That sounds so good. The New Gods appearances in the Justice League animated series and the Apokolips stuff in "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" are some of my favourite pieces of any DC animated content.
Mignola's work in Cosmic Odyssey is wonderful. Some of the best depictions of Batman and Darkseid ever
Nice Carlos Garson inks on that one too.
Mignola did the classic Mr. Freeze design for Bruce Timm for BtAS, so definitely in that era/school of design for these characters.
As a couple of others have mentioned, in the mid-90s, Warner Bros Feature Animation had a few projects in development, a couple of which were based on DC comics. One was New Gods, one was an Aquaman film. When I was working at WBFA on Quest for Camelot in '97 they had the development artwork (these drawings among them) up on the walls in the studio, along with development art for The Iron Giant, and also a project about animals escaping from a zoo, very similar to Dreamworks' Madagascar. At a certain point the studio execs were set to decide which project would go into production. As a huge comics fan, I was hoping for one of the DC projects, but Iron Giant ended up getting the greenlight, and the rest is history.
I’m not sure about my information because it was a long time ago but in the the mid/late 90’s. I was in a story boarding class and my teacher was a story boarding artist who had worked on Iron Giant and was working on Osmosis Jones at the time. He gave us a animation script to storyboard for assignment. It ended up being the pilot for a New Gods series that didn’t happen. They had already introduced some of the characters in the Justice League series an where think of a spin off. The teacher was pretty awesome, even sneaking a rough draft of Iron Giant to watch a year before it was done.
Man, what could've been. Crazy how fully realized Mignola's vision was, even for some dashed off concept ideas.
Seems like a lot of his ideas for those Kirby belts and shoulders might've been ported over to the Superman animated series and Justice League. They definitely went more Kirby armor for the New Gods stuff on those shows. That Kalibak, man...if Bruce Timm or whoever was art directing didnt see these Mignola designs beforehand, that's a helluva coincidence
I remember that story in which, when working out the look of a type of "aquatic motorcycle" for the movie Atlantis, Mike Mignola suggested that, when the characters got on the bikes, they should look like glowing skeletons on fire - of course, they rejected the idea, unfortunately.
„Cosmic Odyssey“ by Starlin and Mignola was my favorite Comicbook when I was a kid.
It's amazing how these pieces look so tight and so loose at the same time.
This is super cool! I am always immediately inspired by Mignola. I'm working in the sculptural field, and his volumes and weights speak to me directly.

They are so cool! This drawings are very different from the original designs, but they are super recognizable!
Trying to emulate Mignolas simplistic style for expediency sake, I learned very quickly that hes a master of anatomy and a master of the artistic planes too. Thats why his minimalist style looks so believable.Theres nothing simplistic or quick about what he does- hes just a master.

LOVE MIKE MIGNOLA! this is gonna be EPIC! much like Jim mentioned, he MAKES me want to draw.. ALWAYS ( not that I am any good, but looking at mike it sort of gives me permission to have a sort of style... even if that style is " shitty" lol) wondering if you guys will do some Cam Kennedy at any point ? love his art! huge fan of his work on the Boba Fett character! hope to see that at some point in CKF!

You should look at the comic he drew with Jim Starlin called Cosmic Odyssey issues 1-4.
low or rounded shoulders makes the traps look bigger thus lending to the appearance of a burdened weight. ;) Lots of shape lingo as well.
He says he’s not a big Kirby guy but I think he’s cappin lol. I would watch this if it was a feature length movie.
Mignola’s style complements Jack Kirby’s blocky style so well it’s a crime that this show never took off. Hell, Mignola should just write a comic line for New Gods.

I love seeing other artists do their own version of Kirby’s New Gods characters but I will always prefer the original concept. I hope you sometime in the near future you guys review Cosmic Odyssey, it would be the perfect follow up

Outstanding! Mignola's primitive style is Raw! He has several styles though.
I saw these in a twomorrow’s magazine Back Issue. I forget what issue it was. I guess it was going to be a theatrical release cartoon movie but some animated movie flopped so WB shut down their movie animation stuff
This was great! Mignola is a Master. You guys ever look at Seven to Eternity? It's Fantastic, Remender and Opena are on another level. Even their work on Uncanny X force is awesome.
