    Pancho is smart. He's not sure what's up with the camera and he doesn't trust new things much. He didn't enter his stall until he saw that the cat was calm.

      As far as I know that's quite a common way for donkeys to act with new things, isn't it? They like to "think about it" which is often misconstrued as stubbornness.

    When I was a kid(I’m 60 now) we had a 50 cow Holstein dairy. Every afternoon we would let the cows out, clean and put fresh bedding in their stalls, and clean and put fresh food in their mangers. Each cow had a name and a specific stall. When we let them back in, they would each go to their own stall. Very cozy on a cold winter night!
    In the warm months the cows were only brought inside morning and evening for milking. They mostly lived in the pasture.

    We had a horse that was sold, that had been born on the property and spent his first six years with us. He was then sold to a 'show home' as a Dressage horse. 7 years later, when Baltazar had to retire due to an injury, the woman who bought him asked us if we wanted him back, for free. We agreed of course. He came home in the trailer. The girl opened the back door, grabbed his lead rope and back him out. All this time the other horses, including his mother...were calling to him. The poor girl didn't have a chance, Balty DRAGGED her from the trailer, into the barn and right back to his old stall. This horse was gone for 7 years, yet he knew exactly what stall was his. It's not unusual for horses to know their own stalls or pens, most of ours put themselves in for dinner, then to bed.

    My cousin has boarded and trained horses for decades, and one night while I was visiting, her prize horse was out in a corral socializing with some of the other equines as is their wont. The boarding horse stayed outside, but prize horse overnighted in the barn much like the lot in this video. Cousin came out and casually called "Atrayu, it's time to come in," and like an obedient dog, the horse turned away from his pals and plodded over to his stall. I hadn't expected a horse to do that.

    I remember this old riding stable I used to go to. She had about twenty horses or so and every dinner time she call them from the field and we all stand back as the horses came running and each went to their respective stalls. It was my favorite thing to watch when I went there. All the horses would be running except the very last horse, who was named moose (because of his size) would slowly come potting up from the rear.

Finally, Poncho(2:25) had to wait for the cat walking down the steps, to do it's head count & make sure it made it to the floor safely, lol. This is not the first time I have seen horses do something like this. My grandfather had horses in New England when I was a kid. At one time he had seven horses. He kept them in a four acre paddock and attached to that were stables. On the other side of the stables was a quarter acre paddock he used when he needed to isolate a horse. His horses did the exact same thing. What got them to the door was when the sun set or if it was raining. If it was raining they'd be at the gate waiting to be let in though usually in the daytime he'd leave the gate open so the horses could come and go as they wanted. Some would go run out in the rain for a while then come right back to the stables. When it was really cold they didn't want to go out at all. But when the weather was nice they'd want to go out into the paddock. But at sun down they would line up at the gate waiting to be let in. My grandfather would open the gate and they would march single file to their respective stalls exactly like this video shows. Then my grandfather would shut the stall gates but he didn't have to close Mitzy's gate. Somehow she figured out how to shut it herself. She also figured out how to open it herself. She was the only one. Sometimes she opened her gate in the morning and was waiting at the paddock gate to be let out. sometimes she had her stall gate open but was just standing in her stall waiting for my grandfather. She never taught the other horses how.

      Jane Doe...I agree with your comment. This does seem like an exceptional stable, in terms of care of all of the animals. I also agree with your comment concerning the height of the stall door. Ponies (and by extension, small donkeys) want to be prepared to look out over the door, just to know everything about all that happens in the barn. Seems like a minor detail, if you are not a small pony or miniature donkey. These owners seem to have sincere concern for their animals. Maybe they will see your comment and then cut the door down.

    They are so precious to watch how well behaved they are. So many people disappoint me due to lack of concern for their animals in the wintertime. I put a pot of tea water on to steam my house to help the 3 kitties in my house breathe in the winter. It helps them relax and to sleep better since they stay inside.

      sportster1988 She probably means a barn worker.... A barn worker works in a barn, a stable worker works in a stable, a ranch hand works on a ranch, and a farm hand works on a farm.. To be a farm you have to have product going out for income, like milk, produce, or grains. Somebody can work in a barn full of animals and not be a farm hand and also a property can have a barn full of animals and not even be a farm.

    I wonder if the donkey is somewhat reluctant to come in because he can't see the others over the walls and door. My donkeys are like that and they have the company of one another. They prefer an escape route and like to see any possible threats approaching. I always thought it how Mother Nature built them to survive.

    • @REBECKAJO50
      @REBECKAJO50 6 лет назад +20

      horses don't need a heated barn it is the humans that need the heat. a heated barn can even be very bad for horses if it is heated above 40 degrees. horses should be kept as close to how they would live in the wild if you want to have both healthy and happy horses. The barn isn't even needed. A large well maintained pasture with a large three sided shelter is what they need to be happy and healthy. We humans tend to do what makes us happy such as building stalls for the horses so it is easier for us to feed and care for the horses when the horse really doesn't want to be in a small box . Horses are herd animals and they both want and need their herd to be safe, happy and healthy. so if you can give them a well maintained pasture with a three sided shelter and a few more horses to be with and their food and water and your horse will feel safe and will be happy and healthy.

      REBECCA, they have 4 - 3 sided metal sheds in the open pasture and 1,000 acres to roam. Fresh water, lakes, creeks... the barn is for sub freezing temperatures.

    • @REBECKAJO50
      @REBECKAJO50 6 лет назад +19

      Wow, sounds like this herd is living the life. Congrats on being such a smart owner. I hate it when horses are kept is small box stalls and only taken out to be ridden. When I was 19 I had met an instructor who had me come to her barn and ride her horses for my lessons. I was shocked to find all her horses kept in these box stalls and none were kept in the pasture. She said this way they couldn't get hurt and they stayed much cleaner than if they were in a pasture all the time.. But when I walked the isles of this barn I saw horses chewing on the wood planks used to build the stall. I saw other horse who would stand looking out of their stall and constantly swaying back and forth. When I asked this instructor why this horse was swaying back and forth she said she wasn't sure but the horse did have a stomach ulcer and so it may have something to do with having an ulcer. Well I couldn't stand seeing what she was doing to these poor animals. I tried to explain to her that I thought her horses were showing signs of extreme stress and borderline psychotic behavior. She told me I was way to young and inexperienced to have such an awful opinion. So I did not take a lesson for I did not want to ride any of her poorly kept horses and I left never to see her again. I came to realize that horse people are sure they know everything and they are sure their way is the only way. I decided then I would keep and open mind about everything. I love horses so much that I want them to be safe, happy and healthy first then I can work on having a relationship with them that may or may not lead to a nice trail ride some day. It is so wonderful to know there are great owners like you out there. MAY GOD BLESS YOU!!

    Poncho senses there’s something different this time and is being a Donkey. What’s surprising is that you keep saying he’s being stubborn, no donkeys have a higher survival instinct and sense when something is out of whack. Today he knew he was being observed and wasn’t coming in until he knew it was safe to do so.

      Dobie girl; EXACTLY MY THOUGHTS TOO.
      The adorable donkey was actually being 'smart'
      & deciding if the filming was anything to be concerned about? An intelligent little creature.
      The man in the video is very respectful & kind, I simply encourage to realize that the donkey's thinking process takes time & it wasn't stubbornness, my German Sheppard was the same way. She would lift up her ears at my commands, sit upon his haunches for a minute or two and then leap into obedience of the command once 'she decided' that the order made 'sense' in her world. A one in a million dog. This donkey is very alert & intelligent regarding his little animal kingdom!
