I mean, they basically did just do that for a lot of games back then. Golf, Tennis, Famicom Grand Prix, Alleyway, Qix - Mario Kart wasn't originally a Mario game, and 'Super Donkey' eventually became Yoshi's Island. They should probably bring that mentality back. I bet Labo would have been a lot more successful if it was Mario themed, or at least had Mario elements in it.
