  • In this video, we go over buying and decoding the perfect 10 bolt rear end for the 1986 IROC-Z Camaro!
    The new rear end is out of a 1991 Z28, and has GU5/G92, and G80 RPO Codes, as well as the preferred PBR (J65) rear disc brakes. It's a PERFECT setup, and I was lucky to find it.
    Stay tuned for more! The next videos we will again be working on the cars!

    This was one of the best things I did for my 83 Camaro. I switched from 3:08 to a 3:42 1997 TA 10 bolt with limited slip and disc brakes. Also went with 1989 Corvette "salad shooter" aluminum 17" wheels, fills the wheel wells and steps up to 17" wheels, and fits perfect. Massive improvement in driving / stopping.

    My 1990 IROC has G80, G92, and J65 RPO CODES.
    This makes the car super rare as the limited slip, with the performance gear ratio and 4 wheel disc breaks was a 1LE standard, but rarely ordered on non 1LE cars

    I had a 97 Frankenmaro. It was probably five Camaros parted out to make one. No wait, it was four Camaro parts cars and a WS6 Trans Am. I put the Trans Am WS6 factory 3.73 geared rear end on a V6 Camaro. The exhaust you got will work wonderfully for your car! I wouldn’t worry about the booger welds too much nobody will really see them and you can get a sleeve made to put the two pieces back together using a muffler clamp or weld it back together. It will be better than what you have and sound awesome! Not that you need me to tell you that. You have a great build and I’m glad to see I wasnt the only one who swapped the rear end for posi-traction and rear disk brakes!

    That is a great upgrade for the IROC, those gears will really wake it up and you get the good brakes with everything going together like factory. I just painted my rear axle with POR 15 two weeks back, was not bad at all even on the car. If you do POR 15 just remember that stuff needs something to bite into and doesn't like smooth surfaces but they say the metal prep helps with that, I did the 3 step process and it looks good. I am also looking forward to the headers install.

    • @Greenlightfilming
      @Greenlightfilming  3 года назад

      Interesting, I didnt know that about por15. I'll keep that in mind if I go that way. Thinking I'll end up bead blasting the housing first, so maybe something like an enamel paint would be better in my case?

    • @reddragon6613
      @reddragon6613 3 года назад

      @@Greenlightfilming In the instructions rusted metal is best but sand blasted is considered good as well. I noticed on my axle that the few smooth/not rusted areas needed more paint and you could feel it not biting as well as on rust. Also the POR15 starter kit for like $25 will have almost enough for the whole job, I had a leftover 14oz can that I used a little from to finish the second coat which also goes much farther than first coat IMO. That metal prep spray would be key on non rusty surfaces. Maybe check out Eastwood chassis paint as well?

    You are correct, 10 bolt can really be a weak link when you start adding HP. But I think it will be more then able to handle that car unless you really start doing some big mods like more cubes and or FI. I ditched the 10 bolt in my 97 Comp T/A ages ago for a Moser 12 Bolt with 4:10 Gears, 33 spline axles with a c-clip eliminator kit. Rear end had a full spool for a while but it lost its novelty and I got tired of people telling me there was something wrong with my car during slow speed turns. Even had a "Mechanic" at an exhaust shop who installed my WB 02 Bung because my welder was down try telling me. "Something is wrong, it feels like your rear end is binding up. When I pulled your car out. You might want to have that looked at." He looked at me with a blank expression when I told him it has a full spool. Then repeated what he just told me like he thought I didn't know what I was talking about. At any rate because I'm more into canyon carving and road course racing (Work for a Pro IMSA Race Team) I ditched the full spool in favor of a Moser Detroit Trutrack and have never looked back. That thing is a Monster of a LSD

  • @kennydemartini2169
    @kennydemartini2169 3 года назад +1

    I personally pull the cover off of every rearend I do, count the teeth, and do the math. That way you know exactly what you have. I have rebuilt hundreds of rearends, and changed the gear ratio in probably 40% of those, so the code on the tube would be worthless. 1989 was the change over year. My son's has 26 spline, and my cousins has 28 spline axels. I put 3.42's in both of them. My son already grenaded his 700r4, so I'm waiting on him to blow that 7.5 10 bolt all to hell, then we'll put a 9 inch in it. Keep that exhaust you bought. New aftermarket 3rd gen exhaust is getting scarce.

    • @Greenlightfilming
      @Greenlightfilming  3 года назад

      Maybe you'll know this then. That number I referenced on the ring gear. Those are the number of teeth on the ring and pinion right? That's the same numbers you would get manually counting them?

    • @kennydemartini2169
      @kennydemartini2169 3 года назад

      @@Greenlightfilming Yes. Most GM ring gears on the automotive rearends have anywhere from 39 to 41 teeth on them. A 41 tooth ring gear and 10 tooth pinion would be 4.10 gears. Ring and pinions must be kept as a set. Never mix and match. They're 'lapped in' at the manufacturer.

I later upgraded the brakes with an LS1 disk setup and changed the spring inside the proportioning valve with a heavier spring so the rear brakes engage sooner. Couldn't be happier with the setup especially with C5 big brakes in he front. The calipers for the front are from a 2006 GTO which are essentially C6 calipers minus the raised Corvette logo. Upgraded the lines to Kore3 braided steel all around. The difference from stock is night and day. The 10.5" stock front brakes with rear drums are a joke IMHO. Should never have been equipped with the from the factory PERIOD.

    Its anecdotal, but I went from a 3.23 to a 3.42 in my 00 z28 and couldn't tell a difference beside my tach being slightly higher. Especially because it's a manual car I'd put at least a 3.73 in it minimum if not a 4.11. • @maldo72
    @maldo72 3 года назад

    I think $500 was a steep price for a stock 10 bolt even if it had the brakes (9 time out of 10 if it came with brakes and its been sitting for a while the calipers are frozen which just adds to the cost )
    a better route could be a 4th gen rear.. there super cheap maybe $250 or less for a complete rear and easier to find (93-97 they use the same brake set up and pop out the ring and pinion gear for the limited slip unit and swap over your gear set a little more work but cheaper ).
    That said:
    Over the years everyone wants the 3.42 rears but , the 3.23 rears from the auto cars are a better deal one because the autos don't send a ton of shock wave through the rear ... also the 3.23 rears are stronger due to the thicker ring gear. also you have to beware of the different limit slip units used over the years some are the clutch style and some or the strange setup with the weights i forget whats its called but those units are junk

    • @Greenlightfilming
      @Greenlightfilming  3 года назад +1

      I did feel that the price was on the high end given its overall condition, I agree with you there. That being said, it's a perfect platform to clean up and swap into the car.
      I had considered a 4th gen rear, but hate how a third gen looks with a 4th gen rear in it. Wheels poke and I dont like it at all. They are way more affordable and much easier to find. The are no stronger than this one as they are pretty much the same with 28 spline axles and having and Auburn LSD. I believe its shared in 1993-1997 cars too. If I can find a good 98-02 Zexel Torsen I will use it because it's should fit my axles and carrier being it's a 3.23 ratio.
      I think the oddball you are referring to is called a "Gov Lock" or "Government Lock"? Think those are on earlier cars and more prone to breaking. This rear has an auburn diff.
      As far as the brakes go, the previous owner drove it. I have photos of the rotors being pretty clean before he parked and pulled it. Might get lucky there. Might need replacements, idk haha. Hoping for the best there.

    What mods would you recommend for a 1989 IROC-Z 5.7L

    • @Greenlightfilming
      @Greenlightfilming  2 года назад

      Being it's an automatic car, I would recommend headers and a higher stall torque converter. If you are street driving the car 99% of the time I'd probably just stick to headers. It take a LOT to wake up the TPI cars unfortunately. It all depends on your budget and goals at that point.

      @@Greenlightfilming Any 3rd gen header will work. The exhaust bolt spacing and height never changed on the small block. An extra hole was added during the smog years, but is irrelevant. I put Hooker headers on my son's, and used a Doug's headers Y-pipe. The headers have a 3 inch flange, but the Y-pipe is 2 1/2 at exit. Everything bolted right up and aligned right up with his 3 inch intermediate pipe. I had a piece made to connect them together.
