I had a donkey that I had to euthanize december 2019 because he was out of strenght and old. He laid down and couldn't get back up, we tried during almost 72 hours but he couldn't stand anymore. He loved to have his ears rubbed and seeing you doing it to those donkeys brought tears to my eyes with the memory of him...
I loved him so much and miss him so much still.
He was just a giant ball of tenderness!

We lost my daughter's beloved Shetland, Sun's Stoney Mac, to choke in the night years ago. Carolina is 26 now and still keeps Stoney's ashes and portrait on her entertainment center.
So glad Galahad was discovered in time to save him 🙏
Much appreciation for all you do!

@@Terry-lh8cn Unfortunately it was for our little grey man. After tending my daughter who found him in the run of his stall, i looked him over and found leaves of the alfalfa hay he had for dinner the night before mixed with snot coming from his nostrils and dried on his forelegs where he had rubbed it. Stoney was a very healthy 19 years old. i had taken him from a neglectful situation at 5 months so i knew his history and he had never had an issue with choke before. It was just really sad. Everyone loved Stoney the Pony.

I don't think that's standard. Little different, but it was that time for my elderly cat, but the animal shelter refused to help me put her out of pain. I ultimately had it done with our vet, but I was afraid they would pressure me to keep her alive so I didn't go there first (I'm adamantly against doing that under certain circumstances and not because of money). I was willing to pay, but the kill shelter was who actually made it traumatic for me. The vet 100% supported the decision. I don't know if this is a horse specific comment, though. You'd think it would be easier with a small animal.

thats why people dont do the right thing.. cost, or getting their horse transported to vet or vet to come out, then, what to do with their animal as far as a final resting place. people " condem" or say abuse for a working owner, but yet an organization or ? that gets DONATIONS has the financial means to give care.. to a horse " rescues" it. i think alot of owners want to do the " right " thing..but have no financial backing..its like my dog,s mine needs neutered, but , cant get a ride , i can afford it, and my old one , when its her time to go, get her to the vet, or have vet come, and what to do with her to find a resting place..? some one will " rescue" her with resources, and have me flagged as an animal abuser..so people are also afraid to do the right thing.. ( no i have planned ahed ) i think rescues should resucue the owner too, without fear of being fined or put in jail .no judgement, i think more people would do the right thing.

I live in upstate SC and it came time to sadly say goodbye to our 14yo dog Levi aka: BooBoo. He couldn’t breathe when laying down due to collapsing throat he had for years. We called a nearby vet that came to our house to administer the shot and also has services to cremate them too. In such an emotional time it was nice to have that choice. (Although I just couldn’t stay - I left the house and let my husband stay with him.)

As a Friesian owner, I am aware that a lot of them suffer from megaesophagus, (among a phletora of other genetic diseases) which can cause choke. It looks like this beautiful black horse has a large dose of Friesian in him. I would take note of that and ask a qualified vet, or contact FHANA on how to feed him properly to circumvent choke. My guess is that whoever took this horse to slaughter knew about this situation and dumped the poor horse because of it. Willing to bet that was not his first choke. Friesians take the cake on Megaesophagus, uper aeortic rupture and colic, among other illnesses.

Tawnee, I understand being a rescuer on vacation, you can't exactly stop rescuing if another rescue, or animal, needs help. I had no idea that you had grants that were global though, honestly you are an angel. If only exotics could have some grants like that, it would be so much better, than so many parrots wouldn't be turned away.

I’ve been to Bonaire and they also have donkeys on the island. They were brought there to help in the salt mining. They roam free on the island and everyone has a feeding station for them to put their vegetable clippings in for the donkeys. They also have donkey ambulances all over the island just in case there is a sick or injured donkey. It was great to see how well everyone took care of them.

I'm also happy Tawnee, that you and Jason, Angela and Keith went on a little vacation, and I bet it was fun going together. It looked beautiful, thank you for sharing, and of course my favorite part was the donkey sanctuary, that was awesome, and their hooves really do look to be in great shape especially for not having regular farrier care. I've never in my 65 plus years ever seen an equine with only 3 legs 😳. That was truly amazing!! Glad ya'll had a good time, I think it really came at a good time as well, ya'll work so hard for a cause that is never ending, and can easily take it's tole on you quickly.....Your so right Jason, everyone needs a break from rescue, it can be very taxing, emotionally draining, and just plain difficult for long periods of time. But God Bless ya'll for doing it, and doing it so well! Ya'll have changed (for the good) sooo many horses lives. It's truly incredible. Love and Blessings to everyone at HPHS ❤ 🙌 Jennifer

I really liked the hard and clean ground they were kept on, and for them to naturally grind down their hooves completely without any help is ideal. I was impressed by their gates and fence that said Donkey Sanctuary and had donkey ears peaking over the edge! 😘 That was a nice touch.
I also liked to way they had their water, in a tiled pool with a sunroof that provides shade from the harsh sunlight, the only one thing missing was a statue of a Prince standing there taking a pee into the pond, just for a royal touch and to hear the water fountain pouring is said to be very calming.
However, were the donkeys provided with any areas with soft bedding? I didn’t see any stalls that would provide a safe area with controlled climate, any roofs to give shade or any windbreakers to protect them from strong winds but they must have had those, just that you didn’t give us the full tour! 👍🏻

I have so so so many positive comments to make for this episode - you guys are ALL wonderful - and i agree with Dawn - VACATION TIME!!!!! But seriously - DONKEYS!!!!!!!! Oh My! And better still DONKEY SANCTUARY!!!!!! Be still my beating heart. I could have just taken my beast of a wheelchair in and sat there and let them mob me. If I died, I'd still be happy. LOL, and back home here, I think there'd be a couple of mates arguing about who gets my horse.
SO glad you could help ADS with a grant for a LAOK. Thats beautiful.
That in/out of internet - had MY Anxiety going - goodness knows what it did to you guys in the office? I'd have needed the big chicken to hug, or to sit in a stall with all the puppies and my inhalers, and kittens. Multi level meltdown. lol It's ok John, I would NOT have taken the big chicken in with puppies and kittens - that would not have ended prettily - I can see chicken stuffing everywhere and one John carted off in an ambulance.
Kory - it is so frustrating isnt it when you cant find the right nuts for wheel hubs - I had that with my old float at one stage and had the old hubs just removed and replaced with current standard ones then obviously had a new set of the locktite nuts all round and got a new set of nuts to fit one entire wheel 'just in case' - bit like having spare fuses for everything (and I have no clue how many times I see folk just go around the wheel tightening, not going opposite sides and then 90* then a bit of a tighten again and final when its on the ground. But then they stand on the bloomin breaker bar like their lives depend on it and THATS how they strip the nuts and make them impossible to undo when they need to. YES tighten but dont over tighten. - towing - be it a caravan, box trailer or stock trailer/horse float SHOULD be a section on drivers license applications that if you do not pass that - or sit that test - you do not get ticked off - same goes with 4wd/Off-roading - why? people are idiots at times. Truck drivers have to have a whole different class of license - yet we let someone have a car license and off they zoom with a deadly lump of metal as it is, and then stick big metal things behind it with live cargo in it.

Humane euthanasia grants that people can apply to from all over the world - such an important initiative. I see people react when you have to let some of the horses you save at auction go. I think it is admirable that you take on this very necessary job I know you find very hard. And I appreciate even more the times you have bought animals just to save them from further suffering. Thank you for all your great work, both the "easy-to-sell" on RUclips stuff, and the difficult things many get fired up about.

I know you all are having problems since the live options have stopped I just have a suggestions maybe we can take some of the horses that you have brought in and do updates on them how they're doing what their care entailed of and what other help they need so you can request more donations for that horse just a thought

How do you soak feed? Recently my 27 yr old TW choked on his feed. Thankfully it passed within the hour but scared us terribly. I was on the phone with the emergency after hour call as it cleared. Scared us and him both. Last year we had been giving him beet pulp with water to help add to his weight. Would I just add water to his senior feed and let it soak just the same? Thank you.

Yes. My 36 year old ate soaked feed for many years and did fine.

Beet pulp swells 3 times it's original weight so make sure you give it plenty of time to absorb the liquids. Some horses choke because they are bolting their food and when they start losing teeth it is harder for them to chew their food.I went through this with a mare and had to make sure it was well soaked and find ways to slow her down when she was eating. She was the lowest on the pecking order so I believe she did this in order to get her feed before the others so I started separating her from the others to enable her to relax.I inherited her from the owner of the land and didn't know her well. They found out they were allergic to horse hair and just let them graze but didn't interact much with them. She was 27 then and underweight. When I started boarding there I took over they just thought she was old and didn't realize how much they could do for her.I had never used beet pulp and inadvertently caused her to choke not knowing about wetting it down. Fortunately she recovered and lived another 5 years with all but one of her grinding teeth gone. She was such a gentle soul and when she passed I heard her whinny on the wind the next day.It was so different that I knew it was her saying goodbye.

    |Regarding choke. What a lot of people DON'T realise is that a horse/equine cannot breath IN through its' mouth. (that's why race horses have such huge nostrils!) They breath in through the nose and can cough. If there is a blockage it is difficult to breath in at all and therefore they CHOKE. Most times the tubing does clear the obstruction(s). That is why we ALWAYS cut apples and carrots etc. into chewable pieces.

    • @Terry-lh8cn
      @Terry-lh8cn 9 месяцев назад

Horses don't breathe and eat through the same passageways. Choke is gross and disturbing but is not a breathing emergency like it is for us.
