For a long time I couldn’t articulate what it was about this story that captivated me. I appreciate you guys for breaking it down so that a civilian like can understand it.

What a great inaugural series, and what a lineup of talent to get it off the ground. Chiarello is criminally underrated as both a colorist and editor.

The library editions are pretty incredible as well - they’re worth picking up for the introductions by comic creators like Alan Moore, and the extra artwork alone!
    Love these videos guys

Hellboy is everything to me. I believe strongly I don't stick in comics without it. I was treading water with little direction before Hellboy came out and when I read it a light bulb went off. It helped shape everything that came after. Thanks Mike! :D

Mignola is my personal favorite creator, so much confidence and craft in his approach. Really lean panels and doesn't go much for extra eye candy (Well maybe sometimes) the Mignolaverse is a real achievement. I got to meet him in 2018 at a MOCCA event and he is just a wonderful figure in this medium.

This comic was revelatory when it came out.
I had been steadily collecting Mignola for years and loved his work.
In this book we saw not only a great concept with a lot of potential, but also post the early Image era Mike showed us what a creator-owned comic could be, and it was spectacular.
Mike brought all my favourite elements from his work on Fafyrd and the Grey Mouser, Alien: Salvation, Dracula, and Gotham by Gaslight and blended them into something fresh and new.
The Mignola-drawn Hellboy comics are still at the top of my list of best comics I own.

You guys need to cover John Byrne's NEXT MEN #21. It's the first color appearance of Hellboy (out prior to HB#1). Very cool stuff.

Love the blue that Chiarelllo placed over the black ink, makes the pages so vibrant. Blew my mind when I first noticed it. This mini-series was an amazing debut, please do the rest of it & Adams’ M&O’B!

I gave this (and the first Hellboy appearance issue of Next Men) away at some point in my life, and I'm still pretty bummed out about it

I thought I appreciated Mignola’s work before lol
Watching you two break down his color work and use of scale, has only deepened that appreciation

Now this is how ya start a Monday especially after Halloween! I’ve been following Mike’s work since Hulk & Alpha Flight mid 80’s! True professional in tackling stuff he didn’t feel comfortable with, but he grew as an artist and did a lot of cool stuff along the way! Hellboy is fruition of all of that,Mike took a chance and delivered with a great blue collar character and wildly creepy world spiced with a interesting cast of characters! Lots of dark dry humor too! Hellboy is approaching 30yrs and still is a great fun read! I’ve all of the library editions /art books etc! Mike has more than earned it! Collaboration with Richard Corbin ,Guy Davis and John Arcudi , Duncan Fergredo+ many other creative people don’t hurt either! Kevin Knolan refined the Hellboy logo from Mike’s rough design! As always great video! Thanks again!

Great video as always. Don't know if you remember, but one of the best unsung series was Dark Horse Presents (how do I know it was unsung? because I managed to find almost every back issue no matter where I looked). A cool testing ground for stories that introduced Sin City, among others. Dark Horse came along at the perfect time and Mike Richardson's tastes and persistence in doing things differently attests to the fact that the company is still here.
Those first Aliens comics, though in black and white, really jumped out at you (pun intended) from the shelf. I haven't looked at them in years but I remember the art being really strong and the use of duo-tone for the hatchings was really great.

Mike Mignola’s work is genius, and I’ve been buying anything and everything he does for years. However, lately a lot of the stuff in the Hellboy line isn’t very exciting IMO, but when Mike’s on both art and writing duties it takes me to a very special place that can’t be matched in all of comics.

You check out an interview that NPR did with Mignola a few years ago. I think it came out when the Hellboy II Movie came out. I think it only an hour long.

I haven't had a chance to watch as many of your videos recently, but listening to your comments here - would be very interested to hear your take on Gary Gianni's "Monstermen" or "Corpus Monstrum" book - or maybe one of the shorts that have been published in other DH books.

I always really liked the look of that "Torch of Liberty" character, Especially is Mug old's art style. I wonder if he was ever used anywhere else?

    • @malcomalexander9437
      @malcomalexander9437 2 года назад

Torch of Liberty is a John Byrne character. He was in Hellboy because there was initially an attempt at creating a shared universe at Dark Horse, but that went nowhere because everyone involved ended up doing their own things and not really bothering to keep it a shared universe.

Back in the day, this was one of the first comics I went hunting for. I actually read Wake the Devil first and love it the most. I will not lie though, I wish they would reprint Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser by him. I love that series and mine is falling apart.

At one point the Legend guys announced a Bruce Timm, comic called THE WHA? (not positive on this title). Sadly this book never came to fruition.
