For being the first game in its series, I will say that it certainly has a unique tone and atmosphere. What starts as a simple quest to unlock the door to a giant and mysterious tower in a fairly stock medieval fantasy world becomes a strange journey with an overarching sense of existential dread as you confront ever shifting dangers. Am I the only one who gets this feeling from this game? It's strangely terrifying to me, not because of the monsters, but because it feels like a quest your characters really shouldn't be undertaking.
Yeah, i agree with you, and i really liked how you explained it. This game is a really special one. I first got it in 1992 as a gift from a friend, and i played it for Hundreds of hours over the next 4 Years. And yes, the Tower is a really amazing thing. Like you said, it feels like you do Not belong there, and like you are opening Rifts to other dimensions at times... like you are in a Secret place where only the God's should be traversing. Such an amazing game.
Yeah that's how I felt with Might and Magic 6, had the same tones and feeling as this game going from stock fantasy to something else all together. A shame you don't see much fantasy sci-fi these days in video games it's a really fun concept that kind of died off.
This game will Always be one of my favorites, out of any games ever made. The Music alone was amazing and beautiful, especially at that point in time of 1989!
Man, I love this game! Played it through Collection of SaGa, what an awesome release. Also has a speed up function that leaves the music intact, so I definitely recommend this over acquiring an illegal ROM. Support the series! I had two Monsters during my playthrough, and you bet I used a spreadsheet to level them. But even though my Monsters were stronger than they should be early on, they were still my weakest party members throughout the game. I like that they didn't need money to be kept up to standard though.
I did not and will not buy Collection of SaGa because Square Enix censored it. I don't support censorship in any form and don't buy censored or altered versions of games. It's a shame, because I prefer to support publishers when possible. ROMs are not an ideal experience.
I hope for you you don't play the US release and know how to read japanese then, because the US original release is also censored, also did you really go and look what was modified in the US version of the games in the collection ? Honestly not so much that would really qualify as "censore" @@rpg_haven
Is the ROM illegal if you own the real game? I own legit copies of most of these games. The speedup not affecting music is great, but is it on a button or selected through a menu? I put speedup on R2 on emulators, as a toggle, so I can just hold it down when I want things to go faster. I put rewind on L2. So when I fall off a tower accidentally in Dragon Quest or leave the town accidentally while searching the boundaries, I just reverse back in instead of climbing back up or going through the whole town again. I guess that's cheating but it's simply saving time in this case. I don't know if I could play old RPGs without my L2/R2 setup.
Romancing Saga being mentioned in the description text... there's great news of these games having full Fan Translations by now, I don't remember if Romancing Saga 1 has a full translation yet, but 2 and 3 have 🙏
Well considering this game has 3 battle themes, compared to the single battle theme of the first Final Fantasy... I think it's not fair haha! Still this game soundtrack is a masterpiece. And the game itself as much of a classic as the actual Final Fantasy.
Finally did a complete playthrough on the wonderswan version, it has some great moments especially world 3 but I'll be frank, World 4 is really bad. You can tell this is an Akitoshi Kawazu game because it straight up has shit to annoy the fuck out of you, running from suzaku and the TERRIBLE skyscraper tower map with trap rooms straight out of FF2, I'll admit the floor with nothing but stairs in it was funny and clever but the rest of the dungeon put a sour taste in my mouth. Fortunately it's only world 4 that's like that, the rest is pretty solid and not too annoying. I should mention the wonderswan version while having the saw glitch also had stat caps of 99 instead of 255. So humans are kind of mid now compared to monsters who can now see what they turn into and have a billion abilities and mutants who can hit 99 in all stats by world 2 no problem. If it wasn't for world 4 this would have been 9/10 but with world 4 it feels more like a 6/10 (it's that bad). Solid music from Uematsu as always, battle theme doesn't make you go crazy listening to it a billion times and the overworld themes are good.

Love this. It's a great game.
I love that all videos are organized and well spoken
Completing my first play-through and I love this game.
4 mutants is the best party. My first playthrough and it was easy mode the whole way.
Funny story, this game was mentioned in a comedy bit I saw on Comedy Central Presents
That's a deep cut hahah, I'd like to see that

The original version of 1 does not, but there's Minstrel song. Those are the only ones I haven't played yet
would make for excellent streaming content (with commentary) 👍👍
A Comedian's bit on this game was my introduction to the trope of JRPGs where you kill God at the end.
That's a great bit

Just saying the music volume was too high compared to your voice. Felt like double!
Thanks for the feedback, you're right
@@rpg_haven Nice video.

Garbage game. Waste of time
