But she wasnt. She wasn't pursuing journalism. She was pursuing Mirandas wishes.
The point is that Andy refused to stop and assess and constantly justified her poor actions and the poor character she was creating in herself.
But all it would lead to is her becoming lile Miranda herself...a miserable human being. Even Nigel was miserable. And everyone saw it besides Andy.

I absolutely HATE the end when Nate (the boyfriend) says that he got a promotion to be the Head Chef at a famous restaurant in Boston........ so HE gets to move up in his career and get better jobs and work absolutely crazy hours and expects her to be happy for him. But when SHE was taking her career seriously and actually applying herself to her job (for just one year, nothing more - she would be able to jump to any job she wanted after working for Miranda for 1 year), he was a complete asshole and a drag. Whining and complaining the whole way through and hindering her path to success. He's so ANNOYING and childish.

He was chosen to be a Sous Chef. That's not Head Chef. Smh.
Also it was clearly indicated that despite his job, he maintains a consistent character aka being true to himself
Andy isn't there for a month and begins to turn into someone that the people who know her the most aren't cool with.
Andy believes she's the same person.WE see her internal conflict...but she doesn't show that to anyone else and begins behaving around them like a different person.
Also it's fair to think that both Andy and Nate support the food industry to some extent but at the beginning of the movie are not supportive of the fashion industry.
Imagine if you fell for your boyfriend because he's considerate, is a devoted one-woman man, is strong but emotionally tender.
Now imagine he becomes executive assistant to Andrew Tate. But wait! This will help his blogger/RUclips career. It'll just be a year.
And then he begins to change. Slowly at first. You gonna be supportive?

@@thedappermagician6905 Except Miranda Priestly isn't Andrew Tate. Miranda's a practical businesswoman. Andrew's a straight-up rat. And change is inevitable. Andy became professional after a month working under Miranda, alongside Emily and Nigel. She was on her way to success and would've been way beyond that if she saw it as that. But she was conflicted, afraid to take the risks Miranda took in order to build an empire. Her and Nate are different, and he wasn't a catch anyway.

Miranda is CLEARLY a rat. No one likes her. Not really. And she knows it.
I honestly think you missed my whole point which would be indicative of the state of the world we're in.
I'm trying to communicate that this kind of success, these actions people take, for money, for status and prestige and recognition...is at it's core Bad. Evil. Anti-social. This is NOT how a good and spiritually balanced person operates.
Sure Andy learned some skills that can help her here and there. But she was losing that which made her like herself and those whom she likes, like her. Andy knows she is good. She knows that what the people at the magazine do is abhorrent and indicative of poor character. If you like her so much, trust her appraisal. That's why the end of the movie is a happy/bittersweet one. Because Andy recognized what she would become if she stayed with Miranda, and Miranda herself helped her see it. That which Nate and her friends mentioned but she denied was brought out into the light by Miranda and Andy could see how she had deceived herself. How they ALL deceive themselves and she chose to be better.

@@thedappermagician6905 This (partially). I mean Miranda is somewhat of a good person..One example, she worries about how her divorce (and all the press about it) will affect her kids. The book goes into even more detail too, Andi's mom gets into a car accident while she's in Paris and Andi has to decide whether to stay in Paris or fly home. I don't get why people are defending Miranda and this "success at the cost of everything else" mindset either. It's not healthy by any stretch. Especially since Miranda threw her "good friend" Nigel totally under the bus to get her own way.

This movie always sparks debate between Andy and her boyfriend. His point was that he just wanted her to admit that she was changing, because Andy kept being in denial. It's fine that Andy was actually becoming more interested in fashion and working for Miranda, but she kept saying she's still the same person etc., and she wasn't. So that's why he told her he doesn't care what she does as long as she has integrity. However, he was also in the wrong because he didn't like the change and wanted her to stay the same. The hypocrisy is that while she's pursuing a career in journalism and has to intern at Runway for a good reference letter, she gets shit for it, but when he gets a job as a sous-chef in another city, then it's all fine and dandy. I think there was just a huge lack of communication between them. She needed to be honest with herself, her boyfriend, and her friends. He needed to be more supportive and stop making her feel bad for "changing", as we all do and that's not a bad thing at all.

But a thing that needs to be said is, if you are in a relationship, even if changing as a person is not wrong, if your partner doesnt want to be with the new person you are becoming, that's ok too.
But andy didnt want to accept she was changing and also didnt want to break up with him. And that's why at the end she came back.

  • @alvaropca
    @alvaropca 3 месяца назад +10

Excuse me, but I have some things to say:
    1. You can hate your job, which is how the whole thing started. But then after she talked to Nigel she realized that she wasn't giving it her all, she was just going to work and doing the bare minimum. She's smart but she wasn't trying to do great at her work: she didn't research anything about Miranda or the magazine, she didn't try to learn once she was there... she didn't even know how to spell GABBANA! But after the talk with Nigel she decided to try to do better. She knew her boss valued their appearance, so she changed her appearance; she learned how her boss wanted things to be done, so she anticipated them and did them without her asking for them; she started learning the ropes... And that takes time. When you start doing good at your job, your personal life always suffers because you can't have everything. She knew this was a temporary position, only for a year... And she excelled so much that she replaced Emily in under a year which is HUGE!!! So she was going to be in a position to further her own dreams: to be a writer for a major publication.
    2. As a boyfriend, if my partner hates their job I would tell them to quit and look for something more fulfilling. If they are only doing it for a year to further their career, I would say SUCK IT UP and do it for a year. I would UNDERSTAND that my partner doesn't have time to do a lot of things because their job is AWFUL and it never stops. She's an assistant, she will get calls at all ours and have to attend events as part of her job...
I don't understand the friends tossing her phone around like teenagers. Like... This is my job, I just got you presents from MY JOB, and you're messing with it. It's MY BOSS calling so I need to answer the phone. That's not cool under any circumstances to me. I would get really angry if any of my friends did that to me. And her boyfriend gets mad because he missed his birthday? How many birthdays will he have? can't they celebrate tomorrow? Is it so hard to understand that SHE HAD TO WORK? It wasn't her choice, it's just stupid. It's a birthday party... You can just have something special the next day or something... You don't need to make her feel guilty because she had to work. Just because your job has regular hours doesn't mean that she has to have regular hours too... AND HE KNOWS THAT. And the killer for me is that she had an opportunity to go meet someone who could further her career, she had the opportunity to talk to and editor of a major publication and she turned it down to go to her boyfriend's birthday... And the boyfriend was an A-HOLE to her. That's stupid. If that was my girlfriend I would've been like: GO FOR IT BABE, DONT WORRY ABOUT ME, GO AFTER YOUR DREAMS, MAKE THEM HAPPEN. What kind of boyfriend gets mad because her girlfriend had to work on his bday?
    3. I don't understand why people don't hate Nate with a passion. He is so toxic. You don't need to like her job, she's the one doing it. And she is allowed to hate something at first and then find parts of the job that she likes. She doesn't get fashion, but she's smart and she knows how to kill it at any job. She likes Nigel, she likes Emily even though they banter... She even appreciates some of Miranda's qualities. She hated her job because she didn't care about it, once she tried to do a good job... She cared, and that made her look for the things she liked.
If a relationship doesn't grow with you, you need to break it. He wasn't at all supportive.

This entire movie works around the effects of effective and ineffective communicaiton. Andy has a clear goal of 'getting through' this fashion job that she is very dismisive of until she get that little heat to heart with NIgel who essentially tells her to grow up and be an adult. Up until this point Andy and her friends have the same perspective of the fashion industry. Nigels speech reminds Andy that at least for some, and more importantly for those that are sucessful in their role, their job isn't just a 'job'. So Andy changes her perspective; her friends have no need to change their perspective and Andy is never seen communicating her changed perspective so her friends are only hurt and confused that it seems as if the industry they all made fun of is changing their friend without their friend noticing (and what friend wouldn't be concerned about that?).
This is the missed communicaiton and overreaction. Andy's friends should have been more supportive and not antagonistic, BUT the check ins they do give show misguided concern for their friend who has clearly NOT been communicating her changed perspective with them. All they see is Andy changing clothes, buying expesive gifts, losing touch, and missing events that should have been important to her.
Andy on the otherside, is overwhelmed trying to give her all to the job and focuses so much she does leave her friends behind. its not just the missed events either, the the crucial lack of communication with her boyfriend and main support group about what shes planning to do and how important her performance at this role is. If they had even one grounded check in conversation about how much Andy needs to give in order to complete the 1 year and not get fired I 100% beleive her friends would have been behind her. Instead the only conversations her friends here in between the gifts is 'she hates me' 'oh the dragon lady is calling again' etc etc
its a no fault situation where all parties could have done something different to avoid the conflict that arose.
And Miranda's characer is both based of of an actual person, and a typical characterization of what it takes to be a women in an executive role backwhen it was not typical for a woman to be in a position with that much executive authority. You are the boss, not the friend, and the choices you make are not personal, but a reflections of the expectations needed to maintain the organization. While Miranda is cutthroat, this is also the expectation for the Fashion industry, at least at the time of the movie. Trying to say Miranda was Mean or unfair or unrealistic marginalizes both the responsibility of her role, and the choices she made to chose work over her home life, as if those choices were easy for her to make, as if she wasn't aware of the consequences of her choices and actions.

I graduated college in 2005 so this film was my Roman Empire. You're spot on about change, maturity, and learning how to gain power and influence through how you present yourself and how you move through people and relationships at work. She made mistakes--not knowing Runway, not knowing Miranda, bagging on fashion when that is such an integral part of her job, etc. But she listened to good advice from Nigel and she found her voice and power. In the end, she's able to do what she wants. ❤❤❤

The devil wears Prada was a book loosely about Vogue editor in chief Ana Wintor and her devil like attitude, her working conditions and how she treats her staff. Vogue is a publication first and for most and has legit writers and writers about 21 century art which is what we know as fashion today. Condé Nast which houses Vogue also is the parent company to GQ, Vanity Fair,W, the New Yorker to name a few. The magazines that they publish are very well know and also iconic.

In the book, the boyfriend wasn't like this. He was a teacher who was passionate about helping kids in the local community, so it was an even bigger contrast to having a job in fashion that doesn't seem like it contributes the same way as his job. Like, he was practically a saint.

  • @emilysmith259

I don't think Andy was really 'changing' herself. I think she was taking good advice and putting forth more effort at work instead of treating her position like just a paycheck. If you treat your job like a career, you'll get more respect - which is what she wanted. She didn't really care about the clothes or the make up, etc. She didn't really want to go to Paris, she knew that was Emily's thing. And when she did quit, she went back to the style she felt comfortable in. She started dressing nicer and 'caring' about fashion to get respect from her coworkers, and more importantly Miranda. And when she saw at the end how much that life cost her and how Miranda was able to throw Stanley Tucci's character under the bus to save her own ass - she decided she didn't want that and quit.

This movie and the negative aspect of Andy changing mid plot its only being presented thru 3rd parties views (her boyfriend being mad with her outfit, her friend being mad with the same thing yet they were assholes when the phone call scene cuz nobody in real life should mess with others job like that) and that´s why it falls flat a little bit for me. You cant be mad at someone for adapting and paying their dues in order to fulfill their dreams, and lets be real for real, Andy wasn't really changing like for "the worst" cuz she remained a nice genuine person, never acted up or was a b-word towards their people around her. Yes she missed a holiday but who wasn´t because of work. The real turning point was actually at the limo scene with Miranda cuz she pointed her she was becoming the person Andy knew she was not going to want be (honestly would´ve been more impactful if Emily had not actually got into an accident cuz that made the situation for Andy worked for the better) but Andy right there made her choice and being happy with her choice was actually the moral of the movie. She stuck to herself. Her boyfriend is kinda like a man-child throwing tantrums and not actually being happy for her like you mentioned. Mind you, he is insinuating they moved to Boston while knowing Andy has truly a better chance to be a writer in New York. But hey, thats just my take. Great reaction guys!

A book about the Boss From Hell becomes a movie about the Worst Employee In The World. She wanted the cherry but was unwilling to do what was necessary to get it, and when she finally did, her bratty boyfriend constantly pulled her down. In the end she did get what she was after (a good recommendation from Runway, a famous industry journal); it pushed the next door open enough to make the job a sure thing. But I feel her boyfriend and her other friends were very selfish. It wasn't integrity that irritated that guy; if it was, he'd understand. He's a sous chef, for gods' sakes. If there's anyone who understands having no life, it's restaurant kitchen staff. What irritated him was that her focus was off of him; she was thinking too much about her job to the point where he felt neglected. It really tells you something about him that he knew she had set a time limit of one year to take her recommendation and go, and yet he couldn't just step back and let her have that time to set the path for the rest of her life. It was a year, not a decade; it was a job, not a divorce. If he couldn't own up to the fact that it was his problem, not hers (dedicating herself to her job is not integrity how, exactly?), then he needs to get himself a girlfriend with no ambition and no outer life.

It’s changing her? Yes into a grown up who works. Her boyfriend and friends were idiots. She’s not seeking Miranda’s validation, she’s trying to learn how to be excellent at her job. And she is willing to learn. To me at the end it was pretty clear Andi and her bf were history. She stayed in NY and he went to Boston for his career. Andi decided to go for her career in a way that didn’t hurt others and also grew up enough to be free of the crappy unsupportive boyfriend and juvenile friends.

Did he express well? no he didnt! In the end, andie understood that she can change, but she doenst need to become something else. Sure now, she dress well, have better hairstyle and knows Gabbana. She was supposed to gain confidence and she did, but her job meant more to her than what really mattered. Andy learned the hard way and later tried to make amends for it when it was too late. Her female friend was right in what she said to Andy because she was saying it out of love. Oh and Nate is a chef.

I watched this movie a lot of times, but suddnely after my last rewatched a thought have opened my eyes. I started being uncomfortable that the authors made Andy's friends and Nate put an emphasis on her interest in fashion (which is not a problem at all), instead of making her understand that this job is destroying her, breaking mentally and could potentially cause her physical harm, after which she'd be most likely thrown under the bus the same way Emily was. No one should work for such a person like Miranda. Under the "fashion" plot hindes the topic of harassment on the workspace, and the worst is that all characters in the film seem to be ok with it, and even pushing Andy into the guilt of not trying harder, when Mirnada is just an ****hole. And what Andy's friends say: oh, you now like fashion, you don't belong here anymore, when it actually shoould be: Girl, wake up, in which part of your contract it was it stated that you should do bossess' children's homework? ._.
If anyone reads it, please take care of yourself, don't allow anyone to walk over you.
