I think the reason behind the decision to make Mario and Luigi either grocery store owners or employees of one is that, in Japan, the most commonly used term for 'grocery store' is 'スーパー', which is short for 'スーパーマーケット' ('super': short for the English term 'supermarket'); since the title of the game is obviously 'Super Mario Bros.' or 'スーパーマリオブラザーズ', that would make this a pun, with the additional implication that 'Super' in this case is both an adjective *and* a noun.

For those wondering, yes the SMB1 manual talks about the Mushroom People getting transformed into "blocks," and _yes_ it's canon.
They were specifically transformed into bricks, stones, and horsehair plants. The entire reason Bowser (Koopa) kidnapped Peach in the first place is because she is the only one who can undo his curse. Within the games themselves, Bowser didn't really show any affection for Peach until about Mario RPG. Before then he seemed to capture her just so he could rule the kingdom.
Later in the SMB1 manual, it says that the mushroom people give Mario items when Mario hits them. This indicates that they're specifically brick blocks that have items in them, which cannot be destroyed. We can deduct that all the other brick blocks and ?-Blocks were already there. So no, you are not killing Toads by hitting brick blocks, and you're not even releasing their souls or anything. Peach would've undone the curse at the end of the game, and the Mushroom People would've been turned back to normal.
There's a common misconception that the SMB1 manual is no longer canon, since there are brick blocks all over the universe. But the manual doesn't really contradict anything. There were already brick blocks, stones, and horsehair plants. Bowser just turned them into more.
After Lost Levels, he never tried that scheme again, instead just letting the Mushroom People be. We still see instances of Bowser using magic in the present day, though. He can teleport in Super Mario 64, he flies in 3D Land, calls down meteors in Galaxy 2. In Odyssey he creates shields, clones his hat, summons boulders made of castles... Bowser still has magic, he's just more prone to punch or flame his enemies instead. Kamek is the true magic expert, so he tends to get more time in the spotlight nowadays.

    • @alfiehicks1
      @alfiehicks1 Год назад +54

Bowser was raised by Kamek, too, so it's understandable that he'd have been taught to use some amount of magic. And it's clearly not genetic, either, since Bowser Jr doesn't have any innate magical abilities, and instead has to rely on the "magic" paintbrush (which is actually the _scientific_ paintbrush since it was made by Professor E. Gadd) or other sources of magic, such as Wonder Power or that cauldron at the end of New Super Mario Bros.
Equally, the Koopalings need to use wands to use magic, further supporting the fact that magic isn't inherent to the koopa species, but something that they can learn to use, or can use via magical artefacts such as wands. Or perhaps they _are_ inherently magical, but can only use it freely upon reaching adulthood, and as juveniles they need to have something to channel it.

26:38: For those of you who don't know, there's a famous Japanese comedy folk tale where a family with a newborn baby boy goes to a priest to get suggestions for a name for the baby. However, the parents like all the names they're given too much to pick just ONE of them, so they indeed give the baby *all* of those names, his full name of which starts with Jugem/Jugemu. The boy has problems with the name while growing up, and in various versions of the story, the child is in danger, and the comedy comes from news about the boy, or rescuing or helping him, being passed from person to person, where *each* person has to recite the name in-full.
Some of you may have seen the joke done in Full Metal Alchemist's undubbed version, as Scar's "real" name.
It's like using "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" as magic words.
If you want an analogue in the Western hemisphere, there's a Monty Python skit that did something similar about a forgotten German baroque music composer named "Johann Gambolputty...--"

    • @VinchVolt
      @VinchVolt Год назад +87

Also worth noting is that Spinies reference the folk tale as well; their egg forms are known in Japan as "Paipo," which is also part of Jugemu's full name. For those curious, the full name is as follows:
      Jugemu Jugemu Gokō-no Surikire Kaijarisuigyo-no Suigyōmatsu Unraimatsu Fūraimatsu Kuunerutokoro-ni Sumutokoro Yaburakōji-no Burakōji Paipopaipo Paipo-no Shūringan Shūringan-no Gūrindai Gūrindai-no Ponpokopii-no Ponpokonā-no Chōkyūmei-no Chōsuke.
And you thought "Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso" was a mouthful.

The opening theme song's lyrics sound a little stilted in English because a lot of that was onomatopoeia or similar stuff, which are used a LOT in Japanese. Imagine trying to give a coherent translation of something like the English song Splish Splash that has lines like "bing bang, I saw the whole gang" and "flip flop, they was doing the bop". In the case of this song, "bishi bishi-bashi" is like the sound of slapping, and "chakichaki" is literally the sound of like a tambourine or cymbol being struck/jangling, so it's a bit hard to give the right vibe and whatnot without just going "slappity slap" in English or whatever.

    • @VinchVolt

I'm reminded of how Clyde Mandelin, the guy who directed the Mother 3 fan translation, wrote multiple times about how wordplay is one of few things about any language that are impossible to translate because they revolve around things that are specific to that particular language. Usually it gets translated literally (e.g. this), gets replaced with a different style of wordplay (e.g. the gag in EarthBound about someone checking into a hospital for a haircut -- instead of being a joke about Japanese homophones, it's a joke about a bad hair day), or gets completely rewritten (e.g. the "happy urepi yoropiku ne~" joke in the JoJo dub, which becomes a gag about treating someone as a supermodel to mess with them).

It's a very by-the-numbers movie, if only because of how little there was to go off of at the time, but it's still a fun novelty nonetheless, and its influence on later games is particularly interesting to see. While this restoration is incredibly impressive, especially for something made by fans, I highly recommend Kineko Video's restoration of the film as well if you liked how this one looked. (EDIT: I thought this was the Kineko version because Twitch/YT compression made it hard to tell, turns out it's a different restoration).

It was just Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Mario Bros. and *Super* Mario Bros.; someone thought Mario wouldn’t have grown into having the Mushroom Kingdom as a major part of the series, but that’s proven wrong with Super Mario Bros. 3; and the Mario games have continued from that moment on. Prince Hal is nothing more than an afterthought from pure speculation that the Mario games wouldn’t continue in this direction. If the Mario Anime was more accurate to the games going forward, the cuck-ending wouldn’t exist. 26:35 some context/trivia with assistance from wikipedia: In Japanese Lakitu is named Jugemu, and the spiked enemies he throws are called Paipo. This is a reference to Jugemu, a famous story in Rakugo which is a form of Japanese verbal entertainment in which a lone storyteller, the rakugoka acts out a story (usually comedic in nature, although not necessarily or entirely) in which they play the role of multiple characters.
In the story of Jugemu, a couple is having trouble naming their newborn and the father goes to a shrine to ask a priest for an auspicious name to give to his son, with the priest suggesting Jugemu, among others. The father ends up being unable to decide on one name and picks all of them, with Jugemu's full name being
    Jugemu Jugemu (寿限無 寿限無)
    Gokō-no Surikire (五劫の擦り切れ)
    Kaijarisuigyo-no (海砂利水魚の)
Suigyōmatsu Unraimatsu Fūraimatsu (水行末 雲来末 風来末)
    Kuunerutokoro-ni Sumutokoro (食う寝る処に住む処)
    Yaburakōji-no Burakōji (やぶら柑子のぶら柑子)
    Paipopaipo Paipo-no Shūringan (パイポパイポ パイポのシューリンガン)
    Shūringan-no Gūrindai (シューリンガンのグーリンダイ)
    Gūrindai-no Ponpokopii-no Ponpokonā-no (グーリンダイのポンポコピーのポンポコナーの)
    Chōkyūmei-no Chōsuke (長久命の長助)
The comedic element of the story often hinges on the performer's delivery. With Jugemu being a bit of a troublemaker, anytime a character in the story calls out to Jugemu they do so reciting his full name. In some versions of the story things also take a darker turn with events culminating in Jugemu falling into a well, river or lake, either drowning or having his parents come to the rescue just in time, with everyone passing along the news having to recite Jugemu's full name.
Why exactly did Nintendo name some dude flying on a cloud throwing spiked monsters at Mario Jugemu? idk for sure, but to speculate, Jugemu (寿限無) means "limitless life". Lakitu usually flies high enough that defeating one isn't always the easiest and even when you do, they'll reappear after a while, so if I had to guess that's probably where they got the name.

Vinny, this is your first time seeing this, but the community for this movie has been passionate and involved in fan works for years, even managing to get the original master reel, remaster and recolor it into 4K, and go through several translation revisions. (I helped that at one point actually as some references were originally lost in translation.)
It's only recently that some fan groups finally put together this finalized, fully remastered version, released in its entirety on RUclips, for everyone to enjoy.
I'm glad you got to experience it in its best quality now though!
12:00 For example, a pun lost in translation here is that Mario says a pun when mistakening Bowser's name, "I don't know who this Koopa, Bibimba, or whatever guy is...", as in, Koopa is the Japanese pronunciation of the Korean dish Gukbap. One of Koopa's original names was also considered to be Bibimba, another Korean dish. It was likely a coincidence, but Nintendo didn't actually mention that fact until a few years later apparently.

A couple things to point out. There was some music toward the beginning that was never in SMB, though heard decades later in Mario Maker and Mario Maker 2. The Koopa priest is voiced by Joji Yanami who played the skinny mechanic henchman in Tatsunoko's Time Bokan series (ie: Boyacky in "Yatterman.")
