I knew, as someone who appreciates music (not just a reactor), you’d enjoy this one. Romaine neck bend gets me every time. I asked him about pedals once and how he gets his tone and he said he doesn’t really use pedals much (though he clicks into something here) and gets a lot of his tone from his fingers, and the fact that he uses his thumbnail to pluck gives a certain organic tone too.

Wade In The Water isn't just a Nina Simone song, it is much much older from the times of the underground railroad or even older than that. It is a song that inconspiciously tells black slaves that there are search dogs about and should they have thoughts of fleeing, remember to "wade in the water", to make the dogs lose their scent. (There are a few more of these coded message spiritual songs) It is featured in the longest ever running muscial (> 60 years) called Revelations, that nearly no white person ever seems to have heard about. Again, loved your musician's viewpoint! I'm sitting here watching this while eating breakfast--and getting chills from the urgency of this performance! Yes, Ren really takes on the role of director and does it well, as he does in his videos. I think it was in one of his videos, when talking about producing a proof-of-concept musical story video for Netflix, that he said one of his dreams was to be a director. He said it with a big smile on his face, as illustrated by this emoji: 😄

Ed to add, whenever I see the solo where Romain in his colourful pants, goes over to Ren on the ground and they play to each other, dipping the guitar necks and heads (?), I am reminded of birds in a mating dance!! It cracks me up every time. A bit like those exotic birds species where the males form groups to battle it out in dancing routines.

Ren has said that he spends hours meticulously mixing his own busking videos as well as those of The Big Push. Here is how he described the recording process in the comments of one of TBP’s videos: “Line inputs running from each of the busking amps into a H4N recorder. Then the H4N condenser mic placed in front of the amps to capture the ambience of the street. Then another iPhone mic recording the drums (just set on voice recorder). Then mix all that together in post on Logic with some light compression and EQ to make everything pop, and voila!”
Thanks for that Colleen! I had been wondering about the drums. Amazing how good the mics are on phones aint it. I've been amazed myself recording a drummer and one guitar in the past.

My guess is that Ren (et al) works on the sound extensively in post- which is to say it sound much better here than it did on the street.
He does. His interview with The Charismatic Voice was great. They got pretty technical. He’s been mixing and producing since he was a kid. He would painstakingly go through the lives to edit background noise and bring out certain things. He did not though actually edit their voices or instruments to change them. Thats just pure talent.
It makes sense! I should have realised that, but never the less, the sound is impressive.

Goran the guy who's swapping the strap for Ren normally plays bass guitar. Goran likes his strap longer than Ren so plays the guitar lower down & Ren prefers his guitar higher so that's with the strap change.

Really love your reaction to this (and all the other Ren stuff I have seen you do!) I am thinking that the guitar strap belonged to the other guy because he usually plays bass and they were switching it out because on this song Ren was playing bass. Keep it up! Appreciate it! 🙂
