Hi Guys! thanks for the love. Here's a little history for your listeners. FC first appeared in Visions #1in 1979 in an 8-page story. Visions was a sort of deluxe fanzine/comic. It had a great Neal Adams cover and an interview with Jim Steranko (my first mentor in comic publishing and storytelling) Visions #1 had a press run of 1000 signed and numbered books but about 200 got lost in a fire. Interestingly enough Visions #1 included the first LGBTQ character in comics, (not counting undergrounds) the Red Dyke.
In 1980 we did Visions #2. the story was the Artless Dodger story. with issue #3 VISIONS became the "con-book" for the Atlanta Fantasy Fair and FC appeared in other issues (sometimes just as a "one-pager" or pin-up, on up to 8 or 9.

Hands down my favorite comic character ever. Among several dozen original FC pieces by Bob, I still have the original "Showcase" pin-up from Visions #4 (page 56)! ❤

I actually got my daughter into The Flaming Carrot through "Cerebus". All it took was one look at him, and she *needed* to know more! I got her a couple of his comics and a trade that Christmas.

THANK YOU for doing Flaming Carrot! One of my favorites. Burden is an unsung genius, and a very interesting guy. The magazine FC started in was called Visions - really neat, super short-printed book with some really good talent contributing.

One of the few Comic books that continually made me laugh out loud. Beyond classification.
One time in meeting Bob Burden, He asked about my opinion of the Flaming Carrot in a major motion picture. He is as interesting a human as he is a creator.

    yes!
    ty guys.
I was a huge fan of Flaming Carrot, Reid Flemming, Megaton Man, and Mr Monster. all worthy of review.

This one got me immediately thinking about Reid Fleming. It's not a superhero book, but it def shares the absurdist vibe of Flaming Carrot and The Tick. Hope David Boswell is in your reading pile.

I love FLAMING CARROT! One of the first issues I bought was #18, the first one that Dark Horse published, and I remember sitting in my car reading it while a friend went into the grocery store to buy some things. I was just laughing my ass off. It's the funniest and most wonderfully surreal comic ever. Thanks for paying tribute.

Late to the video but wanted to drop my memories of FC and Bob Burden. I knew of Flaming Carrot from the 1990's but never really read it. In 2003, I had a video rental place in Atlanta and one day Bob Burden dropped in. I don't think I ever saw a picture of him, so it wasn't until he told me that he was Bob Burden that I put two and two together. Anyway, after we talked, he went out to his car and gave me a pile of his comics, including the TMNT shown here. Soon after, he was there every few days to rent some films. Very "interesting" guy for sure and had a lot of great conversations with him.

i have the whole series from issue #1. i used to write to Bob in the early days and he sent me his pencil sketch of the next issue cover art. It's the issue where FC is leaping out of a circle saying "Ut!"

    Fortune favors the bold!
I've loved the Flaming Carrot since I first saw his cross-over with the TMNT. But my favorite issue of Flaming Carrot is when he featured Reid Flemming in issue #32. Thankfully his comics were very affordable and easy to get when I collected mine. Thanks for covering these great books.

Haha! Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot xD! Thanks for featuring him, guys. And it's quite an injustice that "Mystery Men's" such an underrated gem of a film with a really grand cast. I wonder if Uncle Warren's has some Rick Geary. I think he's another underrated gem of a creator.

pity they never did a spinoff book with the road hogs from outer space! w/a carrot crossover of course.
i followed along from issue 1-up to the turtles before i quit reading it....
i liked his approach to art, he could get away with stuff the artists working for the big two couldn't...
so his art and writing often pushed some boundaries and i liked that.
was nice guy at the cons,...
we were lucky to have that while it lasted,...
    thanx, bob

Nice! How can you not love the Flaming Carrot!?!?! Wicked twisted, in all the right ways. And those Gumby books are an absolute treat! IIRC Art even threw Gumby into his fantastic Warlock adventures in Web of Spider-Man Annual #2

Weird surreal is the best! 😂
Thanks for this! I'm not sure where I recently tripped over Flaming Carrot (maybe seeing listed issues on eBay and remembering having heard of him long ago) but went on a binge buying the tpb's and single issues.
Finished reading them all a short while ago, he's now a top favourite character in my collection. So brilliantly weird! I'm decades late to the party but it still holds up.
My other faves of a similar vein are Reid Fleming World's Toughest Milkman by David Boswell and Fletcher Hanks Stardust (and his others).
    Cheers!

    Love the Flaming Carrot.
    I miss that series.
The Mystery men movie is a lot of fun, but the comics version is a 100 times better.
They should have gotten their own cartoon.
Be cool to see you guys cover Megaton man or any of Don Simpson's stuff.

Hey guys! Thanks ever so much for the long-overdue overview of Bob Burden's brilliant Flaming Carrot. A side note: While you were flipping through your stack, I couldn't help but notice a little something in the indicia (inside front cover) of Renegade's FC #17/July 1987-- the name Peter Avanzino is listed as Circulation Director. Could this be the very same gentleman who's brought us countless hours of animated goodness on shows like Ren and Stimpy, Drawn Together, Futurama and many more..?! Consider my curiosity well and truly piqued! Keep fighting the good fight!
