Oh god, I recently had an argument with my teenage kids wanting a gaming chair because of some influencer. The effort I spent trying to explain to them why the ergonomic chair that painstakingly get them a year earlier is much more healthy. Background info, I am IT guy that spent 15 years sitting 10-11 hours a day and got bulged disk, don't want that to happen to anyone, especially with my kids and these gaming chairs are enforcing all the bad habits I learned about healthy sitting in the ears of my recovery process.
@@muffininacup4060 Ok, if you want honestly my order of prefferences it is this: 1) Standing desk, you will complain for about 3 months until you get used to it, but then if you manage to keep glutes and abs engaged you are life free from low back pain. I am on this point even PC gaming on standing desk. This is cheap if you check some ikea hacks ideas. 2) I got my kids that simply refused standing a table where I got a custom desk with a semi-circle cut out for their torso so that they can rest their elbows on the table surface. Every arm is like 15kg / 33pounds that your unengaged core has to hold so getting that supported 100% is a giant plus, nobody will hold a proper pose for long and this works much much better than chair armrests that are always lower than working table. Yes some "ergonomc" chair is nice, but this table hack does more wonders here in my opinion. 3) fitball balance sitting The whole point here is that the more comfortable the chair,. the more the mussles relax and throw the load on passive body parts of spine and disks. The only healthy way is to force your muscles (especially glutes and abs as they act as counterbalance to lower back muscles) to be engaged. For me I went from bulging disk to somplete restoration thanks to standing desk and 10min excercises a day in like 2 years and saved myself from disk operation and much worse fate in later age.
@@majorpat8866 Standing desk, sit on a fitball or last resort if you really need to sit cut a semi circle to the table desk for your torso so you can rest your averate 15kg/33lb arm on the desk to eleviate the weight from your spine. No really, the more comfortable a chair is, the more you relax your muscles and the weight moves to passive ligaments like spine and dics. The only healthy sitting is the one where you activelly engages your glutes, abs and upper back so that lower back gets relaxed, and that is principally not achievable in a sitting pose. Sorry mate, physics. The best I know about is standing desk to engage the three muscle sections I mentioned, or sitting on a fitball to engage at least abs and upper back. I am personally for 2 years on a standing desk to stop the progression of my disk bulging (and it did) and I went the semi-circle custom table desk for my kids (since that is really cheap to cut out).
@@majorpat8866 not the person who posted the comment but what i will say is that personally ive found that an open (think like a net) back is so good. It keeps you cool and has some bounce so it works real well. For the seat, material is personal preference. all that said, pretty much any office chair works. My current one is a second hand office chair that i picked up for 20$ CAD, and its the most comfortable chair I own.
As someone who's 37 and can easily sit for 14+ hours a day programming and gaming, my mesh office chair is amazing. I have zero back problems. This video is spot on.
I was also in the same boat a few years ago.Using a crappy Amazon chair that kept falling apart after a year, I wanted something that would last and be better for my back. I ended up figuring that a Herman Miller was the way to go. Very pricy upfront, but a 12 year warranty makes it so it will cost the same or less than replacing all of those inferior chairs. Couple that with the fact that it is super supportive and comfortable in all the right ways. I get zero back pain even after 8 hours.
Same boat. I've been using a cheaper office chair for the last few years, and it's been fine, but I want to upgrade. Makes it kinda hard because I don't stay in one position. I like to sit cross-legged in the chair, slouched with feet up, sitting normally, etc etc. Gonna be hard to find a higher quality, higher durability chair that allows me that freedom
@@RAWDEAL064 I was thinking along the same lines as you but decided that, ultimately, I should get a chair that forces proper posture. It took a few weeks to adjust. I ended up with the high back Cosm by the way.
I was just thinking about this today , I’ve gotten cheap Amazon chairs for 100-150 each and I’ve gone through 4 in 5 years and thinking about a miller ever since I saw the warranty
I came to this same conclusion years ago regarding any product labeled "gaming". In my case it was headphones. Spending $200+ on gaming headphones that never lasted, had no replaceable parts and were generally just inferior to well known audiophile brands. It was well worth and cheaper in the long run to save for a nice pair of headphones. My Sennheiser headphones are going on 12 years old now, can replace the cables, pads etc and just as good as the day I bought them.
Audiophile brands still dont last for me. My $300 AKG's the cables went to shit, the $80 pads needed replacement, and a plastic part on 1 part broke. Sennheiser my pads went but I didn't know you could replace them and gave them away. I still need to get myself a new pair I was thinking the Sennheiser HD600XX from massdrop.
@@insaviour2783 The HD650's. I have loved them and I'd totally recommend someone to try them out. I'd hesitate to buy them blind from some place that is a hassle to make returns with though. The HD650's seem to be split in groups of either love or hate. They are open back and 300 ohm so require a DAC and AMP to push them.
I currently use Hyperx Cloud Alpha headphones, which I bought for under £100, over 3 years ago. They've held up really well, especially since they're used throughout the work week for me. The pads have cracked a bit, but that's because I've abused them a lot and not looked after them properly. Some audiophile brands are massively overpriced and not really built as well as they should be. I do like Beyerdynamic's budget range, but the lack of a detachable cable is really annoying.
This is gold for me. I got a remote job and my computer chair works for paying bills, or kids doing homework. All day, it is so bad. I also had a spinal fusion surgery 3 months ago, so that doesn't help. I don't have a big budget yet, but i can probably do a $300 chair for now. Thank you.
If you live in an urban area with a big tech presence, you can also find cheap used office chairs either on Craiglist or at liquidation centers that resell office furniture from defunct startups. In the Bay Area you can get high quality used Herman Miller Aerons for as low as $350, more than 50% less than what it would cost retail.
Lol, nothing explains startups better than expensive office chairs being pawned off for cheap to regain at least a little bit of the wasted funds @@ooogyman
I gamed and worked from home on a crappy chair for a long time. I finally invested in a quality chair and I've noticed a huge difference when it comes to comfort. I would say I regret not doing this sooner but truthfully it wasn't something I could afford at the time. I have that Mavix M9 in the video and love it.
Straight up watching for this video because of the exact same reason you listed. Currently game and work from home on a a really really old gaming chair and have had it for a long time. Looking for something good.
@dawizze1 This is a great investment considering the cheaper chairs last so many years. Assuming it fits your budget of course. I know forking over this much money for a chair can be wild. I was there at one point and was probably one of the biggest haters about it. I would always say stuff like "this chair better do my work for me at that price" 😂. It does absolutely 0 work for me but I'm really comfy and don't get that butt and back ache my old chair gave me. Best of luck and hope you find something you really like.
It's because gaming chairs were first designed for racing sims. That's why the first gaming chair companies have names like DxRacer and NeedforSeat. It was just meant to imitate the driving experience to make it more immersive. The look took off, so they just went with it as the default design for any type of gaming chair. -Ryan
They're also designed so the driver can sit in them for hours on end without issues. So they're actually very comfortable if they fit your body shape and you don't have to move much.
@@btodtvor maybe the gaming isnt office work and having rigid frame that holds position is desired ... when gaming i dont need to reach for a copier, phone on the desk write a note or sign a piece of paper ... what i want is to find a position and then spend 10+ hours in that same position without suffering any fatigue from the chair. which means rigid solid chair that DOES NOT FLEX ... exactlyu the same thing as racing seats in cars that are designed to keep drivers comfortable for hours on end even in moving vehicle that goes over bumps on the road. and if someone has issues with side "railing" on a gaming chair it just means they chose wrong size of one, just get one with wider body.
You say car seats are comfortable, but I raise you that most gaming chairs are not car seats, they just look like it. Even the cheapest car will have a ton of high density moss, load of back support, and adjustable headrest up to 7 feet. Gimme a car seat on a stick, even with half the padding (since you are not moving over inequal terrain) and I'll be more than happy.
Swapped gaming chair for office chair when I needed to sit in it more then 4 hours when on home office. Never looked back. Also the leather imitation is awfull in the summer. The office meshed chair is way more comfortable
@@Dukenukem leather imitation is awful in ANY context: 1. Gets hot in hot days 2. Does not retain heat in cold days 3. Despite what vegan douches may delude themselves with, it’s more environmentally harmful than real leather
I purchased a HM Aeron chair around 1999. Best. Purchase. Ever. It both looks and sits fantastic. And the cool part about a premium chair like this is that I can get maintenance done on it. It's a design classic that is still produced, there are still parts available for it. After 15-20 years the coasters needed replacement (soft rubber will wear away), the plastic lumbar support was torn, a handle had broken off and the mechanism needed readjustment. I had it all fixed and the chair is as good as new after 25 years and I still enjoy it daily for more hours than I care to admit. In total I think I spend less than 2000 euros over 25 years for top quality seating that will probably last me another 25, absolutely worth it.
@@rayzerotnever think of a purchase in absolute 1-time value, it’s a way of thinking that predisposes you to stupid decisions, basically preventing yourself from making investments that have to do with your body or comfort rather than something easy to measure like money. Everything decays and breaks, always measure in the price you’re paying per month or year to keep something up. I tend to measure the price of things in netflixes, or units of 10€ per month. How many Netflixes does it cost me to eat this often, to keep using my choices of cosmetics, etc. 80€ a year for a good chair is a fantastic deal. It’s less than 1 Netflix. And the price per year deteriorates with time, that’s the opposite of Netflix! You just can’t think rationally if you don’t account for chronology. Also, if the less than 2000€ chair saves your back, it paid for itself in a week’s worth of averted pain :)
For years I wanted a gaming chair... now that I finally decided to spend some money to upgrade my gaming setup, I don't know what to buy. I did some research and a lot of people are saying NOT to buy a gaming chair. I'm tall and "semi" heavy (110kg). So I was aiming at something sturdy. And that is usally a gaming chair. However... I feel like an office ergonomic chair will simply be more comfortable. I did some research to decide and now I'm even less decided than before xD
I'm in the same situation. A month passed since you wrote this comment, have you bought anything? Any advices?

@@igors1234 I bought an office chair less than a year ago, and regretted it almost instantly. It is now broken. The gaming chair that I had before that held way longer (although the cushioning on the arm rests gave out too quickly). From what I can see, and what I dislike about this office chair the most, is that when you recline in an office chair, the seat tilts back too (even a Steelworks Gesture for over a thousand euros seems to behave that way)… gaming chairs have an independently-reclining back. Killer feature for me. So now I will replace this office chair with a gaming chair.
@@igors1234 yeah, so I bought Symino gaming chair. In general I am happy with it. It is comffortable and seems sturdy. Tho it is a bit stiff... it's not a deal breaker. And I'm use to it by now. I'm tall and this one is big enough for me to sit on. To be honest I had high expectations for a gaming chair and I was a bit disappointed at first... because like I said, it's a bit stiff. But in general I'm used to it right now and I can sit for hours if needed. Time will tell how durable it will be :) I bought it in June.. so it's only 2-3 months. We'll see :)
Had a cheap gaming chair for a few years, was really not good, then I upgraded to a pretty expensive nice office chair that was the same one I had at work, it felt comfortable for ~8h at work so I thought it would be nice at home too, but I didn't like it so I sold it and bought a secret lab titan evo, and it was much more comfortable. I also like to sit with crossed legs, and that was super uncomfortable in my office chair but feels great in my secretlab I think there are better chairs than gaming chairs, but the titan evo isn't a bad chair. I'd never buy a random gaming chair that's just made to look like a car seat though
It’s like how bakeries amp up the price when it’s for a wedding, so pro tip: when buying the food and decoration don’t tell the vendors is for a wedding! It will be much cheaper for the same thing
My wife once gave me a DXRacer for my birthday, and it saddens me to say it was the most uncomfortable chair I ever had. Not only that, but it lost its rubber on the armrests in nearly six months of use, and the racing chair bucket just dissolved after a year. I never planned to buy one. I used a used chair from my old company before, and it was still more usable after five years of heavy office use than one new DXRacer after a year. Now I use a nice office chair from Köhl, which was the brand of the old chair I had before. I think, there are two types of people that have gaming chairs: streamers who get sponsored or people who don’t know what they’re buying. And, to be honest, I look down on people who think the whole "gaming" branding means quality or something positive; it's just a way to squeeze extra money out of people.
@@DerFreiegedanke "gaming laptop" is the one that always gets me, even normal office laptops often have all kinds of throttling to keep them from frying. Though tbh I've never been into games that required a real GPU (too young to remember when that was basically all games, sorry haha)
@@traveller23e I failed for that once but after some troubles i figured out that thing is just really shitty designed, as expected, and you always need to run all fans on maximum overdrive, that things is loud as hell but now does not die during gameplay. Its nearly 8 years old but still running. PoE works fine and some things like Valheim also.
I think the main difference is, how many gaming chairs manage to last past say 5 years? Most will have the faux leather peeling, the arm rests failing, the seating going flat etc etc. I'm pretty happy with my GT Omega chair as it seems to about the same quality as any other (steel frame, cold foam etc) but was £220 rather than £300-500. Now after half a decade however the seat is starting to go flat, all the seams in the seating have rippedthrough the faux leather. To be fair, If I can get another seat for it I'd happily sit in for another half a decade. My sitting posture although not great doesn't result in back aches and seems to work with most chairs. The reason for me to go for an office chair is that they actually seem to last. There's Steelcase and Herman Miller chairs in their 'teens' that functionally are still the same as a new one, and they come with warranties that back that up. Gaming chairs mostly seem to be 2-3 years of warranty (warranty that doesn't cover pretty much everything that will go wrong because they'll write it down to normal wear and tear even when it isn't)
I'm nearly 5 years into my SecretLab Omega, almost still like new. One arm has started to crack due to me leaning, and the pillow has a hole. Other than that, I'm amazed how long it's lasted.
Yeah mine is about 6years old and the foam in the seat is completely flattened, it is not a comfortable chair anymore, the leather has held up fairly well though
Why would a 3-year warranty not cover normal wear and tear? Isn't the whole idea of a warranty to guarantee that the item is of sufficient quality to last a given time period under normal use?
@@traveller23e Check the warranty of some brands, most will not cover fabric/faux leather wearing out and consider it normal wear and tear. The warranty is for when things actually affect the functionality (arm falling off would be covered for example). In most of the EU they'd be legally obliged to cover those kind of issues in the first place and they're just doing the bare minimum.
I guess mileage may vary. I bought an older Titan with lumbar suport and omnidirectional armrest adjustments before they stopped making them and hiked the price, but considering that my usual seating position is partially reclined, with my feet propped up on the subwoofer under my desk, it definitely does its job and I couldn't really find any office chairs within the same range that suited my particular use case. It also held up remarkably well. Other than the foam on the armrests coming apart from the plastic here and there, it has no tangible damage or heavy wear. That being said, at the current rates I'd definitely look for something else if I ever was to replace it.
I'd say SecretLab is an exception to the usual quality and ergonomic woes of most cheaper gaming chairs. They do make good stuff, but at the end of the day it is a very firm seat and some might something more cushy or flexible. And at that price point you might as well look into a good office chair unless you're dead set on the larger seat you can 'sit' on.
As a 6'6 (198 cm) tall guy my primary concern was proper lumbar support for my height, and the existence of a headrest (preference). The Titan Evo XL fit the bill and I'm very happy with it. That said, if I ever had to buy another chair I will take more time looking into larger office chairs
This!!! I don't know how many people sit but office chairs good god. My so called premium erginomic chair at my office wants me to sit like a crash test dummy. back and legs in a perfect L.
UH.... I must say thank you. After seeing you move the armrest on the Titan chair, I now know that I can adjust them front and back and side to side. I have had mine for over 4 years now and never know it could do that lol. Also I don't find the bucket seat to cause me discomfort at all but to some it might. I have used office chairs before I got my Titan and I will never go back. Being able to adjust the arms to my liking and the sturdier padding of the Titan feel so nice. The office chair I used before made me feel constrained but since it was free, was my folks old office chair, but I hated it so much that I shelled out for my Titan.
Great video as usual. 2 things to note. Steelcase Amia owner here (love the chair by the way I got in 2011 and it has been incredible.) I still find my self grabbing my gaming chair around once a day for a specific task. I also have an extra one for you guessed it my sim racing setup. After it’s all sim racing I want the realism. So that is a point you could have added it is great for people who sim race and want to feel as close to possible and get as much realism as possible. 2nd point, you noted the full recline function is trash. However that’s the reason I grab the chair. I have a tall padded thing I use as a footrest I lay my feet on it and then use my monitor arm to get my big 49 inch monitor high and pointed downward. I use my full recline grab my controller and play laid back games with my controller laying back in a comfortable position just having a good time. So yes an office chair is so much more comfy, however there is specific occasions where a gaming chair is better, I feel like my 2 situations are the only ones. You could also maybe say for looks but I would still rather just get a cool looking office chair.
I’m rocking a lower priced lazyboy “executive” office chair from Costco. Got it for $200 and of any office chair that I’ve experienced in that price range, it’s absolutely stellar. It’s not flexible, but it is wide and I’m 6ft2 - it goes up just perfectly to the top of my shoulders with a bit of extra padding up top for leaning my neck back on to stretch. My sister bought herself a secret labs gaming chair - one of the racing looking ones that so many streamers have. When I was over at her place, I tried it and it honestly kinda sucked. I’d rather pull the sparco seat out of my mx5 and use that because it’s way comfier (and wholly unsuitable to sitting at a computer). This video encapsulates this experience that I’ve had
I bought a fairly low expense gaming chair from a large computer retailer in 2016. Only complaint I have is that within a few years the super super thin covering imitation leather just flaked off. In terms of comfort.. probably the most comfortable chair I have ever owned.. that thing looks a mess now.. the cover all flaked off.. still dont want to get rid of it though.. will have to , because it looks awful now... but in all other respects, it still is as good as when I bought it. My own personal experience as someone who works in an office on some good office chairs for 8 hrs / day ... and someone who sits for long periods in my gaming chair.. I'd rather sit in my gaming chair! But , would agree that if you are working.. as in typing none stop.. or doing work.. you're getting in a chair that supports you in the working position rather than a relaxing position.. thats an office chair over a gaming chair. But if you're not working bolt-up close to your desk for 4-5 hrs straight at a time.. gaming chair wins hands-down for me.
Used to play in a recliner as a kid living back with my parents. Then when they got rid of that. I just played on the couch. An office chair mimics those feelings best for me and makes me feel the most comfortable in as well
Currently using a gaming chair, not because I was specifically looking for one, but because I just tried different chairs within my (very humble) student budget and the one that was most comfortable without going over budget simply happened to be a gaming chair on a discount. My only complaint is the armrests being made from some kind of brittle plastic which has started falling apart at the seams, leading to me wrapping them in duct tape to keep them together and cover the tears.
The fact that so many gaming chairs are these bucket seats infuriates me. I bought a DX Racer Classic XL years ago and love it ... but its getting to its last legs. Been trying to find one that has a high enough weight (At least 350lbs) limit inside a $500 budget and all the chairs I find now are these bucket seat. I have wider shoulders those buckets dig into my shoulder blades. The Classic XL wasnt a bucket, it was more of a SUV seat and it was great, if I could find it new I would buy it again. I've looked for office chairs too, but I constantly find that they either dont have a high back or they dont allow forward tilt so that my knees can be comfortably below my waste.
I'm glad you mention people who are big and tall. I tried office chairs for years. And they broke under my weight. I'm over 300 pounds and nobody I saw builds them for people my size. I finally got a Secretlab chair and it has lasted for longer than my previous 3 chairs combined and still going.
the problem is office chairs basic angle is 105 degrees compare to gaming chairs who u can choose from 90 degrees to around 170 and i feel like when i game and hard focusing on it, the 90 degrees just feel more focused and into the game and when i tried office chair, yeah they are alot better in comfrtoable, but i just cant see myself focusing on the game and leaning that far back... what do u think ?
what kind of chair would I want to get if I enjoy sitting cross legged sometimes or with one foot under my body, and I also use blankets a lot as it gets rather cold in my home during winter. I've been having lots of back issues with my current chair.
Stop sitting cross legged sometimes or with one foot under you body and your back issues will fix after some time. Youre just hurting yourself and asking why it hurts.
I've used many gaming chairs and office chairs and ended up being more comfortable in a old styled second hand armchair designed with posture support. It is a very not mobile way of sitting since your not on wheels, but as i didn't like my chair moving out of my preferred position for it every time i get up and sit down since i like to stand and pace around while thinking, it works for me. The stability of a armchair was better for me and its a lot lower to the ground which a takes some practice getting used too, but yea having your feet planted on the ground is so much nicer for posture over long periods of time sitting. So while I kind of have to agree good office chairs are honestly the best option for the most part but if that still isn't working out I guess I just wanted to say that dedicated support armchairs are awesome too and not just for older people or people with back problems.
Great video, but just like most videos to do with chairs it's usually US where as I'm in the uk and it can be harder to find the links and chairs you guys talk about for obvious reason, different regions
I spent £250 on a secondhand chair that retails for £600+ from someone on eBay - guy was just upgrading to a newer chair that better suited his height so this secondhand one was almost brand new and not used much. Best purchase I've made for my home office/den. It's always worth checking to see if anyone nearby is selling their chairs secondhand, especially after the COVID lockdowns and people gradually moving back into their company offices rather than WFH.
My issue is that I just can't get comfortable in an "office" chair. I've had a $2k Herman Miller Embody. I hated it. The relatively hard thin back is uncomfortable. I need something more substantive behind me. Currently looking at the Evo and hoping it can give me the best of both worlds.
Exactly the same I knew from a similar explanation years ago... someone tried to gift me a gaming chair for my birthday few years ago and I explained almost all of these. This video not only explained it well but also give some insightful and useful tips I didn't know
Thank you for talking me out of buying a titan evo. Their marketing really messed with me. What's the best chair to get in that price range, so ~500€ in Europe?
I got an Embody 2 years ago, and yes - it's extremely expensive. However, it's without a shadow of a doubt one of the best purchases I've ever made. After a span of roughly 8 years of debilitating back pain brought on by years of sitting on cheaper office chairs (think the kind you find in Staples for the $200-$300 range), I decided to take the plunge on an Embody. Not only have I not had any back pain whatsoever since investing in a Herman Miller chair, I don't get any leg cramps, my feet don't fall asleep, I end my work day without feeling stiff, sore, or fatigued, and my posture when not in the chair even feels healthier. The price may be a huge hurdle to overcome, and it's easy to be skeptical of a chair making such a massive difference, but it's absolutely worth it. Something else to note is that when you buy your chair from Herman Miller, they come with an all-inclusive 12 year warranty - that alone serves as testament to the quality of their product.
As someone on a standard budget (around 100) the reason I went for a gaming chair is because it had not much but some padding on the seat. Which cheap office chairs seem to be designed to punish you for having an office job by making it incredibly uncomfortable. I guess if I did have 500 - 700 to spend on a chair which is already a laughable amount of money for normal people to throw on a chair. Yes I guess an office chair takes over again.
I had the same experience after buying & using a gaming chair. The bucket design was terrible for my size, the reclining function only makes the chair less balanced due to my weight, I rarely use the included foot rest even when it's designed for when the chair is reclined, and the hydraulic stand gave out way too quickly. I stuck with office chairs afterwards.
Sorry if this isnt the best place to ask, but figured I would try. I had a pretty bad accident that makes sitting upright in a chair rather painful. So sitting at a desk has been something I have to do minimally. My chair is old and not great, so I've been looking to replace it. The main thing I need is just for the butt cushion to be quite soft, and enough room for easy position adjustment. I've considered just getting a recliner because of this, but there has to be a better option than that. I need something that is soft and somewhat spacious, as i need to readjust my seating position very frequently, so I know I should be looking office chairs. I'm just not sure where to start. If anyone here has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it. :)
I personally prefer recliners, but if its gonna be used in an office setting, maybe an office chair with a kick back stand for your feet. Or just add a cushion to an ergonomic chair. I know this is a late reply, but thought I could help
I appreciate the reply all the same. I actually watched some more videos from these guys and decided to pick up a Haworth Soji (95% Polyester Cushion) during their Black Friday sale. Having a recliner for my desk would have been very cumbersome as I'm in an apartment, so not a ton of space. Although I do plan on getting a recliner for my living room, so it also seemed a bit silly to get 2 in the end. Lol. The chair has been great so far. Still breaking it in, and it makes me wish I had an adjustable desk. A foot rest is something I will be looking into, but am ultimately happy with the choice. :)
@@itranscendencei7964 good for you man, I'm glad you're happy with your choice, just an fyi for the recliner. If you're gonna get a leather one, make sure it's genuine leather or else it'll start ripping apart within a year
I'd love to see a Embody Gaming vs Digital Knit Fern video, and with a bit more focus on slouching and comfort rather than ergonomics! As I'm chronically ill, I can't go to nearby shops to test out the chairs myself, especially when they often don't have these 2 specific models :(
Yeah i really feel like he puts emphasis on things that dont really matter like being able to swing your arms and stretch in your chair. What matters most is being comfortable in different positions you actually stay in and the ability to still use the keyboard/mouse. You could also argue its better to just get up and walk around a minute than stretch in your chair.
I've had a number of different chairs over the years. A fully reclining gaming chair could have a usecase if you visit LAN parties (if those still exists). A number of years ago I bought a KAB K4, an expensive 24H chair. Suddenly I had support for my arms with adjustable arm rests! It was worth the price just for that feature alone.
Hey I noticed the new Asus Destrier in the thumbnail and I wanted to ask if you can maybe do a stand alone review. Thinking of getting the chair but there are not enough reviews or even Reddit reviews. Plz plz make one! Thanks
The laying back segment is anxiety inducing, I can't imagine EVER wanting to sleep like that! Appreciate the info, my chairs been on it's death bed for like 2 years now... so I'll keep this in mind when it's finally time for the upgrade!
I have a gaming chair, I want to upgrade to a nice office chair but I have used the full back tilt once, I injured my back and having my chair tilted back up against my bed so I could lay in the chair with more support and ever so slightly tilled up with my feet in the bed was the only way I could get to sleep for a couple nights. very uncommon use case obviously but not sure how I would have gotten to sleep if I didn't have the chair
I remember looking for a chair when I first moved out of the house. I wanted a gaming chair but it wasn't in my budget, so I settled for a white manager/office chair of leather. Super comfy, I loved sitting in it.
As someone who has Braum racing seats in my car, I have no issue with bucket seat designs. I never really thought they were a hindrance or restricted movement where ir counts. The only thing of note about bucket seats is that in a car, the seat traps heat rather well but I don't imagine this being an issue in an office or room.
Hi, coder (and GaMeR, I guess) here. Honestly, the thing that changed my life with office chairs was the mesh weave back. HOLY MOLY what a miracle difference. Night and day. Never going back, it's just SO much more comfortable than anything else I've ever sat on for long periods of time
Now try some music studio headphones like a Sennheiser or a simple AKG, you will be surprised how gear designed specifically towards professionals of any given field are always vastly superior to this cheap "gaming" OEM(look this up) slop they push down our throats.
@@Sewersyrup I think he means about the breathability of mesh versus, say, a high-backed leather chair, even if both are office-oriented. They does not detract in ANY way from the validity of what you said, though
I'm a fairly small guy (only 5'5") but had a gaming chair for a while and got tired of it due to pretty much everything you mentioned: no lumbar support, rigid, uncompromising, and just not a good experience. I think that I'll buy an office chair as my next office/gaming chair.
This video showed up on my recommended front page, and I couldn't have asked for anything better tonight! I own a Secret Lab Titan Evo, and while I'm pleased to see it called out as the exception more than once, I have been looking for something more comfortable. Ergonomic office chairs have had my attention, but they are the same or greater investment as what I already own, so I wasn't quite sold. I am now. I was hoping to get some brands and models from this video, and I appreciate you name dropping some of the best for me to look into.
Great video, exactly the information I was looking for. You've convinced me which type of chair to get, and if I was US based I'd definitely go with your company!
1:54 As a sim racer myself... I'm in a weird niche that has enough of the equipment to enjoy the simulation but unfortunately I have not mounted the seat. So this is actually my situation lol
Why does every chair I sit in make it so my body presses against the back and gradually levers against my mass and slides my butt closer and closer to the edge. Is it posture? Weight distribution? Am I just sitting wrong? I’ve tried to same thing in higher end chair and the effect is slower, but I’d still end up sliding down/ constantly adjusting if I had to be in it for 8 hours
As a former IT guy and still a current gamer, I've long learned that most mid-range office chairs beats out high-end gaming chairs, for long marathon computer-sessions. So imagine my joy, when I found a high-end high-backed faux-leather covered office chair at the thrift store for sale at 1% of original price. Most comfy chair I've ever had. Only which it had a head/neck rest. But the high back does compensate for it fairly well.
I often use the recline function on my gaming chair. It's good for watching movies or long videos. I am a tall guy, so my legs have no problem reaching the floor, but I can always just rest them on something. What you said about gaming chairs being better for tall people is true. Office chairs hurt my neck.
An office chair has completely different requirements. The upholstery of these chairs must last for at least one shift or working day. In addition, office chairs must allow you to sit for long periods without causing health problems. A gaming chair does not have to meet any of these requirements.
Exactly what are you claiming is required of a gaming chair? What are the different requirements between an office chair and a gaming chair? At the same price point an office chair will almost always out perform a gaming chair in any category other than trendy looks. Office chairs are designed to be a tool used by professionals who expect a tool to do it's job well. Gaming chairs are a fashion accessory sold to impressionable people who don't understand the concept of cause and effect
@@blackoak4978 Quote "Exactly what are you claiming is required of a gaming chair?" - Noo.. TLDR - Gaming Chairs don't have to meet any requirements. A Gaming Chair has its typical style. usually a swivel chair with a long backrest and a arm rest. All other features are based on imagination and advertising claims. An office chair, on the other hand, is a work tool and must meet the minimum requirements as such. This must also be proven through tests.
Why are the requirements different? I want to sit comfortably for 8 hours when I'm gaming on my free weekends. I don't want health problems after sitting for a prolonged time. I don't see your point.
@@dontknowbutcare I'm not quite sure, what you mean. you talk business chair oder gaming chair? The term ‘gaming chair’ is not protected. Anything can be a ‘gaming chair’, basically anything you can sit on while gaming is a ‘gaming chair’. An office chair, on the other hand, is a seat for performing an activity or work while seated. There are rules and laws governing work and occupational safety that are different in each country. India/Pakistan is a good example where there are no rules/laws for work safety. Therefore, people work with what they have or can afford or without any protection for their health and body.
The new colamy showed up in this video-you guys mentioned it in your Amazon deals video as well. Any chance you’ll do a deeper look at this chair in the future?
It’s probably worth trying both types and getting what works for your personal situation. For example, I’ve got a ruptured lumbar disc, and a $3000 ergonomic chair setup by an ergonomic specialist at work actually aggregated my symptoms. However the lumbar support in my titan gaming chair hits everything perfectly and i don’t have issues. So much so i just brought the Titan to the office.
That was my situation with my billion year old Ikea, served me over a decade till the back literally fell off. 😅 That thing's fake leather and lining under the chair was shedding all over the place but the comfort was unmatched, I lean and sleep on it as someone over 100 kilos.
The only office chairs I have experience with are sadly the cheap-ish fake leather ones that start falling apart after a couple years of use. It's also really hard to find chairs _without_ lumbar support, which doesn't work for my spine.
@@GoombaNL it feels amazing . i weight 100 kg , 178 cm height . so i am for sure on the heavy side , i mostly game and sit on the chair 8 hours minimum daily , it got rid of the back pain that the gaming chairs gave me , lumbar support is amazing , u can flex ur back as much as u want without fearing it would break, also i love cracking my back on it lmao . i mean .... it's just amazing
Couldn't agree more. I'm not a big guy but I have chronic back pain. My wife bought the Logitech/ Herman Miller embody for me as a 40th birthday gift. I'd say there was probably a two week period getting the chair adjusted to how I liked it, but after that it's easily been the best chair I've ever sat in. Getting out of that. Majorly reduces back and hip aches. Mighty pricey but so worth it for your back and hips
@user-rr9ic3xb6z How long did you try it for? For my first 2 weeks, I was unsure I liked it at all for the same reason, but once I got the back adjusted right, I couldn't love it any more than I do now. For me, it was about 2 weeks to get it just right.
TLDR: you use a gaming chair to do an office function, so you should just get a proper office chair designed for that purpose. Buy for function, not looks. This man knows what he's talking about! Great video
I've not been able to make office chairs work, perhaps due to my height? Gaming chairs just seem more comfortable (at least for me), and I like the feeling of being held in place like in a car. I seem to be able to sit in car seats (bucket, not rear bench) for long periods without discomfort too. That being said maybe I haven't tried an expensive enough office chair to give them a fair shot?
I have been preaching the content of this video for years now. And throughout those years my words have been met almost exclusively with sighs, eye-rolls, or both at the same time. Anyway... thank you for making this video.
Biggest problem with all of these chairs: they are too expensive! I really wish I could just find a nice, simple chair, that supports more weight that the regular 100kg, that seems to be the norm.
I just googled it actually and there's alot of options for over 200kg holding weight and they are cheap too so idk what the heck you are talking about lol I was expecting stuff like 1k but there are some in the $200 or less. It's a complaint to complaint at this point
@@SemekiIzuio If you are american, they are probably more easily found. Like everything else there. But it's not the same on the EU side, where everything is more expensive, simply due to taxes. Trust me, I've looked around, and it's not easy to find a chair like that. (Also, 200 dollars - or about 180 euros - is not something I'd call cheap.)
@@DisgruntledDoomer Get a gym membership it will help you after a while. Or eat less food. Youll have more budget for a better chair, while losing weight.
I like this got recommended to me after watching Ludwig mention why he prefers office chairs over gaming ones - thank you very much for explaining further ❤
This is not me trying to say you are wrong, but just talking about why I made my choice. I specifically got a gaming chair because I needed something to help me sit up straight that wasn't as awful to sit in as a chair from my kitchen table or a folding chair or something. Office chairs (especially within my price range as a computer science student) didn't provide enough support to my back unless I was leaning pretty far back and therefore looking down at my monitors instead of straight ahead at them. Rather than buying some new mount to raise and tilt my monitors to accommodate this lean back or trying to always sit very far back in my chair so the lumbar support would /maybe/ keep my back in a good position, I chose a chair that I could set to how far I want to lean back and not budge. Now I can actually lean back into my chair without having the chair move with me and put me into a position I don't want to be in. And when I'm sitting forward, both an office chair or a gaming chair would of course do the job. If I wasn't looking for this /one specific thing/ I 100% thing I would have chosen an office chair, for all of the reasons you mentioned and from all the recommendations I've got irl and online. EDIT: Also yeah fuck those pillows. And no, I never lay the seat ALL the way back like that either.
When I did my Pc gaming setup I did a ton of research on a lot of things, the chair honestly wasn't one of those and I regretted it so much. When I first sat on the hard material and the pillow was uncomfortable on my back I was like yeah I fell for the "gaming" label on this one last thing. The chair is much more important than I thought at first and we should go for what seems comfortable people, not the one that looks cool
Back and neck pain for 20 years with office chairs supposedly made to avoid these. Bought a science whatever gaming chair, no issue whatsoever anymore. Sometimes neck, but that's if I play 6h without any movement or stretching.
You baited me haha. I was really hoping to see the Destrier review in this video, but I guess I'll have to wait :(. I'm staying tuned, even more hyped up than before ahah.
There haven't been many available to try. Seems like they limited how many were available to the general public. We buy almost all of the things we review so it took a while to track one down. I had to drive 3 hours to get it from the nearest Micro Center, when there was "1" actually available -Greg
The reason I prefer a gaming chair (currently the secretlabs titan) over most office chairs is that it feels nicer to sit in while just lounging and/or gaming at my PC at home. I don't like the mesh-backs that a lot of office chairs come with as it kind of feels like I'm sitting in a draft (even though the temperature is comfortable in the room in general). I also want the high back-rest rather than just a neck-rest like most office chairs even though that might not be the most ergonomic choice. I do understand the advantages and differences of the ergonomic chairs as I spend probably 80% of my time at work in an office chair, but it just doesn't feel the same. If I was working from home, I'd most likely get an office-chair as well as my secretlabs chair and switch between them (I also have a sit-stand desk so I can easily adjust the desk to fit the task). I don't know, maybe I'm a gamer-girl at heart lol
I went from a DXRacer to an Embody and man, that experience was night and day. In the DX, my back started hurting after a year of use due to it wearing out. I have the Embody for 2 years now and it still feels as comfortable as the day I got it. Sure, it's not cheap, but ergo chairs are an investment into one's long-term health. I rather paid the money for a good chair than worry about searching for a chiropractor later.

Love to get the Aeron chair but cost $3K. I currently sit in an office chair from Ikea which cost $450, it has armrests that swivel sideways but do not lock.
The gaming chair holds you in place, like a racing car seat does. Think about it; an actual gaming pro is spending 30-45 minutes locked in on a game, pushed forward, then they break for a while in a real tournament on stage. If you're gaming four hours and hours it should obviously be more like an office chair, as that is designed for that use case. Like a racing styled seat in a car makes sense for a race car driver, but would be wildly uncomfortable for anyone making a daily commute or road trip
Ever sat in a racecar seat? Racing seats are actually comfortable. In NASCAR those guys can spend up to 5 hours at once in their seat. Sure it's not upright like a gaming chair but their seats are comfy. Real racing seats are actually really comfy. Most professional race car drivers spend hours almost everyday practicing on their sim rig for the next race. I think the most important thing is finding the chair you think is comfortable whether it's a gaming chair or office chair. Typically the amount spent is the quality you will get. Cheaper office chairs will be better then cheaper gaming chairs but after a certain point, it's what you like better
Where I live, office chairs are twice as expensive as gaming chairs so no brainer for me. Also I spent years sitting on plastic and metal garden and dinner chair, come on.
I had a cheap-ish office chair provided by my employer. I ended up having hip problems. I had a gaming chair at home that I bought for around $200 and it has helped immensely.
I always wondered about the argument about trampoline / mesh chairs vs padded. I love my trampoline chair for ventilation, but always wondered if I’m giving up ergonomics for ventilation. Would be awesome if you did a break down about the two types. Ps gaming chairs have always reeked of marketing over substance.
I am 62 years old and don't care about keeping my feet on the floor when sitting, good chair posture doesn't matter, it's a myth.. I want my feet on the desk, on the desk support etc. I also want to lean far back while I watch RUclips, so I like a chair that reclines a long way back. I have used office chairs for over 5 decades, and a gaming chair for 6 years. I love the gaming chair for my gaming and leisure, I like all the options the chair provides. I am a sloth, I have been in trouble from teachers, my parents, and my wives all my life for hiking on chairs and sitting with terrible posture. Having said the above, I am extremely fit, I start everyday with at least an 8km walk which includes inclines, this straightens out the spine and stretches it. Plus, I have done strength exercises from when I was eight years old. I have never had a bad back or any discomfort from bad chair posture. Chair pain/discomfort comes from being in the main unfit, not getting up enough to stretch and a chair that is probably too cheap. Sitting with bad posture doesn't cause any injury, being lazy and not exercising does, get moving people and your pain will disappear. I sit in a chair for about 8 to 10 hours a day as I game a lot and work a bit. lol Anyway, that's my opinion.
I recently saw one of those clickbaity news articles they run when there's not much going on, and it said based on a recent study simply taking the stairs rather than an elevator on a regular basis greatly decreases ones chance of heart failure (I don't remember the exact numbers). Which while it makes sense, it also implies the modern western lifestyle is so incredibly unhealthy doing literally anything at all makes a big difference.

Considering you are kinda an expert by this point, what are the most important details about sitting right?
@@muffininacup4060 Ok, if you want honestly my order of prefferences it is this:
1) Standing desk, you will complain for about 3 months until you get used to it, but then if you manage to keep glutes and abs engaged you are life free from low back pain.
3) fitball balance sitting
The whole point here is that the more comfortable the chair,. the more the mussles relax and throw the load on passive body parts of spine and disks.
Do you have any suggestions on a good ergonomic chair.

I still need to get myself a new pair I was thinking the Sennheiser HD600XX from massdrop.
which set of Sennheiser headphones do you have!? I'm in the market for a new headset.
Best general advice indeed: avoid "gaming" products, they're usually worse than the non-gaming alternatives.
Adding "gaming" to a thing's description usually just means it has a higher price, a fancy paint job, and some impractical design choices.

I don’t know how this concept of a seat meant to cradle people in a moving vehicle somehow became a thing to sell people sitting at home.

It's because gaming chairs were first designed for racing sims. That's why the first gaming chair companies have names like DxRacer and NeedforSeat. It was just meant to imitate the driving experience to make it more immersive. The look took off, so they just went with it as the default design for any type of gaming chair. -Ryan

Yes the seat tilts with the back, it is done on purpose, what is the problem with that?
Had a cheap gaming chair for a few years, was really not good, then I upgraded to a pretty expensive nice office chair that was the same one I had at work, it felt comfortable for ~8h at work so I thought it would be nice at home too, but I didn't like it so I sold it and bought a secret lab titan evo, and it was much more comfortable. I also like to sit with crossed legs, and that was super uncomfortable in my office chair but feels great in my secretlab
I think there are better chairs than gaming chairs, but the titan evo isn't a bad chair. I'd never buy a random gaming chair that's just made to look like a car seat though
It’s like how bakeries amp up the price when it’s for a wedding, so pro tip: when buying the food and decoration don’t tell the vendors is for a wedding! It will be much cheaper for the same thing
I bought a gaming chair once...key word ONCE.
Smart decision to keep it to one time :) -Greg
I regret buying a gaming chair....
My DX Racer chair is from 2016 and all it has wrong is peeling. Everything else is fine.
You are the most experienced chair sitter I’ve ever laid eyes upon. Simply amazing skill, bravo!
Months late, but that's an awesome hobby. Props.

An office chair mimics those feelings best for me and makes me feel the most comfortable in as well
Spoiler alert: never get a gaming chair
I got Secretlab Titan Evo and I think it's worth it

Currently using a gaming chair, not because I was specifically looking for one, but because I just tried different chairs within my (very humble) student budget and the one that was most comfortable without going over budget simply happened to be a gaming chair on a discount.
My only complaint is the armrests being made from some kind of brittle plastic which has started falling apart at the seams, leading to me wrapping them in duct tape to keep them together and cover the tears.
5:04 perfect evaluation of the titan evo chair: punching its rock hard seat that kills your tailbone.
I recommend the DX Wood racer
I'm glad you mention people who are big and tall. I tried office chairs for years. And they broke under my weight. I'm over 300 pounds and nobody I saw builds them for people my size. I finally got a Secretlab chair and it has lasted for longer than my previous 3 chairs combined and still going.
the problem is office chairs basic angle is 105 degrees compare to gaming chairs who u can choose from 90 degrees to around 170
and i feel like when i game and hard focusing on it, the 90 degrees just feel more focused and into the game
and when i tried office chair, yeah they are alot better in comfrtoable, but i just cant see myself focusing on the game and leaning that far back...
what do u think ?
Just about to say this
Great advice, I'm looking to upgrade my office chair and I love its reclining mode, it seems if I went with a gaming chair I'd lose this.
what kind of chair would I want to get if I enjoy sitting cross legged sometimes or with one foot under my body, and I also use blankets a lot as it gets rather cold in my home during winter. I've been having lots of back issues with my current chair.

the herman miller embody has a wide and flat seat; i sit one leg under or cross legged sometimes. can't do that on the aeron.
Secretlabs titan evo. I use it, and I do all the things you said.
Currently looking at the Evo and hoping it can give me the best of both worlds.
did you end up getting one? I am thinking the same thing
Get an Anda seat kasier
That’s a very fair comment surprised no one else has made it
@TRBigBen I was surprised as well, I didn't spend 500 on my entire home office setup (excluding latop) let alone a chair.
If you're gonna get a leather one, make sure it's genuine leather or else it'll start ripping apart within a year
I've been sitting on a wooden IKEA Gilbert kitchen chair, 11 hours a day for the past 14 years now, do you think I should upgrade?
The best chair for gaming is a comfy recliner chair with a cup holder.
I switched to a recliner years ago. Full on upholstered huge thing. Never going back to either gaming or office chairs. And my cats are happy too
I'd love to see a Embody Gaming vs Digital Knit Fern video, and with a bit more focus on slouching and comfort rather than ergonomics!
Thanks
Coming this Sunday -Greg
I’ve been on a secret lab for half a decade, and I find it quite comfortable. The ability basically lay down completely is sweet too
I remember looking for a chair when I first moved out of the house.
Is it bad that I sit with my knees up or cross legged in my chair? That's why I try to choose larger chairs because I like to do that
Hi, coder (and GaMeR, I guess) here.

I was hoping to get some brands and models from this video, and I appreciate you name dropping some of the best for me to look into.

incredible video! i went from a stool to a gaming chair to a office chair in my bedroom, both chairs changed my life and i’m grateful for both
Why does every chair I sit in make it so my body presses against the back and gradually levers against my mass and slides my butt closer and closer to the edge. Is it posture? Weight distribution? Am I just sitting wrong? I’ve tried to same thing in higher end chair and the effect is slower, but I’d still end up sliding down/ constantly adjusting if I had to be in it for 8 hours
I do this to, I think its just learned bad posture/shrimping. Gotta sorta train yourself to sit properly or long term its bad for you.
@@AshleyBlackwaterI agree but I also think it could be in part due to not having seat forward adjustment. It's a big help for people with long legs

They don't have to meet those requirements, but if they don't, they are just bad and you shouldn't waste your money it.
Awesome summary of office vs gaming chairs. Well done!

So much so i just brought the Titan to the office.
i inherited a big open office chair which I've been gaming in for years, its falling apart but it's so comfy i can't imagine anything else
I’m in a similar situation.
It's also really hard to find chairs _without_ lumbar support, which doesn't work for my spine.
got the logitech embody gaming chair after watching your reviews for it and well , let's just say that i have 0 regrets , love it
How is it if you move around a lot like putting your feet on the chair or desk, or trying to recline a decent bit?

If you read this BTODtv, what are your thoughts?
I have been preaching the content of this video for years now. And throughout those years my words have been met almost exclusively with sighs, eye-rolls, or both at the same time. Anyway... thank you for making this video.
Biggest problem with all of these chairs: they are too expensive! I really wish I could just find a nice, simple chair, that supports more weight that the regular 100kg, that seems to be the norm.
You're over 100kg?

What is the name of the clock with animated weather thingy?
Thanks for this, and sharing your insight!
I got an old an used office chair form my dads work and I'm really happy with it for over four years.
Thanks. This is one of the most helpful videos on RUclips! ❤
(The only thing I didn't like was the Temu ad I had to watch before the video started.)
Thank you man, mind blowing logic!
Back and neck pain for 20 years with office chairs supposedly made to avoid these.
Bought a science whatever gaming chair, no issue whatsoever anymore. Sometimes neck, but that's if I play 6h without any movement or stretching.
Checked and my chair is a SecretLab if anyone wanted to know
You baited me haha.
I was really hoping to see the Destrier review in this video, but I guess I'll have to wait :(.
I'm staying tuned, even more hyped up than before ahah.
Sunday it drops -Greg
Right? Chairs been out for months and it has barely any reviews. Same with Razer Fujin (non pro) my
There haven't been many available to try. Seems like they limited how many were available to the general public. We buy almost all of the things we review so it took a while to track one down. I had to drive 3 hours to get it from the nearest Micro Center, when there was "1" actually available -Greg
-Detrimental to your "sitting experience". A sentence I never imagined would work in a serious context
I am not paying $1,200.00 for a chair.
Can you afford it

The Razer Iskur is incredibly bad. Even whilst writing this comment, the seat keeps sinking down.
What office chair do you recommend then, on a budget (
whats that chair at 0:17
Anyone figure this out?
I think it's a razor chair

Yup. Herman Miller AERON for the past 20 years. Still The Best.
Where I live, office chairs are twice as expensive as gaming chairs so no brainer for me.
Also I spent years sitting on plastic and metal garden and dinner chair, come on.
Same for me. Around here, a pretty good gaming chair with all option goes for half the cost of an equivalent desktop chair.

I sit in a chair for about 8 to 10 hours a day as I game a lot and work a bit. lol
Anyway, that's my opinion.
