He's a touch more sympathetic in the book. I won't give too much away, but in the book something devastating happens near the end that's left out of the movie, making Andy's choice to leave Paris a lot more high stakes, and she handles it in a pretty hard to forgive way. So you can understand his reasoning for not wanting to be with her anymore. Andy is a touch less likable and checks out a lot more so in the book than in the movie. Also, if I remember right, they don't get back together.
Honestly Miranda is scary without even raising her voice once. I know some people see her as a villain but she just expects the best and I imagine being a female boss throughout her career she’s had to act more serious for other male bosses to take her seriously.
@@TomorrowWeLive that makes a lot of sense, I dont think ive ever seen that in women, Ive met men that do that. I think Meryl portrayed the respect much better than how it looks irl on men. I think its that Meryl doesnt waste time, the men (ive met and seen with the behavior) are too used to the power they hold socially and tend to waste time and just kinda force others to listen to their bullshit. Miranda never does that and it comands so much more respect, not just power.
To be honest I thought it was just another girly movie, but it's not, everyone who is in the high business world can understand and feel identify with the abuse and strategic situations in the workfield, Miranda represents perfectly all the Bob CEOs outhere.
I’m always so confused that Andi’s boyfriend gets angry over long working hours and her missing events. Like, dude, you are a cook, you should be understanding of long working hours 🤦🏻♀️
Right? He wants to be a chef ffs. If he ever gets there, there will be no weekends or holidays for him for most of his life, he'll work most days from 5/6 am (going to buy produce) to late into the night...
Yes! the New York restaurant scene is notoriously cut throat. The idea that he's never encountered a high-maintenance head chef or restauranteur and is baffled by Miranda is laughable. Also, how is he keeping what appear to be regular office hours? I know one sous chef and he keeps insane hours. Like he isn't home until around 3 AM under normal circumstances. Dude shouldn't even be home when she's getting in.
Preach! My cousin got promoted to head chef some years ago, to be fair he worked at a big hotel, but the he would regularly work 10-12h days 6 days a week and the only time he got of was the 1st 3 weeks of the year when the hotel would close for the yearly maintenance check.
On the first day of filming, Meryl Streep told Anne Hathaway, "I think you're perfect for the role. I'm so happy we're going to be working together." Then she paused and followed it up with, "That's the last nice thing I'll say to you." And it was.
@@DeathnoteBB I believe I've read somewhere that Streep is a bit method and had to keep a distance off camera to Hathaway and Blunt to really get into the cold, mean vibe. So she wasn't rude or anything but she avoided socializing with them during filming.
"Endearing"? You're kidding. She made fun of Andy to her face, never had anything nice or supporting to say about her, and was (all--in-all) a bitch. I found it funny watching this and thinking that anyone with a backbone would take this kind of treatment. As for Miranda, I would have given my left, uh, arm to have worked for her. I might have not lasted the day but the first time she threw her crap on my desk for me to hang up and/or put away, she would have worn the stuff the rest of the day.
This movie did make me realize how everyone is influenced by the fashion world whether you’re aware and keeping up or not. Even her older clothes are a type of conformity just not of the norm but purposely trying to be the “I’m not like other girls” girl.
@@themoviebud1988 exactly it’s a choice but it’s all still influenced by the people who make the clothes. And I think people forget that the fashion world makes the “normal” clothes and the “counter culture “ or “abnormal” clothes.
Yeah, my style is not really feminine but I love fashion because it does have a surprising effect on a lot of society. We shouldn’t judge what people wear, but the decision to wear certain things does show a bit about the person’s personality and how they make choices. Ex: Someone wearing bright colors that don’t match is more focused on being more appealing to themselves than caring about how society sees them. Or person who definitely planned their outfit to looked casual actually does care about what others see them and want to give off a specific vibe.
It really highlights our lack of choice thanks to large cooperations. If we all had the money we'd could have quality bespoke clothes made or tailored for us, but because most of us aren't that wealthy, our choices are generally op shops and fast fashion.
@@Lyiss_ yup. There’s a sequel and even after Andy MARRIES another man (not christian) and has his child, he suddenly becomes a “traitor” and she runs off with nate after running into him TEN YEARS LATER. Needless to say, I doubt anne or meryl will be signing on for that movie.
I don’t like the boyfriend at all. The whole premise is that he doesn’t support her at all and somehow he’s supposed to be the good guy. And he should be happy to watch her blossom.
Yeah I mean it can definitely be difficult to adjust when your partner goes through such a dramatic and rapid change though, and clearly he felt left behind and neglected. I do think they could’ve made his character more sympathetic however.
@@themoviebud1988 there is a fair point. When I was watching this commentary and listening to you I was like "oh yeah he is kind of selfish" ... but cmon so was she. She thought that she wants this kind of life and he tried to tell her that... and in paris she realized that on her own. That's why she said in the end that he was right. It was not about that he was jealous about her being successful. It was about that she was successful in a job she did not really want. That's why HIS promotion was ok because he was in a job that he really liked and wanted. By the end of the movie you just hated the guy for no reason.
@@ThomasLittle007 He was upset that she was successful in a job she did not really want? I'm confused as to how that validates him. Like the Budz said, she was doing this for a year to get ahead and move up in her chosen career (which she did), and a promotion in a job you don't like is still a good thing. If you love someone, you support them.
I just want to say Andy’s friends and boyfriend were so unsupportive, they judged her job until she gave them free shit. Like she had a chance to be so successful in fashion and it was disheartening to see them act like that.🤦🏾♀️🙄
I sort of agree but also she had the same opinion of working in fashion prior to working there. She also always made it clear that she wanted to be a 'proper' journalist
@@RandomSubjects I agree and I can't fault them too much because while she started wearing the uniform I never felt she had passion for it, she was just good at it. Hence the ending. So yeah they were unsupportive dicks but they were right. I think she leaves the industry even if they are her number one fans.
yess i love the devil wears prada! fun fact emily blunt actually met her husband john krasinksi because he was obsessed with this movie and had seen it 70 times and came up to her to talk about it at a restaurant haha :)
The boyfriend is a chef! He should understand working in a stressful environment and also working when other people have free time. That's in his job description.
@@themoviebud1988 Honestly from what I know rich people don't actually use clothes once then change, good quality branded clothes are expensive and you can always style it differently or archive or sell it if it doesn't fit you. I think the only reason we get the impression that rich people don't reuse clothes is because of the media, of course people are going to dress their best and differently in front of cameras.
I hate her friends and her boyfriend in this, and I feel like not even the movie itself realizes how shitty they are to Andy. I would've loved it if instead of apologinzing to the boyfriend she told him that even though she quitted, she doesn't regret a thing and that he (and her friends) should've been more supportive.
And what makes this film worse was that in the book, Andy breaks up with her boyfriend amicably in the end. The film tries to show that 'oh if you prioritize your career over these relationships you'll end up like the bitter Miranda' but somehow it gave double standards with how Nate's pissed because Andy isn't there whenever he wants her to be. Instead of trying to be supportive and understanding, he's more of an immature child who can't understand the concept of trying to meet your partner halfway because they have their own goals in life and both could compromise to make a relationship work. If you can't do that, break up!
It's funny how he moved to a whole different city at the first offer of a promotion and yet her missing a party and doing some overtime was supposed to be too much for their relationship to handle
@@themoviebud1988 apparently they do in the book sequel. That right there puts me off from reading them. Wardrobe is incredibly important, it gives a feel of authenticity and connectedness. I mean look at Schitt's Creek, theyre so believable in their roles as former rich people because of their authentic designer clothing, it tells the story in a way that exposition could never fully encompass.
@@Lafemmefutile I don't doubt that a lot of the clothes were given by the brands. I do know that the designers had to allow their clothes and accessories to be used in the film, so there could have been a deal there, lol. Also Meryl Streep was given her wardrobe after the movie ended, and she donated all of it for a charity auction and is said to have convinced Anne Hathaway to do the same
Right? Like, if this was my best friend my first question(s) would've been "Um, did he just kiss you without your okay? Are you okay? Do I need to call security?" Not "Omg you've CHANGED. How COULD you?!"
@@satinsleeves I don't think that would've been considered "assault" since Andi clearly liked it, she had a big smile on her face. Now in the "Easy A" situation with Olive and the one dude she went on a date with, he *assaulted* her because he kept kissing her when she said *NO* several times and pushed him away.
Hell the blond fashion guy even says they were gonna replace Miranda because she cost too much. You can be the _boss_ and they won’t let you get paid what you’re worth without a fight.
100% agree that the boyfriend part should have been left out. I hate how they always make women get together with the guy for it to be a happy ending. How about she is getting a new career and she is happy with herself? Ugh. Sorry. Rant over.
Yeah, it really shows the attitude of time was very much "career woman can never be happy'' and so the movie really felt it needed to somehow show Andy as being wrong for being overly dedicated to her job.
There's a point in showing Andy's relationship with Nate (the boyfriend) and her friends falling apart. It is simply what happens to many people as they "grow up" and figure themselves out. - Honestly, Andy is no longer the girl he fell in love with and who fell in love with him. And not many of the friends you had at 20 will be around when you're 40. It doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with either of them. But them having their little talk in the end was just unnecessary. You have broken up, so just move on. And personally I kinda do understand the boyfriend. While I want to be supportive, I would have a hard time dealing with my partner breaking almost every promise made to me. I guess I'm just not the kind of person, who can be with someone with that kind of job. - But I hope that I would be able to soldier though a year, even though somewhere in the back of my mind, I would worry that it wouldn't stop - ever.
One of the things that drives me crazy about the boyfriend is that he's a chef in a nice New York restaurant. He probably works constantly and is upset that she missed his birthday like a child.
Yes! This drove me nuts. And he really was a big baby about the whole birthday thing! With my family and friends we very rarely celebrate our birthdays on our actual birthdays. You just need to pick a day when everyone is free. It's not a tragedy!
right? if he was upset bc she completely forgot would be one thing, but to be that upset bc she couldn't be there like damn, just celebrate on another day, it's not that big of a deal
@Ks exactly. maybe if he was like turning 30 and then they were planning something big, maybe an event that their families were invited or they were traveling somewhere and then she cancelled last minute, that might have been kinda acceptable, but what actually happened was just embarrassing
Right. Which chef has the time to celebrate his own birthday? Plus, the way he casually talks on the phone with his girlfriend while he's working... So realistic
Originally that line from Meryl Streep was "Everybody wants to be me." then last minute she changed it to "Everybody wants to be us". Which made it so much more impactful.
I just realised. Miranda smiled for Andy. Miranda has only smiled once at someone else's work. Meaning that Andy was so good at her job that even Miranda had to smile at the rarity. I have never realised that tidbit. She didn't even smile at Nigel when she somewhat praised him in the meeting
I struggle a lot to find movie commentary channels that I enjoy because a lot of times they don't pay attention to the movie to try to make unnecessary jokes or they cut out important parts of it and it ends up being boring, but I have to say after watching just a couple of videos from you guys I already subscribed and I watched it the second I saw it came out,I love that you don't look down on these movies just because it's a so called chick flick, the movies you guys have been choosing are all great and the commentary is so entertaining!!I hope more people find the channel so you guys can grow even more, keep up the good work!!
It's sad that any film with female protagonist or "feminine" interests is seen as "chick flicks" and seen as less and stupid. ModernGurlz did a great video on this topic, it really opens up your eyes about how people immediately categorize films like these into the chick flick "genre" even though they all actually have different genres and the only thing they really have in common, is it's mostly about female protagonists. Chick flicks need more love and respect from the general public honestly, there are some fantastic films that doesn't get talked about enough, especially this one.
Thank you so much! We’ve been trying to make sure we provide enough context so it’s easier to follow for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie or maybe it’s been a while since they saw it. It probably helps that we both have a lot of female influence in our lives haha. I don’t even really see this as a “chick flick”, it’s just female lead 🤷♂️ to me it’s basically a sports movie but for fans of fashion 😂 We really appreciate your feedback and support! - Sam
Yeah, I agree. Always thought “chick flicks” were specifically romance movies and even then I never understood why that was supposed to be a bad thing. I just like movies and probably half of the ones I like are lead by women 🤷♂️ but they’re all different kinds of movies so idk lol 😆 - Sam
I think this movie is a lot more universal than we think it is. It’s like Mean Girls. Like… almost everyone can agree that it’s great it has at least lots of merit!
The pay may be bad but free designer clothes is a plus. Where did Nigel even find the clothes to fit her anyway? Sample size is smaller than a 6; he really went above and beyond.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 they were all from the runway closet and we find out later Andy went down to a size 4 but you’re right she probably bought a few items herself and Nigel probably payed for some stuff too
Those clothes are just sample items that are done used in the past photoshoots and ended up in a "stockroom". Since Nigel has access to that room, he sort of let andy borrow those clothes, which has to be returned if she quits the job. Thats why in the end of the movie, she called Emily to return all the clothes she used at work
@@RedRoseSeptember22 she couldn't buy that stuff herself, bc the assistant's salary in this industry doesn't allow you to do that. It's a reality. Also it's the fact from the original book.
Yep, someone else gave a plausible thought that because he’s going to Boston and she’s staying in New York that maybe they don’t end up back together. I’m choosing to believe that 😂 - Sam
Funny story, when I was in HS I got a job at a nice retail place and all my friends turned on me when I started dressing better because I was required to buy the clothes and wear them to work. I was more confident and wore more makeup. They didn't like that too much. LOL

Meryl Streep said that Miranda’s voice, her soft spoken manner was inspired by Clint Eastwood. He’s soft spoken. Meryl saw how he commanded respect and how people leaned in to listen to him.
I wanted Andy to say, "I AM serious about my career. How is stabbing my mentor in the back a good career move? If you want me to go to Paris instead of Emily, tell her yourself."
I also feel like that was giving Andy a responsibility that was in no way hers, but Miranda's, and it was pretty cruel. Miranda didn't want to deal with how disappointed Emily would be, so she pushed the responsibility onto Andy, covering it up with a teaching moment.
@@themoviebud1988 simple, she would have been fired, Andy is the protagonist but in that industrie she is no one, basically all of the employees there let her know that the only one that matters is Miranda
I feel like Miranda would have just pointed out that ''if Emily is your mentor then you're aiming too low'' (implying that Andy should be looking up to Miranda and only Miranda because everyone else is disposable).
The reason they had her character get back with the boyfriend, reminds me of the ending of Little Women when the publisher told Jo March that her leading lady "better be married" by the end of the novel. All the personal growth, misadventures, and independence is fine but she better be married by the end of it lol I don't know if it's the "happily ever after" stereotype to end up with some type of love interest but that's how a lot of movies are.
I think they agreed to be just friends or more so of an open end. She wasn’t Andy, the happy go lucky girl who was madly in love with Nate to the point where that was her personality. Neither was she Andrea, the fashionista with the attitude and putting her career before the other. Nothing wrong with either of them but there had to be a balance. I think in the end she realised she didn’t want either
the part that shits me is, if Anne's character had been writing for a "serious" paper and was working on an expose or something, the boyfriend would have been supportive, but because it was "only" fashion he didn't see its value, and therefore didn't see it as a "real job" (I always hated him so much 🙄)
I think the reason Miranda chose Andy over Emily is because Andy continually stepped up and went above and beyond. Emily, well, stayed in her lane. But also it kind of makes sense, Andy wants to be a journalist. You don’t become a good journalist by cowing to authority and doing what is expected of you. Which also would explain why she had a hard time settling in to the job.
The clothes ("Andy" wears) are borrowed from the Magazine (and returned) when they are not gifted. As for friends show they had rent control and got the place for a steal (Their Grandma is supposedly still leaving there).
@@themoviebud1988 in the book they're old (as in last season's) clothes that are given away to the employees when The Closet is periodically cleaned out

Emily Blunt in this is such a mood. I have definitely channeled her "I love my job, I love my job..." mumble on shitty days 🤣 Also I just wanna say how nice it is to see two guys not dunking on films like this as "chick flick shit" and understanding the problems girls sometimes go through coz of heir gender, or are unafraid to call people, especially guys, out on douchey behaviour. Props! 👌
I'm totally on Emily's side (even if she is harsh). This is her dream job, her industry, loves fashion etc. and is working her way up. In comes Andie, COMPLETELY unprepared for the interview - doesn't know who she is going to be working for, or anything about the industry - and gets the job and gets to skip to the top of the ladder (okay she works hard too, but only after Nigel kicks her butt into a better attitude).
The only problem I have with Emily is her arrogance. She always treated Andy like sh*t and then suddenly "you should have said no!" Why the hell should she jeopardize her job for someone who had never even been kind to her? Go to hell.
I love the brief scene of when Andy asks Miranda a genuine question and Miranda gives her the first real honest answer. That’s when you know she finally respects her.
I get what you guys are saying about this being a 1 year gig for Andy but the thing is once you get in that mindset of “I have to do this, I have to prioritise it above all else” it’s incredibly hard to ever escape it and move on. I genuinely don’t think Andy would have left after the year ended and I’m not saying that this is a bad thing as long as it is actually her choice that she made after being honest with herself whether this is her new dream or not and she just enjoys the challenge. However, I don’t think staying would have been healthy for her if she continued to feel like everything is out of her control and that she “had no choice” like she was thinking (or at the very least saying) for the majority of the movie Still I completely agree that her friends should have been more supportive or at the very least tried to have an honest conversation about their worries instead of guilt tripping her while barely making any effort to understand the changes she’s gone through or recognise her new qualities (such as her newfound drive to excel)
I disagree with the idea that she wouldn't have left. She lost her friends and her boyfriend, so no ties or influence from them, and still chose to walk away based on a moral dissonance. She made that decision for herself when she saw what she would have to become and I think she could have and would have done that without the shitty behavior of her bf and friends.
@@daddybendover69 But I think losing her connection to people close to her was a precursor to realizing the sacrifices that job / industry requires. Regardless of their "support" or not, when you're alone, a career isn't going to sustain you. It's never, ever ever going to be the essence that keeps you sane, happy, and fulfilled. Very rarely do people get to have "careers". There was never a guarantee that Andy would leave, or be successful in another industry.
I truly think Andy could have gone very far in that industry - she’s the type of people who learn fast and have drive. She literally blew Emily out of the water in mere months, going from negative 100 to 1000. Miranda rewards this type of energy and she only complimented Nigel and Andy. The shows portrayed Andy with still some idealism and I believe this is her first job which may be why she reacted impulsively and quit that way. Realistically though, you don’t quit because a higher up who makes 100Ks more than you got bumped for a job. You focus and get the max of what you can do. I would have sticker for a good 3 years to get that rock solid resume, publish a bunch of articles on fashion to flex her muscles, build her rep and bounce to the NYTs. Under a strategic boss, you learn strategy. I learned this by watching all these kung fu movies and also by working under several incompetent or mean bosses.
I would not have hired Andy if I knew she would be leaving after one year. As an employer there is a lot of time and expense in training for that person to leave. If she doesn't have commitment she should go elsewhere.
What angers me is that her friends weren’t just fine accepting the gifts but letting her be miserable at her job, they didn’t start really pressuring her about until she began enjoying it and doing better than before.
I really disliked how unsupportive her friends were as well but when Andy was flirting with that guy while still being in a relationship I was on her friends side.
She only flirted because things were going to shit with Nate, not justifying it, but she probably wasn't sure where their relationship was headed at that point. Flirting isn't cheating either, it's only when you *act* on it, then it's *cheating* .
@@RedRoseSeptember22 also in real life, sometimes you really click with someone and are just trying to be nice (like me) but then you are told that what you are doing is flirting... Some people (like me) don't understand the line because they just try very hard to be liked by people (because they struggle socially). Not saying that that's the film's premise though, I just felt like commenting 🤣🤣🤣
I think that the beginning shots aren't so much like "she's not like other girls" more so like establishing how the opposite she is in what the type of woman to work for that industry is. How she is not going to do well for her job interview as she doesn't understand fashion in the beginning.
I understand your point and agree, but up until Nigel gives her her big makeover... she’s a total cunt about fashion and does behave like “I’m not like other girls”.
When I first started the movie I thought that working for Runway was about the connection with the upper-class society that will open a lot of doors for Andrea, but by the end of the movie, I realized the reason behind the saying "working for Miranda for a year and you can work for anyone" that they kept repeating was about work ethics: you must find solutions for every task given to you, there's only plan A, and never take "no" for an answer. That's why other companies will be more likely to hire Andrea after Runway. And that stays true for Anna Wintour's Vogue magazine as well.
This is such an underrated movie. I'm not a fashionista in any way, nor do I care much about the clothes I wear. But this movie is a great character study. It's so much more than just a movie about a girl finding herself through the power of fashion. Rather It's about a woman who finds her voice through an unexpected journey of self discovery. And two people forming a deep connection, despite the superficial surroundings that brings them together
Yeah, as someone who's nicest sense of fashion is literally their mom's entire surviving wardrobe from the 70's and greatly dislikes the fashion lifestyle, my mom and I both loved this movie. Every once in a while I binge some chick flickish not-so-guilty pleasures and this always ends up in the queue lol
Y'all should react to The Impossible, Moulin Rouge or The Hunger Games to get your Stanley Tucci fix. I think Emily has her own way of taking notes that way she can keep up with what Miranda says.
The Lovely Bones is absolutely fantastic, as well. He played someone so creepy and so sinister so well and convincingly. The way he talked about playing that role in interviews is so intriguing.
Whenever people complain about someone else being wealthy that just tells me they are jealous because it isn't them. I'm especially disgusted by people who justify robbing the rich just because they're rich. WTF? Just because someone happens to have money doesn't mean they deserve to have things stolen from them nor does it change the fact that they worked for everything they have. Anyone with his attitude is a garbage human in my eyes and deserves to suffer.
As someone who nows interviews people at my work, WHY would someone eat an onion bagel before an INTERVIEW. Andy's attitude for this interview and the start of her job was atrocious. Stanley Tucci gently calling her directly out on her bullshit is one of my favorite parts of the movie.
Does anyone think those two belts were identical and everyone else was too afraid to speak up? She lucked out with the Harry Potter book, but she should have cheated, printed off a bunch of fan fiction. The twins wouldn’t know the difference. The apartment in Friends belonged to one of their grandmothers, and it was rent controlled, meaning rent was frozen at where it was in the 1940’s (50s? 60s?) or whenever they first got the apartment. If they sold it to someone else, then rent could be raised.
Those belts were the same color but not identical. It’s like saying a red circle and a red square are identical. We were supposed to think everyone else is delusional and she was right, but it was the opposite.
@@ElleKayGee since they were talking about shades of blue, that’s what I’m referring to being identical. But if you want to get pedantic about it, they didn’t have a different pattern and we couldn’t see the buckles, so they were both the same belt fabrics of the same color.
I agree about the Harry Potter book, that makes sense haha. And the rent control thing also makes sense cause I’ve heard of people in NY with that exact situation. The belt tho, I thought the buckles were what differentiates them so I was definitely confused about the colour discussion? But, yeah, they definitely showed the buckles - Sam
@@chrissmith6097 Yes the color is the same, but since that is the case the only determining factor is the shape/buckle otherwise there would be no choice. I believe the purpose of the scene is to show the difference in perspective from those in fashion and someone who doesn’t care about it. Someone who doesn’t care only sees the color, while the rest were looking at the whole belt (despite the color discussion).
@@themoviebud1988 (looks harder). Ok. One belt buckle matches the fabric and the other kinda blends with the yellow diamonds on the girl’s shirt. I had to zoom in on a picture to really see that though. (Zooming in I also see the one on the left is slightly wider and possibly a shade lighter). I still maintain it would be hard for Andi to see that from across the room. I had an all utilities paid rent controlled studio apartment in Los Angeles for a couple years. It wasn’t the best apartment but I liked living there.
I can't understand why she gets back togheter with the boyfriend, he was so unsupportive as soon as she got a demanding job! Is being a journalist not demanding? Did she just assumed the guy that broke didn't understand what she had to do for a job was going to be ok now because it was demanding but not "superficial"? She should have stayed alone at the end

Andy's friends are friends that I used to have in my early twenties, they are happy when you start to do well but if you do too well and no longer can meet them at a drop of a hat, your the bad person.
One thing I love about this movie, is that it taught me that caring about your appearance isnt a bad thing. First impressions are everything and dressing like a slouch doesn't make you "better" than someone. Also the boyfriend is a man child, boyfriends come and go, but a career that beneficial could set Andy up for life. I would never throw away a job for a man I'm not even married to🤨
Emily is more relatable than Andrea, at least to me. She's working at a job she loves that makes her crazy, and has to deal with a brand new co worker that clearly doesn't want to be there but makes an impression on the boss because of that. That's a very relatable position to be in.
I would love to see you guys watch more 80’s movies such as “The outsiders”, “Lost Boys”, “Dead Poets Society”, “With Honors”, “Weird Science” and “Bill and Teds excellent adventure”
I love how you hated Nate’s character. He is the real antagonist. Why can’t he be a supportive boyfriend?! Doesn’t he want his gf to be successful?! Like wtf. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
The only time I didn't like the boyfriend is when they broke up and he said how she didn't like her job and didn't seem supportive... He was annoyed at the birthday thing because she didn't say she'd be late, she just left him hanging, I'd be really annoyed if my partner didn't communicate that they wouldn't be there either. Also when he said I liked your old clothes I didn't take it as a negative I saw it just as I like you no matter what.
the wonderful writing of emily is exactly why the writing of the boyfriend does not work. emily is mean for a reason - she’s watching someone rise above her that is entirely inexperienced, while emily had been working herself to the bone to get where she was. andi’s boyfriend is unreasonably upset to see his partner thriving
You two are really great, honestly. There are two of you and you have pretty significant discussions while watching, but you manage to not miss things, including small nuances. I seriously applaud your ability to pick up what the movie means to show & also maybe things the movie unintentionally shows. You have a knack for seeing the characters/situations as mostly as gray (not black & white). Plus, you always call out characters the movie maybe wants you to sympathize with but are actually kinda toxic. You also don't often have a bias against something just because you can't relate directly; you find a way to relate. I just wanted to brag for y'all~~~^.^
Thanks so much for all that feedback Torie! The secret is we pause a lot and talk over montages. Thank god for montages... 😂 We try to do these movies justice so it’s nice that gets noticed 😋 - Sam
@@themoviebud1988 Pass those notes on to some of the other reactors. They talk through iconic scenes, talk over important dialogue that advances the plot and then say things like "whats going on", "this doesn't make any sense" , "why did he do that" and " I don't understand what's going on".
Emily's pal is played by the supermodel Gisele Bundchen. In the original script, Miranda said, "Everyone wants to be _me."_ It was decided the line should rope Andie in to make her reaction more about her own decisions, instead of about Miranda being a monster. Love this film, your reaction was great to watch! :)
"Nate... that's all." was followed up in my mind by that Mean Girls line "You are just like a clone of Miranda." xD This is one of my favourite movies of all time, such great writing and acting. Also I can't watch anything with Simon Baker without thinking of the Mentalist but that's just me :D
god every time i see that scarf guy hes just "the mentalist" to me lmao its the only thing ive ever seen him in and i had a little bit of a crush when i was like 14 and now i cant see him as anything else lmaoooo
Some people say that Stanley Tucci's character is based on Andre Leon Talley, who worked at Vogue with Anna Wintour for 20+ years. I read his autobiography and it would make sense even though Andre said the movie got some things wrong (of course its just a film but the woman who wrote the book did work as Anna's assistant).
This is actually really heartwarming. I dunno how old y'all are, but I was the target audience when this movie came out. Hearing you call out the boyfriend, the friends, the way we're supposed to pit the fashionistas against the "regular" girls, honestly the fact that y'all are doing this movie at all is kind of healing. We have come a lot farther in 15 years than it feels sometimes. I still have my own scars and baggage from the kind of stuff I internalized back then that I am not going to air out on a forum like youtube, but I just wanted to say that your perspectives had an impact on me, and not just the ones from this commentary either. It makes me feel like the struggle not to normalize things that are unacceptable will be worth it in the end. 💖 thanks a bunch for being you
8:24 Giselle Bundchen, she’s a Brazilian model who was quite famous in the 2000s (I rewatch her scenes multiple times just cause I love when I spot a Brazilian anywhere 😂)
Anne Hathaway is just a damn bombshell in this movie her and Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt are an iconic trinity! Andy deserved a damn better friend circle and boyfriend since they were just so unsupportive every time.
Another iconic trinity of the acting business is Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie. They wowed in the film "Bombshell" and I was amazed by the efforts of the team in hair and makeup to transform Charlize Theron into Megyn Kelly and Nicole Kidman into Gretchen Carlson.
Aww, was going to second this but then realized you didn't say Ella Enchanted. Enchanted is fun times, and I love Amy, but Ella Enchanted has more Ann Hathaway AND she sings in it. ❤
Her friends and boyfriend give me such ugh vibes through all this. Like, yeah, it can be sucky when friends can't be there for things due to work, but, that's just how life can be for adults. Sometimes, other thing have to take priority, and that's doubly or triply true in a super high-stress job like high-end fashion

That's why WE hated him. And her other friend.
@@veetowanna1515 All of her "friends" sucked.
And nobody interrupts Miranda. Meryl Streep acted exactly that way. She never raised her voice, but made people listen, even while whispering.
Yeah, cause she commands respect 😊 - Sam
Honestly Miranda is scary without even raising her voice once. I know some people see her as a villain but she just expects the best and I imagine being a female boss throughout her career she’s had to act more serious for other male bosses to take her seriously.
She said that she based that on Clint Eastwood.
Dude shouldn't even be home when she's getting in.
ruclips.net/video/tOng9WEW0Mk/видео.html
The writers probably think service industry jobs are easy and low maintenance cause they never had to work 14 hours straight on their feet.

Oh yeah, if fashion is your choice of appearance (for better or worse) then Ofc everyone is at least somewhat influenced by it - Sam
Agreed. It shows how much work, thought and effort can go into an industry.
The book makes it clear that Andi didn't get back with her boyfriend. They just had a heart-to-heart and moved on.

I hate her friends and her boyfriend in this, and I feel like not even the movie itself realizes how shitty they are to Andy. The film tries to show that 'oh if you prioritize your career over these relationships you'll end up like the bitter Miranda' but somehow it gave double standards with how Nate's pissed because Andy isn't there whenever he wants her to be.

I'd like to add that this movie's budget was of 35 million dollars that mostly went into the casts wardrobe
That makes sense haha - Sam
Wardrobe is incredibly important, it gives a feel of authenticity and connectedness. I mean look at Schitt's Creek, theyre so believable in their roles as former rich people because of their authentic designer clothing, it tells the story in a way that exposition could never fully encompass.
They could have rented that shit though. I bet the brands advertising in it made up for it!

Not even remotely true. Of the $35M, only $100K was budgeted for wardrobe, and in the end $1M was spent on it. Nowhere close to “most” of the budget.

"I will not apologize."
Absolutely agree!
THIS

I also feel like that was giving Andy a responsibility that was in no way hers, but Miranda's, and it was pretty cruel. Miranda didn't want to deal with how disappointed Emily would be, so she pushed the responsibility onto Andy, covering it up with a teaching moment.
Classic upper management move though. Turn the underlings on one another and continue doing their greedy and selfish bidding.
I like how the actor who played the boyfriend also hates the character as much as we do lol
Women are only encouraged to have a career until it impacts their boyfriend or husband’s life in any way. She wasn’t home early enough to tuck him in
They didn't get back together
I think they agreed to be just friends or more so of an open end. She wasn’t Andy, the happy go lucky girl who was madly in love with Nate to the point where that was her personality. Neither was she Andrea, the fashionista with the attitude and putting her career before the other.
Nothing wrong with either of them but there had to be a balance. I think in the end she realised she didn’t want either
the part that shits me is, if Anne's character had been writing for a "serious" paper and was working on an expose or something, the boyfriend would have been supportive, but because it was "only" fashion he didn't see its value, and therefore didn't see it as a "real job" (I always hated him so much 🙄)
"What f*cking title did you win for that ring?"
The title of being Stanley Tucci.
Most valued Tucci 😆 - Stef
I think the reason Miranda chose Andy over Emily is because Andy continually stepped up and went above and beyond. Emily, well, stayed in her lane. But also it kind of makes sense, Andy wants to be a journalist. You don’t become a good journalist by cowing to authority and doing what is expected of you. Which also would explain why she had a hard time settling in to the job.
The whole reason to why Andi got the job was to advance her career. 1 year at Runway is almost like 5 years anywhere else.
The clothes ("Andy" wears) are borrowed from the Magazine (and returned) when they are not gifted. As for friends show they had rent control and got the place for a steal (Their Grandma is supposedly still leaving there).
Ah, okay that makes sense - Stef

I'm totally on Emily's side (even if she is harsh). This is her dream job, her industry, loves fashion etc. and is working her way up. In comes Andie, COMPLETELY unprepared for the interview - doesn't know who she is going to be working for, or anything about the industry - and gets the job and gets to skip to the top of the ladder (okay she works hard too, but only after Nigel kicks her butt into a better attitude).
The only problem I have with Emily is her arrogance. She always treated Andy like sh*t and then suddenly "you should have said no!"
Why the hell should she jeopardize her job for someone who had never even been kind to her? Go to hell.
Simon baker - the mentalist.
Yeah, I knew he was familiar haha - Sam
However, I don’t think staying would have been healthy for her if she continued to feel like everything is out of her control and that she “had no choice” like she was thinking (or at the very least saying) for the majority of the movie
Still I completely agree that her friends should have been more supportive or at the very least tried to have an honest conversation about their worries instead of guilt tripping her while barely making any effort to understand the changes she’s gone through or recognise her new qualities (such as her newfound drive to excel)
If she doesn't have commitment she should go elsewhere.
and i totally agree with leaving the part of the boyfriend out, making them get back together was so unnecessary ugh

I can understand becoming attracted to someone else while you're in a shitty relationship, but you're right, that part was pretty sketchy - Stef
She only flirted because things were going to shit with Nate, not justifying it, but she probably wasn't sure where their relationship was headed at that point. Flirting isn't cheating either, it's only when you *act* on it, then it's *cheating* .
@@RedRoseSeptember22 and she did act on it. She cheated (whereas in the book it was just flirting).
@@TomorrowWeLive She didn't cheat, she had already split up with Nate.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 also in real life, sometimes you really click with someone and are just trying to be nice (like me) but then you are told that what you are doing is flirting...
Right? Also, this is New York. Broadway, Banks, Fashion, Real Estate, Television Networks, fashion of some design / style is expected to a degree.
That's totally fair. Hadn't considered it that way 🤔 - Stef
Exactly correct
This is such an underrated movie. I'm not a fashionista in any way, nor do I care much about the clothes I wear. But this movie is a great character study. It's so much more than just a movie about a girl finding herself through the power of fashion. Rather It's about a woman who finds her voice through an unexpected journey of self discovery. And two people forming a deep connection, despite the superficial surroundings that brings them together
One of the best 'coming of age' movies ever
Yeah, as someone who's nicest sense of fashion is literally their mom's entire surviving wardrobe from the 70's and greatly dislikes the fashion lifestyle, my mom and I both loved this movie.
