- This stressed lathered up "Big Lick" Tennessee Walking Horse is in the Line Up at the Asheville (NC) Horse Show held at the Western North Carolina AG Center in on October 4, 2019. .
The "Lineup" is when the horses which have competed form a line and the riders await the Judges decision as to where in the class they placed.
The "Bit" looks like a medieval torture device. The horse has labored breathing, and is foaming at the mouth, while the rider appears nonchalant.
This is the "Big Lick" which MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) Horse Science Professor Dr. John Haffner says is "Animal Cruelty" - "It is a pain induced gait - a business built on the suffering and pain of horses."
The "WE, The People" - CCABLAC - Citizens Campaign Against Animal Cruelty to Tennessee Walking Horses ("Big Lick") exercised their First Amendment rights and protested the "Big Lick" Animal Cruelty at the Asheville, NC Horse Show for the fourth consecutive year.

Everyone watching this video needs to pause the video at :41 seconds. Look at this horses' hooves. Do you see the long vertical cracks on the front of the hooves? There is a crack on each hoof that pretty much goes all the way up to the coronary band. These cracks are very concerning as these cracks are a direct result of injury to the hoof and hoof wall. It's possible that this horse has a lot of heel pain as the horse is putting more pressure on the front of the hoof to alleviate pain in the heel. Or, the cracks that are there are simply from being in blocks (which is probably the case). Either way, this horse should not be ridden in this condition. This horse is injured and needs medical attention. IMHO, putting horses in blocks, chains, causes traumatic injury to the horse's legs, hooves, and even body (back legs, spine, etc...)
ALso, pause the video at :21. Notice the bit in the horse's mouth. The shank portion is the length of the bit going downward from the mouth. The longer this portion is, the harsher the bit is. The shank on this bit looks like it is about 7 inches long. In all my years of riding, I have never seen a bit with this length measurement.
I assure you; these horses are 100% being abused. These shows need to be boycotted and these riders/owners/trainers need to be banned from owning horses.
You can clearly see the horse is so scared because of how heavy he is breathing. The chains on the hooves are just disgusting 🤮 When I look into the eyes it makes me just so heartbroken 💔 He knows what’s going on and he is so terrified. Poor baby 🥺😭

😪😡😡but , I don’t understand the law and rules over there ? Here in Sweden if for example the judge at a competition ( jumping, dressage or any type of horse show ) or just any sane person would see horses stressed and in obvious pain the rider would be reported , suspended ,and given a fine . I don’t get it?!?
The judges are complicit in the business of making the horses walk in such an unnatural way. They're greedy cowards who shouldn't be accepted by any Breed Society. They should be forced to stop the shows, the breeding and the "training"(brutalisation) of these horses and everyone involved should be blacklisted by every body that is responsible for horses. I know it's hard to understand for sane people but it happens all the time. Look up Big Lick and TWH and look at what they have on their feet. The judges can see too so it's obvious they're being paid to keep quiet. The inspectors are the same and owners/breeders make their horses fearful of showing pain as they get beaten if they flinch!
40 or more years ago these people refused to follow the rules of the American Horse Show Association (now the United States Equestrian Federation) and started their own show association, with their own rules. The US House of Representatives passed a law to ban the practice, but the Senate won’t vote on it as long as the Big Lick has friends in the Senate.

I saw a judge observe a horse bleeding profusely from both nostrils and just walk on by, completely ignoring it. Big Lick shows are disgusting.
The pieces of shit who participate in this cruel excuse for a showcase are nasty and miserable people who threaten and intimidate anyone that disagrees with them. Unfortunately, these people use that tactic to force their "values" on anyone who tried to stop them. There are videos all over RUclips of protestors being attacked for trying to draw attention to the problem. It's not big oil, and it's not big commerce, so politicians don't care.

BTW I wrote a 5 paragraph essay on why Big Lick is the most abusive thing in the equestrian community and most of my classmates/friends agreed with me even though they knew nothing about horses!

This is absolutely disgusting, disturbing, abusive, and torture of horses. All for that Almighty Dollar. These people should rot in jail at minimum for this abuse, and they should have their feet chained the same way and be forced to walk while we laugh, and cheer, and bet money on which one is gonna fall down from pain and exhaustion first.

It's like these people are competing in a show of "how much can you torture and abuse your horse"...and they're proud of it too. I know nature can be a cruel mistress, but only humans have the capacity to literally degrade another living creature for YEARS on end to the point it is a writhing, deformed mess of agony and despair. And they do so without remorse. Only to slaughter the horse for meat when it has become so lame it can't function. No gratitude given for the animal and its servitude. They take until nothing is left.
This horse is literally hyperventilating, in pain and sweating through its own coat. I know nothing about horses, but I recognize the hurt.

Also see the grey on the horses right, hes been rolked. Extreme suffering caused by over flexion of the neck. It cuts off their breathing and they are forced to stay in this position overnight sometimes, to fatigue the neck. On top of being sored! These people are void of a conscience. Bring them to justice.

Good eye. The way he tucks his chin in and struggles from side to side, this horse is not okay. Horses don't normally do that at all. None of these animals look confortable and frankly that should count against their score.

I watched some of an AQHA congress last week. I don't agree with everything they do, but I did see a lot of calm comfortable horses with relaxed necks and long loose reins, ridden by competent riders, such a contrast to this travesty

Oginskis this doesn’t happen at the AQHA Congress. In this video are Tennessee walking horses, being abused to perform in the Big Lick classes. AQHA Congress is the biggest horse show of the year for the American Quarter Horse. Completely different

This horse is terrified and in pain. Doesn’t take an expert to see the expression of fear in the eyes and nostrils large due to hyperventilating. This is animal torture. The rider has huge nasty spurs on and about a harsh a bit as they make because without it she could not control the horse. Without The pain of the spurs you could not force the horse to do what you want because each step is excruciating. This is not riding. It’s torture. Anyone who does this does not love horses. It’s about them and a stupid ribbon or trophy. Grow up!
Your rights don’t include being able to torture horses. All those involved should be banned from riding and owning horses EVER again. This is wrong this just breaks my heart. And some people actually think biglick and saddle seat is the same but it isn’t. Coming from a saddle seat rider we use saddlebreds who naturally lift their legs higher than other breeds. In biglick as many people know it is abusive; the main difference that I see is that in biglick they will use any kind of horse breed.

I have been following you for awhile and this may be the worst video yet. This makes me sick. I'm surprised that horse did not collapse! He his breathing so hard. The gray next to him can't stand still. And the chestnut with the blaze on the other side is breathing just as hard. I am truly disgusted.

I watched a video yesterday that had a big lick horse bleeding from his nostrils……the judge saw it and walked away! And the rider just sat there, didn’t get off his horse, didn’t try and aid him in any way……this woman at least looks a bit worried, she should! This has got to be stopped! 😢

your heart rate increases when you’re in pain, it’s not different for a horse.
Also as you can see in the video the horse is nostrils are moving in and out really fast that's a sign of stress horses under a lot of stress standing on their feet like that after the stacks are on and the chains are very painful to the horse
Horses do not deserve to go through this much pain…. Every time I think of the big lick I can feel my ankles burn… I hope these “ riders” live with tremendous guilt knowing the out an innocent helpless animal through absolute hell 😞
