This movie is, I feel, at its core, about women supporting each other. The sorority girls supporting Elle, the advisor telling Elle what she needs and not disregarding her, Elle helping Paulette with self confidence, Elle and Viviane supporting each other, Elle keeping Brook's secret, the teacher telling her not to give up... I think that's beautiful.
@@IceQueen975 that's true. there's crappy men and women in the movie ofc but they're not one dimensional and it's not their characterization simply for the sake specifically promoting "girl power" but just rising above crappy people in general lol (esp when they underestimate girls)
When they said she needed 175 and got 179 I always thought she barely passed. I just recently realized that the scale for the LSATs is 120 to 180. So getting a 179 means Elle basically got a perfect score after studying for like 1 semester!
Yep, because she is very smart. She just puts her mental energy towards things considered frivolous by mainstream society (her fashion knowledge and people skills)
I always thought the same thing. It's pretty insane when you think about it. I mean her advisor was at least realistic with her and told her what she really needed if she wanted even a chance of getting in but the fact that she needed a near perfect score and she actually got it is pretty spectacular for anyone, let alone someone who wasn't studying anything remotely similar before that
Elle Woods is also one of the only female characters in early 2000s movies who‘s portrayed ultra feminine - lots of pink, glitter, loves fashion, etc. - who isn‘t a bully. Think Sharpay Evans and Regina George. Elle‘s looks are exactly like theirs, but her character is the complete opposite. Most of those movies had the effect that many young girls would try and separate themselves from anything stereotypically female when they entered their teens, in order to avoid the negative stereotypes. Elle encompasses everything those other movies told us was bad, and she is kind and successful. I think that‘s huge.
I love how this movie highlights how wrong certain stereotypes can be. it shows Enid, the student who has a "PHD in women's studies" yet still just as judgmental and nasty as everyone else is to Elle.
It's ironic that Enid seemed to fancy herself a feminist yet treated another woman poorly for having stereotypically feminine traits and interests because she doesn't value those things as valid and worthy. Meanwhile Elle genuinely celebrates all women no matter how they dress, what they study or what their interests are and that's why most of the women in the movie are easily drawn into her orbit eventually. It's interesting because I think in any other movie, Elle would have been demonized and portrayed as the annoying one note character that the main cast ignores because she has nothing valuable to say. I love that this movie did the opposite because she's so lovely and positive and intelligent.
As Karen Walker put it in Will and Grace season 2: "Husbands come and go but the Chanel slingbacks are forever." Two ways of saying the same thing, but both are extremely true. Especially if they're one of a kind slingbacks like in that show.
They don’t live in a dorm at the beginning. It’s a sorority house, basically a mansion where members of the sorority or fraternity lives. The reason she goes to a different uni is because Law is a graduate degree in the US. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fashion, then went to grad school for the Juris Doctor at Harvard.
It is strange that the 1Ls (what first year law students are called) live in a dorm. Dorms are typically for undergraduate students (and usually only first or maybe second year students).
But... She already graduated in fashion? I don't really get it. In Germany you go to Uni for a bachelor's degree and then you can specialize and do a master's degree. But the subjects in which you graduate have to be somehow related, not like fashion and law.
@@moongirl8807 In the US it’s helpful for some degrees to be related, but it’s not necessary for all of them. For example, I’m a nurse and have a psychology degree and I’m considering law school. Law is one where they don’t have to be related. They also take work experience and extracurricular activities such as leadership roles into account. Many schools also look for people from a wide range of educational backgrounds. Being the leader of a sorority, doing charity work and having a fashion degree actually makes Elle a really good candidate for law school, especially if she was interested retail or commercial law. Also in the US, law is technically a doctorate degree, not masters.
The reason why it's important to establish that she did _not_ have an affair with the pool maintenance person is that her defense against _not_ killing her husband was that she loved him too much. If she was found to be adulterous, that would go against her narrative (in a monogamous society like ours).
A friend of mine recently pointed out that Warner supposedly went to get the ring right before breaking up with Elle, and that the motivation was to get serious. Elle was a side piece. This also explains why Vivian is initially so hostile - she only knew her as the other woman.
Omg I never thought of Elle as the “other woman” but it explains so much. Especially why Vivian (who is shown as much nicer later in the movie) is so hostile toward Elle
[jaw drop] I had never once noticed that, but holy hair color, it makes so much sense! Although it does make Warner that much more of a dick if he was running a bicoastal 2-time.
I never saw it as him dating them at the same time, but more as him having Vivian in mind already as his backup plan when it was time to get serious. Since they already dated before, it might have seemed easy for him to get back together and seal the deal quickly. I also thought him meeting his grandma might have set that into motion - pressure from his family to get going with his career suddenly increasing.
THE SOCIAL NETWORK starts in Fall 2003 and Elle Woods is Harvard Law class of 2004 in LEGALLY BLONDE. This means Elle Woods and Mark Zuckerberg were at Harvard at the same time. In this essay, I will...
I love that the movie is much like the main protagonist, Elle. It's easy to jump to conclusions about them, and there's a lot of areas where you kinda expect... shallowness? Like, parts can seem painfully cliché at first, but notable don't really go like you might initially fear. Elle and the movie are girly, earnest, colorful, and a lot deeper than given credit for! Their greatest strength is embracing who they are, rather than trying to be something more "academic" and masculine! It's really refreshing, and feminist too!
I agree that Elle and Emmett should've just been framed as friends by the end of the movie, that would've been a bold move in 2004 lol. Although, their relationship in the broadway musical is elaborated on and its great
I think both the musical and the movie both portray their relatioship very different to what any other romantic sitcom with a woman protagonist did for years. In the movie is more subtle and it really doesn´t change much. In the musical, Emmett helps her discover her potential with motivation and support. During the whole musical, he is a nice person who truly sees her potential but her lack of friends for support since everyone underestimates her. Elle also helps him become more profesional to be taken more seriously. They both suffer from the same stigma and shallowness in different perspectives, yet they help each other rise to the top without compromising their essence. The musical adds this and I find it the most beautiful thing ever.
I really don’t like the way the musical does it though, because they set it up as “Elle needs Emmetts help in order to succeed in law school,” but in the movie she did it on her own
@@laurasalas8375 But the musical sets it up as a trade-off. Emmett doesn’t just “make Elle suceed.” He believes in her and pushes her. Same for Paulette, as she constantly pushes Elle to succeed, in her own way. The trade-off happens with Elle pushing Emmett to become more dignified and look the part; to be more suave, ultimately becoming more confident in his abilities. They become really close friends who support each other. Then through the bond, they realize they love being around each other. They are each other’s biggest cheerleader. It’s pretty awesome (and healthy, might I add).
She wasn’t “hopping from Uni to Uni”. She graduated from undergraduate school (bachelors degree) and went on to graduate school at Harvard. That is why she was depicted at two separate schools.
I scrolled through here to see if anyone had explained this was going from undergraduate to graduate. Hope the budz saw the explanation back in the day
in middle school i remember being looked down on for wearing pink and enjoying being feminine, this movie was my biggest source of comfort in those days and i love it’s message of self love so much
Same. Now I rock my happy girly Lilly Pulitzer basically every day! We should never let anyone put us down for what we love to wear and more do things we love! And I love how even today when it’s looked down on to be feminine this movie can be a reminder to love yourself and you can stay true to yourself while still going for all your goals.
I have also reverted into everything cute. I don't care whether it's appropriate for my age. I love pink and purple, I love anything cute and I'm not apologising walking around dressed like a Disney character!
Same. Although I don’t think it was people so much as just media. In every movie I watched as a child the quirky, boyish girl was the good guy and the girly, pink loving girl was an asshole. Or she was stupid. Makes you think the only way you can be appealing to guys is to stand out by being “not like other girls”. But in reality they don’t even care. Now that I’m older I’ve learned to embrace my feminine side and my masculine side for what they are and I just dress and act however the fuck I feel like it. Trends and media be damned.
Always wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing. With me, if you love the way you look, I love the way you look. I work with models so people assume I judge appearance. But at the end of the day, your standards are the only ones you need to live up to. If you like how you look in pink, I can introduce you to one of my models, she'll help you wear that pink like a star.
The Marilyn line that Warner says at the beginning may also be a hint about how smart Elle really is. According to people who knew her, although Marilyn didn’t have a formal education (something she was very embarrassed about), she was actually deceptively intelligent. Her whole dumb blonde persona was actually her building a brand.
I personally am ok with the engagement, as the relationship is healthy and lovely and believable, and there is the sense that they work together and also having the guy in the background supporting her works for me.
@@themoviebud1988 their relationship is even better in the next movie, he’s so supportive of her and her dreams. Plus their relationship is more of a background plot as the main focus is Elle in Washington D.C.
@@kingofqueens5128 their romance is also better in the musical imo. Not that it's bad in the movie, its just they spend more time together to gain chemistry in the musical
@@carlosalejandroalvarenga4913 haven’t seen the musical so I’ll take your word for it, yet weirdly I have seen a reality show where contestants competed for the part of Elle in the musical 🤷♀️
It's a terrible cringy name. You're def not alone. Although I always thought it was pooh bear like Winnie the Pooh (not that that makes it much better.
@@ZariDV Not only is it super cringy it's just so creepy and uncomfortable. Like I would genuinely feel very uncomfortable if anyone called me pooh bear in ANY context other than like a joke maybe
@@ZariDV Omg I know, regardless of how crappy a nickname it is, like that's such a slap in the face. It's like when you and an s/o do something that's pretty specific to your relationship and then after y'all break up, you catch the other person doing that one thing with someone else.
The breakup scene was always interesting to me. When Elle brings up hair color on the surface it's to make her dumb but what's more interesting is that those are the only differences she's sees between them. Her ex is comparing them by looks/stereotyping. Elle sees them both as fully capable women with skills and talents that don't make wither lesser and there for thinks hair color is what's the issue.
It warms my heart to see two blokes calling Warner on his bullshit. Also, I can't believe this film only has a 6.3 rating on IMDB - I mean, there's a reason they adapted it into a musical people, it fucking rocks!
probably because male movie critics generally hate anything teen girls and women really enjoy, especially movies they'd call "chick flicks" (essentially any movie focused on a woman) (pls note i don't mean this about sam and stef at all!)
Unfortunately I know there are a lot of nasty guys (I even know a few), especially online, but I have to thank you, because your comment on that subject reminded me of when I first watched this film! I was with my dad, a very traditional and quiet man. He was born in 1936, and as we watched "Legally Blonde" together, it got to the scene where Warner tells Elle she would never get the internship because she wasn't "smart enough". Dad got SO angry with Warner he screamed at the tv: "What a JERK! She WAS intelligent enough to enter law school and she better prove him wrong now or this movie is gonna make me very angry!". Dad cheered out loud and jumped off the sofa at the end of the film. lol A lovely memory. Thank you for reminding me of that moment, Anna.
@@edisonlima4647 Thank YOU for sharing that wonderful memory of your father. Reading your comment made me smile as I imagined your father cheering. What a wonderful memory to have.
I feel like Legally Blonde is one of the movies that just across the board everyone can at least appreciate. Male or female, high femme or super goth, everyone loves Elle. 💗
My dad loves watching this movie with my mom and I, it’s his favorite “chick flick” movie. The enjoyment from both is probably because it doesn’t really “talk down” or demean any gender just for being a guy or being a girl
I do feel like I should point out that most law students and lawyers I know all claim that law school expects you to have the read the stuff beforehand. So the first classroom scene where the professor calls out Elle for not knowing the relatively basic thing is at least partially accurate.
one thing I love with the party scene is that when Warner asks Elle why she's wearing a costume she doesn't rat Vivian's trick out to him, because she's a total class act. also, Callahan's advance on Elle where he implies he'll give her a job in return for sexual stuff is called quid pro quo sexual harassment
made this comment on the first upload but want to do it again since it got some great replies the first time One part I always love was Warner's "I need a Jackie Kennedy not a Marylin Monroe" bit because of just how wrong it it. Contrary to popular belief, Marylin Monroe was a smart and educate woman, and Jackie Kennedy was THE fashion icon of her time. Both women were very smart and fashion forward, yet Warner discredits one just because she acts somewhat ditzy, which, by the way, she only did because the studio told her too. It was also the studio that told her to change her name from Norma Jean (btw I personally love the name Norma Jean!) and to dye her hair. That's right, Marylin was actually a brunette! If anything, Elle perfectly emulates both women!💕
Someone mentioned that Warner may also have been seeing Elle on the side while having a relationship with Vivianne the entire time and if that’s true the comparison connects to the movie even more. I also love this information.
I'm really glad you lads looked deeper and didn't just make fun of this movie, it's actually pretty clever! We expect Elle to be shallow and dumb just because she's blonde and likes to shop but, isn't that expectation shallow and dumb in itself? This movie is iconic and deserves more love honestly
44:17 The term you're looking for is "quid-pro-quo sexual harassment." Usually occurs in workplace, essentially rewarding a person with advancement (e.g. job, promotion, raise) in exchange for sex. Too bad Elle never takes legal action on this, because she'd have a good case with Vivian as a witness.
This was 2001. A woman making claims against a man such as this would have zero chance in a lawsuit. She would come out as the bad guy. I'm the same age as Monica Lewinsky. I remember how these things worked. You just had to shake it off and avoid the a-holes. Your employment was at their whim. Things are better now.
i love that warner was waitlisted while elle got in immediately because of her actual qualifications. he kept saying she wasn't smart, but he was the one who was dim in every possible way!
I really like this movie but the stage musical is even better, it was filmed for MTV so a high quality version is a available, you should really react to it. They made two changes towards the end that make Elle's character even better.
I agree! I played Vivienne for a local theater. A bucket list role that I never knew I wanted. The musical has quite a few great changes (especially in Emmett’s character arc).
I prefer the movie, actually! I think the musical is a bit more on the nose about its themes- but maybe that's also because of the differences in performance style.
Fun Fact: Elle getting a 179 on the LSATS means she got a near perfect score. A lawyer friend of mine said that 180 is a perfect score, and getting a 179 means that she maybe missed a half a point on one or two questions. In a sense, this paints Elle as supper smart, and points out that Warner is an idiot.
@@themoviebud1988 I second watching the musical! It does do much justice to the story and characters. The pro-shot is free on RUclips. Loving this channel!
I hate that Vivian automatically assumed the worst of Elle when she saw her w Callahan but I love that Emmett immediately believed Elle when she told him 🥲 the way he was helping her from the start, and not just cuz she’s pretty, cuz he could see she was smart and a go getter. A MAN!!!
As a result of watching the first commentary and seeing Reese wearing all her girly things, I was inspired to wear my hot pink shirt when I was taken out for lunch 2 days ago - it just felt like the empowered woman thing to do! It made me feel really happy
Just some comments from an American to try and hopefully clear up some confusion you guys were having in the beginning!! - So Elle wasn't living in a dorm she was living in a Sorority house!! In the US we have "greek life", which is when people join a sorority (for girls) or a fraternity (for boys). You have to pledge to get in, so you have to choose the sorority and the sorority has to choose you type of thing. They're kind of expensive and you have to pay to be in one. At some big state schools they have "greek row" which is where theres a bunch of mansions on a block and all the sororities and fraternities have one. (So for example, Delta Nu, would have their own special house). Again, this is EXPENSIVE so it's really only for rich kids honestly. - For the question if she's going to another school! In the US we have 4 years of high school, then 4 years of UNDERgraduate school (which is where Elle was) where you get your Bachelors! Then if you want you can go to more schooling called GRADUATE school! That's where you can get your masters or PhD, etc. So she was applying to Law school which is an extra 3 years of graduate school to get her Masters of Law! (Medical school is also a graduate school and thats 4 years so it ranges on what you study). - ALSO for the Law School thing where the professor calls on people randomly (idk if its common in other countries) but in the US in LAW school specifically it is VERY VERY common its called "cold calling" and it ensures kids have done the reading. I don't know if I agree with doing that but to each their own I guess! Sorry this comment is so long! This is one of my all time favorite movies so I thought I would help try to clear some stuff up! Love your content!
I don't like commenting on old posts, but I disagree with one of your comments. You are correct except about the cost of being in a sorority/fraternity. As another person pointed out, the membership dues depend on the organization. This was years ago and my personal experience, but I think mine was few hundred dollars per semester. I understand how some still could not afford that amount though. The money went for events we did (both social and charitable), our sorority house (a modest 50 years old three bedroom house that some of members lived in), and to the national organization. Not only do the dues differ among different sororities/fraternities, but their specific "vibes" do as well.
@@missserenity1090 Yep! Most of my friends were in a fraternity whose fees and house rent together were less than my regular rent. The frat across the street cost easily 5x that 🤷♂️
Also, let’s not sleep on the fact the CULA is meant to represent UCLA one of top/competitive universities of the country and our girl, Elle was rocking a 4.0 gpa. 🙌
Watching you guys react reminded me of this paragraph I read (sorry don't have the exact cite): "In Legally Blonde, Elle only gets accepted because she's hot and sent a video, but she had a 4.0 and got a 179 (out of 180) on her LSATS. Sure, her major was in Fashion Merchandising but that's a business major, and the fake school she was at was supposed to be UCLA so she has a business degree from a major college, probably went to a great high school, had a 4.0, and a 179 on the LSATS and at that point, she would have been automatically accepted so why did they make it sound like she was such a bad risk? She even had leadership experience as president of a major chapter of what is apparently a huge sorority, since Delta Nus are shown as everything from cheerleaders to senators. Harvard should have been desperate to take her. She should have been able to get in if she turned in a cocktail napkin with her name written on it. So why make up the bullshit excuse of "multiculturalism" to justify letting in an extremely qualified and highly driven candidate just for laughs? Elle Woods deserved to go to Harvard and she earned that place with academic excellence and not by being hot"
@@marketawilezinska8817 I do like that despite the main chairman being skeptical, the other members list her achievements/accreditations to put her in a good light and are willing to give her a fair chance.
Honestly Elle Woods is such a lovable character, she’s sweet, funny, and smart! She was never bitchy and while she went to Harvard initially for the wrong reason she ended up learning how horrible Warren is and then she ends up liking being a lawyer. She’s the best!
43:50 it's not extortion or blackmail! The term you were both looking for is quid pro quo sexual harassment. Basically its when someone in a position of power suggests that sleeping w them will get you a better job/raise/etc. If he threatened to get her expelled if she didnt sleep with him, it would be extortion. If he threatened her to continue sleeping with him, or else he'd tell everyone that's the only reason she got the job; that's blackmail! Thanks for coming to my terminology Ted Talk 😂
What i thought was a good touch was putting the same song "Perfect day" at the beginning where she's just getting all dressed up and ready to impress a guy, and than adding it to the end at her graduation where she has grown as a person and did something great for HERSELF, thus changing what a perfect day for her actually means now.
Harvard is only one of over 300 universities and colleges in the boston area. Boston IS basically a giant college town, but it’s not all Harvard. As someone who lived down the street from Harvard for a few years, Harvard was the rich kid school, MIT was the smart nerds. But grad school is different. Most of those in Harvard law school are smart and driven, just like Elle!
This movie came at a time (that frankly still exists) where bimbo culture was mocked. The pick me girl was always the protagonist. Women were shamed for being exactly like Elle. This movie shows the strength and value of EVERY kind of woman. Sure the "pick me" starts as the villain. But they use a mutual understanding and a support to bring her around and eventually bond with other women instead of perpetuating competition culture that movies often do regarding women. I LOVE this movie so much
I really like how they showed Emmett’s and Elle’s relationship in this tbh, it’s not like every other movie where she depends on him to succeed in the main plot, and the movie establishes the relationship without like a kiss scene or anything, it’s just him being supportive of her and it felt more natural and less Hollywood to me
That's the part of the musical that I didn't like. In the musical, Emmett was the one who got Elle to be serious about her studies, when in the movie, Elle was self-motivated. I get that the writers wanted Emmett to have a bigger role in Elle's story, but I feel like there could've been another way
ok i haven't seen anyone else say this so i'm sorry if they have, but there is a sequel to Legally Blonde that i think you guys should check out , it's called Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde
Exactly! Marilyn was a talented entertaininer, kind and intelligent while Jackie was a journalist before she met JFK and was a successful book publisher/editor later in life. There weren't just pretty faces
I think the main reason why I love this film so much is because Elle gets to be super feminine and still be portrayed as smart, hardworking, capable and loyal. Its honestly refreshing. Especially back in 2001 when this came out.
I like that they include her practicing the LSATS during her sorority having some kind of event right next to her. Maintaining focus in a potentially distracting environment is key.
In order to become a lawyer, one must go to graduate school (Elle attended undergrad to get her bachelor's in fashion design) and it is quite common to attend a different university for grad school since a good portion of schools that offer bachelor's degrees don't always have master's and/or doctorate degrees offered, or if they do, they don't always have the ones a student may be looking to attain
39:23 If that's the first wife saying she saw her sitting at the pool "topless while the latin boy handed her a drink", didn't she say to Elle and Emmett that she'd "never actually met the woman?" Granted meeting someone and seeing someone are two different things but still. And in any case, how could she even have known about the alleged affair - wait, was she paying the guy to say he was having an affair with Brooke?
this is one of my all time favorite movies lol but that scene where she has to leave the classroom, reminds me of all my friends at uni that were business majors and their horror stories with the professors. my uni is known for its music school and it's business school, both of which are hard to get into (especially music), but I heard a lot of stories abt how professors bragged abt how hard their classes were and how "half of you won't be here in a week" and how some professors would lock the doors 5 mins before class starts and if you get there after you're SOL but you can only have 2 absences, the list goes on I meanwhile had a major in a liberal studies category so I never had this problem LOL
@@themoviebud1988 my roommate my first year there was a finance major and always so stressed out, I felt so bad for her. there's a project for all the business majors as well that's a 5 class grouping and if you pass any of the classes with lower than a B- you fail all 5 and have to retake them, it sucks
😂 😂 😂 I'm not stoned as I rewatch this reupload tonight but I have to say this, even if it may be very cheesy and fluffy, this film is such a feel good and uplifting film. Love this. To give you two some context. Elle is from California on the west coast where she got her undergrad degree. Then she goes to Harvard, which is in Boston (on the opposite side of the country) for law school. Typically for law school, you have to have an undergrad degree. She is legit going from public university to Ivy League, and there's a giant shift in attitude since Los Angeles is known for being easygoing as opposed to Boston which is known to be rough around the edges. All of this studying and character arc.... for a man??? Overall I'm happy Elle realized what happened and pretty much got a career in law out of revenge. lol

I always tend to forget Vivian’s perspective when I watch the movie and focus on her and Ellie eventually learning to support each other. I mean, in her mind she also was under the impression that Warner was a man worth fighting for as well. I doubt many women wouldn't be intimidated if after getting engaged in a short period, the ex-girlfriend she was told extensively about, positive or negative, suddenly started going to the same college as them and their new fiancee, and was actively trying to win him back. It still doesn't make her behavior ok with how she talks and treats Elle, but it helps me understand how she can feel justified in it until she starts realizing she's in the wrong. That and while Elle recognizes Vivian as a rival, she never does anything malicious to Vivian herself, unlike the things Vivian does.
Elle Woods is the epitomy of women supporting women. This was the first movie I watched that made me feel like women can be rockstars. At 12 years old... i literally wanted to be a lawyer after this and did a project on why.
This is what Marylin Monroe would have wanted. The depiction of a woman who is more than just a beautiful blonde; a woman who is intelligent, confident, trustworthy, determined, and good-hearted.
I have had 3 perms from age 8-11, so when my family and I watched this movie, My mother and I gasped when she said 'perm'. My father was looking at us wide eyed confused saying 'What?!'
The problem I have with this movie now, is after doing the musical, I keep waiting for the musical numbers only to remeber that they don't sing in this one.
I LOVE how open minded you guys are! I watch a lot of reaction videos and typically the guys who react to movies like this do not understand the perspective or anything and it's just so refreshing to see this. Bless!
44:29 It’s even worse when the boss/authority figure calls you in the office and whips “something” out. You were surprised when Elle’s law professor put his hand on her knee. Every female on the planet has that happen to her at least 5 times by age 25. Never expecting it. Always taken off guard. Career, job, hopes and plans dashed and you have to walk out and start all over again from scratch. In my day, the police did absolutely nothing.
i cried so many times during this, words can't describe how much i love this story and how much i love elle. you really should watch the musical based on this movie, it's really great and emment and elle's relationship is more elaborate and makes more sense but doesn't become the main focus of the story it's so amazing.
The bend and snap, the bend is obvious, draw attention to the butt. The snap, the weird hand position is up boop height and to the sides to give the chest a bit of a squeeze and lift for extra bounce. Thus the weird tyrannosaurus hands at the snap. Accentuate rear then chest, the bend and snap.
I love how you guys watch these type of chick flicks with respect for the (main) characters! Feels great to see a male audience without this prejudice that movies with female protagonists are "bad" or "just for girls" or without more to it than just pretty girls in pretty movies.
Fun facts: The nervous tall guy, David, is played by Oz Perkins, son of Anthony Perkins who played Norman Bates in “Psycho”. Also, the last two scenes (confrontation with Warner and the graduation) weren’t originally in the script; the movie initially ended with Elle winning the case, kissing Emmett and then a year later she and a now-blonde Vivian handing out pamphlets for the Blonde Legal Defense Fund they started together. Test audiences disliked the typical romcom ending and wanted closure with Warner and Elle so the writers rewrote the ending we have now. Reese Witherspoon had cut her hair by the time of the reshoots so in both those scenes she was wearing a wig and Luke Wilson had shaved his head for another movie so he wore a wig for the graduation scene. Both Reese and Matthew Davis (Warner) filmed their parts of the scenes in London due to Reese filming another movie at the same time and for the graduation scene, the rest of the main actors in the audience filmed their reactions in L.A.
18:55 I was just enjoying the commentary then he popped off with, "there's nothing wrong with stretch marks and a fat ass", well I didn't know that I was going to be indirectly complemented today 😳🖤
And the movie did it without demonizing men or putting a specific kind of woman down.
@@IceQueen975 it's perfection
@@IceQueen975 that's true. there's crappy men and women in the movie ofc but they're not one dimensional and it's not their characterization simply for the sake specifically promoting "girl power" but just rising above crappy people in general lol (esp when they underestimate girls)
@@IceQueen975 well they did sorta put Elle down at Harvard because of the blonde preppy stereotype
And getting rid of dumb blonde stereotypes
When they said she needed 175 and got 179 I always thought she barely passed. I just recently realized that the scale for the LSATs is 120 to 180. So getting a 179 means Elle basically got a perfect score after studying for like 1 semester!
My lawyer cousin loves this movie because “with that LSAT score, GPA and extra curriculars, not only did she get in, she’s there on scholarship.”
basically. You can only miss 1 or 2 questions and get a 179.
Yep, because she is very smart. She just puts her mental energy towards things considered frivolous by mainstream society (her fashion knowledge and people skills)
What an absolute machine. Love how much the movie flips the stereotypes on his head 😊 - Stef

First of all, fuck Sharpay and Regina. They are the opposite of support and feminism. They're both toxic bullies.

I love how this movie highlights how wrong certain stereotypes can be. it shows Enid, the student who has a "PHD in women's studies" yet still just as judgmental and nasty as everyone else is to Elle.
Exactly!!! This movie is just how to do Feminism Right 101
It's ironic that Enid seemed to fancy herself a feminist yet treated another woman poorly for having stereotypically feminine traits and interests because she doesn't value those things as valid and worthy.
@@ZariDV Agreed! This movie is definitely very underrated.

@@eugenemetayhas Yeah, I've always found it strange.
But... She already graduated in fashion? I don't really get it. In Germany you go to Uni for a bachelor's degree and then you can specialize and do a master's degree. But the subjects in which you graduate have to be somehow related, not like fashion and law.
@@moongirl8807 The us is a little more flexible. You can transfer schools
That actually makes much more sense - Stef

[jaw drop] I had never once noticed that, but holy hair color, it makes so much sense!
Although it does make Warner that much more of a dick if he was running a bicoastal 2-time.
I never saw it as him dating them at the same time, but more as him having Vivian in mind already as his backup plan when it was time to get serious. Since they already dated before, it might have seemed easy for him to get back together and seal the deal quickly.
I also thought him meeting his grandma might have set that into motion - pressure from his family to get going with his career suddenly increasing.

I am so here for this analysis 😄🙌 - Stef
I honestly love that her friends were at the trial. Like yeah they don't really understand what's going on but they're so supportive like hell yesss
I agree that Elle and Emmett should've just been framed as friends by the end of the movie, that would've been a bold move in 2004 lol. Although, their relationship in the broadway musical is elaborated on and its great
Yeah, in the musical their relationship is much more developed, and therefore they’re more...shippable?
And the actor for him in the musical is more likeable - and his chemistry with the lead is better

Dad got SO angry with Warner he screamed at the tv: "What a JERK! She WAS intelligent enough to enter law school and she better prove him wrong now or this movie is gonna make me very angry!". Dad cheered out loud and jumped off the sofa at the end of the film. lol

one thing I love with the party scene is that when Warner asks Elle why she's wearing a costume she doesn't rat Vivian's trick out to him, because she's a total class act.
also, Callahan's advance on Elle where he implies he'll give her a job in return for sexual stuff is called quid pro quo sexual harassment
Your right! She never mentioned it. Super classy.
made this comment on the first upload but want to do it again since it got some great replies the first time
One part I always love was Warner's "I need a Jackie Kennedy not a Marylin Monroe" bit because of just how wrong it it.
Glad you out this back up for the re-post 😊✌️ - Stef
I also feel like the whole “Jackie vs Marylin” was such a false dichotomy.
Someone mentioned that Warner may also have been seeing Elle on the side while having a relationship with Vivianne the entire time and if that’s true the comparison connects to the movie even more. I also love this information.
I love how even these two men whom neither of which appear to have ever had a perm in their life know the 24-hour no water rule. Lmao
Especially since perms aren’t all that popular especially for women their age
I'm really glad you lads looked deeper and didn't just make fun of this movie, it's actually pretty clever! We expect Elle to be shallow and dumb just because she's blonde and likes to shop but, isn't that expectation shallow and dumb in itself? This movie is iconic and deserves more love honestly
It’s an absolute bombshell of a film. Definitely one of my faves 😁 - Stef
Oh yeah, totally

Yes, the Elle/Emmett relationship is so much more believable in the musical, too!
Love your content!
the socratic method isn't used in law schools in the UK where law is an undergraduate degree
Actually not all sororities cost a lot of money, it probably just depends on the reputation and school where it’s at.
The frat across the street cost easily 5x that 🤷♂️
Only because I'm pedantic: law school gives you a Juris Doctor degree, which is a doctorate, not master's degree 😅
Also, let’s not sleep on the fact the CULA is meant to represent UCLA one of top/competitive universities of the country and our girl, Elle was rocking a 4.0 gpa. 🙌
Watching you guys react reminded me of this paragraph I read (sorry don't have the exact cite):
"In Legally Blonde, Elle only gets accepted because she's hot and sent a video, but she had a 4.0 and got a 179 (out of 180) on her LSATS.
I always saw it as "she's perfect candidate on the paper but look at the video essay she sent".

We absolutely will 😁 - Stef
OMG THERES A SEQUEL
so glad this got reuploaded, this movie is too iconic to be missed... still sad the original got taken down tho
I still say what I said before, what Warner said is equally insulting to both Jackie and Marilyn.
Exactly! Marilyn was a talented entertaininer, kind and intelligent while Jackie was a journalist before she met JFK and was a successful book publisher/editor later in life. There weren't just pretty faces
Sam’s tattoos are so ridiculously cool
As sad as I am for the reupload, I’m just happy there’s a reupload.
Edit: also heartbreak is temporary, but Gucci is forever ✌🏻😂
I KNOW. I was so confused when it was gone and I hasn’t gotten to watch it!
@@SusanaCanales1 I'm glad you got to watch it!
Oh lord! I’ve seen this movie 500 times and when you pointed out the furry phone, I just noticed the furry answering machine! That’s amazing. 😂
Oh damn, I missed that! Bloody brilliant 😂 - Stef
She was in on it with the pool boy because they were covering for her daughter because she’s the one that killed her father
Also just because she had never met Brooke it doesn't mean that she didn't see the pool boy hand brooke the drink.
“For someone so short she casts a lot of shade” THAT IS THE BEST QUOTE
14:00 "being bubbly doesn't mean dumb" omg LOUDER!
this is one of my all time favorite movies lol but that scene where she has to leave the classroom, reminds me of all my friends at uni that were business majors and their horror stories with the professors. my uni is known for its music school and it's business school, both of which are hard to get into (especially music), but I heard a lot of stories abt how professors bragged abt how hard their classes were and how "half of you won't be here in a week" and how some professors would lock the doors 5 mins before class starts and if you get there after you're SOL but you can only have 2 absences, the list goes on I meanwhile had a major in a liberal studies category so I never had this problem LOL
God damn, that’s so brutal 😨 - Stef
@@themoviebud1988 my roommate my first year there was a finance major and always so stressed out, I felt so bad for her. there's a project for all the business majors as well that's a 5 class grouping and if you pass any of the classes with lower than a B- you fail all 5 and have to retake them, it sucks
The movie that made every teenage girl get out of their "I'm not like other girls" phase
😂 😂 😂 I'm not stoned as I rewatch this reupload tonight but I have to say this, even if it may be very cheesy and fluffy, this film is such a feel good and uplifting film. Elle Woods is just such an iconic character for what she represents and how she goes about embracing her strengths and using it apply it to better herself and grow. Also, another Reese Witherspoon film I'd recommend for you both to watch is Cruel Intentions, which also stars Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Geller (who is ICONIC in it). No rush by the way, but definitely add it to your list for future videos!!
If I feel just a little down this my go to movie
Straight up. This movie is jam packed with good vibes. We’ve actually had Cruel Intentions on the list for a while, promise we’ll get around to it eventually 😅 - Stef
I really recommend watching Legally blonde: the musical. The whole thing was uploaded to RUclips by mtv so you shouldn't have copyright issued (not sure) I prefer the musical as it really explores a lot more of characters inner thoughts through song, also bruiser the dog is still in it!
Is Gucci forever? I don't know, but my Coach purse is 14 years old and still looks almost brand new. My cremated ashes will be buried in it.
Yes my grandmother give me all her gucci before die and are like almost 30 years and look amazing
A re-upload? A re-watch it is! I love this movie
Nice 😆 - Stef
Man that sucks you guys had to reupload, but since I'm on bed rest from an emergency surgery yesterday I'll have plenty of time to play the video on repeat lol
hope your doing ok from the surgery! :)
@@eveweiss5543 thank you!!!❤
Ectopic pregnancy, was super crazy!
@@destinymormance181 sorry you had to experience that. I have also had an ectopic a few years back but it didn't result in surgery. I had to take a drug to get rid of it instead. The whole thing sucks either way! I'm also on bed rest due to surgery but for my gallbladder!
@@sarahcampbell1115 I only ever heard of them, never knew anyone who had one so it was a real shock! Definitely sucky. I hope your gallbladder surgery heals up quick and painlessly❤
Oh damn! Hope you’re recovering well. Glad you like the video that much 😄 - Stef
Brooke's fucking newspaper blazer is the greatest piece of clothing I've ever seen in my life. Just wanted to drop this true feeling from my brain and heart.
Liked how your commentary was absolutely open minded and free of judgement, and it didn't feel forced at all. Loved the reaction, you won me over with your adequacy. Subscribed 🤗
We appreciate that 😋 - Sam
Overall I'm happy Elle realized what happened and pretty much got a career in law out of revenge. lol
Ah that makes much more sense now. Revenge is the best motivator after all 😆 - Stef
Wait..... Haven't we seen this already? Never mind. Copyright rules. Got it. I'll watch again anyway....
Dude, it literally says REUPLOAD in the title
@@thegammonator6503 "Dude", my notifications don't show the entire title. And once I click on the video, it automatically goes full screen and doesn't show the title at all. I also edited and added "never mind"..... So... Not sure why you're being rude and commenting with smart ass capitals...... My comment doesn't affect you in any way. Just showing my support, that I'll re-watch.... Scroll along.....
Thanks for rewatching. We really appreciate it 😊 - Stef
I had no problem watching it again either. Love these guys.
“There is nothing wrong with stretch marks and a fat ass.”
Omg I think I just came.
“Imagine having this many supportive friends” haha yup 😊😊😊😊😊
4:04 The best part is he got with another girl hours ago, the visit to his grandmother Elle's friends thought was getting a ring to propose
11:08 Ironically, there is a town named Harvard in the same state, but it's not where Harvard University is
This movie is absolutely ICONIC. It’s so good, and it sends SUCH a great message
Bless!
Much appreciated 😊 - Sam
For any one that does not know Elle is in Grad-School for the movie, but at the start in Cali she was undergrad.
elle woods was my first feminist icon, a great example of women supporting women
"Being bubbly doesn't equal dumb!" I 100% agree, and it needs to be pointed out more!
I love how open minded and non judgemental you guys are. It makes your videos so fun to watch!
6:42 2 little fun facts:
1. That was a scene from the Bold and the Beautiful
2. He WAS lying!
This movie is so iconic and I will never get bored of watching it
*audible gasp*" i object! " Is the best line in this movie. just Try and change my mind. I dare you.
It’s so much better than that! My favourite and puts it right in vivs face
With or without the song...I truly enjoyed this commentary. My top fave so far out of all the reacts I've seen from this channel.
Aw thanks bud! That means a lot to us. Definitely one of my favourite movies to do 😄 - Stef
"The heartbreak is temporary but Gucci is forever." Y'ALL. I laughed so hard.
