Great review! Have not missed an issue of Love and Rockets since 1987. New Stories issue 3 may be the best single issue of any comic I’ve ever read. -Keep up the great work!

How was he already SO good at Toth-esque suggestion & reduction? It's beyond humbling to be reminded that these guys were already at this level of sheer craft and mastery, this early.
Man, I started reading Love and Rockets in the early 80's when I was in junior high school. It's been a part of my life all that time!
You didn't mention that Jaime and Love and Rockets are still going strong coming up on 40 years later...AND that Maggie, Hopey and the gang are still going strong too AND that in story the characters have aged, if not 40 years, at least, what, 20 or 30 years?
So true about the "gateway drug"... I'm spending all my lunch money on Love and Rockets collections now. Almost literally: I park in a free spot a half-mile from work so that I can spend my parking money on the OG fantagraphics collections instead.
Am I the only one who sees a connection between Jaime and Brian Bolland? There are aspects of Jaime's art that really remind me of Bolland. The accuracy, the consistency, the level of detail, the impeccable figures, the way they texture and light things etc.
Yeah, very much in his early work. It's unmistakable on the cover of issue #1. That disappears from his work quickly, though.
Looks like I'm there the newest comment on a 2 yr old post, LOL! Ed and Jimm have exposed me to so so much already. Things I knew something of but no where as deep, and things of which I NEVER knew existed. THIS. THIS. I was blown away by many artists featured on CK, but Jaime Hernandez.........just wow. Him and Charles Burns are two artists I really want to study now.

At 21:00, the last page of Mechanics is depicting Rena with fake blonde hair. She’s tracked down San Jo, who’s disguised as a half-blind invalid and guns him down
EDIT: the newspaper headlines in the last panel have the clues.
Love this comic. I was of the 80s punk scene and alternative music from Phoenix Arizona, this comic sort of echos life in Los Angeles at the time as a punk or alternative rock type. With Latino , it also resembles Phoenix. I collected issue after issue like I did doc martens and the music of the times. I was robbed of my love and rockets collection, each going at 500 or more... I paid 2.95 new for each haha.
I heard of love and rockets before Cartoonist Kayfabe but it was Cartoonist Kayfabe who made me pull the trigger on getting it
L & R #17 onwards and Eisner's "A Life Force" permanently weaned me away from 'the mainstream' way back when.
Later on, the works of a fella named Alex Ross almost wooed me back, but it was thankfully too late.
Not even "Watchmen" or "The Dark Knight" could hold on to me.
I was more interested in what Fantagraphics and Kitchen Sink and Catalan, etc, had to offer.
At 14:36 the fight on the right hand side reminded me enough of the Charles Atlas “kick sand and pick on the skinny guy” ad running in comics for years that I looked it up to compare. It’s different, though.
Tales from Somnopolis ran in the back of Mr. X. I think Errata Stigmata made a cameo in the first issue as a party guest.

I first discovered you guys when you did the 1st love and rockets issue & like the next time I went to the swapmeet i found the reprint of issue 4 for a dollar in a random box of books lol
Whenever Mario shows up, it's like a great George Harrison song showing up on a Beatles album, almost an embarrassment of talent under one cover.
Interesting that in the reprint (28:00) they moved the logo over to true center, hiding a bit of it behind the dinosaur's head...
I had a sudden realization that the figure at 8:13 on the right under “DAY 16” was studied from Botticelli’s Venus, but when I compared them side by side there were differences in the pose
Ashamed to say I never tried any Love and Rockets. Jaime's work in this is breathtaking. I see lots of Wally Wood inspiration here including the dinosaur on the cover . Thanks for the spotlight, I need to dive in for sure.

Hey Dudes, Thank you so much for this channel. It speaks to me on a level that I've never experienced before! You often chat about "spotting blacks". Using strong, bold blacks is something I'm trying to figure out in my own work. Would you consider talking more about this technique?

Anybody notice the backward letter 'N' in the first page of parts 3 and 6? It appears to be a deliberate, eye catching error as it is done in part 6 in both the top and mirror images. What do you guys think? I have yet to buy any of these types of comics, but the more I see and read your reviews and insights, the more Interested I am getting in buying them. Keep up the great reviews and your own great efforts.
