They were amazing issues, couldn't wait to pick them up at the time
I tip out that they grew up not far from where I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. They are a bit older than me but their books where on the street of Hollywood, down Melrose where all the Punk/ New Wave/ Goth /Ska kids we would go down to shop the record shops and thrift stores. I didn’t pick the books back then because I didn’t get it but later on they are prized in my collection. The life and landscape is familiar to me now because I’ve been up and down those same streets. Plus the life style in Oxnard mirrors the SF Valley.
After CXC, it was mentioned that Raina Telgemeier sold 18 million books. She’d be an interesting shoot video.
I feel a little intimidated on getting into Love & Rockets. There's the individual issues, then there's the collections like Maggie the Mechanic, and then the different collections put out like Flies on the Ceiling.
Just grab something and enjoy. Then grab something else. Easy as pie
the stories are sometimes serialized but over all four volumes they skip around between places and time periods. it's a huge body of work but it's made up of so many beautiful self contained stories and you get to know the bros as creators over time and the same goes for their characters.
i picked up my first handful of from the later sections of volume 1 and it has never been an issue.
(the continuity is deeper than just having a strict reading order.)
My first Love & Rockets reading was a collection called "Music For Mechanics: A Love & Rockets Collection." Now, I own "Love & Rockets: The First Fifty" set so I can easily read them. I am a Love & Rockets fan, an amateur cartoonist, I think of reading that work as rewarding and educational, I am excited to continue reading it!

I really wanted to start getting L&R comics and your videos made me even more curious!! My local comic shops only have versions with ugly covers though :( I’ll ask them if they have some like the ones you’ve shown in your videos. And hopefully I’ll find some of your comics too :D
Jaime is even more minimalist now. He hardly uses any shading at all. I wonder if that's a conscious choice.
I preferred GIlbert's stories comics in the first iteration of L&R. He created an amazing world and rich characters and amazing stories very quickly in the beginning of L&R.

I think this is where Xaime just starts to come into his own with his writing as he basically abandons the SF themes, which in hindsight it makes sense as a familiar genre to start from, but as Jaime progresses, I'm glad he sees how unnecessary that genre selling was. So now we get to see his characters become real, which is what Beto was already doing. From here forward we get to see an inside look at the world these characters as they exist within great dynamics of relationships and culture, but now with a more grounded, almost urban, vibe. We see punk rock and goth culture themes, mental issue themes, engaging and complex relationship dynamics as we close to The Death of Speedy and other great chapters of the Locas cast.
