Have same car now - 'cept Met. red Conv. But back then only way I could beat 5.0's was I ordered 1991 1LE G-92 Z/28. Camaro's were heavier, but handled, the 1LE was much quicker. Funny it cost less than showroom Z/28, got it for $16,900.

I had a beautiful white 1992 Firebird Formula with the slow as a boat TBI 305. It had the same Fastech chip and thermostat. It had 3 inch exhaust which actually sounded pretty good. The BEST upgrade that made the biggest difference were the fresh Goodyear GTA tires. They hooked up immediately and never let go. I swapped to Goodyear RSA's and I swear I lost a full second with those on. Still was an awesome car though. Was actually very nice and reliable as a hammer.
Further away from the engine which in turn means "colder" air which means more power. Granted the gains aren't massive but it can still help. They also make covers to put over filters that repel water from going into the intake
@@asherdeangelo3268 Dude, it's not meant to be a performance monster. The whole point is fuel economy and have a little bump in performance. It's meant to be a fun daily and you got your race car at home. The next episode is more extensive anyway...
@@AutoYoung I had an 91..however I'm not talking about a race car...but reliability..in 92 gm was way behind in technology..including Performance.. if your going to drive it
The Accell coil and plugs do help performance and MPG. If you can dial in your carb its gets even better. . have a 74 351 and get more than 20 on the highway
Did they do anymore engine upgrades to this? I'd like to see more power out that 305 and still retain the 20ish mpgs. I think with today's engine tech that should be pretty easy.
Those engines really like between 1 and 4 degrees over base timing for best performance. ACCEL Ignition Control Module 35370 should be used for these applications, avoid ACCEL 35362. They are both listed as compatible but 35370 is based on GM's performance module and 35362 is based on GM's economy module. These modules have different latencys that are taken into account by the ECM. Use of the economy module will result in VERY poor performance in these vehicles. Additionally, if you are upgrading the ignition system without gapping the plugs wider you are wasting your time. The best mod for the money on those throttle bodys is to double up the gasket under the injectors - raising them above the bores and allowing more CFM's to enter the engine. Swapping to the 350 injectors is also a worthwhile mod. Some have modified the intake to work with the 454 throttle body as well. There are still short tube headers available for third gens. I like the 2460HKR by Hooker, but there are plenty of options. I would recommend replacing the factory manifolds and exhausts as soon as possible as it made the most noticeable difference on my 305 TBI Firebird. Just remember that if you are pushing for 350 power you need an exhaust to accommodate that. The factory rocker arms have a tolerance of +.1 to -.1. Replacing them with literally any reputable aftermarket will improve performance, even if they are also stamped rockers. The H.O. 305 heads should be considered for any third gen owner trying to get the most out of their 305 as they flow much better, even without porting and valve work. Look for castings ending in 416 or 601 at the scrap yard. They can often be found on mid 80's trucks with 305s. The H.O. 305 also featured the 929 cam that was originally released in the 350HP 327 Chevelle if you like the retro sound and good low end to mid-range power. If you are looking at aftermarket cams don't go over .48 lift unless you have made major alterations or the valve will contact the cylinder wall.
@@ちくてぬしくけて on a curvy enough road my 91 TBI 305 powered Formula could keep pace with a friends 800hp 06 Mustang GT. Just got done locating a 92 while trying to find an old 97 30th *without* the gaudy racing stripes as well as those nasty seats! Honestly, the engine compartment gives you a lot of room to put nearly everything from a 454 to a Cummins! Wish I could say that about one of the new vehicles, not every Jeep gives you much room anymore.😡 I loved my 97 Z28, I still kick myself for trading it in back in 2000!
I have a purple 1992 Z-28. Purchased it new from Clark Chevrolet in Mckeesport. Now today i removed the 350 tpi and i installed an all aluminum 427 big block with a Halltech injection and a 4L80E trans. Modified the trans tunnel, installed subframe connectors, and installed a rear differential from Curry. My car has many mods Griffin rad and oil coolers. Im basically stuck with this car! Lololol but it is a blast to drive!!!
I don’t doubt the fuel economy at all. I had a 5.0 Foxbody, bone stock. 5speed. Took it on a small road trip with some city driving. Got 23mpg. I know I could’ve gotten better. Never had the chance to play with it. Had to sell it because I started a family. 20 years later we’ve got a 3rd Gen Firebird, same green as this Camaro, 305. Can’t wait to get it on the road. It’s an auto though 🤔
Two mpg with a 16 gallon tank would yield 32 miles per tank. That would be about a gallon and a half of gas extra per tank. That would be about $3.50 per tankful. So, to make your money back on $600, you will have to buy 171 tankfuls.
Yeah, lower coolant temps equal lower mpgs too. Get it back up to 200* running down the road, 235* is normal fan on temp. I'd like to see a test where they have 2 of these camaros, one with a 400 2bbl hwy gears and the other with a 305 4bbl and see if it can match the other in performance & mpgs.
Did you remove and drain the torque converter? Problem with air intake in my area would be you sucking in water when it rains here. Gets a bit deep at times.
This car looks awesome, is prob super fun and reliable to drive, is easy & cheap to fix and maintain, and is now worth at least twice what they paid. In the mean time everyone’s bitching about how it doesn’t have a thousand horsepower.
My LG4 has over 360K and I stopped driving it over 10 years ago. (a mistake) It was getting 27 - 29 mpg on the highway. That's using the electronic quadrajet carb. It's was a refreshing change from the 2nd gen. and still one of the best designed cars made.
I loved this generation for looks. The convertible was the nicest, top up or down. Imhop. Just no power. I had a z28 with a 305. Top speed was 140mph 1/4 mile 16sec. They handled the speed decent.
1:17 is MAX PSI and not the PSI that is for that car specifically. The specific PSI should be on the door jamb and is much lower (30 PSI for stock Camaro RS I believe).
I have a 91 caprice with a 305 tbi, and all i did was long tube headers, x-pipe. A ram air intake and replaced the plugs and wires, and it dynoed at 195hp. And i spent way less than what these guys did.
The pressure rating on the tire is just the maximum pressure the tire can take. The proper pressure for the vehicle is usually printed on the driver door jam.
I challenge these guys to make 2 episodes dedicated to help fix and correct the smog era muscle, to un-choke the motors of the camaro TPI ( tuneport injection) and CFI ( crossfireinjection ) cars to show their potential on what those cars could have been if they weren't choked they have to use the CFI set up same the the TPI and do 2 episodes for the corvette CFI and TPI. Haha wow this brings me back, I had this same exact camaro when I was 18, 1992 305 TBI, 5 speed, same color, t-tops, same 25th anniversary rims, back then it was "fast" compared to other vehicles I would race, then I bought a 93 5.0, I actually ended up locking my brakes up on a hairpin turn the front left caliper locked up and I ended up 50ft down a embankment it ruined the car and I used the insurance $ to get my foxbody, that was about 16yrs ago that brings back some memories
😱😱ruclips.net/video/mcZzYkCwD2Q/видео.html
Have same car now - 'cept Met. red Conv. But back then only way I could beat 5.0's was I ordered 1991 1LE G-92 Z/28. Camaro's were heavier, but handled, the 1LE was much quicker. Funny it cost less than showroom Z/28, got it for $16,900.
Omg my mullet is growing by the second. Call me a red neck but I absolutely love a 92 RS. And that color? I had a 93 grand prix special edition that same green but with gold trim....btw somewhat of a rare green, beautiful!
I'm not up to par on TBI motors but that cold air kit was pretty slick. I like how you get a refund for the parts you don't use.
That's a beautiful car, love the dark green metallic color.
I like the mpg on my old foxbody carbureted it could get 30 or better mpg highway when it’s cooler at night. But when you floored it with that edelbrock 750 carb you could watch the gauge move lol
I like the 3rd gen hood prop rod... doubles for the back hatch also.haha
Did Joe Elmore seriously just say that Chevy's TBI wasn't bad for the time? Jesus, Mary and Joseph Stalin!
They also don't know the difference between recommended and max tire pressure so...
@@Onewheelordeal more pressure = better mpg

With the air filter right behind the front wheel,
What`s keeping it from sucking up water in the rain ?
Why is your set up better than stock ?
Further away from the engine which in turn means "colder" air which means more power. Granted the gains aren't massive but it can still help. They also make covers to put over filters that repel water from going into the intake
@@brettgillmore5825 it already had a cold air intake scoop.
Godspeed Joe.
I'm getting a 92 rs with a 305,5 speed t tops here in the next day or so
Enjoy man. Just don't do what these guys did lol
Whats mods are you doing im geting one aswell
Cool car
@2:05 - "Risk a Reckless Driving ticket" If only such a thing existed in California...
It would have been cheaper and faster to LS swap it , plus you get to keep your sub.
Hahahaha
Ya know these episodes are like 15 years old now an LS swap when the ls was that new wasn't as cheap as it is now
@@cameronvandygriff7048 well even an lt1 was cheap in the late 90s..that still would have been better..

Dude, it's not meant to be a performance monster.
That cold air intake is great. As long as you are never going to drive in heavy rain lol
Not so great for fuel economy either
I’m a simple man. I see 3rd gen Camaro, I click
I told my mom when i was a kid I wanted a iroc , I still want one sooo bad
89 IROC-Z: Stroked the original 350 to 383. Got the TPI motor down to a 12.81, 25.2 mpg and passed my local smog test.
Is that a factory third generation color? It is really nice ... makes the car pop.
Yes, I believe it was called Polo Green. I was always partial to the teal one.
saw this and I'm a broke college kid rebuilding a 92 camaro so this was well placed thanks youtube and powernation
6:52 - Look, it's a factory Sniper setup!
I like it! I have an 82 Z28 with only 45,000 on the clock.
These are classics.I wonder how old Joe is doing now days?
Did they do anymore engine upgrades to this? I'd like to see more power out that 305 and still retain the 20ish mpgs. I think with today's engine tech that should be pretty easy.
That was my first car but it was white in color with a red stripe. I loved that car. Thinking about getting another
Be a lot cooler if they added laugh tracks to these old episodes
Good info thank you
Great info! If i would have known, i would have kept my LO3. Heck, 300hp is more than enough to have fun in these cars!
@@ちくてぬしくけて on a curvy enough road my 91 TBI 305 powered Formula could keep pace with a friends 800hp 06 Mustang GT. He would spend several K on some upgrade and I would respond by doubling up a gasket or grabbing a set of heads at the scrap yard - can't keep up with his new 1300hp Shelby for shit though 😂😅
I had an 89 IROC with the 5.7 for some reason the intake manifold gaskets always failed. The power & handling seemed good back in the day, but I HATED the front seat & the horn. I sold it a few years later & never missed it. Never felt like buying another camaro...
Just got done locating a 92 while trying to find an old 97 30th *without* the gaudy racing stripes as well as those nasty seats! Honestly, the engine compartment gives you a lot of room to put nearly everything from a 454 to a Cummins! Wish I could say that about one of the new vehicles, not every Jeep gives you much room anymore.😡
I loved my 97 Z28, I still kick myself for trading it in back in 2000!
Best part of this episode was Joe's mother-in-law joke.
Is this some kind of joke? For gods sakes find a 350TPI and start there.
Even a TPI 305 would suffice.
@Micheal Hunt but the 350ci crate engine cost significantly more so its Not really an ideal budget engine for this vehicle.
I had the same car, exterior color interior color same wheels. Beautiful. I miss it,
I would like test With headers, 2-1/2 exhaust and catback...
I was really expecting “phase one is swapping in an LS3 E-Rod crate engine!”
I wish more people used cruise control that would solve a lot road rage
I don’t doubt the fuel economy at all. I had a 5.0 Foxbody, bone stock. 5speed. Took it on a small road trip with some city driving. Got 23mpg. I know I could’ve gotten better. Never had the chance to play with it. Had to sell it because I started a family. 20 years later we’ve got a 3rd Gen Firebird, same green as this Camaro, 305. Can’t wait to get it on the road. It’s an auto though 🤔
make this easy.. install a 2.0 ecotec turbo, and a oem 6 speed transmission= fast and great fuel milage
I'm putting in a 383 600 horsepower in my 84 Z28 this thing is a beast I spent ten thousand even a new rear end
Two mpg with a 16 gallon tank would yield 32 miles per tank. That would be about a gallon and a half of gas extra per tank. That would be about $3.50 per tankful. So, to make your money back on $600, you will have to buy 171 tankfuls.
I wonder temp drop and how much improvement comes from the PROM chip/thermostat/fsn relay combo.
Warm air equals better mpg, old air equals better HP. Its one of the other not both
Yeah, lower coolant temps equal lower mpgs too. Get it back up to 200* running down the road, 235* is normal fan on temp. I'd like to see a test where they have 2 of these camaros, one with a 400 2bbl hwy gears and the other with a 305 4bbl and see if it can match the other in performance & mpgs.
😱😱ruclips.net/video/mcZzYkCwD2Q/видео.html
You should do the aluminium bbk underdrive pulleys like I did
12 rwhp gain and it made my mpg go up to
If you use the max pressure embossed on tires you have way over filled the tires. Pressure and sizes are printed on a label on the door jam.
But you will get better MPG at 44psi than 35 I bet
I’m glad they made this video becouse I had more than 5 of this car
that 3rd gen is mint
Did you remove and drain the torque converter? Problem with air intake in my area would be you sucking in water when it rains here. Gets a bit deep at times.
That’s a nice looking car.
Love Mike !
Anything over 12 miles per gallon , that makes me smile is good !
Love that Green
This car looks awesome, is prob super fun and reliable to drive, is easy & cheap to fix and maintain, and is now worth at least twice what they paid. In the mean time everyone’s bitching about how it doesn’t have a thousand horsepower.
TBI 305 L03 engine’s although not powerful were dependable and would run 250k easy or better 👍
My LG4 has over 360K and I stopped driving it over 10 years ago. (a mistake) It was getting 27 - 29 mpg on the highway. That's using the electronic quadrajet carb. It's was a refreshing change from the 2nd gen. and still one of the best designed cars made.
Yes, they were dependable truck engines.
Fantastic! 🏆🏆🏆
I loved this generation for looks. The convertible was the nicest, top up or down. Imhop. Just no power. I had a z28 with a 305. Top speed was 140mph 1/4 mile 16sec.
They handled the speed decent.
actually the convert was the homeliest, hardtop was the nicest tbh
Whether or not it runs hot, that front end is not a poor design. That's a beautiful car.
Is that a Matco 2x4 holding the hood open?
700 dollars standard ,800 for the shellac model.
These 3rd gens are getting hard too find and high on prices used. I remember seeing so many at pick n pull...
Yep. Haven't seen a V8 Thirdgen at my local yard in 2 years.
Same here. I always have to order from hawks to buy stuff... so damn expensive!
exactly what did the 'chip' do for cooling ? Turn the fans on earlier, richen the fuel ?
Did they buy this from Jeremy clarkson
I challenge these guys to make 2 episodes dedicated to help fix and correct the smog era muscle, to un-choke the motors of the camaro TPI ( tuneport injection) and CFI ( crossfireinjection ) cars to show their potential on what those cars could have been if they weren't choked they have to use the CFI set up same the the TPI and do 2 episodes for the corvette CFI and TPI. I hear CFI cars would be very good with flat top pistons better cam and heads as well as exhaust same with the TPI
