One of the things I appreciate the most about this story is its pacing.
Nowadays, DC would probably not publish a Batman book where the story is told so succinctly and moves this swiftly.

I had the privilege of interviewing writer Brian Augustyn a few years ago -- he passed away earlier this year and was very active in the Phoenix comics scene. A wry wit and great supporter to us self-publishing cartoonists in Arizona! Here's our conversation: ruclips.net/video/AQG8piTzbTs/видео.html

This was the comic that spawned the Elseworlds line and this is retroactively considered the first Elseworlds title now...

Gotham By Gaslight had a couple follow ups: Master of the Future, and (my personal favorite) Batman/Houdini: The Devil's Workshop - which is fully painted by Mark Chiarello, and its a perfect compliment to the Art Noveau style of the time it takes place in.

There's a Moebius feel to the front cover. There is also a 'Batman Noir' version, and the black and white feels clearer. This book points towards 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen', nearly 10 years later which plays with other characters in the same era

There is a Gotham by gaslight black and white hardcover. As close as you can get go artist edition. It’s great.

My first project when I started at the Franklin institute was to archive the collection of a gas lantern company out of Camden NJ. That same week a friend gave me a copy of this without knowing what I was working on

DC has done a deluxe edition of Killing Joke, and recoloring the entire thing (with flashbacks colored in grays or sepia tones); this book deserves that treatment (if they haven’t already done so). Not garish computer coloring, but something that really complements Mignola’s Tothish blacks.

Big Teddy Roosevelt feel from that Gordon.

RegardingMignola and Year One, there’s a panel in Year One when Bruce Wayne returns to his mansion all bloody after his first unsuccessful mission. It’s a close up on his eyes, it may be the panel right before the bat crashes through the window. It looks exactly like a Mignola drawing. So much so that it almost looks out of place.

Gotham by Gaslight pushed me from a casual comic reader to a regular. So good.

Maybe they had but I never saw it, but I was always surprised during pre-Crisis times that we never got a Batman Imaginary story (or other major hero) based on heroes having started in a previous decade (Western or knights especially). Some time travel and dream stories had visits to all those and more, and Clark Kent was punched into the Revolutionary War for the Bicentennial, but no actual parallel Earth. Which is a shame, since with Earth-One and Two having the whole 20ish year difference, it seems a natural to do the process backwards, and would've been a lot of fun in Silver Age hands like Swanderson, Schauffenberger or Bronze Age's Perez.

Late comment here. I took this to Mignola at a con to get signed. He looked at it and laughed: "oh yeah, I forgot I drew this!" Funny that it's probably the most influential Elseworld ever and possibly a footnote for him.

Loved this comic when it first came out. I hope you do an overview of the dc series 'thriller' at some point. It had amazing artwork by trevor von eeden and in later issues alex nino.

@11:11, those muddy foggy colors combined with Mignola's linework trailing off into nothing at the characters' feet....chef's kiss. And i'm still over here drawing swirly cloud puffs trying to simulate fog 😂

Great episode. Would like to see you feature the Concrete “Killer Smile” trade, some crazy psychology in that story as well as a stack of juicy technique.
The trade includes reference photo comparisons and glowing Frank Miller intro....as well as notes on the journey to the Legend imprint.

my first elseworlds as a kid in the 90s spec boom. probably set the bar pretty high for the rest of them, but it was also where decent stories went since they didn't need to be tied down by all that bullshit event continuity of garbage like zero hour.
kinda wild to see a reserved version of mignola compared to his black heavy hellboy universe stuff that we all know him for. didn't even realize he penciled this at the time, was a nice oh shit moment like finding out dude designed mr. freeze for BTAS

The Batman costume in the latest movie had the high collar like the costume in this book. It’s like a feature from a suit of knight’s armor.

FROM HELL started in TABOO in 1989. GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT has a February 1989 publication date, probably making it coming out sooner, especially with comics being post-dated.

Out of all the comics I have sold down the years, this is the one I regret. I agree you can argue the story itself is a bit weak and obvious, but I lived Mignola’s almost steampunk, layered take in the Batsuit, and placing him in the 19thC tradition of both detective fiction and psychoanalysis was inspired
