The Innocents is a great movie. So dark, and the final confrontation is absolutely gorgeous - a busy park, with the adults completely blind to the event but the kids fully aware of what's happening.
That movie The Innocents is incredible. Ed is spot on. The director cited Domu as a major “influence,” but I’d say that film is a straight up adaptation.
The reason that it took so long for the last few issues was Otomo doing the flip himself. He got busy with other stuff and the last few issues of Epic's Akira ended up taking a long time.
Thank you for highlighting these issues. I collected Akira when it was published by Epic way back when, and LOVED every page of it. I had forgotten about these last few issues however -- what a blast from the past! (They spelled Jo Duffy's name wrong on that first page! So far as I know, she's always spelled it 'Jo' Duffy, not 'Joe'.)
I have the complete run from way back when. There was a huge gap between issue 33 and 34 - over three years. But once the wait was over, the last 5 issues came out monthly, like before. At least, that's my memory, which could be wrong, it's been a fair while.
A guy I used to hang out with was convinced that Shirow did that Joe mad pin-up because his eyes gravitated to that name in the graffiti and he wasn't the most sophisticated reader so he wasn't up on differentiating between manga styles - especially when he was more used to early Shirow who had a lot of empty space and clean lines.

I had no idea there was all this North American work in the back of those issues! Seeing Bret Blevins in there was awesome!
