A man of few words but probably the best race car builder in the business.
I've always recognised the difference between Larry and other well known drivers to be ego. Larry was always about best for the team over the individual. His results speak for themselves. Humble & determined is no combination to ignore. Well done Larry & Jack.
I could watch Larry work on cars all day
Always been a Ford boy but Legends are legends. Larry Perkins you are a legend.🤜 .thanks Jack
Cheers!!
You're a National Treasure LP. We love ya mate !
Good to Larry still at it and getting it done 👍👍👍
Awesome to see. Been a few years since I pulled down my 1,800 kombi and 1,600 beetle motors for a checkover, and clean. Two vehicles I really wish I'd kept now...
These Perkins Engineering videos are fantastic. I have always been a massive Larry and Jack Perkins fan and these videos are fantastic viewing. Please keep up the great work!
Why thank you! Cheers
would love to see more of the great man working on the vw
_G'Day Larry, l owned 102 VWs since '81, so this brings back old time memories!_
The last of the collection went in or about 2005...a couple went to Japan with a drag-racer who piloted Square back Type 3 under 10 second quarter mile machines!
I have moved on to a new chapter!
Still fond of my years with Porsche/VW beauty!
Next July comes the beginning of CYBRTRK adventures! As a factory car it might be possible to run the BAJA 1000????? :) Not that l will be going OS!
Thanks Larry and Team___INSPIRATIONAL STUFF!!!!
Absolutely loving this footage of LP's VW Jack. Not to mention the Old Boy wearing the Legendry Boiler suit Overalls which I grew up with as a kid entering the workforce wearing back in the day of my trade / Apprentice days.
Great footage guys , keep us all updated on the Beetle Please.
Haha yeah not many these days wear overalls!! Cheers!!
This episode has coolness in spades.
Keep them coming Jack
LP still getting his hands dirty... proper gent of Australian racing..
Larry stripping an engine in the driveway, classic 👍👍
So good seeing LP in his natural habitat in his own time, what a deadset legend 🤙
Just so interesting! Thanks jack for bring us the vids! Good to see LP going strong
I have never been a Holden fan but always respected Larry's professional no nonsense attitude on and off the track .
Larry is such a gentleman and you Jack seem to be a chip off the old block .
Keep up the fantastic content guys just love it a big thumbs up .
Thank you!
Another great one Larry and Jack.
Love this stuff, keep them coming Jack
EVERYBODY loves Larry. Coolest bloke. EVER.
Great Jack. Your Old Man gave ME my life back by sage advice. 1. FIRST he almost wins the Wynn Safari in this Giant Kiling Bug. 2. THEN he tells all and sundry in Australian Street Machines Hot 253s and 308s Two other things. 3. that " 460 hp at 6700 rpm beats 462 hp at 7000 rpm". and 4.. That a lot of heavy duty bolt on are useless if they don't work better than the stock parts. If no one believes what you say Larry...they will believe What You Do! Glad to be able to eat the scraps off your workshop. You both are a credit to the Australian Way and Energy, Initiative and Enterprise!
Love to see Larry still enjoying mucking around in the shed!
Once it’s in your Blood 🩸 you NEVER STOP 💯🏁🇦🇺🇦🇺👍😊
Awesome video. Motor be out in 15 mins normal except she is old stubben girl. Love the old school motors and mechanical stuff. Thanks for sharing brings back memories banging around car with my dad.
How great is this, seeing a legend of Motorsport showing us how it’s really done.
It appears your running type 3 rear drums on that car. I did the same back in the early 80s on my street car. The combination of Gia discs up front and type 3 drums in the rear was a huge improvement over the stock braking system.
How cool is that.Awesome
Thanks for sharing
👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
Sensational to see this car still exists after so many years. Its near outright win in the Safari was the stuff of sporting legends. Looking forward to the next installment Jack.
Good stuff Jack good to see Larry still tinkering. I get disappointed when the videos end. Keep them coming.
Thanks 👍
Bloody marvellous ... LP is so laid back. Can't wait for episode 2. 👌
Love the channel, how nimble is the old fella getting down and dirty, legend 👍
i remember hearing story's about this car about 30 years ago. great to actually see it
Jack and Larry thank you - this is where we learn so much wish I was there - Regards
Much respect for this genius at work, keep it up Larry 👏
Hi Peter! once upon a time I took my sons to the Bathurst 1000 ! My youngest at the age of 7 had trouble focusing...strangely. I made Larry's car his focus for that race. Huw now spends time working on his Nissan 300ZX. No Land Rover in the blood but a lot of grease. Thanks to Larry.
Great to see the Great engineering legend LP working on an engine, look forward episode 2
Awesome. Thanks.
Ex F1 driver grunting away under an old beetle. True style!!
What a legend . Amazing that simple bug threaten the Dakar winning Ralliart team . It proves the KISS theory for outback travel . Old air-cooled Veedubs are the most under rated off road vehicles out there.I've a 1964 kombi that I take to Moreton/Frazer Islands , the look of amazement when cruising past bogged 4WD's is priceless !!
Let me start by saying I’ve always followed Ford and it’s lead drivers. However I’ve always loved LP. His underdog no nonsense attitude and a true gentleman we’re constants throughout his career. Genuinely miss this guy every race weekend. I remember vividly a save he made on the back straight at Sandown during a torrential rain storm in about 2002. He went off on the muddy grass spun and reentered without so much as a how’d do you do. Superb car handler amongst many other skills.
Im jealous how agile Larry is at 71.
bloody great channel jack. love all the content
He should CrowdFund for a workbench.
This reminds me of helping my late grandfather pull apart and prep an old grey motor a few years back. The best of many memories I had with him.
Wow I remember that car! Fantastic Stuff Jack & Larry I loved this!
Love the video's Jack. Good to see LP still being active as ever 👍 reminds me a lot of my old man.
Special...amazing...ta!
Great videos, would you be able to do a segment on Larry's Unimog overdrive unit please.
Anyone else click like before even watching the video 👍 LP you are a Legend
Old skool - love it! Keep it up please, Jack....
Real good watching
Love the V-dub. Plenty more of it please.
Amazing I remember when Larry did technical articles for local VW magazines I learnt so much from him back then. I just learn't some more in the video I could see how Larry sealed the cylinder head tin ware around the crankcase. I'm guessing to keep the cooling air around the cylinders.
I would love to see how Larry builds and blueprints a VW aircooled engine .
I can see why people love them, simplicity which makes them easy to work on.
The Repco Trial was in 1979!
I can remember Larry rolling up to the Adelaide checkpoint, laying the seats back for a sleep. Everyone else of note was picked up and taken to their hotel. I was on that checkpoint for about 12 hours.
4 bolts, fuel line and throttle cable
One day if I've ever got the money I'm going to come to you and hopefully get you to restore a Perkins Engineering car for me to have in my man cave. I love watching what you're up to on this channel!
Love it boys more please
when they stick like that ,get someone to push in the clutch.
Good luck seeing current drivers on the ground with grease on their hands repairing or building their car.
Love the videos but would suggest external mics would make them a lot better!
Been looking forward to seeing this project.
Is that a 30Pict? Thanks Jack I will definitely be watching this resto.
Always watch the content and think it’s great. I was going to get get Larry to sign my Perkins Matchbox car years ago at the Canberra GMC 400 but he wasn’t having a great day. Any chance I could put it in the post and get him to sign it l? keep up the great work always love watching 👍👍
LP you have the agility of a man 1/2 your age .
✌️. Peace
He gets up off the ground faster than I do and I’m 20yrs younger !
That’s a cool site. Father and son tinkering in the shed
Great to see such talented guys mucking around with vintage machines. I think LP has earned the respect of any Australian that knows about cars. Keep it it up guys.
Great content Jack, keep it coming.
Now don't keep us all in the dark LP, when's the first event after the freshen up on that Veedub??
Talk about back to basics. From high tech Supercars to Old volkwagens. Probably a pretty powerful engine though
Jack,
You need to tell us about this thing.
From what I remember, Larry in this car scared the crap out of Mitsubishi who were using the Wynns Safari as preparation for the Paris to Dakar.
Good to see old Larry and Jack, Larry was a very good race car and a brilliant engineer, i,ll bet he would still do very well in a motorsport event such as the Targa rally. The old Bettle would be pretty tough in those off road endurance races, would not be fast, but when the others are trying fix their machines the old Bettle would roll on by.
Good to see Larry and must say he's looking good. I was a bit worried the bug was going to fall of the stands.🧐
Of all the cars.....You can tell,......... he loves that one the best ......How did you cool that thing without tinware ? Did the oil cooler work that well?
Top content Jack. Keep it coming!
I don’t know how you’re still crawling around on concrete Larry. Love the videos but guys. 👍🏼
I was starting to get aches and pains just watching and I'm a good few years younger than him!
Legend
Great vid guys,my brother used to do the engine removal in 20 minutes many years ago...Next project, the Series Landy in the background?
Not too many 70 year old's than can get down under a car like that. LP must be in good nick!
I love Beetles to the max.
That single carb would of been holding back that thing big time
Didn't your hear LP. He wanted torque.
They will make over 100hp@w with a trick pict 34 solex
@@arffadailey8055 yes I heard but restricting it with such a small carb wouldn't make it gain torque ,it will loose it , being stroked to a 2.0litre she needs to breath
Just "Boy's and there toys in a shed.". Oh... and a VW that out lasted the Ford Cortina of Collin Bond.
Would love to see inside the bathurst winning holden V8 of 1993 with screwed in port floors.
I want to see Larry build a replica of the GTR Holden with a 253 he was testing before Holden decided to race the LH.
Hey Jack can you do a segment on how the hell LP is jumping around like a spring chicken at 70 odd!!!
Must be all that Castrol oil he used 🤣
Maybe he didn’t partake of the Marlboro’s either! 😂
LP that jack is as old as the car.
If jack's could tell stories!!!!
Wonder how quick he could have done a tear down on one of his race engines?
He hasnt got a workbench and engine stand?
Nah he's running on the same budget he had in the 1980's on this rocket originally!
Thanks for the update Jack. But how is the rebuild going with the dozer?
if you pull them apart on a dirt floor the nuts dont roll away..lol
Oh Larry what are you doing on the Bug
Hell yeah!
Wasn’t LP doing up a Land Rover to race Daryl Beattie?
One of many ongoing projects!
Be about the ONLY F1 driver who pulled a engine out of a VW/..
God he's a splitter for his old man
I got good at pulling vw engines , id kill one every 10 000 miles when i was young
1st comment, 2nd view great work on the videos Jack. Keep it up
P/E. Any idea what engine oil LP was using back then on the VW Rally Beetle ? Asked Castrol about a 20w40 grade from the 1980's and they said it's only made for tractors like my "Toorak Tractor" ! V.
Once a tinkerer, always a tinkerer.
