@@hailgod1 To be honest, right now I'm considering returning it. I'm 5'11 230lbs. The chair itself is really comfortable. I really like the high back so I can lean all the way back and the headrest is comfortable. The major deal breaker is the arm rests. The height is fine, but because their mounted so far up towards the front of the chair, they push into the side of my legs when sitting. It forces you to sit with your legs in a more closed position. Personally I like sitting more with my legs spread and feet wider apart. After about a half hour sitting in the chair my legs hurt from the armrests digging in, and then I have to consciously make sure I have to sit with my legs closed. I'm a Marcus user for over a year now and since the beginning I thought the armrests were a dealbreaker. I removed those within 10 minutes of assembly because they prevented me from getting close enough to my desk without having to lower the chair which I didn't want to do to stay in ergonomic working position. Everything else about the chair is great for me. Depth is just right and so is the height of the headrest and the stiffness of the back mesh. If they made adjustable armrests for it it will be perfect for me.
Is it good for sitting long hours like more than 8 hrs? Heard mesh is not good for long hours sitting as it can sag over time. Markus is head adjustable?
I had the same issue and also removed the arm rests. I've got the leather version and my ass keeps sliding off the seat, and I do miss the handles to push myself back. And after 3 years the dampner occasionally just falls down, need to contact IKEA for this. And something is squacking when I lean really far back, but I just saw that it's a simple lube fix. I've also replaced the rollers with inliner wheels, which won't mess up the wooden floor we have. The original wheels and the plastic floor mat was not nice.

Thanks so much for this extensive review, you commented most of the main comfort points that I wanted to know about the new Jarvälfjeffjlkf... I'll be sticking with my trusty old Markus for now, until a really comfortable chair comes along. The maximum tilt angle looks the same on both, which is not enough for me; though maybe with the seat tilt on the new one it will have a better effect.
My back thanks you for this review and your channel. I just grabbed the JÄRVFJÄLLET (prefer it over the Markus) over any of the gaming chairs on the market and its an absolute dream. I cant believe how much a difference it is making to my old "racer" style chair. I dont feel tiered after sitting in it for a few hours and its just so much better for the price.
@@antoshechka Would still recommend it. I have to admit its not as good for "lounging" in watching videos but for typing and working where it encourages you to sit up, its good. I dont feel however that the chair would suit a large or heavy person.
@@simont1299 thanks for your feedback. I'm not able to compare Marcus and JÄRVFJÄLLET (there is no IKEA in my town) so i choose JÄRVFJÄLLET based on better adjustability.
I just picked out a Markus completely at random, before seeing this video and after reviewing your other video about best posture while sitting. I guess I'm fortunate for being a bit of a tall person with longer arms and legs since that made it pretty much perfect for me. But yeah...I can see how it'd be an issue for smaller folks. And agreed on the foam - easily the best of any other and made me completely forget leather.
Yesterday after 30 minutes of sitting and switching betwen those chairs I decided to buy the MARKUS. In my opinion it is bettter if you prefer something more comfy, like a sofa. The JÄRVFJÄLLET is better for someone who wants it for work purposes and would need more support while sitting straight.
Hi David... it's 2020... and I can't go to a store and sit in a chair... thank you for this video. I also cant afford $1000 bucks for a herman miller, and my couch isn't cutting it 🤷🏾♀️
I spent 2 hours at my IKEA sitting in Markus and Järvjellet. And I was so disappointed.. The Järvjellet has great features, and the backrest with lumbar support and headrest are awesome fo my 186 cm. But that seat is just horrible. Its not only way to short for anyone over 180 cm, but it also is such a thin foam that you basically sit on the wood after just 5 mins. SO I got the Markus and although I don't really like the headrest, as it should better be a neckrest, but pushes your head forward uncomfortably, the seat feels great and the reclinement is pretty good for its price... I just don't get why they couldn't make the Järv a bit better cushioned and give it a tad longer seat, than it would be perfetc for so many people. Such a missed opportunity imo!
As a small person, I could cry over how many chairs I have tried, especially gaming chairs. I just sink in. Then I tried the Hattenfjäll and fell in love immediatelly. Finally a chair in which I can sit straight and am FULLY supported. It forms around all my back to the legs and just locks me into a proper working position. Also sitting relaxing on it, is possible. (Currently sitting on it crosslegged) The adjustments are awesome. Sadly the chair nowadays costs 299€. IKEA is robbing people cause 3 years back it costed 215€.
I tried the Jarvfjallet for about a month and compared to a normal office chair, the seat cushion is incredibly stiff and uncomfortable for long periods of sitting. Granted, we shouldn't be sitting as long as we are but now that we're quarantined and working from home I spend way more time sitting to be comfortable in the Jarvfjallet. I can't recommend it and I would suggest anyone looking for a comfortable chair to simply wait, save more money and buy a chair. This is one of those BIFL (buy it for life) type things and not something to really cheap out on.
@@Le.kine1 it’s even worse. The seat cushion squeaks and constantly comes loose from the base that holds it in place. I’m not the most slender guy but this thing is just not comfortable for long periods. I am already seriously looking at the Herman Miller Aeron. Excellent review , i bought the Markus and initially was comfortable , but after about 2 days i started having a lower back ache , and agree on the armrests , they need to be adjustable and softer material, i added foam and wrapped them in leather , but after a week my back was getting worse due to the not adjustable lumbar, i had to give it back. if the lambar was adjustable i would have kept it because it was comfortable. i am 6'2" and about 260 .
I went to ikea to try out their gaming chairs ,ended up sitting in the Markus for 20 min or so. Thing is they’re removing the leather one ,according to staff. Went home saw a few Markus used online ,and immediately bought one just a few 100 m from my home for 20€. Love that chair when gaming ,I’m 193 and 96 kg and it suits me fine. Sir, I had tried Markus chair at a local IKEA store and fell in love immediately with it (Vissle, dark grey version as I strongly dislike the faux leather). Then I watched this video many times over - even when testing the chair right on the spot for the second time :-). Please accept my thanks for doing such valuable and informative videos. As I am 189 cm tall (6ft 3in), Markus fits me perfectly and infinitely better than literally tens of chairs I tried at six specialist furniture stores within the past week (with prices ranging from 200 to 600 USD). Here in the Czech Republic, Markus is favourably priced (3490 CZK/152 USD based on today’s conversion rate) and they provide a 99 CZK/5 USD delivery up to 50 kg per single item (I do not drive). Not that I do not contemplate a Herman Miller chair but for now I am very happy.
@@botzer8817 Not in the slightest. Yes, I definitely feel it being present but find it comfortable and soothing for my lumbar back. But chairs, as many other things in life, tend to be rather subjective affair. :-)

Having just moved out to start uni I've been using an old dining chair for the last 6 months. Horrid. Bought the hattefjall after Christmas from my home town. I had eyed it when innitially shopping for the apartment but back then it seemed expensive as hell. Thankfully the price here went down like 50€ since, so it wasn't as bad. I did try all the chairs at the store and for me it just felt the best, most of the bigger ones felt like I was drowning in them and could barely reach the headrests. Maybe I'll finally start using my new desk more often now :)
Thanks for the review. I am torn between the MARKUS & JÄRVFJÄLLET. Have visited Ikea 2 times now to check them out. I like the MARKUS better, but since the JÄRVFJÄLLET is newer I am wondering if I should get this one. Well the next visit will be the decider I guess. Excellent review and compare thanks David.
@@Shark-x77 thanks for your feedback. I'm not able to compare Marcus and JÄRVFJÄLLET (there is no IKEA in my town) so i choose JÄRVFJÄLLET based on better adjustability.
Hi David, following your review (and a few others), I bought my Markus from Ikea 29th December 2019 and it has been used almost all day and every day and evening since. Today, 21.1.23 over three years on, I still love it, however, although everything still works as new, it has developed an annoying 'clunk' in the seat mechanism whenever I move slightly. As it is located in an upstairs bedroom used as an office, the clunk is a disturbance to anyone trying to get to sleep in the next bedroom and downstairs. I'm hoping that with my receipt and proof of purchase, I can have the seat mechanism part replaced under Ikea's 10-year guarantee. I'll let you know if they do.
@@bogdanvalentin977 Not in January when I returned it. They couldn't get it to "clunk" when they examined it so, dissappointed, and thinking that it must be fixed, I ended up brining it home again for a second chance. However it got progressively worse so I video recorded the evidence and uploaded it to their customer support chat. They were really helpful ans assured me that if I returned it again that it would certainly be exchanged. I did so on 13.4.23 and they exchanged it without hesitation. The new one is perfect and the guarantee on this one runs until 2029. I am thrilled with Ikea's customer service policy on the Markus. You can't beat it! Happy customer!
As a 193cm 80Kg dude ( 6ft 3" 176lb for you Imperial folk) the IKEA Markus was the first good chair for sub 150e that i got 2 years ago and it has served me well for my PC and study needs aka sitting for more than 10 hours a day. The arm rest are useless so I took them off on day one. The cushion, back support, mesh and mechanism are all as good as they were the first day. I got a new table for my Lego hobby so i was thinking of getting something nice and comfy from Ikea again, but i will will be another Markus for sure.
@@botzer8817 124e in Serbia for the cloth upholstered version. The pleather is 158e. There are even discounts when they go for like 100e. It is still serving me well, so no complaints in the durability department and I sit for 12h a day easy with my online job.
I bought the Markus but I found after around 45 minutes of sitting in it, my underthighs would become quite painful, which I presume is due to the firmness of the foam.
Had my Markus for 5 years now (blue cloth version) I love it personally, i never use the reclining feature though as i use it primarily to sit at a computer.
The JÄRVFJÄLLET is absolutely terrible compared to the MARKUS, especially considering the MARKUS is cheaper. The construction of the base itself is piss-poor; it squeaks and cracks at any little movement after less than a month. The padding is hard as hell and you'll never get used to it. I tried for six months, with four layers of extra padding material and it was still unbearable. The seat constantly creaks when you move your ass forward/back as it slides around in its rails. The lumbar support pushes your lower back away from the mesh supporting your upper back and is thus counterintuitive because it causes all the weight of your back to end up on just your lower back. The head support, regardless of adjustment, is always in the way when you want to sit in a slightly more relaxed position while watching a movie reclined. IKEA actually stopped producing these chairs recently, after less than two years on the market. Even without seat depth, lumbar and headrest adjusment the Markus is a far superior chair. They need to iterate on that chair instead of trying to re-invent the wheel.
@@flowsy5294 Yes. It's much more comfortable. I sat in both at IKEA and found JÄRVFJÄLLET to be slightly more comfortable during a short 5 minute test, and had to buy it as it was the only one in stock. Worst decision of my life. Constant back and ass pain for 6 months. Couldn't do deadlifts at the gym anymore because my lower back was stiff as a rock. Got the Markus now. No back/neck pain, no butt pain and my lower back feels better than it has in a long, long time. Can easily fall asleep in the chair too. Far superior to the rock hard gaming chairs, for sure.

I have bought a Sedus office chair (new but low price), and after 6 years it's still as good as before. Gaming chairs are stupid. Just buy a more expensive office chair in 2nd hand and you're good to go for 10 years. And more comfortable.
I found Markus lumbar is much more comfortable and softer than JArv. But I hated how hard it is to recline. It require so much strength to push it back, then I have to lean forward to access to the lock so it basically doesn’t work. So for the Jarv I like how I can effortlessly lean back a bit but not too much while have the chair tucked in to allow my body close to the table. But I don’t feel much of the lumbar support and it’s hard I would put a think cushion inbetween. The Hat chair more comfortable than I expected, looks good only thing is missing a head support which I wanted other wise it felt quite supported to have back to back to the chair while tuck close to the table. Buuut IKEA lack of stock for god knows how long I don’t know when I’ll be able to get the Jarv chair
to be honest, I tried all three chairs at ikea and liked none of them. the Marcus doesn't have any adjustments, the Marcus sibling doesn't have a good seat depth adjustment and seat height adjustment and the smaller chair doesn't have a good seat depth adjustment either. and they all fill too stiff. will be looking for other chairs sadly.
Thank you for the video. My Jarjavvet recline became locked and I was worried it broke. Turned out it was merely locked. While the padding is more firm, I’m 6’4” and built like the dad version of a body builder (38” waist but 280 lbs) and I’ve been very happy with it.
I’m in love with the design of the HATTEFJÄLL chair but is it worth the money? It’s a lot to spend on a chair and they have brought out a black wheeled version but it’s even more money.
I bought Markus a few days ago and hate it, Im returning it... Here in Portugal we can buy much better chairs for 200 hundred dollars or less. The seat of Markus (leather version) wasnt very cushioned and the lumbar support is very unconfortable, it seems something is sticking on your back... I had to remove the arm support too because my thick legs were constricted by the arms
I'm also 5'7 and have shorter than average legs, so the seat depth of the Markus concerns me a little. Other than that it looks like such a good deal though
I have the Ikea markus . Don't really like it. I'm about 5'11 180lbs and the cushion just would fade after time. The back rest is good but the headrest started to get ripped up after some use. Still have it but got a Aeron chair and it's worlds better!
My biggest problem is that every chair I try the cushion bottoms out after like an hour of use, and im relatively light. Do any of these suffer from that issue?

I’m crossing my fingers that the leather isn’t super cheap.
Don't know if they changed it by now, but the HATTEFJÄLL does have adjustable armrests.
The foam is thicker on the newer chairs because thinner foam will break down faster over time.

Same, Being tall can be a gift and a curse. But mainly a gift :D
Thank you! Very good reviews. Can't make up my mind between Markus and JÄRVFJÄLLET. Now I know what to choose between the 2.
Hello, can you share your experience on whatever chair you've chosen?
which one did you choose?
Yesterday after 30 minutes of sitting and switching betwen those chairs I decided to buy the MARKUS. In my opinion it is bettter if you prefer something more comfy, like a sofa. The JÄRVFJÄLLET is better for someone who wants it for work purposes and would need more support while sitting straight.

I bought the Jarvfjallet and I regret not getting the Markus. I guess the stupid adjustable features just got me sold without thinking...
Hi David... it's 2020... and I can't go to a store and sit in a chair... thank you for this video. I also cant afford $1000 bucks for a herman miller, and my couch isn't cutting it 🤷🏾♀️

I've been using the Markus for more than 10 year. Best ever! Never got a back pain
Do you recommend ?
Do you recommend it for sitting more than 8 hrs or so?
DO YOU RECOMMEND BUDDY? :D

Markus is nice, but Järvfjället is reeaally good and supports your back amazingly. And the spring is more effective.
Speaking from experience you want the more dense foam as the more plush one on my old ikea chair has now worn out and i can feel the steel base.

I'll let you know if they do.
did they do it?

I got a new table for my Lego hobby so i was thinking of getting something nice and comfy from Ikea again, but i will will be another Markus for sure.

i’m around the same height and was wondering this as well - did you end up keeping it? i’m worried the head rest won’t go low enough for me (152cm)
So the markus is more comfortable? Im going to ikea this weekend and really just need a good chair that doesnt hurt my ass like my gaming chair does.
@@flowsy5294 Yes. It's much more comfortable. I sat in both at IKEA and found JÄRVFJÄLLET to be slightly more comfortable during a short 5 minute test, and had to buy it as it was the only one in stock. Worst decision of my life.
Buuut IKEA lack of stock for god knows how long I don’t know when I’ll be able to get the Jarv chair
its been 2 years but... you can adjust the strrngth of the recline from the big circular knob.
to be honest, I tried all three chairs at ikea and liked none of them. the Marcus doesn't have any adjustments, the Marcus sibling doesn't have a good seat depth adjustment and seat height adjustment and the smaller chair doesn't have a good seat depth adjustment either. and they all fill too stiff. will be looking for other chairs sadly.
Thank you for the video. My Jarjavvet recline became locked and I was worried it broke. Turned out it was merely locked. While the padding is more firm, I’m 6’4” and built like the dad version of a body builder (38” waist but 280 lbs) and I’ve been very happy with it.
