who has also been in many Garry Marshall movies, as well as 10 Things I Hate About You and The Nutty Professor. He was also on the show Mad About You which starred Lisa Kudrow as Ursula Buffay (her character was incorporated into Friends as Phoebe's twin because of Lisa).
Helen, Mia's mum, is played by Caroline Goodall has been in movies such as Schindler's List, Cliffhanger, Hook and Chasing Liberty (in the last one she plays Mandy Moore's mum).
Vice Principal Gupta is played by Sandra Oh who is best known for her roles as Cristina Yang on Grey's Anatomy and Eve on Killing Eve.
Baroness von Troken is played by Bonnie Aarons who plays the demon nun in The Conjuring movie franchise (mainly The Nun).
During her audition, Anne Hathaway fell out of her chair and was immediately given the part as clumsy Mia Thermopolis. She was literally born for this role. Also, Garry Marshall's granddaughters watched the tapes of actresses auditioning for the role and they told him he should hire her because she had "good princess hair". This was her first movie role her and breakout role-she was 18.
Speaking of being clumsy... Mia falling on the bleachers was not scripted. Anne Hathaway slipped on a puddle while doing the scene and director Garry Marshall thought it was so funny that he inserted it in the final cut. Furthermore, the dinner scene when Mia accidentally sets the guy's arm on fire, the flames were supposed to go out when he put his arm in the ice bucket but they didn't. Anne panicked and threw the glass of water on it. Also, in that scene a waiter says "it happens all the time" - The same actor plays a waiter in Pretty Woman who says the same line to Julia Roberts' character. Both movies were directed by Garry Marshall.
Amanda Bynes, Scarlett Johansson, Emmy Rossum and January Jones auditioned for the role of Mia while Alyssa Milano turned ir down, fearing being typecast for playing girl-next-door characters.
Dame Helen Mirren was considered for the role of Queen Clarisse.
Laura Prepon was offered the role of Lilly but turned it down.
Mia's cat Fat Louie was portrayed by four different cats, one of whom was actually Anne Hathaway's own cat. Each cat served a different purpose: one was meant to be carried, another sat still for extended periods of time, a third was used for jumping and stunts and the final (Anne's) is in the movie's final scene.
The photo of Mia's father in the movie's opening scenes is a photo of Anne Hathaway's dad. He is also the one you see in the flashback scene when she's reading the letter.
It was Anne Hathaway's idea that the brush should break. She had to wear a clip-in hairpiece to create Mia’s hair pre-makeover and it was affectionately nicknamed "the beast" by the cast and crew. Her eyebrows took about an hour to apply as each tiny hair had to be individually glued in place.
It was also Anne's idea to have the pore strip on her nose during the scene when Michael comes with Mia's car. In that scene Mia is also watching one of the movie's deleted scenes.
During filming of the tea scene in the garden and the greenhouse scene, airplanes were flying over the area. When the scenes were finished, Garry Marshall gave Anne Hathaway and Dame Julie Andrews awards for "best acting in airplane interference".
While filming the final dance scene, Madonna's "Like A Prayer" was played on a boom-box to get natural dancing from the actors on-set (to be then dubbed over by the song that appeared in the final cut - Miracles Happen by Myra) and the actors kept mouthing the words to the song.
The on-screen relationship between Clarisse and Joe was not scripted. They just had so much chemistry, especially during the dance rehearsal scene which was improvised.
For the first half of the movie, Clarisse wears only black and dark outfits. After Joe says "You've been wearing black too long" during their dance, she starts to add more color to her wardrobe. It is later revealed that her husband, King Rupert, had passed away the previous year. This can be interpreted as her still mourning his death, but as she falls in love with Joe her personality becomes alive and colorful again.
The movie was co-produced by Whitney Houston. The scene in which Mia smears her ice cream cone on Lana's cheerleader uniform was her idea.
The movie was filmed on the same sound stage Mary Poppins was filmed, which has since been named "The Julie Andrews stage". The rental house in which Julie Andrews lived while filming Mary Poppins was lived in by Garry Marshall while filming this movie (If you haven't seen them, Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music are a must! And fun fact: Miss Andrews also voiced Queen Lillian, Fiona's mother, in Shrek 2-4).
The castle at the end is the Longford Castle located just south of Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.
Garry Marshall's favorite saying while making a movie "Everybody works!" was loosely translated into Latin to become the Genovian motto "Totus corpum laborat". The pillow Fat Louie is lying on at the end has that phrase.
Towards the beginning of the movie when Mia is on the way to school, she crosses the street on her scooter where a limo passes behind her-It's Clarisse's limo.
When Clarisse first sees Mia she says "Let me take a look at you". This is the same line Julie Andrews' character says in The Sound of Music when she meets the children.
During the makeover, Paolo calls Mia's eyebrows Frida and Kahlo- Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist who had a unibrow. He also mentions Brooke Shields and Groucho Marx who were both known for their thick, dark eyebrows.
There's a short mid/post-credit scene where Mia tries to kick the ball but falls instead.
Sorry if this is too long. Kudos to you if you read all that 👍🏻

Doesn’t matter if it’s been 2 months a year or 2 years. Like who says that. My dad died last year and yeah there are days i still cry but if a friend loved one or whoever ever said that to me I’d be livid. It doesn’t matter that Mia never got to know him. That doesn’t make pain hurt any less. And to tell someone how they SHOULD be feeling not cool at all! And Lily only semi redeems herself with sticking up for Mia in class. And then Lily saying hey I didn’t tell anybody you were a princess. Like she wanted to be rewarded or a given a golden star for being a “good human being”. And Mia did way better at apologizing. Lily’s apologies needed to be way more flushed out it was too level surfaced and okay all is forgiven then.

Also, as a kid I definitely understood the friend more than I would now if I watched it for the first time at 29 years old. It’s very early highschool behavior especially being in the misfit/outcast group and only having that one friend. It was probably super hard for her to process that she felt being left alone and behind by her only ride or die friend. It’s not an excuse to be rude like she was, but I had fights with my girl besties in highschool that were resolved THAT quickly. It’s just how the homies roll 🤣

And that's not even the only thing. Telling her, "Oh I thought you were over that." about her dad's death. Like, what? EDIT: I wrote this before I got to that part but I'm so glad he even said, "I hate her more than the other characters." Because yes.

To answer about how crown moves so julie Andrew's is queen because she married into the royal family. King and Queen had their son and only child, so he was the next in line for the throne. Once he had mia and she was a princess and second in line for the throne (even tho only the queen knew about mia) outside of mia and her dad aka uncles, aunts, and cousins are in line for the throne also. So when mia's dad passes, she is heir to the throne being next in line. So when our queen says if mia is deny becoming queen giving up the crown, it would go to cousins, uncles, or aunts. The couple that state they will get the crown back. I believe are cousins so if mia says no to being queen and her royal duty, it will more likely go to them or whoever is next in line behind mia.
Update: In the second movie, you learn more about politics and how gender affects the crown. I will not elaborate because that be spoiling the plot of the second movie.
