- Bought this eBay kit for swapping out your drum brakes for a nice disc setup. Works on 10 and 12 bolt GM axles. Doesn’t work with axles that have staggered shocks though.
piratejack.net/ - Авто/Мото
I have installed these before. Spent way more time getting the e-brake to function correctly than the rest of the mods took. Also confirmed the brake attachment flange was in axial alignment with the axle. This keeps your pads from wearing more on one side.
Thanks for your help and have a great time with your set up
I’ve been wanting to do this to my 92 Chevy C1500....from one Canadian to another...awesome job!
Ever go through ?with it same year as mine. Rear driver has a small drip(recently started) and idk if anyone has ever changed them
Got a f250 7.3 97 and have had nothing but problems out of the drum. Never done a conversation to disc so trying to pick up as much as I can to prepare for the kit this was one of the more helpful videos thanks man.
Because you are a moron.
It will be a lot more expensive and I would not recommend disc brakes on the rear if you spend a lot of time in the dirt and mud. You will be replacing the pads way more often as the abrasive materials in the dirt will grind them away.
Subscribed fellow Canuck 👍 Awesome channel. Fun stuff to watch. I too am a car fanatic. I had a '68 Mercury M-100 with a 300 ci inline-6. And about 40 others. LoL. No project ever completed. Maybe one day 😉
Several years ago,one of the popular magazines had a article which stated that drum brakes were as good as disc. The problem was that the drums were sealed and heat was the problem. By drilling vent holes in face of drum between studs drums they were nearly as good as disc, and a lot cheaper. Nothing against throwing money at cars. But anyone with deep pockets can go fast or stop fast . Hot rodding is going fast cheaply.
Agreed 👍
If you slam on the brakes. Unless something is not adjusted. They do jam.
As teenagers we experiment 😉.
What does not work. Is front drum brakes with a little water. Rain. Or snow being the worst..Just do not get in the way. No matter how much you pressure your brake pedal. You will not STOP.
Really Appreciate the info speedyCanuck, Got a 64-Chevelle that I have done the 2012 Camaro Brembo brake Swap on, and it's been a nightmare, to say the least, ended up having to go with hydro-boost, and now several rims won't fit because of that big ass caliper. So thanks Ill be ordering tonight.
Pirate Jacks is awesome, they can get u set up for brakes on damn near anything. I did 4 wheel disc on my 63 impala for surprisingly little $ and, they work great. Their not just an eBay store either so getting through to their tech people is super easy
Did you hv to chg your master cylinder and proportion valve
@@boss94ways51 if your going 4 wheel disc you have to change em
@@louisward3654thank you sir you just save me time and money I have a 65 caprice and biscayne also 66 Pontiac Catalina still young so I’m running around like a chicken with his head missing 😵💫😭😭😭🤣
I kept my stock axles and used a c clip eliminator kit. Cheaper than axles, and took the worry away when launching in slicks under boost at the track.
Pirate Jack sounds like a name you can really trust
Said nobody EVER
Actually, by installing disc brakes, you have greatly reduced the risk of "the axle & wheel leaving" if a c-clip failure occurred. The disc, caliper, and bracket will hold everything together.
Im looking to get a full float rear for my 2007 bowtie classic
good point!

I'm looking to do the same to my 85 Camaro. This video just gave me motivation to do it myself. Thanks for your help.
Just get a rear end of a 85 iroq with disc brakes. Make sure you get the brake lines too. I did it with my 82 berlinetta.
@@ozkar11100 what about the master cylinder and valve?
@@yeudsiegal5285 if you want to be safe you can swap those too!
get any rear end off a 4th gen F-Body better caliper then those old steel style! get PBR or keep drum brake!
Good work 👍🏻
These are memories for me as I did the almost exact same thing to my 1978 Z28 using Eldorado calipers and brackets with Trans Am rotors in the late '80's. Did the kit come with a master cylinder and proportioning valve? The MC is necessary as the volume of fluid to the rear brakes is much increased and I remember I had to swap it out. The PV was also different. The parking brake was a bitch to get working right and also had to replace the cables.
That car is long gone now. I miss it :-(
You don't have to switch the master cylinder out but you do need the pro portioning valve
I wonder if that works for my c10 I’m sure it does
You did a great job 👏
Not many know, but the blazer in the later years came with rear disk. If you have a newer model like my 03, find a 2wd blazer and grab the parts. You can swap the whole diff in no time on these.
I broke two Moser axles on the dirt track and ended up put the stock ones back in and never had another problem....!
Little tip from an old guy...if your working on your knees throw a pad on the floor.
I would also done a little cleaning and painting on that housing. All those nice new components, make it look ugly.
Great vid You should do a follow up on this.
Hmmm, 🎶 "And there's oil everywhereeeee" 🎶
Nice!
My truck has SSBC rear kit for my 95 C1500. It uses 87 Turbo Coupe Thunderbird calipers! LOL!
Lol I have the same kit on my 91 from ssbc and I had no idea lol
I agree with the way you installed the rotors on back, but the front rotors are on the wrong side according to the drilled holes and slots..
Doh!
Love the Canadian Accent, " Ought"
Ao it won't work on my 98 k1500? I believe it has what u mean by staggered shocks. Got 1 pointing to the front and the other side is pointing to the back. If this doesn't fit my 98 then do they make a cheap kit that does fit the staggord shocks on the 98s
I need one of those for my 1991 Chevy
These calipers were used on Oldsmobile Toronado , Buick Riviera, and Cadillac Eldorados from 1979 to 1985.
The reason GM stopped using these brakes is the requirement for constant adjustment of the e-brake. If this is not done; which Cadilac owners never did, as they bought a caddy thinking it was maintenance free (Chevy Caprice owners, or the Caddy at one third the price, since it is the same B-body behind the grill without the added trim, owners realized that maintenance is required; such as changing engine oil and filters). If not adjusted to compensate for pad wear it results in complete loss of rear brake function and your pedal dropping constantly as you try and stop the car only using your front brakes.
Big Dave
Great info thanks
Id like a full float rear 6 lug 14 bolt AAM or Dana limited slip with large rear disk that will fit 17 inch wheels. I wonder if corvette have 6 piston front and rear...
nice video very informative, SpeedyCanuck did you ever find out what rotors those were?
Hey, is it possible to change drums to disc brakes of a pick up..single cabin for the rear axle since front brakes are discs
Okay guys this is absolutely the point which you replace with GM parts the bearings and seals no questions asked just do it if you do this set up where you get this deep into any kind of rear you will still regret it if you have a failure when you put it all back together at least the seals if that's got no miles on it
i have the same ebay kit i shoul to solder a litle plug that have just in the center of the piston caliper cause after some time start to leak brake fluid
A good time to replace wheel bearings and seals if its an old car. I would like to have seen more on how you dealt with the old hose connections.
@@tomikhaos7248 no problem, just wanted more details.
Cool, did you make a video on adjusting the E-Brake?
From which model are disk brakes? I see redrilling to new bolt patterm...
Nice got a question, got a 1970 camaro I want to upgrade to disk. Will I be able to still use my 15 inch rally sport RIMS? THANKS IN ADVANCE. 😊
Hi I need this to got a 1986 Nissan laurel c32 what to change rear drum into disc brakes
There was nothing said about the proportioning valve. Will the stock one work??
Unless you want cosmetic appearance I wouldnt waste good money on rear-disc conversion.
For one thing most of the braking power, like 80% of it comes from the front, so a nice quality, larger diameter, 6-piston up front will do most of the work, then to spend that same money and time for the rear which isnt used as much isnt a great idea.
Also you can run line-lock on old cars with front disc and rear drums for Easy burn outs.
Exactly! I did this to my 1997 gmc Sierra slt and I didn't notice a damn bit of difference! Save your money, unless like you said ,you want it to "look" better if your running open wheels.
Thank you
1978 trans am.has rear disc. Change portal.valve.keep it simple
I installed a similar kit on a 78 gbody malibu, there ok. I put about 300 miles & brake pads started squeaking & didn’t hold well against piston. Also noticed the rubbers seals where sliding pins go are wearing out. Not using that kit again. Cheapest way is 98-2000 Camaro or Blazer set up. Junk yards have them everywhere.
Did you have to switch master cylinders since I know disc front drums rear master cylinders are usually sectioned off or did it just work planning on doing this sometime in the near future
Cameron Vandygriff you can use stock master cylinder but I recommend upgrading to 86-88 SS with slight bigger bore. Also definitely need to change out to disc/disc proportioning valve.
@@jerryperez5486 ahhhh I forgot about the proportioning valve I've got a 93 S10 and I'm trying to get it lowered and get a little handling in it before I do my 350 swap this spring and figured while im taking the whole suspension apart might as well get some discs on it so I'll probably upgrade the master cylinder later to one with some brake performance but right now I just want brakes that work on all 4 corners the drums are pretty suck at their job XD
What I did for my third gen got from wrench apart not even spend 100 dollars on mine
@@bennietrevino9270 did you have to use a different master cylinder since they're set up for disc and drum or disc and disc
Nice
Good presentation.... But I would have passed on the nylon lock nuts in favor of metal ones; Unnecessary, but the brake assemblys get hot....
So how much wider is your axle overall from wheel mounting surfaces?
Nice video....what of the Prop valve and master cylinder ?
Will they fit on a Chevy caprice 80-90????
I have the same kit and i dont know why one e brake cable is longer than the other?
Nice kit But they make a 13 and a 1/2 inch Rotor with a 4 piston Caliper but u need 17 inch or bigger whell four $450
Thanks just bought the kit
I see these videos all over the place and I never see anyone change their distribution/proportioning valve. There are disc/drum and disc/disc ones.
Do c clip eliminators if ur worries about losing an axle
Good bro
I believe I seen AIRBAGS! 👍
I have a c10 71..its the seim ?
I was wondering what airbag system you have installed on the rear end and does it help with ride height and comfort?
John Jones I have Slam Specialties 7" bags attached to mounts I made myself. Rides great and I have about 11" of travel. I c-notched the frame and sectioned the floor to clear the driveshaft to make this thing sit as low as possible.
Will this fit 1985 c10 Chev PU truck
Where did you the rear brake caliper? Do you have a link?
Nice work
Donyou know if this will work on a 85 olds cutlass 442?
Hi !
I have a 1991 Ford f150 pick up truck that I want to do this conversion too. Question will be. Regarding the safety break line at the rear tire. Is the safety break line will be 1) useful to be reinstall to the new calipers or 2) it will be eliminated ?
This kit came with cables for the emergency brake. But the cables are for a late 60s, early 70s GM car. To make them work on other vehicles you may have to get creative or buy different length cables.
What did you do about a parking brake? I'm about to change out and I live on a hill?
Nevermind, watched to the end
Hi did you also change your rear differential with Posi and what gear spline did you go with. Are the originals axles spline 17? Thanks
Many years ago I had a Auburn posi unit installed. Still running the factory 373 gear set. These cars came with 28 spline axles from factory. I’m staying with 28 spline for now. Going to see how far I can push them. Lol.
Heeeit I wanna upgrade my rear brakes also... I have a 2011 Chevy colorado 2.9L with rear drums I want to make the conversion to disk brakes buy I have 6 lugs differential and all the systems I found are 5 lugs...
Any suggestions or brand !??
Get 5lug axels
I drive chevy cruze 2015 can't I upgrade disc brakes
How much of the braking is actually done by the rear axle? I heard it's not alot, that it's mostly the front brakes that stop the car by far. Even on a RWD
It depends on the car; weight, wheelbase, height, centre of gravity and weight transfer when braking all make huge differences. Rear or mid engined sports cars for example will have a about a 50/50 split front to rear for brake performance. An old big block Camaro or a standard FWD small car will have about a 90/10 split in an emergency stop however an old Cadillac Limousine will have about a 60/40 split because of the lack of weight transfer do to the extra length of the limousine. To give you an example of how extreme the weight transfer can be the 1970 V8 Holden Monaro 2 door (an Australian built RHD version of the Camaro with a different body) would lift it's rear wheels completely off the ground during emergency stops! a 100/0 split!
New axles warrant new wheel bearings and seals.
Would this fit on a 05 sunfire? And is there a link
Factory Corvette studs are longer and work as a stock replacement. Was your kit metric or standard? I'm not crazy about the china metric kits on eBay. Not the greatest material but ok for a flipper
Your Mom I bought ARP studs. I drilled them out one size larger, I believe I went with 7/16. They were actually too long though and I had to trim a little off because my chrome lug nuts are capped.
How much was the kit? And can I do this to a 96 Chevy caprice
Where is the kit from and how much did it run
hello I have an astro van 05 2 wd with hub 6 disk studs and I want to change them for some 5 of an astro 99 my question is it would work or do I have to thank your help thaks
just get spacers and torque them to specs
You remember the name of the seller or kit you bought? I want to do this with my c10. My drums are blown out and need a complete rebuild/replacement
The seller was Piratejack. Not sure if he’s still around. But this was a common kit sold by many.
Awesome
Great video! I am curious- did the wheel mounting surface move either inward or outward with this swap? Or is it in the same exact location?
Roger Jackson Almost exactly the same. Maybe an 1/8 of an inch outward. The thickness of the rotor on the hub face is slightly thicker than the drum.
@@averagedadsgarageCan this kit be installed if using 15 inch wheels?
Wondering if the caliper hits frame rail when the car's AirRide is aired out ?
Nope
I think the front rotors are swapped to the wrong sides. The grooves on the LF rotor are swirling the wrong way.
very possible,I think it only matters if you drive competively only normal street driving will not matter
hey does this kit work on a 86 z28?
Do you think this will work on a 2005 colorado ?
can I do this to my 1986 Iroc camaro?
Did u have to upgrade your brake booster or did you factory brake booster work??? Thanks just did this on my 73 Camaro have pressure issues or maybe a bad booster?
I did change my brake booster, but that had nothing to do with changing the rear brakes. You do need to change your master cylinder from a disc/drum, to a disc/disc. And your proportioning valve while your at it.
Want to install on my 71 Camaro like to know did it fit easily?what booster are you using?
what size stud did you have to use
Will this work for my 2003 chevy s10
would this fit a 1970 skylark?
What if I didn’t see your last video?
Drum brakes actually have more surface area than disc brakes.
It's why they still have drum brakes on semi trucks
you can still get real asbestos linings for semi trucks, that's why they still use drum brakes. if you could legally get real asbestos linings for passenger cars or light trucks there would be no need to convert to disk.
Ed Beck good point just heavy.
Ed Beck actually disc brakes are on semis today Wal Mart’s new trucks have them
Wow you giys that think rigs still use drum brakes really need to get up to speed. The disc brakes for rigs are 100% better than anything ever offered for trucks. How do I know this? Owner operator for 40 years. Also maintenance supervisor for an enviromental transportation company. Anybody that thinks drum brakes are better than disc brakes needs to get some education on the subject
Nice work. Curious, what make and model car your working on?
It’s a 1968 Pontiac LeMans.
Is it good for 71 Camaro 12 bolt?
Did you run into a problem with the master / proportion valve "Brake Light" stuck on (on the dash) due to the pressure change between the new disc verses old drums? And if so any simple fixes? Thanks
I switch my master cylinder out for one that is designed for a disc/disc setup. The brakes won’t work correctly if you leave in a master cylinder intended for a rear drum setup. I bought a wilwood with an adjustable proportioning valve, wasn’t that expensive.
@@averagedadsgarage Ok thanks.
Do you have part number for the kit
Yeah but you didn't show how you got those c clips in.
Does this work for truck 10 bolts?
Is there enough free space between most farthest point parknig brake mechanism and frame?
Yes.
Wat year did u buy I didn’t see it
You have a link to kit or name of guy who sales it??
The sellers name on eBay was Pirate jack. Type in pirate-jack-asheville-nc. He seems to have brake parts for everything.
please tell me you changed those axel seals after having that rearend apart
Yes sir.
What about changing axle bearings & seals while having axles out????????? Wouldn’t surprise me if new axles tear up the old bearings, way to go!!!!
jim wilson I already put new bearings and seals in the axle. But thanks for the concern.
What’s the year and model of car? Wondering if the kit is compatible for a 73 Caprice classic?
The rear end in this car is out of a 71 Chevelle.
Where do you find the kits at
So this will not work with a rear wheel Chevy c-10. They have staggered shocks ?
I would check with Pirate Jacks. The kit in the video was for A body GM and would not work with the c-10.
